News Free Sport for Kids! Reigate & Banstead Borough Council is offering local youngsters aged 7-15yrs old the opportunity to try out a range of sports – for FREE - with some participants being selected to represent the borough at the Specsaver Surrey Youth Games on 17-18th June. The event is a great chance to meet other youngsters and develop good sporting values and skills. Most programmes run until mid-June and include judo, boxing, badminton, netball and table tennis. There are also Boccia sessions for people with disabilities.
St Catherine’s Memory Meadow St Catherine's Hospice invites local residents to join them at the launch of their brand new Memory Meadow in Reigate's Priory Park on Sat 20th May at 11am. The non-religious celebration is open to everyone, regardless of whether their loved one was cared for by St Catherine's, and will include specially chosen readings and music. The Memory Meadow sits close to the lake at Priory Park, and has been designed by gardening experts, who've selected traditional English flowers that attract pretty wildlife like butterflies and bees. People can also add their loved one's name to an online dedication book and receive a pack of wildflower seeds to create a memory garden at home.

New Kids Counselling App
Join thousands of children across the country celebrating the benefits walking brings by taking part in Walk to School Week from 15-19th May.
The NSPCC’s Childline service has just launched a new iPhone app to provide counselling for kids directly through their mobile phones. The ‘For Me’ app allows kids to access Childline’s online services, including 1-2-1 live chats with a counsellor, the ‘Ask Sam’ problem pages and entrance to their private ‘lockers’ – areas where they can write down their own personal thoughts and track their moods.
We know that walking to school makes children feel healthier and happier, while reducing congestion and pollution outside the school gates. Yet less than half of primary school children currently walk to school. Living Streets, who organise the annual event want to reverse this decline and see every child that can, walk to school. It was invented by four teenagers who wanted to use technology to address the urgent need for support among young people. Childline founder Esther Rantzen said: “We know hundreds of thousands of young people use our website for help and support, with more than half those visits coming via mobile devices. Children’s Centres Focus on 0-11yr olds You might have used your local children’s centre to have your baby weighed, or when you needed advice on weaning or sleep training – but did you know that they now cater for families with kids up to age 11? Dover’s Green Children’s Centre in Reigate recently unveiled its new logo to reflect the changes to its remit, and had a great response from the local community. Part of the Surrey CC’s Early Help 0-19 offer, the increased age range means that families with older children that require extra support can access it more easily. Courses at local centres include Parenting Puzzle, behaviour advice and info on financial entitlements. You can find your local centre by visiting surreycc.gov.uk

Inner Art Opens in Reigate Families is very excited that a new art tuition studio has recently opened on our doorstep! Run by local artist, teacher and mum Katie Beth Hooper, the venue is on West Street and will host one-toone adult tuition, as well as kid’s classes. Katie has been teaching art for 15 years, in schools and other group settings and has been encouraged by the local response to her venture. One to one tuition can take place in the studio, at your home or on location, and can include painting drawing and lifedrawing techniques. Getting closer to nature and spending time as a family away from work and technology are great reasons to take a family camping trip. Now, a recent study has found that a weekend under canvas can help re-set your body clocks and improve sleeping habits too. If there’s one thing that bothers us parents more than stressing about how much time our children spend indoors using gadgets, it’s our own lack of sleep. So what’s stopping you dusting off that old sleeping bag and getting your pitch booked? If you’re still feeling tent-ative (!) here are a few pointers…
Snug as a bug in a rug… Re-setting your body clock is one thing, but you want to make sure you sleep well while you’re camping too. Keeping warm is key. • Make sure you are protected from the cold from the ground. Invest in a good quality thermal mat. • Go for bedding that works for you. If you don’t like sleeping bags, take your duvet. • Calories keep you warm. Eating something before you go to sleep can really help in warming you up and keeping you warm into the night.
Let there be light… Head torches are a great idea. Kids love them and they mean you can be hands-free for toilet trips, getting dressed, eating and

It’s almost inevitable that the good old British weather will throw a few raindrops your way, but snuggling inside with a pitter patter overhead is all part of the experience, and it’s not miserable if you go prepared. • Take a trilby, peak cap and/or umbrella • An extra gazebo for eating in and playing games can be a godsend in the rain and means that your sleeping tent won’t get trashed with muddy feet. • Take card games like UNO, pad & pens and some good story books. • Before you go, research where the local museums, cinemas and soft play are. • Go swimming. If you can’t beat it, join it – the beauty is you can use the showers and changing facilities to get clean and dry.

