Refurbished and reopened in 2023, Clapham Common's water play area is a seriously impressive setup. Spanning 535 square metres, it features forty multi-function water jets including water guns, tipping buckets, showers, soaking jets and fountains, plus interactive water pistols and twirly jets that kids absolutely love. Open from May to early September, this is one of the best free water play spots in SW London.

The John Madejski Garden sits in the central courtyard of the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington and is free to enter without visiting the museum. A stepped elliptical pool with gentle fountain jets is perfect for toddlers and younger children to cool their feet on a hot day and the surrounding Italianate architecture makes it feel like a hidden oasis. Running, splashing and swimming are not permitted, so expect a calm paddle rather than a full-on splash.
Cromwell Road, SW7 2RL
Hyde Park offers three great water play options. The Diana Memorial Fountain, 545 pieces of Cornish granite curving beside the Serpentine, invites toddlers to splash and wade in gently flowing water. There is wheelchair and pram access and lawns perfect for a picnic. The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Playground reopens this summer after renovation, with a redesigned Mermaid Fountain expanding its water and sand play area. Both the above options are free. The Serpentine Lido opens weekends from mid-May, then daily June to mid-September (charges apply). Its gated family area includes a chlorinated paddling pool, sandpit, swings, sun terrace and café.

The ultimate London water play experience on the South Bank! Danish artist Jeppe Hein's iconic interactive installation shoots jets of water high into the air, creating rooms that appear and vanish in seconds. For kids, it offers the chance to get as wet as possible, as often as possible! It’s free and open to all ages Wednesday to Sunday until 31 August. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Shoes are recommended. Riverside Terrace, Southbank Centre SE1 8XX
Wimbledon Park's free splash pad is one of the area's betterkept secrets. Six interactive paddling pools with jets, sprays and fountains keep children of all ages entertained, while the fenced perimeter and surrounding seating make it a particularly relaxed spot for families with toddlers. When the kids need a break, the wider park delivers too, with playgrounds, a lake, miniature golf and a café on site.

Three sets of water jets keep younger children and primary-age kids entertained, with a sandy play area right alongside for good measure. Open daily 10am to 6pm until 31 August, the park also offers a playground, café, open lawns and scenic riverside walks along the Thames. Fulham, SW6 6EA
Castlenau Recreation Ground is a small but well-loved residential park in Barnes with a paddling pool that proves hugely popular during the summer. Alongside the water, there are traditional and natural play facilities, a multi-use games area and an outdoor gym. Entry is free and the park is open daily from dawn until dusk. Barnes Avenue, Barnes SW13 9AA
Also referred to as the Rookery Paddling Pool, this historic community-run open water play area is situated at the top of Streatham Common. Spanning roughly 700 square metres, this fenced-off, family-friendly oasis features a large, shallow pool that is perfect for under 5s. The pool typically opens from 10am to 6pm (closed on Wednesdays) and is surrounded by plenty of grassy space, mature trees for natural shade, picnic tables and nearby toilets. The popular Rookery Cafe sits just opposite.

Some of the richest and most memorable learning happens beyond the classroom. While some children enjoy the structure of desks, carpet sessions and a teacher at the front, every child gains from opportunities to explore, move, talk, question and experience the world around them.
Furthermore, learning certainly does not have to stop when the school day ends. When children are given the chance to learn through life, nature, play and hands-on experiences, they often develop confidence, curiosity and a deeper understanding of what they are discovering.
The long summer holiday is the perfect time to experience education anywhere. A walk to the park, a trip to the supermarket, baking in the kitchen or helping to wash the car can all build valuable skills. When children are relaxed and engaged, they often absorb more than we realise. They are noticing, questioning, comparing, solving problems and making sense of the world around them.
Outdoor learning is a wonderful example of this. Many schools now use Forest School approaches to give children hands-on opportunities in natural spaces. In a woodland or garden, children can identify plants, compare leaves, search for minibeasts, spot seasonal change and talk about weather, habitats and growth. Physical development is supported through climbing, balancing and lifting. Language grows through conversation and storytelling. Maths appears naturally, as children count sticks, sort stones, measure puddles or notice patterns in petals and bark.
Some families enjoy creating themed weeks during the holidays and this can be a brilliant way to immerse children in a topic.
One week might be all about volcanoes. You could visit a museum together, get them to write to a volcanologist, build a volcano at home, read related books and create fact files or drawings inspired by what they have learned. This immersive approach allows children to deep dive into a subject and make links between reading, writing, speaking, science, art and research in a way that feels exciting rather than forced.
Learning beyond the classroom feels purposeful. Children can see why they are doing something. Reading a recipe helps make lunch. Counting coins matters because they are buying an ice

