Roald Dahl Museum Review

When I walked in, I was not very warmly welcomed by an actor dressed as Miss Trunchbull, so I asked her, “How did you become so unkind and nasty?” She replied, “I was fine until someone introduced me to children!” Then she stormed off, leaving me to look round the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden.
The first room I looked in was 'Boy.' This room was about Roald Dahl when he was a child. I learnt that he hated school and pulled silly tricks.
One of these tricks was that one day he and his friends wanted to get revenge on the owner of their sweet shop because she was always mean to them. So he found a dead mouse and when the owner’s back was turned, he put it in one of the sweet jars! Apparently, he thought, 'I felt like a hero! It was marvellous to be so popular!' But the next day his triumph ended. The shop was closed. He thought the owner must have had a heart attack from finding the mouse but when he got to school he realised she was there, to pick him out and make sure he was caned!
The walls of this room were made of fake chocolate and there was the aroma of chocolate too! Roald and his dog, Chopper, loved chocolate so much that they both had smarties every day after dinner! The museum has several rooms. There is a room where little children can listen to a story, sitting on cushions. You can do arts and crafts, dress up as Roald as a schoolboy, and see his shed where he used to write all his stories. It is the actual shed that was moved from his garden to the museum. On the table was a ball of silver foil. Roald made this by squishing together the wrappers of chocolate he ate every single day when he was writing. I sat in a replica of his chair and pretended to be Roald Dahl writing a story. It was a very fun trip! www.roalddahlmuseum.org

Local teacher and youth mental health advocate wins prestigious leadership award
Ally Onions, Head of Safeguarding and Mental Health at St George’s School Windsor Castle, has been named the winner of the prestigious Emma Pattison Award for Compassionate Leadership by the international Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA).
From establishing the school’s Wellbeing Hub and introducing school dog Olive, to championing a school-wide mindfulness programme and facilitating access to independent counsellors on-site, Onions has pioneered a significant number of initiatives during her 10 years at St George’s, all designed to promote positive wellbeing across the school community.
In 2023, Onions also became a Mental Health First Aid England Instructor, enabling her to deliver accredited training courses in Youth Mental Health First Aid. She has since offered sessions not only to parents and staff at St George’s, but also to teaching staff further afield in both the state and independent sectors.

UK set for a summer of butterflies
The Big Butterfly Count 2026 will take place from 17 July to 9 August inviting people from across the country to help track butterfly populations.
Organised by Butterfly Conservation, the event asks volunteers to spend fifteen minutes spotting and recording butterflies in gardens, parks and countryside. The count runs for three weeks and is open to everyone, regardless of experience.