New Woodland Playtrail at Winkworth
Winkworth Arboretum National Trust property in Godalming has just opened a brand new nature-inspired play area. Designed by children of the 1st Farncombe Scout Group, the woodland play area is hidden amongst birch trees, without a plastic slide in sight! Styled as an extension of the natural environment, it features a chunky branch den and a staircase carved into a huge fallen oak trunk. Each feature is linked, combining a natural climbing frame, wobbly bridge, balance beam and rope bridge to form an adventure trail suitable for children of mixed ages and abilities. We’ve teamed up with the experts at Explore Learning to bring you seven awesome ways to make homework ACTUALLY fun.
1. Set up a fun and creative space
Having a special place to do work, decorated in personalised decor, can really help children to focus. Avoid busy areas and make sure there is no other distractions, like technology or televisions. Younger children may appreciate their own artwork hung on the walls, while older children may prefer more desk space and personalised planners, so they can organise their work.
2. Magical motivators
Keep homework battles at bay by using incentives to keep your child on track. Younger children may be motivated by sticker charts, where they can pick a reward once it is full, whilst older kids may be persuaded to crack on with their work with the promise of time on the iPad. Make sure your child understands the value of developing good homework habits, rather than just receiving a reward!
3. Find a study buddy
Hold a homework playdate where your child and one of their friends do their homework together. Set some rules ahead of time and reward them afterwards with an activity of their choice. Or join your child yourself and accomplish some work of your own – be it catching up on emails, paying bills or planning a holiday. Win-win!
4. Turn it into a game
Turn learning into a fun game. For spellings, you could use flashcards or writing words in foam, or for maths, you could use sweets like Smarties to help visualise numbers. When they get a right answer, they get to eat some!
5. Get outside
If the weather is good, why not let your child do their homework outside? The fresh air will help them concentrate after being inside a stuffy classroom all day. Let them have a short break in between exercises, like a game of Frisbee or football.
6. Be positive
Always be upbeat about school and homework and give your child bags of encouragement. Reinforce how well they are doing, write them inspiring messages and chat to family members about your child’s achievements.
7. Make it visual

Nutfield Judo Club, a successful Martial Arts Club located in Nutfield Village Hall, Mid Street, South Nutfield are holding a Free Introduction to Judo Course on Sunday 21st May from 10.30am to 12.00pm. Judo is a Japanese Martial Art and an Olympic Sport and is great for developing self-confidence, core fitness and strength and self-defence. The course is for children aged from 5 to 15 years and will cover how to fall safely, some basic Judo terms as well as an introduction to Judo Practice including some throws and hold downs. The Youth Hostelling charity YHA (England and Wales) is calling on people to volunteer at its popular week-long GoXtreme and Action Adventure residential Summer Camps, held during July and August.
Sundays 11.30am-1.25pm at Reigate College Sports Hall, Rushworth Road
As well as the opportunity to work with 10-16 year olds, YHA will provide training, food, accommodation and travelling expenses. This is a great opportunity for people considering a career working with young people to gain vital experience and boost their CV. The opportunity is open to anyone who is 18+ with previous experience working with children. They must be available to have a DBS check and be available for 1-2 weeks in July and August. Training course on the 14-15th July. YHA is a charity with a network of around 160 diverse hostels throughout England and Wales. The Summer camps give young people the chance to be independent, try outdoor experiences, grow in confidence and make new friends. Activities include rafting, canoeing, rock climbing, weaselling, archery and quad biking.