Themed weeks can turn a child’s interest into a real learning adventure.
One week might focus on minibeasts, space or oceans. Families can visit a museum, borrow books, create artwork, ask questions online or build something linked to the topic at home.
A themed week encourages children to explore one idea in depth and make links across reading, writing, science, art and discussion. Because the learning feels connected and exciting, children often stay curious for longer and remember far more of what they discover.

cream. Writing a list is important because the family needs to remember what to pack. These ordinary moments help children build confidence because the learning is immediate, useful and enjoyable.
We must also remember that life skills are an important part of learning outside the classroom. How do you catch a bus or a train? How do you read a timetable, buy a ticket and know when and then cook it safely? These experiences involve reading, sequencing, money skills, problem solving and independence. They also help children feel more capable in the world around them.
Children do not need expensive days out or perfectly planned activities. Some of the richest learning comes from simple, everyday routines. Gardening teaches patience, care and life cycles. Building a den develops teamwork, creativity and perseverance. A journey on public transport can spark conversations about directions, maps, numbers and the wider community.
Perhaps the most important thing adults can do is slow down and notice the learning already happening. Ask open questions. Wonder aloud. Give children time to think. Follow their interests, even if they seem small. When we value learning everywhere, children begin to see themselves as capable learners everywhere too.

opportunities of all.
Catching a bus or train teaches children how to read timetables, plan journeys and solve problems. Preparing dinner involves choosing a meal, writing a shopping list, comparing prices and cooking safely. These tasks build independence, confidence and resilience while also strengthening reading, maths and communication. When children are included in everyday routines, they begin to understand how the world works and feel more capable within it. That is powerful learning beyond the classroom.

New school food standards proposals in England are set to restrict high-sugar and deep-fried foods in a drive to tackle childhood obesity.
Schools would be barred from serving fried foods and from offering items such as sausage rolls and pizza on a daily basis. Desserts would also be limited. In their place, schools would be required to provide higher-fibre options, including wholemeal bread, brown pasta and rice, alongside a portion of vegetables or salad with every main meal.
One in three children leaves primary school overweight or obese and tooth decay linked to high-sugar diets is the leading cause of hospital admissions among children ages 5 to 9. The changes will be subject to consultation before being applied.

Parsons Green Prep (PGP) is delighted to introduce a new wraparound care provision, developed in response to the growing needs of the school’s community. This new provision recognises the fact that modern family life often requires flexibility and that many parents balance busy working schedules alongside parenting commitments.
PGP aims to provide a safe, nurturing and enriching environment beyond the standard school day, offering both support for parents and a positive, engaging experience for all pupils from Reception to Year 6.
Morning Care is available 8am to 8.30am (Mon-Fri), providing a gentle and positive start to the day; Focus Club (homework/structured tasks) is followed by Chill Club (games and socialising) from 3pm until 6pm (Mon-Thu).

The Roche School in Wandsworth resounded with rhythm and rhyme during its annual Poetry Week recently. From the youngest learners to confident Year 6s, the school community embraced creative workshops and writing challenges designed to make poetry accessible, fun and daring.
The highlight was undoubtedly the Poetry Recital Competition. While every participant showed courage and skill, the winner left the audience spellbound by reciting all nineteen stanzas of Tennyson’s The Lady of Shalott from memory.
This reminds us why we champion learning by heart. Michael Rosen says that memorising a poem allows a child to ‘own’ it. Far from being a rote exercise, it is a workout for cognitive development, sharpening focus and building sophisticated language.
At The Roche School, teachers never put a ceiling on what pupils can do. By aiming high and providing encouragement, they see children conquer ‘impossible’ challenges daily.

