As the summer holidays approach, many parents start thinking about how they will keep their children busy, productive and entertained.
Some may also be concerned about the ‘summer slide’ – the progress lost during the summer holidays, which teachers report can be around a month, particularly if children are not regularly keeping up skills such as reading. For this reason, reading should be an essential part of any summer activity plan.
Here are some simple and effective ways to encourage reading over the summer.
In the first few days of the holiday, visit your local library and (re)introduce your child to the children’s section. Try to make this a weekly habit so it becomes a familiar and enjoyable routine. While you’re there, check to see whether the library is running any summer activities for children such as the annual Summer Reading Challenge (www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk), as these can be motivating and make reading feel more social and engaging. Developing this habit early also helps children feel confident using libraries later in life, whether in school, university or the wider community.
Another tip is setting a reading target with rewards, which can be especially helpful for reluctant readers. Even a small incentive can be a useful starting point. Make sure the target is realistic so your child can achieve it and feel a sense of pride. This could be as simple as reading one chapter book in August or reading for twenty minutes each day.
Encouraging your child to read a book series is another easy win. Once they are hooked on a set of books, there’s no need to keep searching for what to read next. For younger readers, popular series such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Worst Witch or Horrid Henry can be great starting points, while older children might enjoy Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games trilogy or Harry Potter.
You could also refresh or redecorate your child’s bookshelf by donating old books and picking up new ones from charity shops. This can become a fun, creative project, perhaps involving painting or reorganising the space, which helps make reading feel more exciting. It also keeps your child’s reading material fresh and engaging without being expensive.
Finally, try to maintain or re-establish bedtime reading routines. Lighter evenings can make bedtime more challenging, so keeping reading as part of the routine is even more important.

Long summer car journeys provide a great opportunity to engage with books in a different way. While travelling, try listening to audiobooks as a family. Sharing the experience and discussing the story together can have a strong impact on your child’s interest in reading. Starting a free trial with a service like Audible over the summer can be an easy way to begin.
As a teacher, I am often met with scepticism from parents when I suggest audiobooks. While they may not support decoding skills as directly as reading print, they are highly valuable for developing a love of stories, which is especially important for reluctant readers.
Listening to stories also helps build vocabulary and background knowledge and studies have shown that strong background knowledge can compensate for weaker reading ability. It’s not just about sounding out words but about understanding and making meaning from what is read. Finally, listening itself is an important skill that is often overlooked, so audiobooks can play a valuable role in your child’s overall literacy development.

The way we talk about potty training really does matter. Soft, encouraging language can turn it into something positive rather than something that feels pressured or rushed. Simple phrases like: ‘Shall we sit on the potty before bed?’ or ‘Let’s give it a try together’ feel very different from instructions or demands. They help keep the experience calm, gentle and supportive, which makes it easier for your child to relax and engage.
Consistency also plays an important role. Regular routines such as sitting on the potty after meals or before leaving the house help your child know what to expect. Having a rhythm can make the whole process feel like just another part of the day.
Some families also find simple distraction ideas helpful, such as bubbles or a toy, which can encourage children to sit for a little longer without pressure, making the moment feel more natural and unforced.
Alongside consistency comes encouragement. Celebrating wins no matter how small can make a big difference to how your child feels. Whether they sit on the potty, tell you they need to go or simply try, those moments are worth recognising. A warm: ‘Well done for trying!’ or ‘I’m really proud of you’ helps build their confidence and keeps the experience positive. It’s not about big rewards or pressure but about gently noticing effort and progress as they happen. Little prizes also can encourage the process.
Of course, accidents will happen. They are a completely normal part of learning and not something to worry about. Staying calm in those moments helps your child feel safe and supported rather than embarrassed or upset. A simple, reassuring response like: ‘That’s okay, we’ll try again next time’ can make all the difference. When children feel understood rather than corrected, they’re much more likely to keep trying without fear or resistance.
Routine can be helpful, especially around key times like waking up, before going out or after meals. But flexibility is just as important. Some days will feel easier than others and that’s perfectly normal.
Potty training is rarely a straight path and giving space for those ups and downs helps reduce stress for both you and your child. Keeping things relaxed also reminds your child that learning doesn’t have to be perfect to be progress.
It’s also worth remembering that big changes in a child’s life can affect how ready they feel. Things like starting childcare, moving house or welcoming a new sibling can all make them need a little more time and reassurance. During these moments, slowing down isn’t a setback; it’s simply responding with care to what they need.
You will often discover what works best for your little one through gentle trial and time. Every child is different and there is no single right way or fixed timeline. What matters most is that they feel safe, supported and understood throughout the process.
Potty training is not just about learning a new skill but about building confidence, independence and trust. When children feel that you are on their side, patient, encouraging and calm, they are far more likely to feel happy in trying.
And when the consistency and patience is there, progress tends to come naturally in its own time.
Gentle signs that your child may be ready
There’s no perfect age to begin potty training; it’s more about child readiness. Your child might be staying dry for longer
periods, telling you their nappy needs changing or showing interest in the toilet. Some children begin to pause or hide when they need to go. These small cues are helpful signs that it’s time to gently introduce the idea. Educate them for a week or so with a book, so they visually see what they have to do.
Encouragement, praise and small rewards
Positive reinforcement can really support your child’s confidence during potty training. Praising effort even if they don’t quite succeed helps them feel proud and motivated to keep trying. Simple words like: ‘You did so well sitting on the potty’ can go a long way. Some families also find small rewards helpful, like stickers or a reward jar after a successful try. The key is to keep it light and encouraging, focusing on effort rather than perfection.

