News and Views Land Of The Tiger Opens

Highest Commendation For ISL UK Schools

On May 5th, Land of the Tiger opened at Chessington World of Adventures. It is home to four new endangered Amur tigers – Tsar, Kyra, Olga and Kalinka – who are thriving following their arrival from Sweden earlier in the year.

ISL Surrey Primary School, Woking and The International School of London were delighted to be awarded the ‘Highest Commendation Award’ in the category of ‘School Offering Outstanding Support’ at the prestigious Relocate Awards 2018. ISL Surrey Primary School won the award for ‘Excellence in Family and Employee Support’ in 2013 and is being recognised again this year.

Why Do Babies Move In The Womb?

New Adult Ballet Class In Haslemere!

According to a new study, scientists at Trinity College Dublin have found that babies move around so much in the womb because they are trying to develop strong bones and joints.

Red Shoes School of Dance are delighted to be launching their new Adult Ballet Classes as part of their regular termly timetable. Jane Lubach, Principal of Red Shoes explains that the classes have been set up due to popular demand by parents. So if the idea of re-kindling your own childhood dance experiences excites you, grab your ballet shoes and trackies and come along to try the class (free trial!) and join the ever growing dance community at their school.

By analysing chicken and mouse embryos, the researchers determined that movement helps stimulate “molecular interactions” that ultimately turn cells and tissues of an embryo into functional bones and joints. The research also revealed that if babies don’t move often enough in utero, they may suffer from brittle bones or abnormal joint development. Just like all humans, babies need their joints to be covered in “smooth, lubricated” cartilage so they can bend properly. Researchers at Imperial College London have revealed that the force produced by foetal kicking at 20 to 35 weeks can reach 10lbs, twice that which it takes to hit a tennis ball at a speed greater than 100mph! Limit Children’s Snacks to 100 calories Twice a Day Parents have been advised by health officials to restrict children to only two snacks of 100 calories or less per day to reduce sugar intake between meals. Recent research has found that half of children’s sugar intake is being consumed between meals. On average, children are consuming at least 3 unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks a day, with around a third of children consuming 4 or more. The overall result is that children consume 3 times more sugar than is recommended. The ‘100 calorie snacks, two a day max’ tip applies to all snacks apart from fruit and vegetables.

Voices in the Middle Sadly, 1 in 3 children in the UK will see their parents split up before they reach their 16th birthday. Voices in the Middle is a charity that is raising awareness of the impact of divorce and separation on young people in the UK. This includes providing a place for young people to find help and ways to share their voice, without being put in the middle of any arguments. At the centre of this support, a new digital platform has been launched, https://www.voicesinthemiddle.com/, a dedicated place where young people can find help and support, voice their views and share their experiences, read helpful content and connect with discussion boards, helplines and local services. It is a collaboration between young people, the family law and mediation sector and The Family Initiative charity.

Explore Learning

How to seize the summer with Explore Learning The summer holidays are a great time for families to spend time together. However, it can also be a time when children forget some of the skills they have mastered at school. Miss Evans, a year 6 teacher, stated “Teachers often find that children begin the new school year having forgotten key skills. It is important that children have opportunities over the summer break to continue to develop their abilities.” Here are some ideas from Charlotte Gater, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning, on how to seize the summer.

Start a blog

Give your child a little note book to jots ideas down whilst you are out and about, then write up what you’ve done. Take lots of pictures as these are a great tool to help children who find writing tricky. Encourage them to describe what is happening in the picture to get their creativity flowing.

To keep your children progressing over the summer, a tuition centre is a great option. Prevent the battle ground of getting children to do work at home and get them along to a tuition centre where there are lots of other children getting involved. Send a postcard Let your friends and family know what you’ve been up to. They’re only short so are a wonderful way to get a bit of writing going during the holidays. Under 5s Summer Fun many baby and toddler groups and children’s activity classes take a break over the summer, so we have found some great activities for the under 5s that are running over the summer holidays for you to enjoy. Children’s Centres Children’s Centres are a fantastic resource for parents with under 5s - and there is lots going on in the summer holidays! Here is what is running at some of our local Children’s Centres. If yours isn’t listed or if it is listed and you’d like more details just give them a call! Activities are either free or there is a small charge. At The Spinney Children’s Centre, Play & Learn (for 0-5 years) will be running on Thursdays 9-10.30am and 1.30-3pm during the summer holidays (except 16th August when there is a trip to Tilgate Park). Prewalkers (birth-walking) runs every Friday in the holidays from 10-11.30am. Play & Learn and prewalkers are drop in, based on a first come first served basis and are free. There are also trips, music sessions and crafts during the summer holidays - call 01483 510570 for more information. Boxgrove Children’s Centre will be running various craft and play activities throughout the summer holidays for parents and children aged 0-5 years. To help keep Under 5’s moving, Arena Leisure Centre offer ‘Active Play and Bounce’ sessions. There’s no need to book you can just pop down, pay and play. Sessions takes place on Mondays 9.30-11am and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30-10.30am and 10.30-11.30am. For just £3.85 your child can enjoy the bouncy castle and soft play whilst parents enjoy a nice hot drink and perhaps a little treat from the café with a friend using the buy one get one free hot drink voucher (obtained from reception upon payment). For busy parents the Arena also offers a crèche which is open to everyone using the centre. The crèche team are all DBS checked and NVQ qualified in Childcare & Education. RHS Wisley is a beautiful garden with lots to interest children and plenty of space to burn off energy! From 21 July - 2 September take a step back in time with Jurassic Discovery and unearth the secrets of the land that time forgot. Plants were vital to the survival of the dinosaurs most commonly associated with this age. Visitors will be able to discover the descendants of some of those early plants with the familyfriendly activities. Children will love the Jurassic-themed activities, where willow and metal RHS Wisley dinosaur sculptures will help set the scene for their very own prehistoric detective adventure featuring a ‘fossil’ dig and a Jurassic discovery trail. Happy holidays at Hollycombe – a great value ticket to last you all summer long – and beyond! Hollycombe Working Steam Museum on the Hampshire and Surrey border offers a true ‘three generations’ visit, with a traditional fairground, train rides, working steam engines and woodland walks. Located next to The Electric Theatre, Onslow Street, Guildford’s urban beach is free to enter and open daily from 10am to 6pm on 16 to 18 August.
