The Fencing School With an ex British ladies champion and GB squad fencer having recently joined as coach, there‘s never been a better time to enroll in the Fencing School. The school boast excellent results, with one fencer ending up 12th in Nationals (and first out of the London fencers at the nationals), and wining a gold medal at the annual London Regional championships. Tate goes family-friendly This summer the Tate Modern has opened a new extension, aiming to improve the ways the gallery caters for young children and families. Highlights of the new extension include a free viewing platform with 360 degree views across London and a new ‘Start Gallery’ - a dedicated space for families offering an introduction to modern and contemporary art. How to keep your child’s brain ticking over the summer holidays By Liat Hughes Joshi

The long summer holidays are a well-earned break; a time for children to spend whole mornings in their PJs, to build dens, go on endless outings and enjoy a ride on their bikes in the park. But the downside of such a lengthy spell away from school is that learning can slip back significantly, with children often forgetting some of the skills they have learnt.

5. Sneak stealth learning into everyday activities Daily life is full of sneaky little educational opportunities – some so subtle that your children will barely notice what you’re up to. It might be weighing and measuring ingredients when baking cakes, dividing the bill between families in a restaurant, or budgeting in the toy shop. If you get too into this, the kids will inevitably spot what you’re doing and complain, but now and then and you should get away with it.

This popular scheme runs every summer in our public libraries and is designed to encourage children to read throughout the holidays. Usually, those who finish at least six books over the six-week period receive badges, rewards and a certificate at the end, with some schools choosing to hand these out in assembly at the start of the new academic year. Even better: it’s all completely free! Check out the Summer Reading Challenge website for more information, as well as children’s book-related news, chat and competitions. Board games are ideal for those inevitable-toa-British-summer rainy days and many of the more traditional options incorporate maths. For reception children, work out their counting with Kerplunk (they’ll need to check who has the most sticks and the difference) and Snakes and Ladders. For junior school age kids, Monopoly requires dealing with money and addition, subtraction and multiplication. Meanwhile, Sudoku, word search and logic problem books are all brilliant brain stretchers for times when a more solitary activity is needed.

4. Keep a holiday scrapbook

Get your children to share their holiday news with grandparents or friends via good oldfashioned postcards. You could agree a swap with their best friends before heading off for any trips. Younger school-age pupils can practice their letter formation, whilst older ones can look at incorporating some exciting vocabulary into their messages. For keen writers, perhaps find a pen pal – this could even be a cousin who lives far away.

Head to the stationery shop and choose a funky diary or scrapbook and some pens or pencils, then get them started with keeping a record of their most exciting moments of the summer. For younger writers, even a word or sentence under a picture or stuck-in memento is a start, whilst older children might want to put pen to paper and turn the scrap book into a lengthier journal.

Tap into an older child’s interests and suggest they set up a blog about it – it could be sports-related, about cooking or outings they’ve been on. If you’re worried about internet safety, just keep it anonymous or filter out any messages and comments yourself. Another option is to keep the blog private and not actually publish it – they can still show it to friends.

7. Go for some Olympicthemed learning 2016 is an Olympic year, so combine boosting interest in sport with some maths and literacy. Ideas include reading the sports section of the paper or setting up their own medal winners’ league table by country. You could also pick a medal winner’s country each day to research together and find a few facts about.

8. Work on non-academic skills that are useful too With much less going on compared to term time, the holidays are a perfect opportunity to work on age-appropriate skills your child could do with picking up or honing. Improving their swimming, doing their shoelaces up, or getting used to becoming a shade more independent by, say, walking to post a letter or to the corner shop, are all worthwhile ideas. The NCT is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee Year, there’s lots to celebrate! The Clapham & District NCT branch is an active, friendly, volunteer-run branch primarily located in SW4, SW11 & SW12. It offers a wide range of support, information and opportunities to meet other parents. We asked this busy branch for an update on their activities. It is very impressive!

Antenatal courses

The Balham Breastfeeding Café

We offer small friendly classes to help you prepare for labour, birth and your first days with your baby. We have NCT Signature and NCT Essential Antenatal Courses aimed at first time parents; NCT Refresher courses for second-time parents are also available. We also offer additional workshops for those considering a water birth and for parents expecting twins. There is a cost for courses but subsidized places are available for those on lower incomes.

A weekly drop-in providing free support and information from qualified NCT breastfeeding counsellors.

Antenatal welcome evening These sessions are your chance to meet other parents-to-be who live locally and to find out more about the Clapham & District NCT Branch in an informal and relaxed setting.

Events We regularly run social events, often with fundraising raffles and goodie bags. A great way to meet other local parents and to have some fun!

Playgroups We run several weekly drop-in playgroups for bumps, babies and toddlers. There is a small entry fee to cover the cost of refreshments.