As sunshine and warmer weather arrive, it’s the perfect time to head to the coast. Beach adventures embrace a philosophy of play and exploration which encourages children to learn to take risks. Best still, they are a cheap, enriching way to enjoy quality family time together.
A scavenger hunt or beachcombing session is for everyone, regardless of age. It is pure and simple fun. All you truly need is a bucket and a good dose of curiosity. Both soft sand or rugged pebbles offer similar opportunities for awe and wonder. Head straight for the strandline, the distinct trail of debris left by the high tide, to discover nature’s hidden treasures tucked away!
As you explore, you might find scuttling crabs, beautiful shells and seaweed of all different shapes, sizes and colours. However, the golden rule is to leave the beach as you found it; avoid taking anything home so the ecosystem stays protected. To turn the adventure into a learning experience, take an identification guide or use a phone to search for what you have found. By identifying your discoveries, you will transform curious explorers into coastline experts in no time.
Journey sticks are a fantastic way to capture the essence of your beach walk, turning a simple stroll into a visual story. This creative activity is a secret weapon for parents; it helps distract children and motivates little legs when they start to tire, transforming the walk into an engaging mission.
All you need is a piece of driftwood and some natural twine tied securely to one end. As you wander along the shore, encourage your young explorers to pick up items of interest: perhaps a spiralled shell, a weathered bit of sea glass or a unique strand of dried sugar kelp. Simply tie each treasure to the stick using the twine to wrap around it, continuing to add new finds as you go.
Once you return to your base, the story telling begins. With a snack and a drink in hand, use the stick as a visual map to retell your journey along the shore. Each attached item serves as a memory marker, helping children retell their adventure and celebrate their coastal discoveries.
Traditional games offer a timeless way to connect with the coast, requiring absolutely no resources beyond what you find scattered along the shore. By using driftwood, seaweed, shells and pebbles, you can transform the strandline’s treasures into a natural playground.
Make the most of the shore’s driftwood to make the grid or draw the grid into flat sand. Either create the X and O using seaweed or use shells versus stones as your playing pieces.
Kim’s Game tests observation and memory skills. Gather a collection of beach treasures, give players a moment to memorise the items, then cover the collection and see what they can recall. This easily adapts to suit any age; for younger children, start with three or four distinct objects. To challenge older explorers, try using six different types of seaweed or six different spiral shells to make the distinctions more subtle and remove one item - can they remember which item is missing?

