The Summer Reading Challenge 2017 The annual Summer Reading Challenge to children is simple. During the holidays they are encouraged to read six or more books of their choice - fact books, joke books, picture books or audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library. There are collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate for every child who completes the Challenge, which is run by independent charity The Reading Agency. Children can sign up at their local library from the end of June onwards and all materials are absolutely free. This year's theme is Animal Agents, introducing young readers to a variety of clever creatures, specially trained to use their skills and natural instincts to unravel mysteries. Animal Agents is illustrated by Tony Ross, illustrator of the hugely popular Horrid Henry series. He is published all
over the world; his awards and nominations include the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, Kate Greenaway Medal, and the Smarties Prize. The Challenge is open to all primary school children and is designed for all reading abilities. Schools work with local libraries and give out information to encourage children to take part, and most libraries run Summer Reading Challenge linked early years activity for pre-schoolers. I always feel so lucky to live in this part of the country at this time of year. We are surrounded by rolling countryside including the South Downs and Ashdown Forest for Summer walks and picnics. We have the beaches and cliffs down on the coast and vibrant seaside towns. This year we've decided to make a real effort to explore and appreciate this part of the country and make the most of the wonderful landscape right on our doorstep. So rather than driving for miles for our weekend breaks we have been visiting some great local locations. So far our mini adventures have taken us to stay in a Shepherd's hut at Bentley Wildflower and Motor
Museum, a yurt at the wonderful Wowo Campsite near Sheffield Park and a city break in Brighton. There’s a lot to be said for a short break close to home. You avoid the stress of a long drive, you can make the most of your Friday evening (arriving at your accommodation 30 minutes after picking the kids up from school!) and if anything goes wrong, home/the local doctors/ the teddy bear your child HAS to cuddle to get to sleep are all within close range. These mini adventures have also introduced us to the joy of Glamping. My husband asked me earlier in the year if I was up for camping this summer and with four children in tow (the youngest being a manic 21 month old) I just couldn't face it. We compromised on Glamping and for now it's the perfect solution!

Again, depending on the venue, you may well have somewhere to cook and some basic cooking utensils. All this means that you can enjoy being close to nature with your family without the stress of assembling your dwelling and figuring out how to eat without a kitchen for an entire weekend!! We have found that Glamping has allowed us the freedom to relax as soon as we arrive on site. The time we might spend busying ourselves setting up camp is now spent with the children, exploring our new surroundings and having fun.
I've noticed that Glamping is becoming more widely available than ever. So many local bed and breakfast, festivals and smaller campsites seem to be adapting their facilities to offer high end camping accommodation, be it a bell tent, cabin or even a tree house. The Five A’s Of Summer Holidays Take a moment to remember your holidays when it was just you and your partner. Those golden days when you could do whatever you wanted. Whether it was a two-day walking trip around Rome or a driving holiday around the mountainous countryside of Ireland. Or sitting in your pants and playing Xbox because you hadn’t told your other half you’d booked a day off work. Hold those thoughts close. As soon as you’ve had kids, all that goes right out of the window. Nowadays, you can either risk a fine by taking your kids out of school and afford a decent holiday or get held to ransom by greedy firms looking to mug you out of your hardearned moola. Rather than allow this utterly heinous crime take place, just read this and save your money.
Airports Hours of queues, baggage, searches, broken promises and delays. It’s sitting amongst people you’d actively avoid if you saw them in the street. Or having to put up with other people’s parenting that’s got more in common with a shindig at the Jeremy Kyle green room. Airplane Once you’re in the air, you realise you have several hours in a pressurised tube, and you’ve left the felt tip pens in the other bag. The one in the hold. The one you can’t get to. The one, your child, desperately needs. Right now. And you brought a book to read on the flight, you poor misguided fool! Apartment The word ‘apartment’ may be stretching it a bit. It will be a small, cramped box with some internal walls. But you get what you pay for, and in this instance, you’ve paid over the odds for a bedroom with nowhere to hang clothes.
A bathroom door that didn’t close properly. An electric hob that the caretaker couldn’t work out how to use. A kitchen designed to encourage you to eat at the local restaurants. And a floor that resembles the Sahara after two days of hitting the beach. Arguments Like conspirators to a grand plot, you kids will have had discussions before the holiday on how best to mess you up. It works like this. One child will be the most hyper child in existence. While the other is the personification of angelic obedience and calm. You’ll eventually solve the puzzle of why Child A is upset/hyper/ hungry/tired/bored and as soon as they are placated Child B will start acting up. And on it goes. For the entire holiday. At the end of a week away, your negotiation skills will be so honed that you could single-handedly solve the Syrian crisis. All Abroad Pre-kids your idea of a day on the beach went like this. Put a towel on beach, apply sun cream, open book, read, occasional dip in the sea,
repeat process until the sun goes down. Post-kids it goes like this. Put a towel on beach, attempt to put sun cream on kids, realise sand has got into the lunch box. Try and get kids into swimsuits. Tell kids there is nothing to be scared of it’s just a wave, rescue football from the sea, repeat until the sun goes down. All this pales in comparison to the day that you accidentally pitch up at a nudist beach. With this, you'll spend the next few hours answering questions about wrinkly German tourists. The lesson here is that whatever plans you have should be forgotten. The minute you include your children, the chances of you having the holiday you want are over. Stay at home, stick the kids in summer club or bin them off to the grandparents as much as possible. Life’s a beach. Yeah right. Teaching kids about the importance of recycling Recycling and fun don’t often appear in the same sentence. As adults, we tend to treat recycling as a chore, but for children, there’s a lot of tactile and colourful enjoyment to be had from it. It’s our job to instil a sense of what recycling is all about, but it doesn’t have to involve a drawn out and technical lesson on the greenhouse effect or the ozone layer.
Children love animals
Showing children that animals are much happier in a clean and rubbish free environment will mean they use empathy to gain a solid concept of how rubbish waste directly affects living things. You could take them to the park and explain that a bit of plastic on the floor could be eaten by a bird and make it unwell. Although the consequences might not be so obvious to children, they become more obvious in relation to animals they care about.
Get creative
Being tactile when it comes to recycling will really help kids get used to putting different types of rubbish in different places. Maybe build your own colourful recycling boxes for the house so they can sort plastic, glass, organic waste and cardboard into specific places. For young kids, this will also help give them a sense of what different materials are made out of. You could even make a game of it to see how quickly you can sort the rubbish into the correct bins.

See the process
Visit the recycling centre to show them what happens with the rubbish they make. Often these are large buildings with trucks entering in and out – which in itself makes it an entertaining place to visit. Alternatively, you could take them to the bottle recycling centre and let them throw in the bottles which smash on the other side. Explain that it doesn’t matter that the bottle is broken because in the end, it will be broken up into even smaller parts to be remade into a new bottle.
Use interactive media
There are plenty of entertaining online resources which visually and sometimes interactively demonstrate the nature of recycling, and equally, the damaging effects of not recycling. Colourful, illustrated and interactive resources like The Rubbish Journey (therubbishjourney.com) make the experience of learning a more enjoyable one. In return for a sweet reward, you could even ask them to draw their own poster to go above the recycling bin at home!
Getting in the Swim of things Swimming is the only sport that could save your child’s life. With many of us heading off to the beach, pool or holiday resort this summer, it makes sense to seriously consider how and when your child is going to learn to swim.
Self-teaching
Talk to the swimming providers
One option is teaching your child yourself. Most children love going to the pool and with your persistence, and their willingness to practice, should learn to float and swim doggy paddle well enough to get out of trouble if they fall into the water. However, if you don’t have the time or confidence to do this, or if you would like your child to be able to dive and swim with an ease that enables them to keep swimming length after length, you will need to consider booking some lessons.
Speak directly to those you are considering - tell them about your child, what you are looking for and ask what suitable lessons they have. Pose as many questions as you want and don’t be hurried into accepting unsatisfactory answers. Ask them to send all the information they have for you to consider.
Ask around
Look at the interaction between the instructors and the children.
Ask to observe lessons
Get recommendations from friends and family and ask about their experiences. If possible, ask the children for their feedback too.

This is very dependent on your child (and your budget!) The smaller the group, the more individual attention your child will get. 1-2-1 sessions are more expensive but great for shy children who need more attention. Highlights Summer Fun at Fishbourne Roman Palace Beat the boredom blues this summer with some exciting events at Fishbourne Roman Palace.

Pirates & Princesses Adventure Cruises on the Wey & Arun Canal
Special themed Pirates & Princesses Adventure Cruises will be running on The Wey & Arun Canal on Thursday 27th July, Wednesday 9th August and Thursday 24th August.
