June 2014 sees the opening of Glass & Craft, a glass painting studio & local craft shop located in the wonderful surroundings of Kersey Mill near Hadleigh. The idea of the glass painting studio stems from Stacy’s current business, Unique Glasses, where Stacy hand paints all types of glassware for all occasions for customers throughout the UK. Stacy thought it would be fun for others to try their hand at glass painting and the idea of Glass & Craft was born. The concept of the glass paint studio is similar to the ceramic cafes in and around Suffolk where you can paint on pottery. An Educational Resource
Concord Media is an educational charity which has been operating in Ipswich for about 50 years. They specialise in programmes on DVD about social issues, including several child care programmes, which cover a variety of topics from ‘I don’t need Toys’, about children playing with everyday objects, to baby massage and yoga for very young children, and the ground-breaking films by James and Joyce Robertson, which show the effects of separation from the mother, and ways in which the trauma can be lessened. These historic films were instrumental in changing visiting regulations in hospitals and the way little children are cared for when separation is inevitable. You can’t fail to be moved by the experience of the little boy who has never been away from his mother before, when he goes into a residential nursery for nine days and is cared for by a number of different nurses, and fails to connect with them.
Birch Farm Family Fun Day On Saturday 28th June from 8.30pm – 3pm Birch Farm Play Complex & Nursery, Hintlesham are opening their doors to everyone and hosting a family fun day. There will be much for every member of the family to enjoy. As in the past two years there will be class sessions for you to observe and in some cases taster sessions to try plus many craft and retail stalls for you to browse around. New for this year is a varied schedule of activities and entertainment during the day for the children to enjoy, from feeding and petting horses to being in awe of a magician (TBC), from painting crafts to teddy bear fun and much more. All the facilities will be open for you to view and the under 5’s play barn will be open all day. This year’s Larking Gowen Ipswich half marathon will take place on Sunday 21st September 2014. The event will again be hosted in the picturesque Christchurch Park, Ipswich with the race starting and finishing in front of the iconic Mansion House. The main race will start at 10:00am and there is
Quayside Nursery’s Big Lunch
The Big Lunch is an event held in partnership with the Eden project to help bring communities together. Quayside Nursery holds a Big Lunch on the 1st Sunday of June each year with a twist, calling it the Big Diversity Lunch, welcoming everyone. They aim to have as many different foods from around the world as well as entertainment and stalls. Quayside Nursery in Ipswich belongs to Bright Horizons family solutions which raise money for the foundation which supports local family units. This year they have two photographers for the event, one taking studio shoots and the other of the event as it unfolds with over 30 stalls from beauty to homemade crafts, books, Avon, flowers, Ipswich Guide Group, charity groups and food including a burger van, South Indian food and entertainment provided by the Ipswich Malayalee association.

Local News A New Playschool Is Coming to Grange Farm, Kesgrave
Martlesham Playschool is pleased to announce they are opening another playschool on Grange Farm. After discussions with Kesgrave Town Council they are proud to be using the Millennium Jubilee Hall, at Millennium Way, Century Drive, Grange Farm. Everyone concerned are very excited with the facilities – a large main room, kitchen and toilet areas, storage and a secure outdoor area. Great location near a large green area, the woods and parking! The new playschool shall be open Monday to Friday, term time only, morning sessions only and hope to be ready for the autumn term. Jenny Wren’s Yarns was set up two years ago by mother and daughter team Sue Newbery and Lois Mickleburgh. Both have a love of knitting and crochet and wanted to bring a new kind of yarn shop to Ipswich. As well as selling beautiful yarns Sue and Lois wanted to bring knitters into the shop in a more social way so they planned a space with a large table to use for clubs and classes. They host a weekly knit group on Fridays between 12-2pm where knitters and crocheters can bring their projects and have a knit and natter with tea and biscuits! There is a full programme of classes covering topics from beginner knitting and crochet to needle felting and spinning. Have you ever wanted to enjoy the freedom of cycling but lack the confidence to get on your bike? Perhaps you’ve never learned to cycle and now want to begin, or maybe you just want to update your road skills. Then Pink Sky Cycle training is definitely for you. Cycling is becoming so popular as a means to keep fit and have fun. Pink Sky Cycling are keen to ensure more women are cycling with the skills and confidence to negotiate traffic on the roads today. We believe cycle training is the way forward and have trained over 400 women since 2008, with the support of funding from Realise Futures/CLSD. 4 week courses (one morning OR one afternoon a week) are held at various locations in Ipswich from 29 April – July, and Felixstowe from 3 May. Bicycles and equipment are provided, you just turn up on the day. The total course cost is £30, with free places for those unemployed or on low income. Places are limited to 6 women on each course to ensure a personal and relaxed approach, with two female instructors to support with building confidence. Professional Storyteller Justine de Mierre joins the Lazy Daisy Team For the last 15 years Justine de Mierre has worked as a storyteller entertaining young children and adults alike. Justine has an impressive list of accolades to her name, including ground breaking work in a Children’s hospital where her sessions enabled children to tell their own