The NCT Early Days postnatal courses provide a supportive environment to explore parenthood with a qualified group leader and other new parents in your area. These sessions are designed to help you feel confident about the decisions and choices you make for you and your baby.

Six steps to ease your child into learning to swim By Marjan Moosavi of Blue Wave Swim School

How can I help my child who's afraid of water? How do you encourage my child who is reluctant to get into the swimming pool? We asked Marjan, who has frequently come across these type of questions.

Use bath time to introduce your child to water. Children need to learn to love the water and enjoy being in it, before they can learn to swim. As a parent you can do so much to generate positive feelings for your children when they are in the water. Present your child with regular opportunities to explore the water gently with you right next to them. Use family swim times in swimming pools. It's a good idea to familiarise your child with the swimming pool environment before starting formal lessons. To boost water confidence, nothing works better than fun family swimming and spending “quality time” together in water. Parental presence in the water gives a child a sense of security. Enrol for ‘Parent & Child’ swim lessons. These swimming lessons are a great way to get your child introduced to formal swimming lessons. You need to assist your child to make the connection between swimming and having fun in water. When that happens, the chances are he/she’ll want to do it again and again.

Choose the format of swimming lesson which suits your child. Private lessons can be of particular benefit for children who are shy or lack water confidence. For a water confident child who is more motivated by being around other children, group lessons are a good format. Some children actually learn better when they are in a group of children, it’s more fun and they can copy them. Choose a swim school which is right for you. There is no single way to teach swimming and teaching methods vary significantly from one place to another. While word of mouth brings a certain reassurance, be mindful of the fact that what suits your friend’s child may not necessarily be right for your child and vice versa. Be consistent with lessons. What is outdoor learning? There is a lot of talk about the need to get children more connected with nature and Forest schools are bloooming. We asked Justin Baker of First Hand Experiences to explain what they do and how they offer outdoor learning. First Hand Experiences’ clear ethos is that genuine first hand experiences are the foundations for a child's learning. Learning about the seasons on a screen pales in comparison to picking fruit and seeds under a real tree. This is why on any week, on camp, they venture out on at least three outdoor trips.

What are the activities you offer? “All our camps follow seasonal nature-based themes and are explored through a completely holistic approach. This means during our "Oh Taste and See' themed week for example, we will not only pick fruit and veg at the farm but we might paint it, make a tart from it and sell it at a market on Friday which the children have created themselves. We also dramatise and celebrate our experiences through our specifically written songs and scripts ensuring that the learning experience is remembered and treasured for many years to come.

What about food? Our attitude to food also sets us apart from other camps. We decided right from the beginning that we didn't feel right having children out about in nature having a picnic of a sad sandwich and a packet of crisps. We promote healthy whole food that is seasonal, imaginative and tasty! As well having their pack lunches prepared by our camp chef the children will make their own lunch twice a week and a snack each day often using produce from our excursions.

What does your programme include? In spring we investigate how plants and animals awaken from winter in ponds and gardens, woods and farms. Of course finding these places in and around the concrete of London is definitely a challenge but one we

Treating phobias, bed wetting, physical tics, nail biting and more in 90 minutes When my friend Pauline told me she gave up her one packet a day smoking habit in just one hypnotherapy session, I was amazed. She’s had no cravings since either it seems. So when hypnotherapist Lucia contacted us to share her Rapid Mental Reprogramming Method, I was keen to hear what it is all about. Q: What was ailment or condition treated? A: A few days ago a sweet and very clever young client came to see me. She had been suffering panic attacks linked to claustrophobia for 8 months, plus she talked about initial IBS symptoms and overall strong anxiety and perfectionism since childhood. Because of the issues she was experiencing, she was unable to get to work by any form of transport and she had been off work for 4 weeks when I met her. My client had tried energy healing a few times before coming to see me but said the root of the problem was left untreated by that hence she saw Hypnotherapy as her last resort.

Q: What therapy was used and how long for? A: I use a very powerful, rapid and permanent hypnotherapy method called Rapid Mental Reprogramming Method (RMRM). In just ONE 90 minute session, I guide the client through a deep relaxation process in which through very specific steps the real cause and role of the issue is identified. I then proceed to have an exchange with the client in which I ask them some questions and make some suggestions to bring their understanding of the issue to a higher awareness. Understanding is power and without understanding there cannot be healing. Once the true and deep understanding is set in the client consciousness and sub consciousness, I guide the client through the necessary letting go of the issue and I introduce the client to the very powerful concept that events do not matter in themselves, it’s the meaning we give to them that does. The final part of the treatment consists of very directive reprogramming instructions. This is where the mind software gets updated and new empowering files get installed. Before leaving the studio, the client is given their own hypnotic Audio to listen to every day for at least 21 days - that’s up to how long the brain takes to reprogram itself when exposed to a repetitive message.
