It's easy to recycle your plastics Did you know you can recycle all your plastic pots, tubs and trays? That includes yoghurt pots, fruit punnets, moisturiser tubs and meat trays. Over half of all plastic pots, tubs and trays that could have been recycled are thrown away in Surrey every year, that’s almost 4,000 tonnes. Your recycled plastics could be turned into new furniture, children’s toys, paint pots and even football shirts. Mike Goodman, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Planning, said “It’s easy to recycle your plastics in Surrey, and together we could save nearly £300,000 a year if all the plastic pots, tubs and trays that are currently thrown away were recycled instead.”

News Charity Xmas Cards Pioneering charity Brain Tumour Research has taken an innovative approach to their range of Christmas cards this year, signing up supporter and artist Caroline Copland to design a new card for 2017. Caroline, who sadly lost her mother Janet to a brain tumour three years ago, was inspired by the Christmas Hope Trees which decorate the charity’s Research Centres of Excellence across the UK each year. The Hope Tree cards will join other festive favourites in the charity’s range. All cards are priced at £4 per pack of ten, with at least 60% of the proceeds going towards supporting vital brain tumour research. Brain Tumour Research is the only national charity in the UK focused on funding sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours, which kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Secure your family’s future The annual Will Aid scheme takes place across the UK from 1-30 November supporting the lifechanging work of ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children, Sightsavers, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (N. Ireland). Law firms across the country have signed up to pledge a portion of their time to write basic wills, waiving their normal fee, and instead asking clients to make a voluntary donation to Will Aid. Donations support the vital work of the nine partner charities. The scheme has raised more than £19 million for these charities since it launched in 1988.
New Soft Play at Meadowbank Visitors to Meadowbank park in Dorking recently might have noticed that the building work for the new Dorking Wanderers football ground is nearing completion and signs for a new café and soft play centre have gone up. The new facilities – funded by Mole Valley District Council and Sport England - will complete the latest phase of the Meadowbank regeneration and also brings an indoor play facility and much needed amenities to the park, including toilets and cafe. Let’s Skate! Reigate on Ice
The annual Reigate on Ice extravaganza returns to Priory Park this Christmas – launching 30th Nov and running to 3rd Jan 2018. As well as the ‘real’ ice rink, there will be a new Christmas Market running all season, entertainment and visits from favourite children’s tv characters. The traditional carousel will return, along with other favourite fairground rides - and this year you can even book some Facetime or a Santa Call from the jolly man himself! Grotto visits cost between £7-10. The smallest skate size is a kid’s 8, and mini skaters can use the penguins to help them stay on their feet. Sessions last 45mins and cost £9 for children and £12 for adults (family tickets are available). Non-skaters can keep warm in the new heated area and enjoy a hot choccy from one of the food & drink stalls. Join the party on Sat 2nd December at approx. 6.30pm for fireworks, following a day of festivities in Reigate including Santa landing by helicopter in Priory Park and the Christmas fayre in the town centre (see What’s On for details). Last year’s display was spectacular – don’t miss it!

Where’s Santa?
There are also Victorian train rides on Dec 21st, between Sheffield Park and Horsted Keynes station. Travel in a Victorian carriage to a station sparkling with the bright lights, fairground stalls and the sounds of a vintage organ. Father Christmas will be in his parlour with a gift for every child. A Christmas visit to the Bluebell Railway is a magical experience. Enjoy a journey through the Sussex countryside, in all its winter splendor, with Santa on board handing out presents and chocolate treats. Travel from Sheffield Park or East Grinstead to Horsted Keynes, where you’ll find a Victorian fairground and a Christmas pantry on platform 3. There’s a special Elf House for little ones and a chance to meet the reindeer and have photos taken with Santa. The experience last around 90 minutes.
Come and see Father Christmas arrive at Hans Christmas Andersen’s Tree Farm on Sat 2nd Dec at midday, all welcome. Visit Santa in his grotto (£3 per child) with all proceeds going to local charities, no booking required and all children get a present. There is also a special Santa letter box where you can post a letter to Father Christmas. Ride the Barrel Train through the plantation and past the reindeer, free of charge, or enjoy a heavy horse and carriage ride, with no age

The Witch’s Broomstick – a gnarly old Beech tree in Arbinger Roughs was one of the trees shortlisted in the Tree of the Year comp, run by the Woodland Trust. This fantastic specimen has twisted branches and what-looks-like a human skull shape in its 9m wide girth. It is anticipated to be 2-300 years old and has played host to hundreds of happy kids over the years. Why not go and seek it out? New Primary School in Redhill Everychild Trust, the academy trust that also run Sandross Primary School in Reigate, is opening a brand new Free school on the Reigate/Redhill borders in Sept 2018.
