Music Bugs Eastbourne preschool classes to launch in October
Music Bugs sensory music and singing classes for children aged Newborn to 4 years of age have arrived in Eastbourne and the surrounding area. Much more than a musical experience, classes focus on encouraging children to develop and grow in a gently structured and play-based environment and support key areas of development including language development, early numeracy skills, social skills and physical development. During a typical 40 minute session, you can expect lots of songs, knee bouncers, finger play rhymes, nursery rhymes, action songs, sharing songs and silly songs. Using a fantastic variety of interactive and fun props, children are encouraged to play with puppets, pom-poms, scarves, rhythm sticks, parachutes, balls, bubbles, percussion instruments and hobby horses. Why PSSA Youth Theatre Group is such a huge hit with the locals… The lights, the costumes, the performance, the rapturous applause... it’s a moment that every young child and teenager should experience!
Every young performer has their own unique journey whilst rehearsing and learning techniques during the show process, is equally as important to the experience gained on stage on show week. They make friendships with local youngsters and by dancing, singing and acting their way through rehearsals, the cast members gain the self confidence to have fun and really let themselves go, Not only is the whole process fun, its affordable! There is a show fee of £38.50, but after that rehearsals are just £2 per hour.

Review Brighton Sea Life Centre by Jen Brammer
As luck would have it, we planned to visit the Sea Life Centre on the rainiest day this summer! I’ve never been before and there was a big group of us, three adults and six children from 5 - 12 years old. You do need to be prepared to queue for a little while, but it is worth the wait. On entering the main room, it wasn’t only the five year olds who were excited with the rainbow lighting and dark surroundings. The variety or sea mammals, creatures, crustaceans was impressive, considering the size of the space. It was great to see so many unusual sea creatures from leopard Morays, to Giant Japanese spider crabs. You could easily spend a couple of hours seeing, and most impressively touching starfish for example, something we’d never done before - fantastic. I would urge everyone with Primary age children to get the Dive Log Book on the way in , as it takes you through the entire experience, and makes sure you don’t miss out on seeing anything. `the kids just love getting their books stamped and finishing the whole trail off to win their prize at the end. The questions were fun, and as a group the kids enjoyed finding the answers together.
There are also lots of talks and shows going on in the auditorium - so don’t miss out on that, I made sure we went to see the turtles being fed, and if you’re lucky you may end up throwing a lettuce leaf or two. But it’s not all about Loggerhead Turtles and Short Snout Seahorses (my personal favourites) don’t miss out on the Octopus Garden, to see a huge range of eight legged molluscs. The Sea Life Centre in Brighton is easy to find, just at the foot of the pier - and a great way to while away the day. Don’t forget, once you’re in, you can go in and out all day, which really adds value to your visit.You can plan your day and your visit here

Go Ape Review
by Mary Greening My boys and I have just experienced a fab tree top adventure at Tilgate Park in Crawley.
It is great to have a junior Go Ape circuit available in Sussex where our little monkeys can explore the tree tops! The Go Ape Junior has been up and running for about four months now and on arrival at the log cabin, we were met with an enthusiastic, young, happy team who were ready to help and encourage any little explorers. My older boy of 7yrs can be quite nervous of heights and my youngest of 4yrs is just 1cm over the minimum height required of 1 metre. Obviously, I went on with them like the filling in a sandwich! All of us were excited to give it a go. There are two levels to the junior circuit. We ventured around the first level circuit quite well with my 7yr old seeming quite unperturbed that he was so high up. As for the little legs of my 4 year old, whilst fairly fearless, (as second siblings usually are!) he did struggle to stretch his legs to reach one part of the course. Hence to say an adult required. Both level one and two circuits end in a great zip wire ride and once everyone had landed safely to the ground again we all felt exhilarated. I would simply say, have a go at this monkey business it’s great fun!
Tips of the day
It is £3.00 for the car park - change only accepted. Book online, they are busy, but well organised. This saves turning up and being disappointed. There is Adult Go Ape adventure also.