stories as part of their recovery from a wide range of conditions. Justine has joined the Lazy Daisy team as a Daisy Tots yoga teacher. Her great new sessions are available to parents and children and to nurseries, schools, pre schools and toddler groups. Each class takes the children in the group on a journey, maybe to the jungle or underwater or even to the moon. Throughout this journey the children develop a wide range of skills which help them achieve key early learning goals such as personal, social and emotional development, communication, language and literacy, mathematical development, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical development and creative development. Martial Arts Most youngsters have energy levels which often provoke comments such as ‘where do they get all their energy from’ or, ’ I wish I had their energy’ from the parents/carers who are racing around after them hoping that sometime soon their child/children may slow down and need a rest. If you are the ‘owner’ of children that fit this description have you ever considered channelling this energy into a martial arts class? Martial arts classes are a fun way for both boys and girls from the age of four to achieve fitness and focus. A typical hour-long class begins and ends with a bow to the teacher, or master. After a warm-up, students practice the art’s particular skills, which may include kicks, punches, and blocks. Each requires concentration and strict attention. Progress is often marked by the belt system, which takes the beginner from a white belt through a variety of colours until black. Testing for each new level is a good exercise in setting and achieving goals. Martial Arts help teach self-discipline and socialization skills. The respect children learn, whether from bowing or standing still and waiting for the next command, can be the most important benefit of classes which often carries over into school, helping to improve confidence, behaviour and even results within the classroom. In fact, some parents whose children have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) report great success in martial arts classes because self-control and concentration are exactly the skills underdeveloped in ADHD kids. Local Martial Arts Academy owner Gary Staff explains what has kept him involved in the sport for many years ‘Martial arts is a discipline, self-defence technique, power tool an all. But most importantly it is a way of life. The knowledge it has to offer to live a better life is limitless, therefore we explore....... It has been a way of life for me for many years. How long has your business been running and the reason why you started your own business? My care at Home started trading in July 2013. The idea came about when myself and my business partner were on maternity leave. We were talking about the care that our grandparents had before they passed and decided that we could provide a quality service that we would be proud of. We then spent our entire maternity leave researching the business and getting all our processes in place. We provide care that is tailored to the individual needs of our clients supporting them to be as independent as possible in their own home. We employ the best staff and train them face to face to ensure that the service we provide is of high quality and is a service we would be happy for our grandparents to receive. What do you enjoy about running your own business? I love the new challenges that it provides. This has been a real journey for me and I have achieved things I never thought I would have. I have grown in my own self confidence. I also love the fact that I am providing such as positive role model for my daughters. I have 3 girls, 7, 5 and 18 months, the oldest two talk about the work I do and are really interested in it. They both talk about them stating their own businesses when they are older and that makes me smile.
Is there anything you don’t enjoy about running your own business? It is a lot of hard work and you can never switch off as there is always something going round in your mind. Although as the business grows this will get easier as there will be more staff to take on some responsibility. What does the future hold for your business? We hope to continue to grow and be able to start to provide care in other parts of Suffolk and then eventually beyond. How do you fit your business around family life? It’s hectic! I mostly try to work in the evenings or while my children are at school and the youngest is asleep, although this is not always possible. I have a good network of friends and my mum that help me out with childcare where possible. I do try to make sure I make time for the kids and do as much as possible with them. The time I do spend with them is quality time. What advice would you give to any parents considering starting up their own business? I would say go for it. The whole reason for starting this was to be able to have a good work and family life balance and on the whole I do manage it. As reported by the ASA and highlighted in a video message recorded by Prince William, drowning is one of the most common causes of accidental deaths of children in England. Some of these tragedies could be averted, below are some top tips on how to keep your child safe near water: Make sure that you fully supervise children at all times around water. It isn’t just paddling pools, ponds and rivers – it can be buckets of water, recycling barrels and even puddles Empty water from the paddling pool at the end of every day – not only does this prevent accidents from happening but it can also prevent the water becoming stagnant and bugs breeding Always supervise bath time (never leave children unattended). Empty the bath as soon as possible after use Being on your mobile phone or reading takes your eyes away from your children – this is not full supervision
With summer just around the corner and the weather warming up, people will be spending more time outdoors and potentially around water in and away from the home. Did you know that people can drown in as little as 2cm of water?
