Win free car parking at the Belfry Work is underway to give the Belfry Shopping Centre car park in Redhill a £2m facelift. The car park will remain open throughout the 6-month refurbishment. The Belfry is giving away hundreds of free car parking tickets throughout the improvement works. If you see a ‘WINNER’ stamp on your entry ticket, redeem it at the Centre Management Office to receive free parking that day. The project will increase the number of wider disabled and parent and child parking bays and electric vehicle charging points will be introduced. There will be new lighting, surfacing and internal ceilings, the car park will be redecorated and the parking bays re-marked to improve traffic flow. News What to do with Teens? Families is generally a magazine for families with 0-12 year olds, but I’ve heard quite a lot of chat recently about support and holiday clubs for older kids and teens. Where can you go for support/advice?
Save the Children’s Centres! It is almost 3 years since I last wrote about the threatened closures of children’s centres across the Surrey (and indeed the UK), and last time – thankfully they got a reprieve. So, it is with great frustration that I am again putting this top of my news agenda. Many of our local children’s centres are at risk of being closure due to funding cuts affecting Surrey County Council. SCC is just one of dozens of councils across the country being faced with huge budgets cuts, and are faced with a £100m budget deficit – which will mean less funding for education, children’s services and emergency services. Every parent knows how vital these local services are – from breastfeeding support, to speech development, parenting advice to help in completing forms for benefits & employment. There isn’t a parent locally who hasn’t used Sure Start centres for weighing their baby, weaning advice or to pop in for a coffee when they’re feeling a bit low. These centres play a vital role in supporting our local families, so please voice your concerns! Your local children’s centre will have a survey or petition up and running, so please jump online and submit your views and support for your local centre (or write a letter!) – it will make a difference.
Recycle clothes & home textiles The lead-up to summer is when many of us refresh our wardrobes and replace old clothes and home textiles. But don’t throw out the towel or banish your boots just yet; recycle them and help save money and the environment. Simply put clean and dry clothes and textiles in a standard-sized, tied carrier bag and visit recycleforsurrey.org.uk or download the Recycle for Surrey app to find out how to recycle where you live.

Well, your local children’s centre (see left!) can offer advice for teens, as well as younger children, but The Nest in Redhill has recently set up a Mums of Pre-Teens & Teens Support Group, as a safe space to chat through the challenges and help each other with specific teenage problems. And what about teen holiday activities? With many holiday clubs stopping at age 12, it’s a challenge to fill the holidays for working parents. It’s worth knowing that Better leisure centres (which include Donyngs and Tadworth) offer junior membership for £15 a month. This gets them access to the gym, pool and one racquet court session a day – a brilliant way to keep fit and stay out of mischief over the Summer! Dorking Sports Centre runs supervised gym sessions for 11-15 year olds several times a day from £3.55 session. Momentum Parkour in Dorking & Leatherhead also run sessions for ages 12+ - check them out at www.momentumparkour.co.uk Many areas in Surrey have a weekly collection for clothes and home textiles while everyone can use recycling banks at community recycling centres or at locations like car parks and supermarkets. All clothes and home textiles including towels, sheets, pairs of shoes, bags and socks can be recycled. Babies & Toddlers diddi dance Party! 2018 marks 15 years since diddi dance, the much-loved national dance classes for little ones, launched its first class in London. To celebrate, diddi dancers & their friends are invited to don their best party attire and attend special party themed dance classes filled with dancing props, games, balloons and bubbles! Between 4-10th June the regular 45-minute class structure will transform into a special birthday party theme that will be the talk of the tots! diddi dancers old and new are welcome to attend any of the special parties. Classes are designed to build confidence, coordination, rhythm, fitness, gross motor skills and social skills, welcoming all little ones from the age of 16 months up to five years. The weekly 45-minute sessions cover a variety of dance styles, from hip hop to country through to salsa and rock and roll so every child’s taste is catered for. Bookings are taken in half term blocks and toddlers can have a free trial before signing up.
