mini First Aid advice on:
Happy Body, Healthy Mind
Febrile Convulsions
Sunday 30th June, 2019: 7pm - 9.30pm
The majority of parents have never heard of Febrile Convulsions. Naomi Cooper From Mini First Aid Suffolk is here to explain all. Babies and children often get ill, coughs and colds seem like a monthly occurrence, not to mention the dreaded chicken pox that is bound to appear sooner or later. It’s a well know fact that when children become unwell, they often also get a temperature. Whilst mild fevers are usually nothing to worry about and can be treated at home, Parents need to be aware that Febrile Convulsions can happen when a child has a fever (temp of 38c or above) They most often happen between the ages of six months and three years and affect 1 in 20 children. It can be frightening and distressing to see your child having a seizure, particularly if it's their first one. However, they are usually harmless if dealt with correctly and almost all children make a complete recovery afterwards.
What will it look like? A febrile seizure usually lasts for less than five minutes. Your child will: • Become stiff and their arms and legs may begin to twitch / shake. • Lose consciousness and may be incontinent. They may also vomit and foam at the mouth, and their eyes may roll back. After the seizure, your child may be sleepy for up to an hour.
This wonderful Mini Retreat for women has been designed by Suffolk Woman’s Wellness Centre to help you feel rejuvenated from the inside out. Why is it important to connect the mind and body? Medical evidence reveals a genuine reciprocal connection between the mind and body. Practices like meditation and other relaxation techniques have shown to alter not only mind-body, but also mind-heart connections. Meditation and relaxation practices can help shift mental perceptions and reactions to situations. By becoming aware of tension and anxiety, and connecting to the breath, the mind will relax and the body will too. You can join Nina Parnham at Suffolk Women’s Wellness Centre for a wonderful Release and Relaxation session for just £25.00. In this 2.5 hour workshop you will: • Stretch achy areas • Gently release tension in your body using balls and rollers • Mobilise your body with some delicious opening exercises • Release tightness to improve your posture and breathing • Enjoy a guided relaxation session to bring the body and mind together • Enjoy a pink salt and aromatherapy foot bath to revive tired feet! The session finishes with some healthy snacks and a cup of herbal tea. What a perfect way to revive. Leave feeling calm, stress free and stretched! You can book online: www.mamawellness.as.me/retreats
What to do 1. Put pillows around them to protect your baby or child from hurting themselves, don’t try to restrain or them. 2. Cool them down, remove any excess clothing or bedding, or open a window. Take care not to cool them down too much.
3. Put them into the recovery position (see image for baby) or traditional recovery position if they are over 12 months.
4. Call 999/112 for an ambulance. 5. While you wait for the ambulance check their breathing, and response levels.

How Sugar-swaps can help reduce your child’s sugar intake
Since January, pupils at Ormiston Sudbury Academy have been taking part in ‘Sugar-swaps’ swapping sugary snacks and sweets for healthier alternatives such as fruit or vegetables. The pupils have been using ‘Sugar Swaps’ diaries, to record where they have swapped a sugary food or drink for a healthier option. Did you know that half of the sugar in our children’s diets comes from sugary drinks, sweets, biscuits, cakes, puddings, sugary breakfast cereals and higher-sugar yoghurts and puddings? But just one or two everyday swaps can really make a difference to how much sugar your child is having, while still keeping them happy. As well as losing weight, some of the benefits of reducing your sugar intake include: having more energy, improved concentration and a stronger immune system. Funding is available for similar local projects which offer new and creative ideas to encourage a healthier lifestyle for children and young people, through the Sugar Reduction Fund, a partnership
In association with:
between Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Community Foundation.
Need inspiration? Why not try some of these sugar swaps: Chocolate cereal Shredded Wholegrain cereal Fizzy drinks No added sugar drinks or low fat milk Cake bars Fresh or tinned fruit (in juice) More information about sugar swaps can be found at: www.nhs.uk/change4life To find out how your school or organisation could get involved, call 01473 602602, or visit www.suffolkcf. org.uk/grants/sugar-reduction-fund

What is a Special Guardianship Order?
Special Guardianship Orders were introduced in 2005 under the Children Act 1989 to bridge the gap between adoption and an Order for who the child should live with. Why should I choose a Special Guardianship Order? Special Guardianship Orders are suitable when a child has been living with you for a period of at least one year, or if they have been placed in your care during the course of care proceedings, and remain in place until the child has attained the age of 18. Such an Order affords the Special Guardian parental responsibility, but does not strip those who also have parental responsibility of it. The Special Guardian is therefore able to make almost all decisions without the need of the parents’ consent or approval. Conversely, whilst a Child Arrangements Order may determine who the child lives with, it does not afford the Guardian parental responsibility and, therefore, no decisions can be made by the Guardian without the parents’ consent. If the child was originally the subject of Local Authority intervention, then the Special Guardian may be entitled to local authority funding by way of a Special Guardian allowance. An allowance is not afforded to the Guardian under a Child Arrangements order.
What is the process? Your solicitor has to give the local authority 3 months’ notice of your intention to apply for the Order. In this 3 month span, the local authority must undertake a thorough and detailed assessment of you to determine your suitability, taking into account your housing arrangements, financial circumstances and your ability to care for the child. If the assessment is negative, then your chances of a successful application for a Special Guardianship Order are greatly reduced. However, if successful, you can then submit your application to the local Family Court, who will set down a date for hearing, and order the local authority to set out any allowance they are going to offer you. A Special Guardianship Order is a useful tool as it affords the child a permanent home, thus ensuring stability and security, without losing the link with their surviving birth parents.

