Editorâ€™s Note I've found myself moving away from social media for a while now. I find it draining on my time and mind and often come away from it (after some unknown period of swiping time) feeling kind of...blah. But for my now teenage son, it's all new and exciting and a normal part of life and communication with his friends. There are worries - from online bullying to graphic and explicit content - which we of course want to protect our children from. But with so many different social apps it's really something that's difficult to avoid, no matter how much we want to and it really can have an impact on our self-esteem. So I found the article on page 8 - while focusing on girls in particular - really interesting and relevant to all, whatever gender. At this time of year, I like to say a HUGE thank you to all of our advertisers, distributors, contributors and of course all you readers who continue to make it possible for us to produce this magazine! Families benefit from 30 hours free childcare scheme Following the launch of the Government's 30 hours free childcare offer for working parents on 1st September, parents have been speaking of the positive impact this is having on their lives. Parents of eligible three and four year olds, who have registered a place on the scheme, could save around £5,000 per year per child. There have already been thousands of families across the country who have joined the scheme which aims to help balance jobs and family lives. Stephen Hillier, County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “The cost of childcare has often been a barrier allowing parents to continue or return to the workplace. The 30 hours free childcare scheme really supports families to get a positive work-life balance whilst the children build good social skills and have a wide range of opportunities to learn as they play." Local boy wins top writing Competition! Brighton boy, Frasier Cox has been announced as the winner of Book People’s Bedtime Story Competition. Frasier’s winning story ‘There’s a Little Boy the Same as Me’ was selected from more than 1,300 entries into the nationwide competition which challenged young authors aged between 5 and 11 to create a book on the theme of friendship. As the overall winner of Book People’s Bedtime Story Competition, Frasier will get the chance to work with publisher Little Tiger and top illustrator, Alison Brown to turn his story into a picture book which will be available exclusively from thebookpeople.co.uk in 2018. Frasier, will also receive £250 in books to enjoy at home plus £250 worth of books for his school. Nine-year-old Frasier, who has autism, centred his entry around a hypothetical friendship with a boy who is just like him. However, the boy in question is a refugee who shares the same interests and childhood hopes as Frasier. The judging panel was led by Head Judge Claudia Winkleman who said “Frasier’s story, is incredibly touching and thought provoking and it’s absolutely remarkable a 9-year-old boy has written such a thoughtful story.''

Hope Tree Christmas Cards for Brain Tumour Research Hope Tree Cards Pioneering charity Brain Tumour Research has taken an innovative approach to their range of Christmas cards this year, signing up supporter and artist, Caroline Copland, to design a new card for 2017. Caroline, who sadly lost her mother Janet to a brain tumour three years ago, was inspired by the Christmas Hope Trees which decorate the charity’s Research Centres of Excellence across the UK each year. The Hope Tree cards will join other festive favourites in the charity’s range. All cards are priced at £4 per pack of ten, with at least 60% of the proceeds going towards supporting vital brain tumour research. Brain Tumour Research is the only national charity in the UK focused on funding sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours, which kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. The 9 metre tall castle is bigger than a four bedroom house with its own moat, drawbridge and three turrets.

Aimed at children 7-14 it features three slides and two poles and lots of interactive elements split into three houses named after three of the most significant owners in the evolution of the Castle: Boleyn, Waldegrave and Astor.

There is a Dining Hall complete with sights and sounds (and an exit through the fireplace).

Children from Hever Primary School were among the first to try out the new play area and gave it the thumbs up. Duncan Leslie CEO said: “This has been quite an undertaking doing this project and a great team effort pulling it

Tudor Towers was designed by FRLA Ltd and constructed by West Sussex-based Duncan and Grove to replace the former Tower Maze playground. The playground is now open to the public.

What's your Christmas tradition? Christmas is a special time for families, but I know many parents are dismayed at the whole commercialization of this time of year. It’s not all about the presents and the toys and how much stuff we’ve got is it? There’s more to it than that. It’s also about spending time together and being a family in whatever shape or form, and it’s about making memories. I know many families have their own Christmas traditions, and this can be a great way to make this time special. Here are some ideas that parents have shared:

One Mum told me that throughout the year she makes a note of anything important, funny or interesting that happens to her children. She jots each event on a piece of notepaper, folds it up and puts it in a jar. At the end of the year the jar holds a record of achievements and special memories e.g. ‘Charlie swam a whole length without armbands’ ‘Sophie had her story read out in class’ and ‘Eva took part in her first Fun Run for charity.’ Then on Christmas Eve she lights candles in the sitting room and sets up a tepee kept especially for the occasion. Everyone sits inside, and they take it in turns to put their hand in the jar and read about the memories from the year. I thought this was lovely, I wish I had thought of doing something similar when my boys were young.