Large pools should be kept secure, ideally with child resistant fences around them and lockable gates If a child goes missing check water features first, including any outdoor containers which may be carrying water Teach your children to wait until a grown up gives them permission to go near or into water – this can save lives Whilst it may be a hot day, the water temperature could still be very cool so be careful with young children as the temperature could shock them Teach older siblings the dangers that water can cause to younger more vulnerable children If your child’s lips turn blue when in water, get them out right away, change them and keep warm until the lips return to their normal colour Take special care when visiting other people’s gardens and keep an eye out for dangers Structured baby swimming classes such as Puddle Ducks, teach children to be safe in water by teaching them key life-saving skills in a fun way, appropriate to the age of the children. It’s easy to massage a newborn baby when they lay still, “Not so easy when they are getting wriggly and on the move” is a common place response I get. Yes it is slightly more challenging, I agree, coming away from it looking like you’ve been in a sauna is not the idea! But often this is the reality and therefore sadly the point that baby massage tends to stop being used. But with the right adaptions, it can still be easy and great fun for both. You will also be able to continue the same benefits as before; Helping with digestive problems, general aches and pains in the body, as well as maintaining a strong bond and nurturing/ loving touch.

Have you in the past attended a baby massage course? Yes with Callum What were you hoping to gain for you and Jonas by attending a baby massage course? To spend time together leaning how to massage him correctly and the benefits it had. It really made me feel good as a mum being able to do something to him that made him smile so much but was also doing us both good.
Did you find the massage moves easy to learn and how did Jonas respond to them? Ann goes over everything slowly and as the class sizes are so small she’s able to give you her help if you need it in mastering a stroke. Have you used the massage techniques at home at all? Yes, Jonas enjoys it after his bath. I have also used some of the moves on his tummy in the night which has soothed him back to sleep. His older brother has also asked for a massage. Ann shows you how you can adapt the massage for older children too so not only have Jonas and I benefited but Callum has too. Have you enjoyed attending the course? Very much so, I’ve found it relaxing as well. I’ve really enjoyed concentrating on Jonas and finding out what he likes massaged, the benefits it has and where his tickley areas are. Has it been of benefit to you and Jonas? If yes, in what ways? Yes. It’s taught me how to relax him, how to help with tummy trouble. It’s great in giving you skin to skin contact too, I feel that I’m really able to bond with him too as we are making eye contact most of the time.

March of 1,000 Fairies - the world record attempt for the largest gathering of fairies in one place, in aid of Woolverstone Wish is happening on Sunday 22nd June, times TBC but it will be around lunchtime.
Once again Kerseys Solicitors have taken on the challenge to organise another Guinness World Record attempt for the largest gathering of fairies in one place. Family Matters Pre-nuptial agreements explained

In previous articles, Family Solicitor, Josephine Hayes, has considered family-related legal issues such as the law relating to unmarried couples and how to identify your legal position to take account of your personal circumstances. She also offers advice on a daily basis to those whose relationships have broken down. In this article, she discusses the subject of pre-nuptial agreements, what they are, who should consider making them, and what the current legal position is regarding them.
A fine romance?
Of course this is an extreme example, but it may prove a useful tool for relationships where one party has significantly greater assets than the other. Also remember that if those assets are tied up in property, discuss any future property purchases carefully with your solicitor.
Does it hold up? Historically, pre-nups were not worth the paper they were written on, but the tide is definitely turning in this respect. Pre-nups cannot replace the jurisdiction of the Court or the Child Support Agency, but they are no longer void on the grounds of public policy. The Court will take them into account when exercising its discretion during financial proceedings on divorce. As with the case just discussed, pre-nup agreements are increasingly accepted by courts following a marriage breakdown. The Court of Appeal recently reviewed the enforceability of pre-nups and indicated that in future, ‘due weight’ should be given to any contract freely entered into by couples, under the judge’s discretion. There was a landmark decision in the Supreme Court a few years ago and that case, now known as Radmacher, laid down the principle that a pre-nuptial agreement is likely to be binding provided it is fair. To prove that the agreement is fair, it is essential that a pre-nuptial agreement is entered into correctly and that it complies with general contractual requirements, such as:
For many of us, when we think about a pre-nuptial agreement or (pre-nup as they are often shortened to), we think of celebrity couples or the super rich, unsentimentally agreeing their financial status before getting married. However, for ordinary people, it can feel very unromantic to whip up a pre-nup in the same breath as a marriage proposal, and there is some uncertainty as to whether they are actually legally binding in the event of a marriage breakdown.
