Bossing your bins: Five easy ways to avoid wish-cycling
It’s tempting to recycle everything in sight. So, it’s no surprise that at least one unrecyclable item a week per household accidentally goes into the recycling bin – known as ‘wish-cycling’. Wish-cycling is a big deal because a whole truckload of recycling could be rejected at the recycling facility if it contains items that can’t be recycled. It’s very expensive for local councils to sort out, negatively affects Surrey’s recycling rate and is damaging for the environment. But the good news is that you can easily ‘own your impact’ and do your bit for the planet with these five quick wins for your bins. 1. If in doubt, check it out - some items look recyclable but aren’t, even if the label says so. Visit www.surreyep.org.uk/whatto-do-with-an-item or download the free Surrey Recycles app to always ‘know before you throw.’ 2. Check what you can recycle separately - food and garden waste, small electricals, batteries and textiles recycling are collected separately in most areas of Surrey - they don’t go in your recycling bin. 3. Keep it clean and dry - no food or drink as moisture and grease will ruin cardboard and paper and make it unrecyclable. Empty, rinse and dry food and drink packaging. 4. Refresh your knowledge - play the fun drag and drop waste sorting game to find out more (at surreyep.recycle.game). 5. Loosen up - place all items loose, not in bags or bin liners. 2022 Summer Reading Challenge
The Summer Reading Challenge launches in libraries on Saturday 9 July. Aimed at children aged 4-11, it allows them to set their own goal of reading up to six books over the summer holidays with regular rewards to keep them engaged. The theme is ‘Gadgeteers’, inspiring children to discover the amazing science and innovation in the world around them. This year, Surrey Libraries are part of a pilot scheme working closely with 14 schools to ensure every child has the opportunity to receive a library card, take part in the Summer Reading Challenge, and continue their reading journey. Summer holiday fun at Elm Nursery
Visit Elm Nursery this Summer! The children’s farm is open 10am-3.30pm daily (last admission 3pm) and is ideal for pre-school/KS1. Animal food is £1 per bag. Lil Ninjas sessions for 4-6 year olds run all year round including during the Summer holidays. Summer lunches and picnics Hands up who’s hungry?
From a mum who knows, here are three crowd-pleasing recipes you can make with the kids this summer that will grab their attention, teach them some skills, taste great and be perfect for easy summer lunches or a picnic.
Rainbow pizza
Pesto cheese twists
A fun and healthy meal to cook with children, this recipe teaches basic kitchen skills and includes lots of vegetables. Using a ready-made pizza base makes this super easy for even the youngest chefs.
These twists are a doddle to prepare and so delicious. A perfect kitchen activity for little ones to learn basic cutting and pastry twists. Great for on-the-go snacks.
You will need:
Ready puff pastry Pesto Cheddar and Parmesan cheese (finely grated) Egg (whisked)
Ready-made pizza base Passata Grated mozzarella Rainbow vegetables, chopped up Olive oil
Step 1
Start by spreading a layer of passata on the base and adding the grated mozzarella cheese.
Step 2
Arrange the chopped vegetables as a rainbow. I have used cherry tomatoes, yellow peppers, sweetcorn, grated carrot, broccoli and red onion.
Step 3
Drizzle with olive oil.
Step 4
Bake in a hot oven at 180c for fifteen to twenty minutes.
You will need:

Lay the puff pastry on a floured surface and spoon and spread pesto on half the sheet. Sprinkle the cheese on top of the pesto.

Egg and pea cheesy waffles This three-ingredient recipe couldn’t be any easier and it’s perfect for little hands. You can switch up the vegetable or even use a frozen veg mix if you prefer. So good for picnics or lunch in the garden.
You will need: 2 eggs (whisked) A handful of frozen peas (cooked) A handful of cheese
Step 1
Whisk the eggs until light and fluffy.
Step 2
Fold the puff pastry over. Use a rolling pin to lightly roll to seal the pastry.
Add the peas and cheese and mix with a spoon. Season with salt and pepper (optional).

Slice 2cm strips. Twist each strip and place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Press the edges.
Step 4
Egg-wash the puff pastry twist and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Pour into a hot greased waffle iron and evenly spread out the peas with a spoon. (If you don’t have a waffle maker you can bake these in a muffin tray in the oven).

Cook, slice and serve!
Bake for fifteen minutes at 180c until golden. Let cool and enjoy!

Battling it out in the saddle and on foot in one-to-one combat, the valiant knights will then compete for points to find this season’s ultimate champion. Join Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and the Knights of Royal England in the procession to the Jousting arena. Bring a blanket or watch the joust in style from the medieval spectator stands. The Southeast Communities Rail Partnership (SCRP) will be running a free* Treasure Hunt on a Train on the North Downs Railway Line between Saturday 23rd July and Sunday 4th September 2022. The North Downs Railway Line runs between Reading, via Guildford, to Redhill.