As Winter takes hold and seasonal excitement starts to build we look forward to a host of festive family times and traditions in the run up to Christmas. The preparations seem to begin earlier and earlier each year with Nativity rehearsals stretching right back to the start of the Autumn term! The poor little mites are absolutely exhausted by the time they break up, cranking out a good three or four performances in the last week of term. Sadly none of ours demonstrate a natural stage presence... more the type to protest with arms folded and frowned expression as the rest of the

Another family always buys new pyjamas for the kids, and on Christmas Eve they change into them and go on a drive round the local area looking at the Christmas lights on people’s houses. There is one house in particular that everyone looks forward to seeing. The owner seems to be trying to outdo all the others and every year something new has been added, it even has a great big inflatable Father Christmas in the garden. This next idea I think is rather nice and those of you with a new baby might want to start this tradition now. The Mum who told me about it says that every year she buys one new Christmas tree bauble. She keeps them in a special box, and when her daughter grows up and leaves home she is going to give them to her to put on her own tree.

They must feel pretty stuffed by the time they've delivered all those pressies! Mornings start early!!! The children rush downstairs to find Daddy asleep on the sofa dressed as Santa. They were fooled for a total of 2 years that he was the real thing, and now expect Santa Daddy on the sofa as much as they expect to find gifts under the tree. With 4 children boiling over with

excitement all at once the first two hours of Christmas Day can be pretty full on. Over the years we've decided to just let them get on with it and embrace the chaos of paper flying, desperate attempts to remove items from packaging and emergency battery hunts. By 9am the house looks destroyed, but the children are calm and occupy themselves with their gifts long enough for Daddy and I to recuperate.

The View From Dads That Don't Believe The Hype with Dan Flanagan

What Dads Want For Christmas – Just Don’t Get Me Socks Again PLEASE!!!! Yes, it’s nearly that time of year again. Tis’ the season to argue with the inlaws, spend a fortune on rubbish you don’t really need and get pincered into worried states of panic about what you have forgotten. Worst of all is sweating buckets knowing that when your better half says “Oh don’t bother about me present-wise” they actually mean the complete opposite and god-forbid you actually take them on their word. Conversely, when it comes to Christmas ideas for dad, present buying is usually quite simple. Just stick with the tried and tested formula of picking something DIY, football, cars, golf, or novelty jumper related then you are onto a safe bet for some Richie Cunningham type Christmas joy. Well, I am not sure how to break it to you, but not all dads, in fact, a lot of

dads HATE this kind of tat. But we are just too polite to say anything. If you are in the market to surprise your old fella, with something that makes his little eyes light up like he has just discovered the cure to male pattern baldness and midlife spread comes wrapped up in a Victoria Secret’s Model catalogue, a flask of tea and a locked garden shed – then this is for you. If you are like me having spent 30 years being interested in clothes and dressing well, as soon as you have hit 40 or that little bundle of joy hits your world, your time and wallet rapidly moves clothes way down your priority list. No point spending a fortune on nice shirts only for little Jimmy to pee, poo and puke down it. However, if you are not willing to dive into elasticated high-waist corduroys in colours more suited to your average UKIP supporter and start rocking your work shirts on your day off, then perhaps something smart from a brand like Pretty Green, would go down quite nicely.

Looking sharp and smelling good should be a priority for dads. Letting yourself go to pot is just not on fellas. Just because we are rushed off our feet doing important stuff, it doesn’t mean we can’t spend a few minutes freshening up every now and again. I don’t mean overdoing like a hormonal thirteen-year-old getting ready for his first date. No, just taking and making an effort. I’m sure it will be fully appreciated by anyone you live with or is in standing distance of your commute. Is your dad out of shape? Well, give the poor fella a break. Have you been trying to tell him he needs to do some exercise subtly over the last few years? Turn him into a runner! Bright flashing lights, neon hi-viz, reflective water bottles and special running socks. Force him into it. One day he’ll thank you. (Probably not immediately – think of it more as an investment) if he doesn’t thank you at least he will be quicker if you ask him to run down the shops for 20 fags, for you.