The world our children are growing up in is changing rapidly. Advances in technology, artificial intelligence and global connectivity are transforming the skills young people will need to succeed. While academic achievement remains essential, schools must also prepare children to think creatively, communicate confidently and adapt to an increasingly interconnected world.
At Shaftesbury Park Primary School, this belief underpins a distinctive bilingual and enterprise-rich curriculum. The school believes that preparing children for the future means giving them opportunities to develop not only knowledge but also the confidence, resilience and global awareness that will help them thrive throughout their lives.
Shaftesbury Park’s bilingual approach encourages children to become confident communicators while developing an understanding of different cultures and perspectives. Learning through more than one language supports communication, problem-solving and cognitive flexibility – skills that are increasingly valued in a global society.
This innovative work has attracted recognition beyond the local community. Most recently, University College London and the British

Council invited the school to contribute to research exploring curriculum design and teacher training for Modern Foreign Languages. Their interest reflects the growing importance of innovative approaches to language learning in primary education.
Alongside bilingual learning, enterprise education is embedded throughout the curriculum. Through real-world projects and meaningful learning experiences, pupils develop creativity, teamwork, leadership and

problem-solving skills. These experiences help children understand how their learning connects to the wider world and encourage them to become confident, independent learners.
The impact of this work is increasingly recognised internationally. Earlier this year, the school welcomed a delegation of educators from the Czech Republic who visited Shaftesbury Park to learn more about its enterprise programmes and see first-hand how these approaches are enhancing outcomes for pupils.
While the school is proud of this recognition, what matters most is the difference it makes to the children in the classroom every day. By combining academic excellence with bilingual learning, enterprise education and a global outlook, pupils are supported to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need not only to succeed in the future but to help shape it.

For families choosing a first school, the questions that matter most are rarely about a single year. Parents want to know whether a school will carry their child the whole way: from the first morning in Nursery to the confident stride into senior education. At Streatham & Clapham Prep School (SCPS), that long view shapes everything.

It begins with its school-based Nursery: the youngest children are part of school life from the very start, so the transition into Reception and Prep is not a leap into the unknown. They already know the corridors, the faces and the rhythms of the day. They have shared assemblies, watched older girls at play and absorbed the quiet message that they belong, this sense of belonging rooted in the shared values of kindness, compassion, integrity and respect that run through every part of school life. By the time formal learning begins, school already feels like home. This continuity removes the anxiety that so often accompanies early transitions and lets children settle quickly and happily.
That same principle of preparation runs all the way through to the move into senior school. Throughout the year, Prep pupils have meaningful touch points with the Senior School and older girls through academic partnership opportunities such as Kinza, where Sixth Form students visit the Prep to work alongside younger pupils. These connections make the senior phase familiar long before the move itself.
SCPS is deliberate about building independence, resilience and academic confidence year on year so that the step up at age 11 feels like a

natural progression rather than a sudden change. Girls leave the Prep School ready not only to meet the demands of a senior curriculum but to seek out opportunity and lead. The school’s recent parent survey reflects this: 94% of parents agree their child is well prepared for the next stage of their education.
A central part of that preparation is the school’s new Fearless Futures programme, launching across the Prep School in September. Built around eight strands spanning financial literacy, sustainability, leadership, expressive arts, resilience, STEAM and an understanding of the wider world, Fearless Futures extends the curriculum beyond the conventional. Children take ownership of their progress through a personal passport, earning recognition as they complete challenges that stretch their thinking and broaden their horizons. The programme deliberately develops the

very qualities that senior education and adult life reward: curiosity, adaptability and the confidence to take on something new.
Just as important as the academic pathway is the school’s commitment to every child within it. Inclusion is a core priority, not an afterthought. The approach to SEND is built on the belief that neurodiverse children should be supported to thrive within a mainstream setting, not at its edges. SCPS is continually developing its practice, exploring sustainable and innovative ways to ensure that support is woven into everyday teaching rather than bolted on. The results speak for themselves: in the school’s most recent parent survey, every single parent of a child with SEND agreed that the school supports their child well. For a school of its size, that complete confidence is a source of real pride and a standard it is determined to maintain.
What ties all of this together is a simple idea. A child's education should feel like one continuous journey, carefully designed, with each stage building purposefully on the last. From a Nursery that opens the door to school life, through a Prep curriculum that dares children to be fearless, to a senior phase they enter ready and assured, SCPS offers a pathway rather than a series of disconnected steps.
For families beginning to think about where their child will grow up, that matters. Choosing a school is choosing a direction. SCPS warmly encourages any family considering the years ahead to come and see how a thoughtful, joined-up education can give a child the confidence to flourish at every stage and the courage to look forward to whatever comes next.

Whether your child is starting school for the very first time or moving somewhere new, preparation isn’t about getting everything perfect, it’s about helping them feel secure. Advice about uniforms, routines and packed lunches is familiar, however there are some less obvious ways parents can help their children feel ready for change.

