But don’t throw out the towel or banish your boots just yet; recycle them and help save money and the environment. Many areas in Surrey have a weekly collection for clothes and home textiles while everyone can use recycling banks at community recycling centres or at locations like car parks and supermarkets. All clothes and home textiles including towels, sheets, pairs of shoes, bags and socks can be recycled. Recycling them could save up to £4 million a year, which could be spent on other vital services. It also contributes towards a better environment.

s a mum of three children, who runs her own business and also donates time to the local community, I know that having a full life can be rewarding but also exhausting and not always that good for our mental health. For me, it can be the little everyday irritants that push me over the edge and I find mindfulness helpful in keeping my stress levels under control.

Mindful Walking

Mindfulness is about focusing on the moment and you can easily weave it in to your daily activities, without having to make time for it. It can be practised in many ways, from meditation through to painting. As a busy mum, the practices help me cope with everyday life.

Whenever you feel you are having a challenging moment with your children, take a breathing break to calm down and clear your mind. Take a few conscious inhalations through your nostrils, breathing in deeply all the way into your abdomen and exhaling as slowly as you possibly can.

Morning Shower The morning shower is a fantastic opportunity for a few minutes of mindfulness. You are already taking this time out, so, instead of making mental to do lists, try to be fully present with your experience. Feel the water running down your back, smell the shampoo, give yourself a short scalp massage and gently soap your body. It won’t take any longer than your usual shower, but it allows you to have a few minutes of relaxation for yourself before the “storm.”

The Mindful To-Do-List It is easy to be overwhelmed by incessant to-dolists that are full of “I should do” and “I have to” which are mostly unexamined claims stemming from our attempts to be perfect. Just sit with your list for a moment and question each item. Would the world really come to an end if you were to remove a few things from it?

When was the last time you really tasted and appreciated your food? Start each meal with two to three mindful bites, smelling the food, looking at it and chewing it slowly. You could also make this a family experience and ask everyone to use their senses to describe what they eat.

Every time you walk outside with your children, leave your phone in your bag or at home and be present with the process of walking. Feel your feet touching the ground, notice the rays of sunshine on your face and the wind playing with your hair. Be present in the moment.

Don’t say ‘yes’ to everything. In order to be able to continue giving, you need to be mindful of when you need refuelling and at what point your body needs to rest. Sometimes resting is the most productive thing to do.

Count your Blessings The mind always focuses on what’s next, without being fully able to appreciate and rejoice in what you have at any given time. Every morning or evening, think of or write down between three and five things that you appreciate and for which you are thankful (big things like a healthy child and small things like a moment of quiet after everyone leaves the house).

e all know that learning to read is important. Research shows that people without good literacy skills do worse in education and are more likely to be unemployed or even suffer from health and relationship problems. But developing literacy skills is about much more than reading words on paper: it can mean being read to, listening to pre-recorded stories and (perhaps most importantly) learning to make up stories for ourselves.

How to make your own story stones

The stories children hear shape their view of the world. Most small children live in quite a limited environment. Stories are a way of expanding their world. They can also help to teach them how to deal with real life situations. Researchers have found that the brain activity that occurs when we read fiction is very similar to experiencing that situation in real life, so reading about a situation helps children work out how to solve it in the real world. And stories even affect a child’s social behavior.

You can buy story stones of course, but where is the fun in that? Collecting stones from a walk, or a visit to the beach, is a great experience in itself, and decorating them at home

Scientists have found that children who have fiction read to them regularly find it easier to understand other people – show more empathy and have better developed theory of mind (the ability to understand that other people have different thoughts and feelings to us). These skills are essential for understanding and predicting other people’s thoughts and behavior – and that in turn is an essential basis for developing effective social skills.

2. 3. Imagination.

Step 1: Collect your stones (or if you are

desperate you can buy them from a garden centre!). Try to find different shapes since that will ensure that there are lots of options later on. You can get them at the beach or on a walk. Often once you have started this sort of activity you will find a child pouncing on a stone in the fields and announcing it is perfect for a particular image.

If you’re rushing around looking after small children, it can be hard to find the time to sit down and read to them every day. Parents also might not feel comfortable reading aloud to their children no matter how much they’d like to, through lack of confidence, or worries about their own literacy skills.

Step 2: Dump the stones into the sink, fill the sink with water, and have someone who loves to play in water scrub each one with a brush.

Step 3: Put the stones out to dry carefully. Make sure they are dry before you try to draw on them.

Children will frequently consume stories without reading – listening to written or made-up stories, or (perhaps most importantly) as story creators. These activities are essential to their imaginative and intellectual development, as well as being the foundation of a love of reading. Supporting and encouraging story-telling as well as story-listening is something you can do to help your children develop literacy skills. Story stones are one way of doing this that is cheap (almost free) and fun for

MultiSports Guildford MultiSports Guildford are running their Summer Holiday Camp from Mon 23 July - Fri 27 July. The one week course is suitable for boys and girls of all abilities, with half days (9.30am12.30pm) for 4-6 year olds and full days (9am-4pm) for 6-16 year olds. The Grand Arena plays host to the famous Bolddog Ling motorcycle stunt team. There are two show jumping classes with some of the countries best known horse and rider combinations.
