First Aid with Bertie is a brand new and exciting programme designed by experts at St John Ambulance aimed at teaching children between the ages of 5 – 11 basic first aid skills. Your child will learn what items can be found in a first aid kit, how to make an arm sling and lots more!

For a small monthly gift of £9, your child will be sent fun and engaging activity packs, colouring pages and stickers over the course of six months (some by post, other via email). All the activities are designed to be completed in the comfort of your own home and at your child’s own pace. At the end of those six months, your child will receive a cute cuddly toy of Bertie Badger along with a certificate to celebrate their achievement!

St Catherine’s Prep School, Bramley, is delighted to celebrate Maren Kelly, who has received the prestigious Primary Science Teaching Award in recognition of her outstanding teaching and dedication to inspiring young scientists. They are especially proud to be the only independent school to receive this honour this year. Maren now joins a distinguished network of more than 200 Primary Science Teacher College Fellows across the UK. She has also been selected to represent the UK in a two-year international project led by Science on Stage Germany and supported by the GEA Foundation — one of just 20 teachers chosen from over 150 applicants across 26 countries. Speckled Dog Studio Opens

Speckled Dog Studio has recently opened at Smithbrook Kilns, near Cranleigh, offering a huge range of fun and creative activities. They offer regular Make & Create classes for primary-aged children to express their artistic side! Each session introduces new materials, ideas, and techniques while leaving plenty of room for imagination. These run as daytime home education sessions and after-school sessions for children aged 6-11. There are also ‘Mini Makers’ sessions for under 5s and their parents. They have monthly pottery classes where children aged 7-15 can take part in a fun clay project each month. Giggleville Softplay

Giggleville Softplay is a children’s play café that provides a fun and stimulating environment for children aged 0-7. Brick Explorers at RHS Garden Wisley

This summer, embark on a family adventure at RHS Garden Wisley with Brick Explorers – a spectacular celebration of wildlife, creativity and discovery. From 11 July to 31 August 2026, come and explore the garden and uncover incredible brick-built wildlife sculptures inspired by the plants, animals and fungi that call our gardens home. Created by Surrey-based Iconic Bricks, these stunning sculptures form part of an exciting wildlife superhero mission trail designed to inspire young nature lovers. Children can collect wildlife superpowers, match stickers in their trail booklet and discover how plants, animals and fungi work together in a thriving web of life. Along the way, they’ll learn simple ways they can support wildlife in their own gardens and communities. There are also plenty of opportunities to get creative. Take part in hands-on brick-building activities and visit the interactive build station, where you can help transform a brick city by adding nature-inspired creations and bringing more greenery into the urban landscape. Summer fun at local libraries

Children are invited to take part in The Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge 2026: Read to the Beat. It launches in Surrey on Sat 4 July and in Hampshire on Sat 11 July. Delivered by public libraries, the Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to enjoy reading for pleasure over the summer holidays. This year’s theme inspires children to explore the connection between stories and songs, discovering how they both ignite imagination and creativity. Children are encouraged to read up to six books, or complete six goals, with rewards and a certificate celebrating their achievements. Sign up at your local library! Fresh ways to prepare kids for September

Whether your child is starting school for the very first time or moving somewhere new, preparation isn’t about getting everything perfect, it’s about helping them feel secure. Advice about uniforms, routines and packed lunches is familiar; however, there are some less obvious ways parents can help their children feel ready for change.

Starting school for the first time

Practise ‘micro-independence’

Rather than focusing only on big milestones like using the toilet or writing their name, build independence in small, everyday ways. Encourage your child to open snack packets, put on their own coat or ask for help from another adult. These tiny victories make a big difference in a classroom.

Talk about feelings in advance (not just fun)

Instead of only emphasising excitement, gently introduce the idea that it’s okay to feel nervous, shy or even a bit cross. Giving children language for these emotions helps them cope when they arise.

Create a ‘goodbye ritual’

Ritual can be a powerful tool in helping children feel secure at the start of the day. A predictable routine such as a special phrase, a quick hug, a high-five or a wave at the window helps create a clear and reassuring transition between home and school. The key is consistency, so your child can rely on it. Over time, this small moment of connection builds emotional security and can significantly reduce separation anxiety.

Build stamina for the school day

School is tiring. In the weeks before term, gradually introduce longer periods of activity followed by rest, mirroring the rhythm of a school day. This helps avoid overwhelm in those first few weeks.

Use stories to rehearse scenarios

Use books and role play games to explore situations like making friends, asking to go to the toilet or what happens if something goes wrong. Children absorb these scripts naturally through play.

Starting a new school year

Even when children are returning to the same school there are the challenges of new teachers, classrooms, subjects and friendships to be faced. Help them settle back in smoothly:

Reset routines gradually

Don’t wait until the night before term starts. Begin adjusting bedtimes, mealtimes and morning routines at least a week in advance.

Reflect before you reset

Have a chat about last year - what they enjoyed, what they found tricky and what they’re hoping for this year. This helps children feel heard and more in control.

Small refreshes

A small ‘back-to-school refresh’ - like a new pencil case or reorganised workspace - can feel motivating.

Normalise wobbles

Even confident children can feel unsettled at the start of term. Remind them that it’s normal to need time to adjust, especially with new teachers or classmates.

Reconnect socially

If possible, arrange a meet-up with friends before school starts. Getting back in the groove with friends can make all the difference to day one.

Moving to a new school Focus on continuity

Help your child identify what will stay the same - their interests, favourite hobbies, family routines. This reinforces the idea that school is just one part of their life, making the transition feel less like a complete upheaval.

Make the unfamiliar feel familiar

Walk or drive the route to school as practice and look at photos of it online. Even small details like knowing where the toilets are can reduce first-day anxiety. It’s tempting to tell children everything at once but too much detail can
