Could Shared Parental Leave work for you? By Mandy Garner Shared Parental Leave (SPL) allows parents to share time off work during the first year after their child is born, with dads and mums both taking some of the leave, whilst being paid at a statutory rate. When Craig Curran and Sarah Farquharson looked into sharing the time off after their baby was born they couldn’t believe their luck. They both worked for Virgin Money which offered enhanced shared parental pay for parents on SPL – meaning they would receive a higher level of pay than the statutory rate. Sarah also earned more than Craig so it made better financial sense for Craig to share the leave with her. Even better, the couple were able to take a month of leave together – Sarah took the first five months of leave alone, the couple shared the sixth month and Craig took the last two months. The result for Craig and Sarah has been a closer family relationship and a greater sharing of parental responsibilities - with neither parent’s career suffering as a result. Sarah was promoted just after she found out she was pregnant whilst Craig returned from his leave to a promotion. “If anyone asks me about it, I say just do it. You never get that time again” says Craig. “I would 100% do it again.” Both Craig and Sarah report that their managers and colleagues were very supportive of their leave plans. However, that is not always the case. In its annual survey Workingmums.co.uk found that only 37% of respondents said they would consider taking SPL. The majority would not. Some of the reasons given were the negative impact on household finances, fears that the dad’s career would suffer and a lack of knowledge about SPL. Some 43% of respondents said they wouldn’t take SPL because it would not make sense financially but the majority of these said that even enhanced SPL pay wouldn’t make a difference to their decision. Clearly, the suggestion is that other non-financial factors are at play, such as the desire many women have to spend as much time as possible with their baby. 17% of mums said they didn’t want to share their leave. What SPL does is give parents greater choice over how they manage the care of their new born child and it can be an important building block in facilitating change in discriminatory working environments. However, take up remains very low nationally, possibly because the legislation is complex. HR managers are recommending that the language is simplified and that managers are given tools they need to implement SPL, as well as being able to give concrete case studies which show the many different ways in which SPL can be taken: in one chunk or in separate blocks over a period of time; overlapping with the mother for all or part of the leave and so forth. Being able to read about other parents’ experiences brings the whole process to life. Workingmums.co.uk have also collaborated with dad’s website daddilife.com on a series of videos highlighting the need for parents to have open conversations around Shared Parental Leave. One of the benefits of SPL is that dads who have taken it feel much more confident about being in sole charge of their children. They also have a greater sense of empathy about what looking after a baby involves, and there can also be a positive impact on mental wellbeing. familiesonline.co.uk
One dad who took SPL is John Birrell from the law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner. His wife went through a traumatic emergency C-section followed by hospitalisation for an infection. Having her husband to share the months after the birth meant she was not left on her own to recover from major surgery while doing the physically exhausting work of looking after a young child. “Mental health is too often ignored and post-natal depression must be one of the most common forms,” says John. Send Special The next few pages are dedicated to our readers who have family members with special educational needs and/or disabilities. We know from talking to local families that it is often challenging to find the support you need in education, childcare and entertainment for SEND children, so we hope the next couple of pages offers some useful help, advice and ideas.
Life with a child with Special Educational Needs
Parents are often faced with additional challenges when they have a child with special needs. Claire Winter talks to a parent about life with a child who has SEN. Caroline is mum to seven-year-old Alfie, who has autism. She says life with autism is like being on a constant rollercoaster, as no two days are the same. “Some days we’re on a level, and then the following day we might be hurtling down an enormous drop! Alfie is autistic, which as a spectrum disorder, affects people in completely different ways. Alfie’s main challenges include social and communication issues, anxiety, dyspraxia (problems with coordination and motor-functions), sensory issues, emotional under-development and shortterm memory problems. This means that even basic things, like asking him to put his shoes on or find his water bottle can be fraught with difficulties. Frankly, it’s exhausting at times! Some days are better than others. My measure is if we manage to get through the day without any major tantrums or without him hitting out at anyone, and he goes to sleep feeling loved and protected, then we’ve had a good day.”
“The nature of the condition being a spectrum disorder means that everyone experiences it differently. People often don’t realise Alfie has a condition, and then if we explain, we get comments like “well, he doesn’t look autistic.” For some reason, people feel qualified to comment on your child’s condition after only meeting them for five minutes! I have to continually explain to people that because he is classed as ‘high-functioning,’ i.e. he keeps up with his peers academically and has average verbal skills, it doesn’t mean that his life is any easier. In fact, in some ways it’s harder, because society expects him to be a certain way because he doesn’t have the indicators of what people perceive to be ‘disabled,’ such as a wheelchair or a full-time carer. I am always happy to talk about Alfie and his condition as part of a positive conversation around disability.”
“The problem with the current mainstream school system is that it is a ‘one size fits all’ approach, but schooling a child with SEN is like trying to stick a square peg into a round hole. In our experience, because Alfie keeps up academically with his peers and appears to ‘cope’ in school, he only gets a basic level of support with things like social skills and confidence building. I think Alfie could thrive at school if he had access to further support and if the school could fund a helper to sit with him. He is a bright and intelligent boy, but because they don’t address his specific needs, he will only perform at a mediocre level. Because Alfie just gets on with it out of sheer determination and a huge amount of self-control, he continually slips through the net. He is exhausted when he comes home from school from trying to ‘fit in,’ and that is when he is most likely to meltdown. But unfortunately, the school doesn’t get to see this behaviour. This is a major issue for many SEN parents, and a lot of us feel very let down by the system.” Caroline says Autism is often referred to as a ‘hidden disability, but it does depend on the child and their specific needs.

