News Firewalk for St Catherine’s St Catherine's Hospice is looking for 100 fearless fundraisers to put their bravery to the ultimate test as they walk barefoot across 15 foot of red hot embers. Taking place on 2nd March at 8pm, in Crawley's historic High Street, the thrilling Firewalk is the first of its kind for the local hospice – and not one for the faint hearted! No previous experience is needed as partner UK Firewalk's expert staff will share the secrets of successful firewalking with everyone who takes part before they face the flames. Alongside the Firewalk, there's also a brick walk for under 18's who are keen to tackle a tough challenge to raise money for their local hospice.

parkrun comes to Dorking Try out those brand new running shoes with the launch of parkrun at Denbies in the new year. parkrun is a free and inclusive 5km run, jog or walk that takes place on Saturday mornings between 9-10am in over 400 locations across the country. Mole Valley district council had been looking for a site in Dorking and Denbies came forward to offer their land for the event. Jeannette Simpson, Denbies Chief Operating Officer, said “Denbies are very pleased to host parkrun within the estate. It is a fantastic community event which we are delighted to be involved with”. Your children’s FUTURE
We all want the best for our families; health, happiness and financial security. But what steps should you be taking now to protect their future, particularly when you’re no longer around to do so? The New Year is a good time to get your affairs in orders and get a carefully thought out and professionally drafted Will organised. If you die without a valid Will in place, your estate will be distributed in accordance with rules which are unlikely to reflect your wishes nor the reasonable expectations of those who have been bereaved. For example, did you know that: • If you are married or in a civil partnership, do not assume that everything automatically passes to the survivor. It might not, depending on your particular family and financial circumstances. • The Law simply does not recognise a ‘common law spouse’ and so if you are cohabiting, the survivor may not receive anything on your death. This can leave the survivor in the difficult position of having to bring a claim against the estate for financial support. There are other strong reasons for putting your Will in place namely, • You get to choose the person(s) to be the legal guardians of your children, rather than relying on those left behind to decide for themselves or take the matter to the family courts to determine. • You can make sure that your children’s inheritance is looked after, rather than frittered away, by appointing someone to manage a trust fund until they are old enough to take responsibility.
• With an increase in remarriage, it is important to ensure that suitable provision is made for children from previous relationships (and former spouses) avoiding the cost and emotional trauma of court proceedings. Although it can be a difficult topic to talk about, taking the time now to organise your affairs for when you are no longer around, can make all the difference to your loved ones. If you are sitting around in an adult unicorn onesie, eating crumpets and musing about the extra pounds you can’t seem to shed, now is the time to take some action. The New Year is a good time to start a health regime or exercise routine. It may be as simply as just giving up cake and walking to work, or it could be taking up boxing or giving weightlifting a go.
If you have a Spare Ten Minutes
Why not scoot to school with the kids? Having an adult scooter is a great way of keeping up with the kids, plus you’ll get home quicker. Jumping on your scooter not only saves time, scooting can also increase feelings of mental alertness and create better reaction times. Adult scooting is also a great way to build up fitness; it’s low impact and works major muscle groups. You can also burn around 300 kcals per hour!

If you have 20 Minutes
Try a HIIT workout. The bestselling Body Coach Joe Wicks espouses the benefits of short 15 to 20-minute high intensity workouts and low carb eating. High Intensity Interval Training for the uninitiated is a timed set of exercises, which work the whole body. Early Years Oh no! It is the season of the dreaded pox. Most common between March-May, Stacey from Daisy First Aid Guildford & Redhill explains the symptoms of chicken pox and how to treat them…
The Truth About Chicken Pox
Most common in children under 10 years old, chicken pox is a mild condition that usually passes on its own but it is highly contagious - before you even know they have it. The incubation period before the spots come out can be anything between 5 and 21 days. Chicken Pox are most infectious a couple of days before the spots begin to come out which means you are likely to pass it on without knowing.
What to look out for Some children will be smothered in circular, red, fluid filled itchy spots, other children may only get a few spots. The spots usually start in a small cluster somewhere on the body. They usually appear behind the ears, on the face, scalp, chest and stomach before spreading to the arms and the legs. The spots can also have a white head to them. Your child may also experience other symptoms due to the illness, including; high temperature or fever, lack of appetite and general lathery, seeming a bit out of sorts.
How should you treat chicken pox? As chicken pox is a mild illness, it usually passes on its own after a few days so there is no need to see a doctor unless you are concerned for any reason. There are no antibiotics for chicken pox. As long as there are no allergies, you can give liquid antihistamine such as Piriton to help with the itching. You can also use a calamine lotion or aqueous cream on the skin to relieve itching - 'Families swears by Poxclin mousse. It’s pretty impossible, but try to stop your children itching the spots, as they can scar.

If you child has a temperature, you can also use paracetamol such as Calpol but do not give your child ibuprofen while they have chicken pox as there is a risk of this causing an adverse reaction.