Magical adventures, intelligent animals, boys who are really girls and women who are really men…It must be the pantomime season again. Rebecca James takes a look at some of the weird and wonderful traditions behind the Christmas panto.
Where did it all start?
The British Christmas panto has mopped up all sorts of different influences along the way, but it can mainly be traced back to the old 16th-century Italian commedia dell’ arte tradition, a populist kind of travelling theatre performed by wandering actors. Because of language and communication problems, these shows increasingly focused on physical acting, slapstick, comedy and funny costumes – a style which would also later develop in Britain into entertainments as diverse as Punch and Judy shows and Victorian Music Hall. Comic theatrical presentations featuring commedia dell’ arte characters like Harlequin, Clown and Pulcinella became popular across Europe. The first use of the word ‘pantomime’ was in the Harlequin-inspired ‘ballet-pantomime’, The Loves of Mars and Venus, staged at Lincoln Inn Field Theatre in London in 1717. The first ‘modern’ pantomime dates back to 1773, when the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane presented Jack the Giant Killers, followed within the next three decades by Robinson Crusoe, Aladdin, Babes in the Wood and Cinderella.
Cross-dressing It was the famous 19th-century clown, Joseph Grimaldi, who pioneered the tradition of the Pantomime Dame, or an old woman played by a male comedian – Grimaldi’s roles included Queen Rondabellyana in Harlequin and the Red Dwarf and Dame Cecily Suet in Harlequin Whittington (the mind boggles). The Pantomime Dame is often the hero’s mother, for example Widow Twankey in Aladdin or Dame Trott in Jack and the Beanstalk. The Ugly Sisters were first played by men in 1860, at the Royal Strand Theatre, London. The Ugly Sisters differ from the Dame in that they have to be funny and the villains at the same time. Further cross-dressing was introduced into panto around the 1880s, with the introduction of the ‘Principal Boy’, played by a girl. The public demand to see comely young ladies tackling the roles of Jack, Dick Whittington, Aladdin etc is very easily explained. In an era when ladies were corseted and crinolined almost into invisibility, and in which even the legs of pianos were covered in drapes for modesty’s sake, the sight of an attractive young female clad in calf -hugging tights was always guaranteed to swell box-office figures.
Animal magic
As the 19th century progressed, the subjects of pantomime shifted to fairy tales, with interludes of juggling and acrobatics, providing wholesome entertainment for children, while panto performances also became particularly associated with (and limited to) the Christmas season. The Victorian era also saw the increasing importance of animal roles in pantos. Famous panto animals include Jack’s cow, Aladdin’s camel and Dick Whittington’s cat, not to mention Priscilla the Goose and Puss in Boots – many actors have specialized in these so-called ‘skin parts’, and skilled animal impersonators can achieve their own cult status, such as Australia’s Radish the Pantomime Horse, believed to be the world’s only line-dancing panto nag.
Top of the bill
No modern Christmas panto would be complete without its ‘celebrity’ guest star, usually a soap star, comedian, TV presenter or retired sportsperson, to top the bill – a tradition which dates back to the great 19th-century impressario Augustus Harris, who would regularly hire stellar contemporary artistes for his Drury Lane panto performances.
Audience participation and double entendre
In no other show are the audience expected to join in quite as much as in a panto. The villian must always be booed and hissed everytime they appear on stage; when the villain is creeping around or up behind the hero, the audience must warn them by shouting ‘He’s Behind You!’; and then, of course, if a character tells a fib or gets something wrong the audience are expected to respond with cries of ‘ Oh no if he isn’t,’ or ‘oh yes he is!’. There’s often a song and usually towards the end of the show some children are invited up on stage to join in. There’s also lots of double entendre – more for the adults in the audience than the kids whose heads, in theory, it goes right over.
Modern pantomime
There’s no such thing really as ‘traditional’ pantomime. The whole point of the genre is that it’s constantly evolved and adapted throughout its history to keep up with changing public tastes. Panto provides an important source of income for many theatres and is also often the first – and potentially formative – experience young children have of the theatre. A rollicking Jack and the Beanstalk or Dick Whittington could have them coming back to the theatre for years to come. Which is why pantomime is still just as relevant today as it ever has been. Oh yes it is…
Did you know? To this day, evil panto characters enter the stage from
the left, and goodies from stage right, echoing a commedia dell’ arte tradition which always placed the entrances to heaven and hell on these respective sides of the stage. Did you know? The expression ‘slapstick’ is another commedia dell’ arte legacy. Harlequin used to carry around a wooden sword-cum-wand which could be used to make a slapping sound when he ‘hit’ people.