1. The agreement must be procedurally fair, free from undue influence and agreed on the basis of independent legal advice 2. Full financial disclosure should be provided 3. The agreement should be fair and meet both parties’ basic needs 4. The agreement should be executed as a Deed 5. No obligations should be imposed on a third party unless they have expressly agreed 6. Both parties must intend to create legal relations 7. The agreement cannot seek to override the jurisdiction of the Court
In essence, a pre-nup is a contract entered into before marriage between both parties with the intention of regulating the couples’ financial affairs if the couple separates. It can be an especially useful tool for those entering into relationships on an unequal financial footing. They serve to provide financial security, and therefore peace of mind by financially protecting the individual and their family, and make family finances easier to manage should the relationship breakdown.
The Law Commission has recently proposed a draft bill to make pre-nuptial agreements legally binding. This would create a climate where families would have financial control and independence without being reliant on the findings of a court following costly and time-consuming litigation.
Pre-nup anyone? So who should consider a pre-nup? Well, if you are a young couple and it is your first marriage, with both of you in a similar financial position, a pre-nup is probably not for you. If however, you are a young heiress who has fallen head over heels in love with the gardener, then you would be well-advised to consider a pre-nup. In a recent case, (Luckwell v Limata [2014] EWHC 502 (Fam)) where an heiress did marry an ordinary working man, a pre-nuptial agreement was entered into, willingly by both sides, with good independent legal advice. The judge found that because the man, Frankie, was age 36 at the time of the pre-nuptial, of normal intelligence and mentally stable, there was no great reason not to take the pre-nup at its word. The pre-nup settlement was heavily in favour of the wife, whereas the starting position in divorce is to consider splitting assets equally between the couple. In this case there had been children born during the marriage and so the judge felt it was appropriate not to cause difficulties for the children living one lifestyle with mum and a more limited lifestyle when with dad. He awarded the husband a substantial sum, to provide a home for his children, until the youngest child reached the age of 22, at which point the house would have to be sold and a large proportion of the balance returned to the wife.

Even if you are not an heiress marrying the gardener, you may well be considering a second marriage. If you also own property, you may wish to safeguard it against the possibility of your second marriage ending in divorce. If you already have children, you may also wish to ensure that property is not claimed by your future spouse against their interests. Although this may seem mercenary, it is practical and wise to consider the demise of a marriage as a possibility. Should you separate, any property you bring into a marriage will be seen as a marital asset. The starting point for the court in dividing those marital assets if you divorce is always equality. Discussing your options with a solicitor who is familiar with the current status of pre-nuptial arrangements will be prudent in many cases. Above all, do not leave the resolution of your family finances and the security of your children’s future to chance. Consider your financial position carefully and protect yourself and your family by taking legal advice. dates for your diary Celebrate the Queen’s Baton Relay’s visit to Suffolk Monday 9th June The Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay is the curtain-raiser to the XX Commonwealth Games. Over a period of 288 days the baton will visit 70 nations and territories, cover 190,000 kilometres and involve a third of the world’s population, making it the world’s most engaging relay. On Monday 9th June, midway through its two-week tour of the country, it will arrive in Suffolk. During the Baton’s day in our region, it will be taken to a number of locations across Suffolk to celebrate the Commonwealth Games, Team England and promote participation in sport. LOWESTOFT – 08:00 The Baton’s journey through Suffolk will begin in Lowestoft, England’s most easterly town, with a breakfast run, jog, walk, buggy push or toddle along the seafront. A mini festival of sport will take place at the same time, and will inspire Lowestoft to join in and try a range of sports and activities. NEWMARKET – 11:30 Then it’s onto the world famous Newmarket Racecourse for a mass participation relay involving local schools to take place on the Rowley Mile. Again, a mini festival of sport will give school children and spectators a chance to try out a range of sports and activites.
