The benefits of children continuing their studies throughout the summer By Kumon

The summer is the perfect time to develop and enhance your child's maths and English ability and strengthen their love of learning. A child's summer holidays are often jam-packed with energetic activities including bike rides, swimming, dancing and football, but it is important to keep their minds active too. Think about when you take a break from exercising your body; a few weeks off the treadmill and it seems so much steeper when you get back on! Your mind is much the same, it requires regular exercise to continue growing and developing. Ensuring your child continues educational activities throughout the summer holidays can mean they are confident, equipped and ready to tackle new work when they go back to school. Research spanning 100 years shows students typically score lower on standardised tests at the end of summer holidays than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer (White, 1906). How much more however, may well come as quite a surprise. Most students lose about two months of learning in mathematical skill over the summer months and more than two months in reading achievement compared to their peers who keep their brains active (Cooper, 1996).

As well as the 'lost summer months' it's common for teachers to spend at least a month re-teaching material students have forgotten over the holiday period. That month of re-teaching eliminates a month which could have been spent teaching new information and skills. Like musicians and athletes, maintaining practice levels is often key to high performance and achievement.

Making the most of the summer holidays without breaking the bank If you’re planning a stay-cation this year, there’s plenty to do around Suffolk to keep yourself and the kids occupied over the summer. The trouble is, how do you pay for it all? Saving for the summer holidays can be a tall order, especially when you’re expected to fill every waking moment with fun, games and exciting days out. On the days that are so long they seem to last forever, it’s tempting to start spending just to get out of the house. Fortunately, there are some

quick wins and smart decisions you can make to help those pennies stretch until September!

Save early and often Maybe not so helpful for this year - a little each month can go a long way. Saving just £20 a month from Christmas until the summer would net you a cool £140 to get the school holidays off to a flying start. Being just a little bit more prepared will help stave off a nasty shock when your September credit card statement lands on the mat.

Be one with nature If you’re going away but not wanting to venture far, why not rough it out a bit and try a camping trip for a few days? The gear will require a little investment but once you’ve got your tent you can re-use it for many happy years to come! As one of the most rural counties in England with beautiful coastlines, there’s plenty of places to hide away from it all or huddle around a campfire toasting marshmallows.

Eat smarter If you’re having a day out in the sun, save the pennies by taking a pack-up lunch rather than going straight for a hot dog and chips – you’ll be saving on calories as well as money, and next time you’ll have more to spend when you do actually need to. And remember, quick meals at the end of the day don’t come cheap either – try prepping a dinner in the morning or the night before so all you need to do is pop it in the oven when you get home.

Try setting them a budget and seeing what they can come up with – not only will you be building up their financial and budgeting skills, they’ll likely feel more involved as you’ve outsourced some of the responsibility to them. On-Call Firefighter On-call firefighters are a vital part of the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service. They provide an efficient, effective service that gives emergency cover across the country. In Suffolk, on-call firefighters make up 66% of the workforce and are generally located in rural communities, small towns and villages.

What are on-call firefighters? An on-call/part-time firefighter is a person who is ‘on call’ to respond to a range of emergencies. They are doing everyday jobs (for example, shop workers, office workers, mechanics, etc) until the call comes, then they become professional firefighters. Oncall firefighters do not just fight fires. On-call firefighters live or work within five to ten minutes of their allocated fire station. They are fully trained firefighters who are called into service when they are needed rather than staffing the fire stations on a full time basis. Most on-call firefighters have other employment and take on the role as a second job; however, you do not need to be in work to become an on-call firefighter.

You need to: n Be 18 years old or over. n Have a reasonable level of personal fitness. n Live or work within five to ten minutes of the fire station you provide cover to. n Be able to provide over 50 hours of on-call weekly cover. n Have permission to be released from your main employment to attend emergency incidents. n Have the ability to operate at heights and confined spaces. n Keep calm under pressure. n Work well in a team. n Have the ability to develop your skills and work independently.

REASONS TO TAKE ADVICE The Ministry of Justice released its quarterly Family Court Statistics for the period April to June 2018 and these showed an increase in the number of cases starting in Family Courts 7% up on April to June 2017. There was an 18% rise in the number of divorce applications issued over the same period in the previous year. More people than ever before are now self-representing in the Family Court.

Bites & Stings By Naomi Cooper

With Summer supposedly here, bites and stings are something that us parents need to be mindful off. Insect stings from a bee, wasp or hornet can be painful but are usually not dangerous. First there is a sharp pain, followed by mild swelling, redness and soreness. Sometimes they can cause the body to have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock), so it’s important to look out for this and get medical help quickly if necessary.

What to look for: 1. Redness 2. Swelling 3. Itchiness 4. Stinging pain

Water Safety Advice By Water Babies

We’re all dreaming of a long, hot summer. The swimming pool is one of the best places for you and your little one to cool down and have some fun together. Your baby doesn’t need to have had their immunisations before you go to the pool, but the water temperature should be at least 30° for a baby older than 12 weeks (or heavier than 12lbs), and above 32° if they’re younger or smaller. A question we’re often asked at this time of year is whether it’s safe to take your baby in the sea. While it’s too cold and salty for babies under 6 months, your older baby or toddler will love a splash in the surf! Just remember to stay in your depth, avoid inflatables, and keep hold of your little one at all times. While you’re both enjoying the water together, why not keep up the momentum and think about swimming lessons? Not only is it one of the best things you can do to bond with your little one, it also develops learning skills, boosts confidence, improves co-ordination and enhances wellbeing. What you need to do: 1. If you can see the sting, brush or scrape it off sideways using something like a bank card. (Don’t use tweezers to try and pull it out, or you could squeeze more poison into the wound). 2. Put an ice pack or something cold on the wound to reduce the swelling and raise the part of the body that’s affected. If the sting is in the mouth or throat, get them to suck an ice cube or sip cold water. 3. Keep checking the casualty’s breathing, and level of response. 4. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, such as breathing difficulties or reddened, swollen itchy skin, particularly to the face or neck, call 999 or 112 for emergency medical help. Fun for the whole Family at Easton Farm Park this Summer Easton Farm Park has a summer of fun up its country sleeves this year. As well as all their daily fun activities including pony rides, train rides, hug a bunny, egg collecting, tractor & trailer rides and more, they are throwing in some special events to sprinkle a little extra farm magic here and there.

DATES FOR THE DIARY Tractor Day on 14th July sees a lovely collection of vintage tractors huffing and tooting their way to the farm and then settling down for us all to look at and enjoy. Space Day on 21st July has been put together to help celebrate the 50 year anniversary of our arrival on the moon. Find out more in our planetarium and take a selfie with the Easton Farm Park rocket! Circus Weekend on 27th & 28th July promises a juggling act of ball, hoop and balancing skills, plus some Punch & Judy, puppets and magic to boot! There will be Fairies on the Farm on 6th August â€“ explore the enchanted fairy trail, craft a magical fairy door and build a sparkly fairy den Bring Your Dog Day on 17th August is an event Easton Farm Park are hosting with the Blue Cross. Lots of fun for our four-legged friends (water stations included!) The Bank Holiday sees their Superhero Day â€“ meet some of the real life superheroes and test your super muscles on the farm.

New for 2019... On top of all this, the farm is extending its campsite into the field next door with lovely big pitches in the countryside under our wonderful Suffolk skies, along with a state of the art shower and loo block. There are lots of different ways to get involved: Pick up a Parade Map (suggested donation £1) - this shows the locations of all the large Elmers and Learning Herds, and includes a checklist of all the large sculptures, so you can tick them off as you go. Grab a Learning Herd Guide (suggested donation £1) - on one side a super souvenir poster with pictures of all 84 young Elmers, on the other a listing to help you track down and record as many as you can. Play online – download the Elmer’s Big Parade Suffolk app from the App Store or Google Play for just £1.99. Enter the unique 4-digit codes to unlock sculptures or herds, looking out for a range of special rewards and offers as you go, only released when certain sculptures are unlocked! Slightly smaller than your average mammoth, Phil Daniels’ Woolmer-I-Am is a beautifully detailed dedication to it full-sized source of inspiration, Wool-I-Am, who currently resides at Ipswich Museum’s Victorian Natural History Gallery, along with gorillas, lions and giraffes! He even has his own set of tusks to protect the Buttermarket Centre throughout the trail!

Suffolk Masters, created by Emma Graham is a celebration of the work of some of the county’s finest artists including Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable and Maggi Hambling. It showcases the collection at Christchurch Mansion and Wolsey Art Gallery, home to the largest collection of Gainsboroughs and Constables outside London.
