September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Museum of East Anglian Life It’s the final countdown to the Photography Competition, being run by the Museum of East Anglian Life. They have seen some fantastic entries so far but there’s still time to get an entry in by your little ones for the Young Photographer category. With a digital camera to be won, as well as an awards ceremony for the best entries, hand the camera over to the kids and let them snap a picture of anything across their 75 acre site. Whether it’s a cheeky piggy picture or their favourite museum item, it’s a great opportunity to be creative whilst enjoying a day out to the Museum. Competition closes September 30th 2015. This October Half Term they have also got some fantastic activities to keep little ones amused. On Tuesday 27th October they have Sunny Snapshots drop in sessions. Grown-ups will enjoy a look at their current temporary exhibition ‘Edgelands’ a photography exhibition by Tom Owens, before the kids have a go at sun-printing their own images using photosensitive paper. The exhibition also has a special photobooth, grab a silly hat and pull a pose! On Thursday 29th October the Museum is holding a Shaun the Sheep day. Enjoy watching Shaun the Sheep shorts on the big screen and doing some sheepy activities. Newmarket Open Weekend 19th & 20th Sept The Betfair Newmarket Open Weekend is a fantastic opportunity to visit the town of Newmarket and go behind the scenes at Horse Racing’s HQ. During the Open Weekend you will get the chance to see some of the world’s best racehorses at Warren Hill Gallops and to visit a number of Newmarket’s finest equine sites. Come to the Rowley Mile for a jam packed afternoon of racing and on course entertainment. Both racegoers and food lovers alike are sure to be delighted at the inaugural Food and Drink Festival located at the course. By Ann Lay It was seven years ago when, as a first time mum, I was frustrated by how hit and miss it was to locate the vast array of services & support available locally for new mums. Often not hearing of help or support available until after it was needed, or a service that would have been great to try with my new baby. A few months later, I started my own business, Baby Senses, & wishing to promote the baby classes I offered, I realised the problem. There were no events solely promoting services & products for expectant and new mums. The Ipswich Baby Fair was born!

I never set up the baby fair to make a profit, merely to bring small, medium and large businesses and charities together under one roof with the one aim – to provide for the needs of expectant mums and new parents and their babies and toddlers. Therefore it made sense to team up with a charity each year to also help raise awareness and funds for their worthy cause. Over the last 6 years we have worked together with the National Childbirth Trust, East Anglia Children’s Hospice and this year Clic Sargent.

About CLIC Sargent
raising money for
CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families. Although CLIC Sargent’s services extend across the UK, the support provided to young cancer patients and their families is very much localised. The Service Team based in Ipswich and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals consists of specialist nurses, play specialists, social workers and youth workers who provide clinical, practical, financial and emotional support to help local children and young people cope with cancer and get the most out of life. In 2014, CLIC Sargent cared for 70 young cancer patients and their families from Suffolk and 69 from Norfolk. It costs CLIC Sargent around £3,750 to support each family through treatment and we rely solely on voluntary donations to be able to do this. The Ipswich Baby Fair has grown in size each year, both for stallholders and footfall with over 30 stalls last year and over 300 people attending. However, I am pleased to say that the event is still free to enter with lots of free taster sessions and children’s activities on the day to enjoy, making it a fun time for all. I am also proud of the fact that the stall prices have not increased either, this year to encourage even more new independent businesses we have added a small stall costing just £15, the standard remaining at £25 and a large at £35.

Your name: Stacey Bunn Name your employers: Ipswich Building Society How long has the business been running and the reason why you joined? Ipswich Building Society was founded in 1849, so has over 160 years of serving local communities throughout Suffolk. I joined in 2009 as a Customer Adviser based at the soon to be opened Sudbury branch. I had previously worked for a bank and was returning to work after maternity leave. The job was part time, so the perfect hours and perfect job for me to get back into work after having a baby. What do you enjoy about your role and working for this business? I loved working as a Customer Adviser in the Sudbury branch, and the Society is brilliant for helping you with progression as they enabled me to complete my NVQ Level 2 in Business Management. I then successfully applied for the position of Financial Education Assistant, and my first major project was to develop and launch Money Metrics, which was our own bespoke financial education programme for Year 10 students which relates to the National Curriculum. I also work with the Society’s existing Year 2 programme, called Money Days, and have implemented money management sessions for NEETS (Not in Education, Employment or Training) and at both HMP Highpoint and HMP Hollesley Bay as part of their reducing re-offending schemes.I have such variety in my job now, I am based in the Sudbury branch but often work from head office in Ipswich.
Ipswich Building Society is very flexible which is fantastic as being a working mum I need to be able to take my girls to and from school – and I am able to attend events such as sports days. What was the best piece of advice regarding work you were ever given? I can’t really think of any advice regarding work but I do really like this quote: “Success is not an accident; It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all. LOVE what you are doing”. What does the future hold for you / the business? I think financial education is so very important in schools, we have built up some really good relationships with the local schools and we aim to cover many more moving forward. My aim is to build on our already successful programme and keep it growing as the curriculum changes to make relevant for all students. Our target for delivering financial education is 950 hours per year so it is a major focus for Ipswich Building Society, and a big investment into the local community. How do you fit your work around family life? Being a working mum is very hard at times, for me to make it work I have to be very organised. I am very lucky to have a supportive family around me. It does really help to have a flexible and understanding company, but in return I try to be as flexible as I can. What advice would you give to any parents considering returning to work and/or starting up their own business? I would just say to make sure you are ready. I returned back to work when my girls were both 7 months old, whilst I don’t regret returning to work that early I do wish I had done fewer days just so I could enjoy the balance a little more - I went back 5 days a week, working 9am-3pm. So I would just say ease yourself back in slowly as your babies don’t stay babies for long so enjoy them as much as you can!

‘Baby Blues’ and Post Natal Depression

Most people are aware of ‘baby blues’ and post-natal depression when planning a family but what about when it actually happens to you? It’s an all too familiar and confusing story for many new parents. You were so happy to be pregnant, you thought everything would be perfect but then the baby arrives and you just don’t feel… right. You never expected to feel this way; anxious, hostile, angry, sad, terrified, alone. The good news is that you really aren’t alone. The Suffolk County Council Public Health team are promoting support available for women across Suffolk affected by feelings of mild to severe low mood both during pregnancy and after birth. We want you to know that #TalkingHelps and we encourage you to share your feelings.

that 1 in 10 mothers develop post-natal depression, a more serious form of the ‘baby blues’. An expected 620 new mothers in Suffolk per year will experience some form of depression after giving birth.
How to spot it
Unfamiliar feelings of anxiety and depression can often develop suddenly and range from mild to extremely severe, requiring different kinds of support or treatment.

Fresh Start – New Beginnings
There are lots of positive things you can do to keep your child safe
The Treatment Service for Child Sexual Abuse By Diana Porter Founder and Chief Executive of Fresh Start New Beginnings The very name of our centre often makes people cringe. People do not want to think about such things happening to children they would rather close their eyes and ears to it. I accept that it is one of a parent’s worst nightmares but it does happen. So we all need to look at ways to help these children heal and prevent other children being sexually abused. To abuse a child the abuser needs to get the child on their own. That is why 95% of sexually abused children know their abuser and most abusers come from within the family* As a parent you need to be vigilant as the abusers will groom the parents into trusting them first, it is only through you they can gain access to your child. Once gained, they can begin to work on the child, knowing the parent will not be looking out for anything suspicious. They will usually befriend the child, buy them treats, take an interest in their hobbies, make the child enjoy their company. They will manufacture situations where they can be alone with the child, a father can suggest the mother has the day shopping or at a spa, a relative/friend/neighbour can suggest they take the child out or offer to babysit. During any contact the abuser will be touching the child in what appears a casual way putting their arm around the child’s shoulder, hugging them, tickling them; getting the child used to being touched by them this will then progress to abusive touches and acts. The child feels trapped as they will have been made to feel special, received presents (bribes) and liked/loved the person so feel they must have encouraged the abuse; so it must be their fault. They will have been told that their parent knows about it and if anything is said the abuser will be put in prison and their family will be broken up.

This word can be used so that no-one else knows they are asking for help. • Teach your child the NSPCC underwear rule • Have boundaries and privacy within the home • Don’t allow adults or older children to use the toilet while a child is in a bath in the same room • Listen to your children. At Fresh Start - New Beginnings we have children referred to us by the Police, SARC’s, GP’s Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Social Services, Schools and other Charities. We will take a referral up to 18 years of age and work with them for as long as they need us. It is wonderful for us practitioners to see the difference that is made by the work we do. I remember one young girl who appeared so fragile just like a broken sparrow with her hood up and shoulders hunched she never gave any eye contact. For the first few sessions she just sat and cried and then gradually she began to talk. In the end she would come skipping in calling out ‘Hiya’. She went on to have a successful childhood. She will always be a victim and there will be times when she may need to pop in and see us again, we will be here for her. She has got the tools to cope with her future and her life will be good. Lets talk more about Child Sexual Abuse so that more children can come forward for help. Let’s all talk more about Keeping our Children Safe so we can stop it happening to other children. Gooseberry Planet: A berry big adventure
Did you know that 23% of 11 and 12 year olds with a social networking site profile say they have been upset by something on it over the last year. 8% of these felt upset or scared for weeks or months after the incident. In a ChildLine survey of 13-18 year olds: 60% said they had been asked for a sexual image or video of themselves. As a parent these statistics send chills down my spine, I can warn my children about the physical dangers such as crossing the road, not speaking to strangers etc etc but how do we arm our children with the knowledge to help them make the right choices when they’re online? Over the summer I have discovered Gooseberry Planet which is the first child focussed internet safety teaching tool, delivered via gamification. Stella James founder of Gooseberry Planet explains to us why Gooseberry Planet was created and the how this game could keep your children safe online.
Gooseberry Planet is the first child focussed internet safety teaching tool “A few years ago, I thought all I had to do to keep my kids safe online was set up the family computer and walk by every so often. Now, as they get older and technology advances, their online lives include WhatsApp, Facebook comments, BBM, Instagram, Snapchat, texts and occasional emails. And, all of a sudden, keeping them safe online seems a much bigger challenge. I worry they’re at risk of cyber bullying,
overexposure on social networks, and even sexual solicitation. When it comes to web safety for kids, bullying, in particular, is something I’m concerned about as I was picked on at school for three years by a group of children who abused me physically and verbally, so I know the trauma and deep upset it can cause. In 2013, I started looking around for ways to help my own children and those of my wider family stay safe online – ones they would realistically use. I soon got frustrated because I couldn’t find the kind of thing I had in my mind. I could track their activity but I wanted to do more than that – I wanted them to be aware Internet safety and of the dangers in the first place; to recognise the risks and to be more likely to make the right choices. I didn’t want to be a ‘helicopter mum’; I really wanted a way to teach them what to do themselves – rather than hovering over them all the time, watching what they did. There was only one solution: to come up with something. So I sat down one night last September determined to make a difference on web safety for kids. I started scribbling on a scrap of paper – and Gooseberry Planet was born. It does what, as a parent, I want it to do in terms of web safety for
kids – it gives children a fun way to learn as they play. It’s more than that though. I wanted to be involved in their learning journey so I created a parallel parent app that comes free with the game and that will help you to have meaningful conversations about child safety online’.

Raising the Bar Awards celebrate champions Suffolk’s shining lights in education have been celebrated at the Raising the Bar Awards 2015.
The awards recognised the winners and finalists in 20 categories and age groups including children and young people, teachers and support staff, as well as schools and education settings. The awards ceremony, at Ashlar House in Bury St Edmunds was hosted by Dave and Heidi from Heart Breakfast, and included a performance and inspiring speech from Suffolk soprano singer Laura Wright, as well as a video message from Ed Sheeran. The Fight Against Lice... As parents, we all hope that our children make new friends at school, there are however some little friends we hope they won’t be bringing home... Head lice!
Fact or Fiction Head lice are linked to poor hygiene? Fiction Poor hygiene or dirty hair does not increase the likelihood of getting head lice Head lice jump from head to head? Fiction Head lice crawl from one head to another when in close contact. It’s believed that up to 1 in 3 children in the UK may get head lice at some point during the year - particularly school children aged between four and 11 years old. Often referred to as ‘nits’, head lice are actually tiny insects which live in the roots of human hair. They feed off the blood from our scalps - but it isn’t their nibbling that makes you itch. The itching is actually caused by an allergy to head lice, which not everybody has - so your child may not even notice they are playing host to the unwanted pests! Regularly checking hair with a specially designed head lice comb can help detect early intruders and if you do spot any, there are plenty of treatments you can use to get rid of them. As well as the treatments available over the counter,

You must keep a child away from school during treatment? Fiction Head lice is not a reason to keep your child away from school, although you might want to let their friends parents know.

You’ve probably heard of Fairtrade. It’s been around in various forms for many years and its main aim is to ensure that the people who produce things for us are treated properly. Everyone likes a bargain but unfortunately the drive for cheaper and cheaper products has meant that the people at the beginning of the chain, the farmers, the pickers, the miners or the garment makers, aren’t being paid enough to live. Sometimes they are ‘bonded labour’ which is not far from slavery. Sometimes they are even children. We are so disconnected from the people who make things for us that it is easy to forget that they are real people going about their day-to-day lives with similar personalities and ups and downs as us. You will have seen the Fairtrade Mark on a number of products in the shops. The most popular of these are bananas, coffee, tea and chocolate but there are also Fairtrade spices, gold, sugar, flowers and even cotton. There are now 1210 Fairtrade certified producers in 74 different countries!
These producers benefit in a number of ways, including receiving a fair price (set by International Fairtrade bodies), decent working conditions and the Fairtrade premium. The premium is an amount of money paid to the community to improve life for the people of that area. The premium has been used locally to build schools, roads or even healthcare. If you see a product with this Mark on the packaging you will know that some of the ingredients have come from these producers and that you are directly helping to improve their lives. There are over 4500 different products available in the UK to choose from! Ipswich itself is a Fairtrade town and has a lovely Fairtrade shop full of beautiful cards, gifts and food and household supplies – well worth a visit! hOW TO GET INTO RUGBY UNION
If you enjoy being active and want to build your fitness and strength then this is the game for you. It’s one of the most inclusive sports around and there are various versions of the game that you can test out. You can just play touch rugby in the park with a bunch of friends or family, but joining a club can be inexpensive. From scrummaging to tackling, to sprinting with the ball, this can be a high intensity workout that will boost both your fitness and your strength. Work your way up. Start with a club then look to your county and from there people will start noticing you.

Suffolk has already played host to the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour, when Rugby’s greatest prize, the Webb Ellis Cup, visited the Prince Obolensky statue in Cromwell Square, Ipswich last month. Alexander Obolensky was a Russian Prince who represented England in Rugby Union. He became known as the “flying prince” after he scored two sensational tries on his international debut in 1936 when he helped England to their first victory over the New Zealand All Blacks. Sadly, he subsequently became the first of 111 rugby internationals to lose their lives during the Second World War when he was killed in a flying accident on landing his Hurricane at Martlesham Heath in 1940.
Most clubs will cater for all the family with kids’ teams, and men’s and women’s teams. Rugby union will teach you sportsmanship and teamwork like no other game. You’ll test yourself physically and create special bonds with your team mates. It’s a fantastic sport for developing all-round fitness as well as skills for life, especially teamwork.
TOUCh RUGBY
Played in much the same way as the Tag version, this is another non-contact game that removes elements like the scrum, the ruck and mauling. Tackles are replaced by touches, which must be below the waist. This is a great activity for people looking to keep fit while playing a game that is energetic and fun. It can also be played in mixed teams.

Rugby union is about more than players. The game cannot thrive without the army of coaches, referees and volunteers who give up their time week-in, week-out. Whether you have played in the past or just have a keen interest in developing talent, coaching opportunities are available in your area. TAG RUGBY
This is the non-contact version of the game. Instead of tackling, players have to grab tags attached to the ball carrier’s waist and shout “tag!”. The pressure is then on for the ball carrier - they then have 3 seconds to pass the ball or lose it. This is the version of the game played in the Under 7 and Under 8 age groups and is a fantastic way to introduce children to the game.

Sports centres and pools Don’t forget about the brilliant swimming lessons offered by Ipswich Borough Council and held at both Fore Street and Crown Pools. These lessons are generally a 10-week course, with each lesson being 30 minutes, once a week. They start from babies and go all the way through to adults. Their staff will discuss the best course for your child to start on if you’re not sure, plus they will offer you a free trial assessment to help you determine the right course. They also offer 1-2-1 lessons and many recreational courses as well as Swim Fit and there are courses held at the sports centres including archery, street dance, trampolining and gymnastics. Colchester Trampoline Park widens range of activities Jump Street, Colchester’s popular trampoline park, opened in June and has been greeted warmly by crowds of enthusiastic jumpers of all ages, including X Factor finalist Stevi Richie. Based in the Cowdray Centre in Colchester, Jump Street has already vastly exceeded the team’s anticipated number of customers and has had rave reviews on social media. The park was opened by Team GB Trampolinists Kat Driscoll & Joshua Newman as well as the Mayor of Colchester who put the 20,000 square foot park through its paces, wowing onlookers with impressive flips and routines. In the first month the park welcomed over 10,000 customers through its doors to enjoy the free-jump area, basketball nets, foam pit and dodgeball courts - and many more spectators to its mezzanine café which boasts barista coffee, a range of hot & cold snacks.
Visit Jumpsteet It costs £10 an hour although jumpers must also wear Jump Street non-slip socks which cost £1.75 but can be kept and reused on subsequent visits. Jumpers must be aged 5 and over. Group bookings of 10 people or more attract a 10% discount. Trained safety staff supervise the bounce area and spectators can watch from the café on the mezzanine floor which has free WiFi. Bookings for children’s parties are being taken from September when a whole range of fitness classes will also begin at Jump Street.
Benfits of Bouncing The health benefits of trampolining are well
documented. In fact, as early as 1980 NASA confirmed that 10 minutes bouncing on a trampoline is a more efficient cardiovascular workout than over 30 minutes of running. The report states that “for similar levels of heart rate and oxygen consumption, the magnitude of the biomechanical stimuli is greater with jumping on a trampoline than with running” Fittingly, Jump Street plans to expand the range of activities it offers in September by introducing a range of trampolinefocused classes. Although the finer details are still to be confirmed, the team has shared their intention to introduce group classes, to gauge popularity, in early September. The exact format and price is yet to be confirmed, although it is probable that from early September there will be morning classes three times a week. A spokesman for Jump Street said: “The benefits of trampolining for fitness are well documented and we want to make it easy and comfortable for people who want effective, low impact aerobic exercise to use our facilities to get fitter and have some fun. We have some excellent instructors lined up to deliver interesting and enjoyable classes for all ages so we can’t wait to get going in September.”