Caroline’s son is in a mainstream school, and she says that getting education and support for your child at school is a huge sticking point for many SEN parents.
What should you do if you suspect your child may have SEN or additional needs? Caroline says if your child is school age, your first port of call should always be their school, particularly if they haven’t flagged anything up to you already. If your child is younger talk to your health visitor or doctor. “Be able to give clear examples of how the issue is affecting your child and their ability to learn or function in a classroom setting, and how it may be affecting them at home. Keep notes if necessary. Issues at school can often manifest themselves at home through bad behaviour, withdrawing, general grumpiness, and not wanting to talk about school. Obviously, it depends on the challenges involved and the individual child, but if you suspect the issue is related to mental health, then they ought to be seen by a GP who can refer them on to the relevant services, although access to this varies depending on area and hospital trust. “Last of all – don’t give up! If we all keep shouting about it, eventually we will get heard!” familiesonline.co.uk

Early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder can mean parents don’t have to wait for their child to start school to implement intervention programs. Early autism intervention programmes can address the primary behavioural symptoms of autism in children from as young as 18 months of age and can have long term positive effects. Many children with autism appear to be developing typically until they start pre-school or kindergarten, when language and social delays stand out in contrast to the development of their peers.

These five signs of autism can be observed in children as young as 12 to 24 months of age. Your child does not look when you point at something. A child with autism may not look when you point at an object across the room and may not follow your gaze when you look at something. Your child does not point with one finger to request items or get help. A child with autism may not use gestures like pointing with one finger to ask for things or to direct your attention. Your child does not respond to his or her name. Children with autism may not understand the response you expect when you say their name, or they may not be motivated to respond in the same way as a typically developing child. Your child avoids looking you in the eye. A child with autism may find eye contact challenging or painful and may avoid looking you in the eye when you are talking to, playing with, or dressing him or her. Your child ignores you or does not seem to understand directions. A child with autism may have trouble understanding spoken language.

YMCA East Surrey provides play (Yippee age 5-11) and youth (Yip4Youth age 12-18) Short Breaks schemes for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. In December 2017, the local charity was awarded a threeyear contract to extend these schemes across East Surrey in Reigate & Banstead, Mole Valley, Epsom & Ewell and Tandridge, as well as Crawley in West Sussex. YMCA East Surrey’s qualified and experienced staff run Short Breaks schemes on Saturdays, throughout school holidays and Friday after school youth clubs. Lets Explore, the Horley soft play centre, has launched a new play session for Surrey and Sussex children with special educational needs and disabilities. Taking place on the first Tuesday of every month, from 4-6pm, the Lets Explore SEND sessions are exclusive to the children, their siblings and parents, guardians or carers. The tailored play sessions have a quiet ‘no music or tannoy’ policy and the centre also employs additional staff to help parents, and interact with children and their siblings. DO try this at home: Density Here’s simple way to demonstrate density, and the properties of different liquids to your children at home – using the kind of liquids that many households will already have in your kitchen cupboards. If you have the same amount, or volume, of two liquids - for example 100ml of honey and 100ml of water, the honey is denser and therefore weighs more. Using this principle, and a few other common household liquids, you can try something really cool. You’ll need: honey, washing up liquid, water (try putting food colouring in to make it really stand out), vegetable oil, a glass to pour them all in, and an adult to help you!
Step 1: Honey! Squeeze some honey into the bottom of your glass, making sure it doesn’t drip onto the sides of the glass!
Step 2: Washing up liquid. Squirt this on top of the honey
– again without touching the sides of the glass. See how it settles on top of the honey? That’s because it is more dense! If it mixes up a bit, just leave it to settle for a few minutes before…

Step 3: Water. We’re going to add this a little differently
this time though – instead of carefully avoiding touching the sides of the glass, with the water it works best if you pour it carefully down the side of the glass. Again leave it to settle until you have clear layers if you need to.