‘Grannannying’ is the Word The trend of grandparents providing vital, day-to-day support to their grandchildren known as ‘grannannying’ is more widespread than you may have thought according to a new YouGov poll for Age UK. 40% of the nation’s grandparents over the age of 50 (that’s 5 million!) have provided regular childcare for their grandchildren, according to the survey. The vast majority did so once a week but a fifth provided support 4 to 6 times a week. Over half of grandparents said their help had enabled their own child/children to work more to support their family. But it’s not all one way. Nearly all grandparents (88%) said they enjoyed time spent with their grandchildren and half felt it kept them physical and mentally active. www.ageuk.co.uk

Time for You Post-natal checks – it’s never too late!
Pregnancy and childbirth, as amazing as it is, puts a huge strain on our bodies. It can cause us to move differently, for joints to be weaker and for tummy and/or pelvic floor muscles to become stretched and weakened, sometimes leading to poor core control and dysfunction. Sadly, there is a culture and expectation in the UK that urinary incontinence, prolapse, diastasis (tummy gap) and pain with intercourse is just a normal byproduct of childbirth and we should live with it! Wildlife special We all know the UK is a nation of animal lovers – and what better time to celebrate our amazing wildlife than in the Spring? Families Surrey East takes-a-look at some local organisations and attractions, working hard to bring nature to the forefront, and protect and conserve it for future generations.
Surrey Wildlife Trust goes Wild! The Surrey Wildlife Trust is an amazing charity that educates, campaigns for and conserves our areas of natural beauty and the creatures that inhabit them. They currently run 82 sites, covering almost 8,000ha (which is 5% of the land area of the county!). They work closely with local partners and landowners to advise on land management for conservation, with particular emphasis on woodland, wetlands, and heathland. The SWT have loads of great initiatives, including holidays camps, family open days and workshops, but their #30DaysWild program is one of the most popular. Do your children love going wild outdoors? Last year almost 7,000 people in Surrey and 50,000 nationally took part in the initiative and research showed that there was a 30 per cent increase in the number of people reporting their health as excellent – and their happiness continued to improve!
Local family favourite Godstone Farm, which has been established for over 30 years, has a great range of birthday packages – with one of the most special being the Farmer Experience. This 2-hour session can be held for 1-3 children and really gives kids the chance to go behindthe-scenes at the farm attraction. From animal care to feeding, grooming the ponies to collecting eggs, children can learn the basics behind farm life. There’s also plenty of animal handling, from the bunnies to reptiles, and a tractor ride around the grounds. Wildlife special Go Native at the British Wildlife Centre The British Wildlife Centre, in the heart of the East Surrey countryside, is a great day out for all ages and a real natural history experience. It’s home to the finest collection of native species in the country, where you will see and learn about Britain’s own wonderful wildlife; rarely seen species such as otters, Scottish wildcats and pine martens, as well as foxes, badgers and beautiful free-flying British owls. The Centre also boasts the UK’s first Walk-through Red Squirrel Enclosure. For the Centre’s team of dedicated keepers, animal welfare is top priority and they share a close bond with the animals in their charge. The role is very varied, from feeding the different species with tailored, specially designed diets, through to landscaping enclosures, ensuring they reflect natural wild habitats and provide enrichment and interest for all the animal residents. Other duties include taking care of new animal arrivals and in some cases hand-rearing orphaned youngsters that have been brought into the Centre (a round-the-clock job, that involves taking the chick, cub or kitten home at night!). As well as all this, they must be highly knowledgeable and comfortable with public speaking. During the week, the keepers give talks to many large school groups and on open dates they give half hourly talks to visitors, enabling people to view animals up close and learn all about the challenges that Britain’s native species face in the wild. A Day in the Life at Bocketts Farm Life as a farmer brings lots of variety and no two days ever the same. The morning rounds begin at 8am, with checking and feeding the animals the main priority. With over 300 sheep, 40 cows, 20 pigs, goats, llamas, horses and chickens to name but a few, this can take several hours and a whole team of people. In the summer months when you’re lucky enough to have dry weather and glorious sunshine, the wet and muddy winter months seem like a distant memory! With the goats milked, pens mucked out, eggs collected, and horses groomed, the days are filled with a variety of jobs to be done. During the early summer months, usually in June, they shear the sheep ready for the warm weather. They also have to cut the grass and make hay whenever the weather allows, enabling them to build up a big store of food for the animals for the winter months. The Kitchen Garden grows an abundance of lovely fruit and vegetables at this time of year too, much of which is picked and used in the Old Barn Tearooms.