Supporting Your Child with Exam Stress
A Minibeast Safari Adventure at Old Buckenham Hall
By Vicky Bellman We have come to the time of year when many children are preparing to face exams or tests at school. These exams or tests vary in their significance for your child’s future. For some, they will be the stepping stone to the next part of their educational journey, for others an assessment of their progress this academic year. Regardless of which category the exams or tests fall into, exam time is likely to be a pressured and overwhelming time for most children and their parents. Stress and anxiety in young children is particularly heightened at this time of year as they deal with performance-related concerns related to their educational tests. These tests can often feel like tests of who they are. Their behaviour may suffer during a stress peak and it’s important to do what you can to respond from a place of calm. Invite them to join you in feeling calm, rather than you joining them in emotional chaos. With that in mind, here are a few tips to help you support your child at this time: Keep it in Perspective: Yes, of course exams are important. But everyone involved needs to remember it’s not the end of the world if there’s a hiccup and things don’t go as well as expected. There is almost always another chance. Help Manage Expectations: Working longer than is advisable for their age, or expecting grades significantly higher than their capabilities could well be detrimental to your child’s emotional and mental well-being. It’s important you guide your children appropriately in this area. Encourage Good Work Habits: Primary school children may find it hard to sustain concentration for longer than 30 minutes without a break. It’s important not to schedule too many study sessions in one day – one or two would be the appropriate maximum for this age group on a weekend or school holiday day, but less if they are also managing homework. Otherwise your child will become stressed and it’s much harder for them to learn under pressure. Remember the Building Blocks: Again, when it comes to the real basics, we can easily forget the building blocks for emotional wellbeing. Make sure that your child is getting enough good food, water and sleep! Free time is Vital: It’s a difficult balancing act, but it’s important to remember that primary school age children need plenty of free time - structured studying has to be balanced with plenty of unstructured free time. Relaxation and fun are vital. Getting outside to play and spending time relaxing with family and friends are super-important at this time. Connection is Important: Make sure you have family down time; perhaps, watching a movie one night with popcorn, or going for a family walk, or day out. Don’t just save the treats for the exam results, as this reinforces to children that they have more value when they achieve more. Vicky Bellman is a counsellor at Fegans, a Christian charity which counsels children and provides support for parents. For more information visit: www.fegans.org.uk/parent

Making A
Will
A Will is one of the most important documents you will ever sign and they are especially important for parents with young families to make sure children are properly provided for in the event of the death of a parent and to prevent any added stress or arguments. Making a Will need not be a stressful exercise – here are some things to consider to start the process:
“The first thing most new Wills clients say to me is that they’ve been putting off making Wills because they didn’t get round to it or didn’t know where to start. Here at Barker Gotelee we are able to guide you through the whole process of making a Will from start to finish and our aim is to make the process as stress-free as possible.” Lindsey Sharples, Private Client Solicitor. 01473 617343

Key considerations 1.
The first thing to consider is what your assets are (property, savings, investments owned by you and in joint names) and what is their value?
who do you want to benefit by your Will? 2. Secondly For most people this will be relatively easy – their spouse or partner and then their children. Most couples will have Wills leaving everything to each other and appointing the survivor of them as sole executor on the first death and then dividing their estate between their children on the survivor’s death. However, this structure is not appropriate in all circumstances, for example the couple may: ∞ have concerns about the survivor remarrying, having further children and then disinheriting the children they have between them. ∞ already have children from previous relationships. ∞ wish to build some Inheritance Tax and/or care fees planning provisions into their Wills. Your Wills can easily cater for all of the above scenarios but you need to take advice specific to your circumstances to make sure you get it right. do you want to appoint as the executor(s) of 3. Who your Will? – these will be the people responsible for carrying out the terms of your Will and administering your estate. This could be your spouse/partner and children if your children are adults. If your children are minors, you need to consider who will manage the children’s inheritance (trustees) until they reach an appropriate age. do you want to include as guardians for your 4. Who children? These will be the people responsible for the

daily care of your children if both you and their other parent die whilst they are under 18 years. It is not necessary for your executors and guardians to be the same people but it is helpful if they get on well as it is the trustees’ responsibility to make sure the guardians are not left out of pocket as a result of caring for your children.
5.
How do you wish to divide up your estate? In most cases, an equal split between children after the survivor’s death is appropriate but there may be reasons to deviate from equality if, for example, one of your children has benefited from gifts during their lifetime - you may wish those gifts to be brought into account when your estate is divided up after your death.
a Will is an ideal time to put your affairs in 6. Making order generally for example: ∞ checking ownership of property and making sure you know where deeds are kept ∞ putting nomination forms/expression of wishes in place regarding any pensions or death in service benefits ∞ reviewing investments and life insurance policies.

Getting onto the property ladder: help for first time buyers Home ownership may seem a far-off dream for some, but help is at hand. Paul Blaking, Mortgage Consultant at Ipswich Building Society, explains more.
We can also help people where their deposit is a gift from family members and other options include a shared ownership mortgage, a part-buy, part-rent scheme which can work out cheaper than private rental accommodation. Borrowers purchase part of the property with a mortgage, paying rent to the landlord or housing association on the remaining share and can gradually buy further shares to eventually own the home outright, if the lease allows.
For anyone thinking of buying their first property you could be forgiven for thinking it is an impossible task. According to the UK House Price Index in November 2018, the average price of a property increased by £7,000 in twelve months and industry group UK Finance reported the average age of a first time buyer was 30 years old.
There’s lots to think about when planning your first step on the housing ladder and, whatever your circumstances, it is important to get a mortgage that fits your own individual needs. At Ipswich Building Society we offer free, no-obligation mortgage advice through our team of Mortgage Consultants. If you’re looking for a mortgage with us we’ll do our best to find the right one for you.
But there is some good news! For example, at Ipswich Building Society we offer mortgages up to 95% Loan to Value (LTV), meaning you’ll need just a 5% deposit.