You child will remain contagious until all of the spots have blistered or scabbed over so it is important to keep them away from childcare/school and those that have not had chickenpox already until that time. Usually the spots come out and blister over within about 5 days, but it can take up to 14 days in some cases.
What else you should know… It is possible to have chicken pox more than once, usually if your child had it under the age of 18 months old or had a very mild does previously. The majority of people however build up enough immunity when they have it to stop this happening again. The following groups are at risk of serious problems with chicken pox and should seek medical advice if exposed to chickenpox: • pregnant women • newborn babies • people with weak immune systems • people taking steroid medication

Club News Boosting Children’s Self-esteem and Life Skills with Perform All children find some things difficult. Some hate speaking out in class, some struggle making friends, and others have so much energy they find it hard to concentrate. Perform is a unique drama school that uses drama, dance and singing to bring out every child's true potential. “Perform is NOT a stage school” stresses Perform Producer, Karen. “It teaches life skills through fun drama games and end of term shows. The real aim of the classes is to help children develop the 4Cs: Confidence, Concentration, Coordination and Communication. “Classes are small and have both a Producer and a Teacher. Making Maths Fun By Kjartan Poskitt
I always say that maths is like broccoli. You either like it or you hate it but you have to have some because it’s good for you. Now I’ll tell you a secret. I do not like broccoli, but I do find it helps to have a bit of brown sauce on it! Similarly, maths becomes more exciting when it’s spiced up a little. It’s important that your children are comfortable enough with simple sums that they don’t have to rely on a calculator - that’s like using arm bands for swimming! If they can develop an instinct for numbers, simple sums become much easier. The secret is to spend some time playing around with numbers and getting to know them. Here are a few little facts, games and tricks to share with your children to help them see that numbers have quirky behaviours and make fun patterns.
Trick 1 If you write out the digits 1 2 3 4, you can turn them into 12 = 3 x 4. You can also do this with 5 6 7 8 because 56 = 7 x 8.
Trick 2 Pick any three consecutive numbers (e.g. 4, 5, 6). Multiply the smallest by the biggest, and then add one. (So here we get 4 x 6 =24, then 24 + 1 = 25). The answer is always the same as the middle number squared … i.e. times by itself. (Here we get 5 x 5 = 25 YAY!) This works with any three consecutive numbers, so let’s try 7, 8, 9. 7 x 9 = 63, then 63 + 1 = 64 and that’s the same as 8 x 8!

The numbers in the 3 times table have a special trick, because if you add the digits together, the answer will always divide by 3. For instance 8 x 3 =24, and 2 + 4 = 6 which divides by 3. You can use this to test if any number divides by 3. Let’s test 71865. 7+1+8+6+5 = 27 which divides by 3, so 71865 also divides by 3.
Trick 4 Prime numbers are number which will only divide by themselves and 1. For example, 7 is a prime number because nothing else divides into it; 8 is not a prime number because 4 x 2 = 8. Place seven playing cards in a pile face down with the bottom card as a joker. Choose a magic number less than 7. (Let’s say you choose 4). Education card, turn it face up and then put it to the bottom of the pack. Keep doing this, turning every 4th card face up. The last card to be turned over will be the joker! Try this trick again picking a different magic number – eg 5. It will always work! What’s more you can have any prime number of cards, so try the trick with 5, 11, 13 or even 17 cards! The magic number can be any number smaller than the number of cards. Throw three dice, but don’t let anyone else see how they land. Tell everybody what the three numbers add to, and also what they multiply to make. Who can work out the numbers on the dice? So, for example, if the three dice add to 9 and multiply to make 12, what are the three numbers? Answer: 1, 2, 6. There – I hope some of these things help. And just to make you feel better, while you’re practising your numbers, I’m going to go off and eat some broccoli! Nature Notes The Butterflies are Back! The extremely popular Butterflies in The Glasshouse exhibit returns to RHS Garden Wisley from 13th January-4th March, providing a tropical retreat for visitors in the chilly winter months. Make sure you layer-up to visit more than 50 species of exotic free-flying butterflies in the Tropical Zone of the cathedral-like Glasshouse, you’ll need to strip off as it gets so humid! Families learnt this the hard way whilst wearing a winter coat and a baby in a sling! The eye-catching exhibit will feature favourites from previous years, as well as new species like the Graphium doson - a black tropical butterfly with pale blue semitransparent central wing bands that are formed by large
Get Closer to Nature on The Wey & Arun Canal If you have never taken a walk, or a boat trip, down the Wey and Arun Canal at Loxwood, then Winter is a lovely time to enjoy the peace and serenity of this stretch of waterway. Called ‘London’s Lost Route to the Sea’, the canal links the Wey Navigation near Guildford to the south coast, via the Arun Navigation. Visitors can spot all sorts of wildlife along the route, including regulars like Kingfishers, Grey Herons, Swans

The butterflies on display show their magnificent colours and patterns amongst the tropical plantings, such as palm trees, bananas and climbers, as well as the aquatic plants that thrive in the warm jungle pool. Visitors can pick up a spotter’s guide on arrival to identify the ones you have seen, and for those visitors keen to become butterfly experts, there is a familyfriendly Education Zone. This interactive area will spark imagination and enable visitors to learn all about the intriguing lifecycle of a butterfly. On the launch weekend (13-14th January), visitors will get the chance to decorate butterfly willow sculptures and children can enjoy face painting. If you haven’t dropped in to Pistachios in Redhill Memorial Park recently, then half term is the perfect excuse to take the kids for a scoot and an ice cream. Local mum Hanna Dunsdon has recently taken over ownership of the café and has been spending the past few months upgrading the menu to include a wider hot drinks selection, delicious homemade cakes and new winter warmers like soups and pastas. Pistachios in the Park has also been getting involved with local community events and charities, helping collect for Give a Christmas Gift and Stripey Stork appeals. Did you know they also run all sorts of free and affordable dropin classes during term time, including: Monday – Storytime with Michelle at 11am Tuesday – Hawthorns School of Dance (Streetdance) Wednesday – Hawthorns School of Dance (Ballet) Thursday – Creation Station craft Reigate School of Sewing also run their adult evening classes at the venue on Mon and Wed eves, and they’re hoping to start Yoga in the Park in the new year! The themed playframe has something for all ages, from super deep ball pits (I lost my kids for a while!), to vertical slides and sensory activities on lots of levels. On the day we visited, we were greeted with balloon modellers and Dora the Explorer and my boys (age 4 & 5) were razzing round like loonies!