Starting school for the first time
Practise ‘micro-independence’
Rather than focusing only on big milestones like using the toilet or writing their name, build independence in small, everyday ways. Encourage your child to open snack packets, put on their own coat or ask for help from another adult. These tiny victories make a big difference in a classroom.
Talk about feelings in advance (not just fun)
Instead of only emphasising excitement, gently introduce the idea that it’s okay to feel nervous, shy or even a bit cross. Giving children language for these emotions helps them cope when they arise.
Create a ‘goodbye ritual’
Ritual can be a powerful tool in helping children feel secure at the start of the day. A predictable routine such as a special phrase, a quick hug, a high-five or a wave at the window helps create a clear and reassuring transition between home and school. The key is consistency, so your child can rely on it.
Over time, this small moment of connection builds emotional security and can significantly reduce separation anxiety.
Build stamina for the school day
School is tiring. In the weeks before term, gradually introduce longer periods of activity followed by rest, mirroring the rhythm of a school day. This helps avoid overwhelm in those first few weeks.
Use stories to rehearse scenarios
Use books and role play games to explore situations like making friends, asking to go to the toilet or what happens if something goes wrong. Children absorb these scripts naturally through play.
Focus on continuity
Help your child identify what will stay the same - their interests, favourite hobbies, family routines. This reinforces the idea that school is just one part of their life and not the be all and end all, making the transition feel less like a complete upheaval.
Make the unfamiliar feel familiar
Walk or drive the journey to school or look at photos of it online. Even small details like knowing where the toilets are can reduce first-day anxiety. It’s tempting to tell children everything at once but too much detail can increase anxiety. Offer information in small, manageable chunks and answer questions as they come.
Encourage ‘bridge friendships’
If your child knows even one person at the new school, help nurture that connection over the summer. Even if that friendship doesn’t last beyond the first few weeks, it can be really helpful in calming those nerves in the build up to starting school and during those first few days of term.
Make a mini break time plan
Keep expectations small by putting in place Just One Plan: smile at one person, talk to one new person and learn one new name. Encourage your child to look out for games that are easy to join, such as football or tag, which naturally welcome new players. These simple strategies give children a sense of control and make break times feel far less daunting. Before term starts, help them practise an easy ‘first hello’ such as: ‘Can I join in?’ or ‘What are you playing?’ so they have some words ready to fall back on.
Find your tribe
Joining clubs can make a massive difference when children start a new school. It’s often easier to make new friends outside the classroom in an environment that’s more about having fun than sitting still and listening to the teacher. Activities with other kids who have similar interests create a sense of belonging. Ultimately, it can help children settle more quickly, by making them feel comfortable and connected.

In 2025, the NHS Digital survey revealed a stark reality: more than one in six children and young people aged 7 to 16 now have a probable mental health disorder. This figure, up from one in nine just a few years ago, translates to five children in every classroom of thirty, each navigating a complex internal world of anxiety, depression or other debilitating conditions.