Keeping learning fun over the summer holiday By Naomi Bartholomew, Headmistress, St Catherine’s Prep School, Bramley
T
he long summer break can seem like a daunting prospect for parents of bright, active children. It is important for children whether they are already at school or pre-school to have some ‘down-time’ and dare I say even to get bored occasionally as it is in this space that they will be able to become creative and resourceful. Those starting at nursery or school will need to be waiting their turn and able to share adult attention come September so having time when they have to occupy themselves is useful preparation. As is the chance to get dressed independently, be confident to go to the toilet and wash hands, be brave with trying a variety of foods and making choices and seeing those through. Some of these seemingly simpler, smaller activities can really help children learn and develop ready for their next steps.
Help make learning fun! My top tips would be to: Get Outdoors
Everything from a very simple picnic in the garden or local park to building a ‘bug hotel’ out of sticks and leaves are great activities for young children. Observing nature and collecting interesting leaves and petals can be hours of fun allowing children to explore and let their imagination run wild! Creating a museum of objects in a shoe box of all the items found can also be a wonderful way for young children to look carefully at small objects which for them are fascinating. Another simple activity is to wrap sticky tape around your child’s wrist and have them make a ‘nature bracelet’ out of any small and interesting items they find – feathers, leaves and bark works really well. The most important thing is to foster your child’s natural curiosity and encourage them to be really looking closely and observing what is in their very immediate surroundings.
Be Creative
Children love to raid the recycling bin so allow them to be creative and also help the planet at the same time by making use of items that would otherwise be thrown away. Items can be transformed with paint, used as printing blocks or modelled and built into towers using PVA glue. Allow your child to create for themselves and if they are needing help use a picture book to find ideas and suggest things that they might like to model. A den can be easily created from laundry baskets indoors or old sheets and blankets. Anything which transforms one thing into another is fostering creativity and building on imaginative thought.

Undertake every day chores
Everything from setting the table, washing up, sorting laundry into light and dark items or simple kitchen tasks such as shelling peas can create brilliant learning opportunities. Simple measuring for baking or decanting food into jars, tubs and containers for storing or freezing are all useful. Patience is needed as tasks can take longer than they might otherwise with young helpers but these are all golden opportunities for small amounts of responsibility and learning along the way.
Don’t forget number and basic maths
Research shows that maths learning takes the greatest step backwards over the summer break and hence it is very important to continue with counting and sorting whenever possible. A number line on the washing line can be helpful for pre-school and simple sums such as working out change or revising times tables are important for those already at school.
Reading
Visit your local library and read, read, read with and to your child. If they are reading themselves, listen whenever you can and encourage younger ones to hold and look through picture books talking about what they can see even if they are making up their own bespoke story. There are numerous sources of activity ideas but keeping things simple and close to home can be a very useful mantra for the long summer break. You do not need to compete with the fully kitted out nursery or superb facilities at school. Instead using simple activities at home can be as fun and fulfilling and benefit learning. A love of performing can develop key skills for life Whether it be diving into their dressing up box or stepping onto the stage, performing is important to children and young people, and the benefits of this can often go unnoticed. Performing arts can teach children and young people key skills that can be used in everyday life.
Creativity Children are naturally imaginative, and pretend play and make believe comes easily to them. Imaginative play can enable a child’s social and emotional development, helping them to form new ideas and develop resourcefulness.
Problem solving The ability to solve problems creatively within the safety of a performing arts environment can be transferred to everyday life when dealing with a variety of issues. If children feel comfortable exploring and dealing with problems in a non-linear way, this makes them more confident overall.
Empathy Performance is a classic form of storytelling, not only for entertainment but for sharing tales and ideas. Performing in character can help children appreciate another person’s point of view. To accurately portray a character, we need to be able to step into their shoes, understand their situation and what has brought them to that situation. If a child understands a character in this way, they can apply this to everyday life, helping them to react to friends and adults and develop their social skills.

Listening The ability to listen is an important skill, especially when a child is in a new setting with new routines and expectations. During performing arts classes children take direction from their teachers and peers. This encourages them to be receptive to others’ ideas and work collaboratively.
Confidence Building Some children are never happier than putting on a show for their family and friends, but for some standing up in front an audience can be daunting. Performing arts are hugely beneficial to children’s confidence levels. Learning new skills, rehearsing, and performing in a safe space, with the support of expert teachers and encouragement of their peers, can prepare children to deal with situations in which they feel anxious. At PQA we believe that our three core modules, Musical Theatre, Comedy & Drama and Film & Television, offer our students the very best mix of both performance based and technical training as well as providing them with skills for life to help them grow into well-rounded individuals.

In2Drama is back this year with Broadway and West End Star Kerry Ellis at the Cranleigh Arts Centre. (Cats, Wicked, We will Rock You, Les Miserables). She will be running audition Master Classes at the five-day academy which runs from 25th-29th July, 9am-5pm. The academy suits aspiring actors and filmmakers. The focus is on developing skills for musical theatre, film, acting, piano, dance and tech. Age related groups of 11-15 and 16-21 allows for better 1:1 focus.