Easter Researchers have found that the brain activity that occurs when we read fiction is very similar to experiencing that situation in real life, so reading about a situation helps children work out how to solve it in the real world. And stories even affect a child’s social behavior.
Tell Me a Story By Jon Millington We all know that learning to read is important. Research shows that people without good literacy skills struggle in education and are more likely to be unemployed or even suffer from health and relationship problems. But developing literacy skills is about much more than reading words on paper: it can mean being read to, listening to prerecorded stories and (perhaps most importantly) learning to make up stories for ourselves.
Shaping their view of the world The stories children hear shape their view of the world. Most small children live in quite a limited environment, so stories are a way of expanding their world. They can also help teach them how to deal with real life situations.
How to make your own story stones You can buy story stones of course, but where is the fun in that? Collect stones from a walk, or a visit to the beach and decorate them at home.
Three things you will need: Stones – preferably a consistent colour – very pale or very dark work best I have found. Smoother the better. Waterproof pens – you can use Sharpie permanent markers, but the best pens are POSCA acrylic paint pens. Imagination Step 1: Collect your stones (or if you are desperate you can buy them from a garden centre!). Try to find different shapes since that will ensure that there are lots of options later on. Often once you have started this sort of activity you will find a child pouncing on a stone in the fields and announcing it is perfect for a particular image. Step 2: Dump the stones into the sink, fill the sink with water, and have someone who loves to play in water scrub each one with a brush. Step 3: Put the stones out to dry. Make sure they are dry before you try to draw on them. Step 4: Start drawing! It’s a good idea to find a stone that suggests an image to you (your child). Keep the outlines simple and use lots of block colour. Step 5: Let the stones dry - be careful not to smudge them! Once the ink is dry you might want to apply a coat of spray varnish, to make extra sure everything is waterproof. You’re ready to start telling stories!
Story games to play Game 1 Turn all the stones over. Take it in turns to pick a stone and use the picture on it to tell the next part of the story. Game 2 Roll a dice. Use the number of stones that comes up to tell your story. Game 3 With a partner, each choose three stones. Tell a story to your partner with your stones. Scientists have found that children who have fiction read to them regularly find it easier to understand other people and show more empathy (the ability to understand that other people have different thoughts and feelings to us). These skills are essential for understanding and predicting other people’s thoughts and behavior – and that in turn is an essential basis for developing effective social skills. If you’re rushing around looking after small children, it can be hard to find the time to sit down and read to them every day. Parents also might not feel comfortable reading aloud to their children no matter how much they’d like to, through lack of confidence, or worries about their own literacy skills.
Story stones Children will frequently consume stories without reading – by listening to written or made-up stories… but also as story creators! These activities are essential to their imaginative and intellectual development, as well as being the foundation of a love of reading. Supporting and encouraging story-telling is something you can do to help your children develop literacy skills. Story stones are one way of doing this that is cheap (almost free) and fun for everyone. Story stones are just a method of firing imagination. Think of them as seeds – plant one, or a dozen, and see where they take you. All Stars Cricket, launched in 2017, has had an incredible first year with over 1,500 centres delivering the programme to over 37,000 kids. It’s been such a success that the end of year parent survey revealed that 85% of parents want their child to return in 2018 and bring a friend!

The programme costs around £40, which includes the 8 week All Stars Cricket programme (1 x hour session per week for 8 weeks) and a pack including bat, ball, rucksack, cap and t-shirt (personalised with their name) – all delivered to your door. The All Stars programme is delivered by trained volunteers who deliver game based activities that teaches basic cricket skills like catching, throwing, hitting a moving ball and social skills like team work and communication. Held at accredited cricket clubs these courses are a perfect way for children to learn about cricket and make friends in safe and fun environment. Most Centres start their programmes from May 11th, running to July but please check your local venue for details. With Perform drama classes well-established in Reigate, Leatherhead and Oxted, we spoke to Jessica Harrison to find out why she has been sending her children, Ellie (9) and George (6), to Perform since the age of 4. “Ellie is a natural performer” says Jessica, “so Perform was always going to work for her.