The picture has never been starker and schools have a key part to play both in terms of prevention and providing expert support. The past twenty years have seen schools evolve from places where it was ‘brain first’ to spaces where body and mind are recognised as needing equal developmental attention.
Before anything else, a school should be a centre for care. Pastoral care encompasses a wide range of initiatives and approaches. A good primary or prep school will embed pastoral care into all it does within the culture of the school: how it teaches, how it protects, how it listens and how it learns. A pastorally strong school is in the best position to thrive academically.
When they experience anxiety, children can’t access learning, making it crucial that all schools have a robust pastoral care system to support pupils’ development. Simple measures like buddy benches, mindfulness lessons and worry boxes or mood charts are now widely offered and can make a big difference. Animals are good too. Some schools have a therapy dog and even class pets like goldfish or hamsters can help children open up.
A common thread running through primary and prep schools with a strong pastoral offering seems to be plentiful opportunities for fresh air, physical exercise and being in nature. Even in some most space-pressed inner-city
schools, children are cultivating a mini allotment or growing sunflowers in the playground. Similarly, Forest Schools offering regular outdoor hands-on learning sessions in natural environments are building young children’s confidence and self-esteem.
Extra-curricular activities also play a role, fostering social engagement, personal development and a sense of belonging among pupils. An inclusive sporting ethos is often front and centre in schools with good pastoral care, particularly in the co-curricular timetable. However, do look for schools that offer a wide selection of clubs which appeal to all kinds of interests beyond sport too.
Amanda Childs, Chair of the Independent Association of Prep Schools Pastoral and Wellbeing Committee (IAPS) adds: ‘Pastoral care is more than formal PSHE lessons. It incorporates every interaction an individual has in school; from the moment they arrive until they leave. It is about a genuine, positive culture, having excellent role models and high expectations, balanced with a kind and realistic view of the support any individual child needs to succeed - and that will be different for every single child.’
Central to a robust pastoral approach is staff fully trained in mental health first aid and safeguarding. This also includes the non-teaching staff that children often seek out to talk to such
as school nurses, lunchtime and office staff. Sometimes the support offered will be a listening ear, at other times, children might require signposting to additional support. The more mentally healthy schools usually have a school nurse, mental health support teams and even dedicated counselling.
For Dean Taylor, Associate Headteacher at Seven Kings School, a co-ed state school for ages 4 to 18 in east London, it’s the relationship between staff and pupils that holds the key to positive mental health in schools. ‘The ethos is more important than anything and you can walk around this school and see that it’s inclusive, friendly, safe and with clear and consistent boundaries’ Dean says.
Seven Kings pays particular attention to pressure points and makes sure every child has a trusted adult. There’s a joined-up approach with the SENCO too, in the knowledge that youngsters with conditions such as ADHD and autism can be particularly at risk of mental health problems. ‘The most vulnerable pupils have a one-page profile that’s shared with all staff’ adds Dean.
Finally, successful pastoral care involves the school, the child and their parents. Starting school is a huge milestone for the whole family and a carefully managed transition makes for a smoother pastoral pathway right from the start. Likewise, primary and prep schools with good pastoral provision work closely with secondary and senior schools in Year 6 to ensure a seamless transition to the next stage of education.
Good schools take the time to get to really get to know a child personally; what they like or don’t like and what they are interested in. Schools where pastoral care is foregrounded will extend their offerings to parents too. They might offer useful parent talks, for instance, on safe use of technology and share wellbeing resources. Crucially, these schools will have the confidence to collaborate with parents in robust and trusting ways.

When Abacus Ark was opened in Earlsfield, the vision of Anthony Ioannou, founder and CEO, was to create more than just a childcare setting. ‘I wanted to build a place where children felt genuinely known, where families felt supported and where learning inspired confidence, independence and curiosity from the very beginning’ he says.
Over the years, the response from local families has shown that there is a growing demand for early years education that combines warmth and care with real ambition for children's development.

setting has been thoughtfully designed around the belief that the environment itself plays an important role in a child's learning journey.
Now Abacus Ark Nursery Schools is delighted to share that it will soon be opening a brand-new nursery in Southfields.
Located at 91–93 Pirbright Road, SW18, just moments from Southfields Underground Station and beside Coronation Gardens, this newest
The nursery will feature calm, nurturing learning spaces alongside three dedicated outdoor garden areas designed to encourage creativity, confidence and exploration throughout the day.
Abacus Ark believes that the early years lay the foundations not only for
school readiness, but for life. Through its FIRST Steps Curriculum, the focus is on developing confidence, resilience, independence and social understanding, while nurturing a genuine love of learning.
As a family-run organisation rooted in the local community, the team at Abacus Ark understands how important it is for parents to feel reassured that their children are happy, safe and thriving. Building strong relationships with families and creating a true sense of belonging has always been central to the nursery’s approach.
The Southfields nursery is due to open in early 2027 and registrations are now open. Abacus Ark is looking forward to welcoming new families into its growing community.

The way we talk about potty training really does matter. Soft, encouraging language can turn it into something positive rather than something that feels pressured or rushed. Simple phrases like: ‘Shall we sit on the potty before bed?’ or ‘Let’s give it a try together’ feel very different from instructions or demands. They help keep the experience calm, gentle and supportive, which makes it easier for your child to relax and engage.
Consistency also plays an important role. Regular routines such as sitting on the potty after meals or before leaving the house help your child know what to expect. Having a rhythm can make the whole process feel like just another part of the day. Some families also find simple distraction ideas helpful, such as bubbles or a toy, which can encourage children to sit for a little longer without pressure, making the moment feel more natural and unforced.
your child that learning doesn’t have to be perfect to be progress.
It’s worth remembering that big changes in a child’s life can affect how ready they feel. Things like starting childcare, moving house or welcoming a new sibling can all make them need a little more time and reassurance. During these moments, slowing down isn’t a setback; it’s simply responding with care to what they need.

Alongside consistency comes encouragement. Celebrating small wins can make a big difference to how your child feels. