The Hen House Launches Crèche

Martial X Academy Introduces Ninja Tots

The Hen House in Haslemere is excited to announce the launch of its new crèche service, designed for children aged 2–4 years. Registration and bookings are now open. Hoe Bridge School Enters an Exciting New Chapter Creating Woking’s First AllThrough Independent School

Hoe Bridge School has embarked on a new transformative phase as it merges with Greenfield School in Woking — a strategic partnership that will create the town’s only all through, coeducational school for children aged six months to 16 years.

Educational continuity is widely regarded as a key benefit of an all-through model. Remaining within one school community allows pupils to progress through each stage of their education in a familiar environment, supported by staff who know them well. This long-term approach helps to build confidence, emotional wellbeing and strong relationships between pupils, families and teachers.

Hoe Bridge will be the only school in Woking offering education from six months to 16 years. The expanded provision will strengthen the local educational landscape by offering families a high-quality, co-educational option that prepares pupils for GCSEs and beyond.

The school describes its future as one of innovation, unity and lifelong learning, calling the merger an exciting milestone for both the school and the wider community.

Families interested in learning more are invited to attend the school’s Open Morning on Thursday 30 April. Further details and registration information can be found at www.hoebridgeschool.co.uk.

As early years specialists increasingly highlight the importance of toddlers developing confidence, coordination and the ability to follow instructions in group settings, structured movement-based activities are gaining real momentum. In response, Martial X Academy has launched Ninja Tots, a new programme for children aged 18 months to 4 years.

The sessions are designed as a first step in a child’s martial arts journey, building confidence, balance, listening skills and teamwork through games, guided exercises, songs and play. Each week introduces a different element of the martial arts ethos in a fun, nurturing environment. Ninja Tots sits within the academy’s wider pathway, with classes available from early years through to adults, including women-only kickboxing, supporting progression at every stage. https://martialxacademy.co.uk.

With the recent appointment of Mr Ben Edwards as Director of Sport, King Edward’s is poised to continue its rapid rise in both participation and performance levels for its 480 pupils within its inclusive and aspirational sporting programme.

In 2025 pupils enjoyed the highest level of sporting success with the U14 Girls’ Netball team winning the National Trophy, the Boys U15 Football team reaching the final of the English Schools Football Association Small Schools Cup, and the Boys U14 Hockey team reaching the National Cup finals. Recent successes highlight the diversity of a broad and inclusive provision with pupils winning the mixed team event at the English Schools Ski Association National Championships, and the boys’ and girls’ Padel teams winning silver medals at the National School Championships. Individual successes and recognition have included international selection in swimming and hockey following in the footsteps of Old Witleian, Toby Roberts.

Girls competitive sport is thriving at King Edward’s; currently over 50 girls’ teams represent the school in sports including cricket (under the expert direction of Rikki Clarke - former England cricket international and Surrey captain), netball and hockey to football, padel, cross country, biathlon, swimming, table tennis, and tennis amongst others, overseen by a dedicated Head of Girls’ Games. Whether part of the Elite Performance Pathway or simply enjoying sport for pleasure at King Edward’s, its highly experienced teachers, professional coaches and excellent facilities provide a perfect environment for every pupil, regardless of their sporting goals or aspirations to thrive and enjoy physical activity on their terms.

Getting your family on the same page

Before the start of term, a friend of mine invites her sons to what has become a ritual: their family meeting. Instigated when they were in primary school, the whole family sees the value in contributing to these get-togethers. Family life feels calmer and more predictable, with everyone on the same page.

While my friend uses family meetings mainly for back-to-school organisation, they can be useful for so much more. They cover what’s coming up, what might not be going so well and how to move forward together as a team. Meetings work well ahead of big transitions: a new school or term, an upcoming event or changes within the family.

Why are these meetings such a powerful parenting tool?

Because children feel included. They’re more likely to buy into plans when they’ve had a say and even if they don’t express it, they appreciate the clarity that comes from knowing what to expect.

Family meetings reduce chaos, avoid last-minute surprises and help manage expectations around responsibilities, activities and changes of routine. We’re used to having meetings at work; this really isn’t that different.

Here are some well-tested tips:

Have an agenda - a clear agenda helps everyone see what will be discussed and creates a natural to-do list. When children contribute ideas and see them written down, they feel heard and valued and are far more motivated to follow through.

The calendar - create a simple monthly calendar for the term. Start with birthdays, school events, sports fixtures, playdates, assigning each child their own colour. Then invite your children to add things they’d like to do. This naturally leads to conversations about responsibilities too. Who helps with what? Who prefers feeding the dog rather than walking him? The bonus for parents: less nagging and more chances to acknowledge your children’s contributions.

Clear expectations - busy schedules, homework, sleep and limited downtime all add pressure. Talking through expectations for screen time, bedtimes, getting ready for school or homework helps everyone feel prepared. By planning ahead, things are more likely to go right and it’s easier for you to stay calm when they don’t. Oh – and have some favourite snacks on hand to help make the meeting a warm, inviting place for conversation.