IPSWICH – 16:45 The first stop in Ipswich for the Queen’s Baton Relay will be at Northgate Sports Centre where the Baton will participate as a special VIP guest in the closing ceremony of a Quad Kids Athletics competition involving 750 young people. Women’s Tour charity cycle ride Sunday 11th May Women and girls are being invited to take part in a charity cycle ride in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care on the day that the world’s best female cyclists cross the finish line on the Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds at the end of the inaugural Women’s Tour.
The Women on Wheels charity ladies cycle ride will allow participants to choose from a short (5 miles) or long (20 miles) route through countryside cycle paths starting at 8am and 8.30am (sign in from 7am). The rides will start in Charter Square and finish at the Abbey Gardens before The Women’s Tour’s grand finish on Angel Hill. The ride will be fully marshalled and signed and is open to women and girls of all abilities aged 8 years and over. Mildenhall Cycling Club and the West Suffolk Wheelers and Triathlon Club are working with organisers Cycle Suffolk and supporters Suffolk County Council, Suffolk Sport and Abbeycroft Leisure to make the event a fantastic fundraiser for St Nicholas Hospice Care. St Nicholas Hospice Care is a local charity which supports people and families who are living with a lifeshortening illness in West Suffolk and Thetford. All of their services are
provided completely free of charge so they rely on the local community raising the £11,000 per day it costs to run the Hospice. The 175th Hadleigh Show - Saturday 17th May 2014 Hadleigh Show located as always in the beautiful setting of Holbecks Park (IP7 5PE) is one of the oldest one-day Agricultural Shows in the Country; this year it is celebrating 175 years. The nine showing and display rings will be filled with more than 1000 large and small livestock from daybreak to dusk, all hoping to be award winners. Among the ring displays are the Luscitanos and the fast and furious Shetland Pony Grand National with riders looking for a place in the next round and just fresh from the Windsor Horse show. This initiative has launched the career of several famous National Hunt jockeys among them Sam Tristram-Davis, so is well worth a watch to spot the jockeys of the future. All around the avenues are various entertainments, musicians and acts. Popular Jitterbug Dancers will get people dancing in the aisles, the living statues will amuse and for Thursday there is the giant animatronic T-Rex dinosaur, who organisers hope will not encounter the new Parrot Roadshow – the only travelling one of its type featuring rescue birds. The Military Zone will represent all the armed forces and not only feature an Apache, but also a special Apache simulator not usually seen outside the base. If shopping until you drop is a must for a great day out there is plenty to choose from – more than 700 tradestands, including 72 new ones. As ever, the Show has plenty of different activities to entertain and amuse for all the family. Win a family weekend pass The Suffolk Fun Festival is offering one Families Suffolk family the chance to win a family weekend pass including to the festival held at Easton Farm Park. The Suffolk Fun festival on 2nd & 3rd August celebrates its second year at Easton Farm Park with an action-packed full weekend programme of events that will include music, magic, street theatre, puppets, kites, clowns and canoeing PLUS all the fun of the circus with stiilt-walking, plate-spinning, juggling, tightrope walking and more. The Crafty Barn will present a world of weather-proof indoor activities including face-painting, rocket building, cheese making, chocolate tasting, soap baking and lots more to inspire and amuse all ages and on Saturday night the Barmy Barn will host a fancy dress competition and disco. The RSPB and The Suffolk Wildlife Trust will be on hand to educate and entertain in equal measure with a range of naturebased activities and even the tiny tots can play, create and explore with the Imps toddler team. The spectacular Suffolk Kites will be back on Sunday with giant-size displays and make-yourown kite workshops, Snetterton Park models fly and race the latest model planes and cars and the more intrepid adventurers can build and fire a rocket or go canoeing along hidden stretches of the beautiful River Deben.
Join the team of eggcollectors, enjoy a pony ride, or a train ride, explore the indoor play-barns, experience the brand new outdoor playground with its giant sandpit and new tractor and trailer slide or settle down and watch a classic movie in their own little theatre. The outdoor band-stand will stage a spectacular array of local talent with live music, including a samba band, morris dancers and the Easton Rabble Choir (who you can join on the spot and sing along with) and everyone‘s favourite traditional seaside stars, Punch & Judy will battle it out on the Green. An assortment of delicious hot and cold food and drink will be available all day in the Farm Park café plus a range of hand-picked local food stalls will offer a wide variety of tasty treats, snacks, ice-creams and drinks.