Science experiments entertain children brilliantly during the school holidays. They spark curiosity, encourage problemsolving and offer a great mix of fun and learning.
But let’s be honest: they can also be messy, time-consuming and often require equipment you don’t have (or will only use once). And then there’s the clean-up… The good news is it doesn’t have to be that way. These four simple experiments using everyday items are guaranteed to keep your curious scientists busy this summer.
You’ll need:
Paper, scissors, pens, string, a warm drink
What to do:
Cut a circle out of the paper.
Draw a spiral starting from the centre of the paper and decorate it with a face in the middle.
Cut along the spiral, make a small hole in the centre, thread the string through it and secure with a knot.
Hold the snake over your drink and it will start to spin.
Why it works:
Warm air rises. The heat creates a current that spins the spiral.
You’ll need:
Paper, scissors, pens, bowl of water
What to do:
Draw, colour in and cut out some simple flowers. Fold the petals in half towards the middle of the flower without overlapping.
Place them carefully on the surface of the water. They slowly open like they are blooming.
Why it works:
The paper absorbs the water which makes its fibres swell up and push the petals open.
You’ll need:
Two identical glasses, water, food colouring, salt, a piece of thick card
What to do:
Fill both glasses with water. Add a few drops of food colouring to one glass and two tablespoons of salt to the other, stirring until dissolved. Top up glasses so they are completely full.
Place the card over the coloured water and carefully flip it upside down, holding the card in place.
Sit this glass on top of the salty one so the rims line up. Gently slide out the card.
The water stays separate - like it’s floating! If you turn the glasses over, they mix together.
Why it works:
Water is less dense than salty water so it will float on top. When you flip them over, the salty water sinks.
Top tip: This also works with warm water in the top glass and cold water in the bottom one.
You’ll need:
A glass, jug, water, spoon, sugar, two food colourings, vegetable oil, vitamin C tablet
What to do:
Fill the glass about a quarter full of water and add a food colouring with two tablespoons of sugar.
In the jug, mix a similar amount of water with a different colour.
Using the back of a spoon, pour this liquid as a layer on top of the sugar water.
Fill the rest of the glass with oil to create three layers.
Break up the tablet, drop it into the glass and watch the bubbles rise and fall.
Why it works:
The liquids sit on top of each other because they are different densities. When the tablet dissolves through the oil it releases carbon dioxide bubbles.
Top tip: Try different types of effervescent tablets to get different size bubbles.

We all want our children to feel good about who they are but for autistic children, that confidence doesn’t always come easily. One way we can support that is by understanding autism and the many amazing strengths it brings.
As the parent of a neurodivergent child myself, I’ve seen just how powerful it can be when we begin to understand and celebrate how their brains work. Those moments where something small can feel overwhelming but also the incredible focus, honesty and creativity that come with it. By noticing both sides, we can help our children do the same.
Your child might notice tiny details that others miss. They might have a brilliant memory, a deep passion for the things they love or a wonderfully creative way of thinking. They might be full of energy, honesty, curiosity or kindness. These are not small things - they are real strengths. But children don’t always see this in themselves, especially if they’re often hearing about what they find tricky. That’s where you can really help.
Try to spot and gently name your child’s strengths in everyday moments. You might say: ‘I love how you noticed that’ or ‘You worked so hard on that, your brain is amazing.’ Such repeated small comments help your child begin to recognise their own abilities.
It can also help to reframe challenges. A child who feels overwhelmed by noise might also have a very sensitive and aware brain. A child who talks a lot about their favourite topic might have a fantastic ability to learn and share information. By shifting the way we talk about these moments, we help our children see the full picture.
Encourage your child to follow what they love. Their interests are where confidence grows and where they feel most themselves. Invite them to reflect on what they enjoy and what they’re good at. Simple questions like: ‘What made you feel proud today?’ can build self-awareness over time.
You can also model self-acceptance by celebrating differences in everyday life. Read books together that show diverse minds, talk openly about feelings and highlight role models who think in unique ways. Invite your child to teach you about their interests so you share a connection. Most importantly, remind your child often: there is no one else in the world quite like them. When they begin to see that for themselves, it can change everything.