The next time your child falls, take the chance to talk to them about gravity and discuss why they fell downwards rather than upwards! If they’ve grazed their knees, once the tears have stopped, chat a bit about biology – why is blood red, why do scabs form, how do cuts heal? If you don’t know the answers yourself, call on Doctor Google – he’s always there to help.
It’s not easy being a parent. You want to do the best for your children, but sometimes it’s hard to work out what the best actually is. Education is one of those areas where advice is constantly changing. If you are interested in helping your kids with the fundamentals of education there is an acronym which you should become aware of: STEM. It stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and it is fast becoming the core of the British and global education system. There is hardly a career which does not involve some element of STEM, from farming to neurosurgery, and it also plays a part in a many everyday activities. This is why it’s important our children can understand its key tenets. I have always believed that learning should be fun and the popular perception is that the subjects of STEM are anything but. However, science, engineering and technology are particularly well-suited to play and mathematics can be applied to virtually any day-today situation. It’s just a matter of identifying the right opportunities. The next time you’re baking pastry together, let your child measure out the ingredients and ask them questions: what does ‘half fat to flour’ mean? Let them work out, according to that rule, how much flour is needed if you’re using 100 grams of fat. Get them to count out how many pastry cases were made from that ratio, then work out how much more pastry it would take to As a parent, what double the number of cases, can you do to help or how many pies each family member will get based on the form the STEM current number. Talk about of your child’s tree the ingredients, what they are of knowledge? and where they’ve come from.

When you’re out with your children, encourage scientific observations: when walking to the park, talk about why the leaves are green or why they fall in autumn. See if your children can spot any mini-beasts and set them the challenge of learning about them when they get home. And when at home, help bring out your child’s inner-engineer by encouraging them to put those endless MegaBlocks and LEGO bricks to work. While I’m not saying that all education should be done by stealth, I am an advocate of learning through play. The lessons I most strongly remember from my childhood are those that were learned while I was having fun: the Van de Graaff generator sparking as much imagination as electricity; the recreation of the witches’ scene in Macbeth making Shakespeare seem relevant and interesting; the days in the garden, learning where food actually comes from and that there is a point to worms. Children were born to learn and their brains are busy absorbing information from the second they leave the womb. If you can make your lessons fun, informal and an integral part of everyday life, then your little ones will learn by osmosis and you can sit back in the happy glow of a good job, well done. Nature Notes The Greatest Glasshouse in the World! The jewel in the crown of Kew Gardens, the Temperate House, reopens its doors on 5th May after a huge restoration project. The project has taken 400 staff and contractors 5 years to complete, with scaffolding the length of the entire M25 needed to remove and maintain over 69,000 elements! The refurbed glasshouse will now be home to over 10,000 species of plants from temperate climates around the world, and will be hosting regular aerial performances from Cirque Bijou on weekends and bank holidays, from 26th May to 2nd September. Club News Gymnastics for all Leatherhead & Dorking Gymnastics Club is a Centre of Excellence comprising three gymnastics halls. They are a Registered Charity, for all levels of gymnastics including Preschool from 18 months, recreational gymnastics including disabilities, elite artistic gymnastics for girls, boys and team gym. Gymnastics development is provided for all ages and abilities led by a team of dedicated qualified coaches. Recognition has been achieved at Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth levels by gymnasts, coaches and judges from the club. The club has also produced British and British Regional Champions. They also hold bespoke disabilities sessions for mainstream schools and other disability groups. The sessions are held in a safe and secure environment. The club is committed to training young gymnasts to develop coaching skills to qualify as coaches themselves, once they reach 16 years old. In 2017 they were awarded Mole Valley Sports Club of the Year and in 2018 two Mole Valley Youth Showcase Awards were given to a leading female gymnast for Sporting Achievement (who became English Champion in 2017), and to a disability gymnast who was awarded with The Outstanding Achievement Award. They run classes throughout the week, and is a great place for the whole family to keep fit and learn new skills. Drama, fun and dance at Perform Perform is a unique children’s drama school that has a special emphasis on child development. Perform uses a mix of drama, dance and singing to bring out every child’s full potential.