Goyals celebrates its 60th anniversary
If you have primary or secondary school aged children, chances are you’ve bought your school uniform from Goyals in Maidenhead, run by the very hands-on Seema Goyal. Running a successful business is just one of the roles that keeps Seema busy and this issue she talks to Rachel Bailey about the shop’s 60th anniversary, her passion for charity work and championing local businesses and young people.
This year Goyals celebrates its 60th anniversary. How has the business evolved over the past 60 years?
I started working at Goyals in 1994 aged 19 and it is still, as it was then, best known as a school uniform supplier. Over the years, due to the seasonality of the school uniform business, we have diversified into workwear, chef whites, bespoke uniforms for hotels and even manufacturing scrubs having led the way locally providing PPE during the covid pandemic. We work with some very recognisable names such as Harrods and it still thrills me to see the name of our little shop in Maidenhead up there with them! We’ve also branched out to provide uniform for more schools and clubs reaching as far as Scotland with our online business and we work with no fewer than six factories around the world.
Your anniversary plans kicked off with the sponsorship of a health and well-being event in April. What made you choose that as your key celebration?
Keeping healthy is very important to me and the well-being event seemed a fitting tribute to both my late sister and father-inlaw who suffered with health conditions and are sadly no longer with us but had a hand in starting the business.
Both my sons are doctors – Krish is training to be an orthopedic surgeon and Ashwin is a junior doctor – and they were fully behind the event. So many people suffer with their mental health these days and we wanted to introduce local people to businesses that can be beneficial such as counsellors, gyms etc. We all felt we would rather invest in the local community than host a party, although we did have a cake cutting at the event!
What would be your top health tips for busy parents?
Life can be simpler if you live in your present. Be mindful and make room for quality time spent with family or the people you love.
Goyals currently sponsors 600 families in the local area. What does that involve and how did that come about?
Over the last 60 years we’ve nurtured relationships with local families and made connections through schools in the area. Requests come to us from school offices, families we know and residents at the Holiday Inn in Maidenhead and we help where we can, whether that’s offering free or discounted uniforms. We believe every child should be given a good start to school life and having a new uniform is a small way to help them gain confidence.
Queues for Goyals often snake around the corner during the summer holidays. What advice would you offer to parents buying new school uniforms?
Come and experience the shop. Obviously, there’s a place for buying online, but in person we can measure a child and make sure we get the sizes right. It’s about offering the personal
touch and we are all very friendly and love to chat! I’d say 70% of customers like to leave buying uniforms until the summer holidays, so they may have to queue, but some people have already started coming in and prefer to buy things over the course of a few weeks.
You are often to be found promoting business in local schools and colleges. How important is it to encourage young people to build business and financial skills through young enterprise schemes?
I think it’s very important for young people to have the opportunity to experience different roles before they choose their career path. Young enterprise aims to offer an insight into what it’s like to be a lawyer, for example or the challenges you might face in running your own business. These are mentoring sessions where local business people can answer questions about finances, setting up a business etc.
School education is often lacking in teaching how to apply the skills they learn in a maths class for example. It should be part of the curriculum to teach young people how to apply for a mortgage, run their finances or VAT for a business. These are valuable life skills that I didn’t learn until I was in my late twenties and that is why I am passionate about helping others develop these skills. We also sometimes offer young people a chance to work on the shop floor at Goyals as part of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, and they are taught how to communicate with customers in a safe and protected environment.
You wear a lot of different hats! What other roles are keeping you busy?
I am currently working with the President of UK hospitality looking at apprenticeship schemes that are available within the hospitality industry. I am also a Chairperson for the Maidenhead and Windsor Chamber of commerce, a not for profit that supports local businesses and offers advice for those setting up new businesses. I am working with London’s top 100 entrepreneurs and am the first female in the parliament business club helping to raise funds for Scouting UK.
You are a very busy lady! If you ever have any free time, how do you like to spend it?
Running a business and looking after family has been very fulfilling. For me, it’s all about having a good balance between work and family. My sons are grown but I still like to cook for the family. I enjoy keeping busy. I’m an early riser and I use that time to enjoy walks and meditation before I start my day.

Learning beyond the classroom

Some of the richest and most memorable learning happens beyond the classroom. While some children enjoy the structure of desks, carpet sessions and a teacher at the front, every child gains from opportunities to explore, move, talk, question and experience the world around them.
Furthermore, learning certainly does not have to stop when the school day ends. When children are given the chance to learn through life, nature, play and hands-on experiences, they often develop confidence, curiosity and a deeper understanding of what they are discovering.
The long summer holiday is the perfect time to experience education anywhere. A walk to the park, a trip to the supermarket, baking in the kitchen or helping to wash the car can all build valuable skills. When children are relaxed and engaged, they often absorb more than we realise. They are noticing, questioning, comparing, solving problems and making sense of the world around them.
Outdoor learning is a wonderful example of this. Many schools now use Forest School approaches to give children hands-on opportunities in natural spaces. In a woodland or garden, children can identify plants, compare leaves, search for minibeasts, spot seasonal change and talk about weather, habitats and growth. Physical development is supported through climbing, balancing and lifting. Language grows through conversation and storytelling. Maths appears naturally, as children count sticks, sort stones, measure puddles or notice patterns in petals and bark.
Some families enjoy creating themed weeks during the holidays and this can be a brilliant way to immerse children in a topic.
One week might be all about volcanoes. You could visit a museum together, get them to write to a volcanologist, build a volcano at home, read related books and create fact files or drawings inspired by what they have learned. This immersive approach allows children to deep dive into a subject and make links between reading, writing, speaking, science, art and research in a way that feels exciting rather than forced.
Learning beyond the classroom feels purposeful. Children can see why they are doing something. Reading a recipe helps make lunch. Counting coins matters because they are buying an ice
cream. Writing a list is important because the family needs to remember what to pack. These ordinary moments help children build confidence because the learning is immediate, useful and enjoyable.
We must also remember that life skills are an important part of learning outside the classroom. How do you catch a bus or a train? How do you read a timetable, buy a ticket and know when to get off? How do you plan a meal, shop for the ingredients and then cook it safely? These experiences involve reading, sequencing, money skills, problem solving and independence. They also help children feel more capable in the world around them.
Children do not need expensive days out or perfectly planned activities. Some of the richest learning comes from simple, everyday routines. Gardening teaches patience, care and life cycles. Building a den develops teamwork, creativity and perseverance. A journey on public transport can spark conversations about directions, maps, numbers and the wider community.
Perhaps the most important thing adults can do is slow down and notice the learning already happening. Ask open questions. Wonder aloud. Give children time to think. Follow their interests, even if they seem small. When we value learning everywhere, children begin to see themselves as capable learners everywhere too.

Turning summer into a season of reading

As the summer holidays approach, many parents start thinking about how they will keep their children busy, productive and entertained.
Some may also be concerned about the ‘summer slide’ – the progress lost during the summer holidays, which teachers report can be around a month, particularly if children are not regularly keeping up skills such as reading. For this reason, reading should be an essential part of any summer activity plan.
Here are some simple and effective ways to encourage reading over the summer.
In the first few days of the holiday, visit your local library and (re)introduce your child to the children’s section. Try to make this a weekly habit so it becomes a familiar and enjoyable routine. While you’re there, check to see whether the library is running any summer activities for children such as the annual Summer Reading Challenge (www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk), as these can be motivating and make reading feel more social and engaging. Developing this habit early also helps children feel confident using libraries later in life, whether in school, university or the wider community.
Another tip is setting a reading target with rewards, which can be especially helpful for reluctant readers. Even a small incentive can be a useful starting point. Make sure the target is realistic so your child can achieve it and feel a sense of pride. This could be as simple as reading one chapter book in August or reading for twenty minutes each day.

Activities Extracurricular Activities
We
Encouraging your child to read a book series is another easy win. Once they are hooked on a set of books, there’s no need to keep searching for what to read next. For younger readers, popular series such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Worst Witch or Horrid Henry can be great starting points, while older children might enjoy Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games trilogy or Harry Potter.
You could also refresh or redecorate your child’s bookshelf by donating old books and picking up new ones from charity shops. This can become a fun, creative project, perhaps involving painting or reorganising the space, which helps make reading feel more exciting. It also keeps your child’s reading material fresh and engaging without being expensive.
Finally, try to maintain or re-establish bedtime reading routines. Lighter evenings can make bedtime more challenging, so keeping reading as part of the routine is even more important.

Do audiobooks count?
Long summer car journeys provide a great opportunity to engage with books in a different way. While travelling, try listening to audiobooks as a family. Sharing the experience and discussing the story together can have a strong impact on your child’s interest in reading. Starting a free trial with a service like Audible over the summer can be an easy way to begin.
As a teacher, I am often met with scepticism from parents when I suggest audiobooks. While they may not support decoding skills as directly as reading print, they are highly valuable for developing a love of stories, which is especially important for reluctant readers.
Listening to stories also helps build vocabulary and background knowledge and studies have shown that strong background knowledge can compensate for weaker reading ability. It’s not just about sounding out words but about understanding and making meaning from what is read.
Finally, listening itself is an important skill that is often overlooked, so audiobooks can play a valuable role in your child’s overall literacy development.
Beating emotional exhaustion

Parenting can be emotionally draining. Sleepless nights, poorly children, squabbling siblings and endless to-do lists can leave us feeling alone and unsupported. We worry, we ruminate and we can end up in a cycle where we are tapped out emotionally. While that afternoon espresso might help, finding ways to reduce the emotional load and accompanying exhaustion is more sustainable.
Fill your cup
It’s cliché for a reason: it’s true! To be a positive presence for your child, making time to reset and refill your physical and emotional resources is a vital part of parenting.
Sleep is the obvious way but there are other ways to replenish lost energy. In time-limited days, finding small moments can make a big difference. Consider things that take anywhere from five minutes and are either free or low-cost. It could be sitting quietly in your car for five minutes, closing your eyes and taking some deep breaths; pausing to make a cup of tea and actually sitting quietly to drink it.
Time for yourself is not selfish - it’s an essential part of being ready to lead your family and it’s a great counter to feeling a growing sense of energy-zapping resentment.
Redefining one hundred percent
Sometimes getting up and getting your kids to school in time is the limit of what you can muster. You can only give one hundred percent of what you have on any given day; we all need to get better both at being okay with that and with asking for help!
Learn to be an Emotion Coach
Children get upset, jealous, afraid, angry and all the rest. When they have a physical injury, we help soothe them. With emotional upsets, we often distract or tell them to not to worry or be upset. But in doing this, their feeling doesn’t go away and often gets stronger. The fallout can then be in their behaviour which can add to your emotional exhaustion.
Emotion Coaching is a term coined by John Gottman. It is about guiding children so they feel emotionally soothed and ready to find solutions. So the next time your child doesn’t want to get out of bed, rather than saying: ‘Hurry up, we’re already late ...,’ try: ‘Looks like something is bothering you. Do you want tell me about it?’ This way, you’re inching forward, rather than stalling and building more frustration.

Getting the most out of your family holiday

You’ve booked the holiday and the countdown is on. Next step is making sure it actually feels like a holiday once you’re there! Travelling with kids isn’t about perfection, it’s about smart planning, lowering expectations (just a touch) and creating moments everyone enjoys.
Start with flexible structure
Children thrive on routine but holidays don’t need militarylevel schedules. An overpacked itinerary equals tired kids and stressed parents. Plan one key activity in the morning, keep afternoons flexible and build in downtime.
Food can make or break the day
Hungry kids equals chaos. If you’re eating out, go early to avoid long waits. Mixing eating out with simple meals (picnics, supermarket bits or self-catering) keeps things varied and more affordable. And always have snacks to hand.
Sleep matters more than you think
Late nights can be part of the fun but overtired children derail even the best plans. Pack their nighttime comforters and try to maintain at least some elements of their normal sleep routine, particularly with younger children in a new environment.
Have a ‘bad weather’ plan
Even in peak summer, things don’t always go to plan. Research a couple of indoor options before you travel. Soft play centres, aquariums, museums or even a local shopping centre can save the day.
Keep them entertained (without overthinking it)
A small selection of toys, colouring or a tablet for downtime can go a long way. Travel games, scavenger hunts or letting kids take photos on your phone can also turn ordinary moments into fun ones.

Make sure everyone gets a say
One of the easiest ways to avoid holiday meltdowns is to involve the children in your plans. A sense of ownership in choosing even what you do for part of the day makes the experience more enjoyable for everyone.
When flying, tools like AirHelp (www.airhelp.co.uk) clarify what airlines are obliged to provide when flights are delayed or cancelled, whether meals, accommodation or even compensation. Having the basics covered and knowing where to turn when things go wrong, makes all the difference.
Remember that family holidays aren’t about doing everything, they’re about enjoying what you do manage. Lower the pressure, embrace the chaos and focus on the memories you’re creating together.

UK road trips: tips for making them easier
A UK holiday often means a fair bit of time in the car and a smooth journey can set the tone for the entire trip.
If you can, travel outside peak hours or plan your journey around nap times. Early starts or evening drives can make a big difference, especially with younger children.
Build in planned stops at services with play areas or letting off steam spaces. Even a twenty-minute stop can work wonders to reset everyone’s mood.
As ever, preparation is key. Pack snacks, drinks and entertainment. Audiobooks and playlists keep older children engaged, while younger ones will enjoy simple games like I spy.
Avoid overpacking the car to the point where everything is hard to reach. Keep a bag of essentials close by so you’re not constantly unpacking at the side of the road.
And finally, build in some buffer time. Rushing adds stress, whereas a more relaxed approach makes the journey part of the adventure, not just something to get through.

If you want to get close to nature, plan a cycle or walk or have a picnic with the children without the worry of too much traffic, the following are all great suggestions for a day out.

Clewer Memorial Recreation Ground, Dedworth SL4 5AZ is known to most as the ‘Pirate Park’. The large pirate ship in the sand is the main draw but the park also has the traditional play equipment.

The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden has teamed up with Families Thames Valley East to offer one lucky reader a family day pass (2 adults and 2 children) to visit the attraction dedicated to one of the UK’s most celebrated authors.
The museum has a feast of activities lined up this summer with its Fantastic Foxy Summer programme from Tuesday 21 July to Wednesday 2 September. It’s a six-week celebration of Fantastic Mr Fox, packed with fantastic hands-on fun.
Visitors can craft clay feasts, build junk-model excavators, and enjoy daily storytelling. Families can join an Animation Day to create a stop-motion short film, drawing inspiration from an original Wes Anderson film set on display. There is also the Awesome Animals Village Trail and an Outdoor Writing Workshop with local poet Will Burns.
Every day, families can also drop into the museum’s LEGO activity area to build a host of Roald Dahl animals, from Mr Fox to the Enormous Crocodile. Plus, join in with traditional courtyard games like Pin the Tail on the Fox.
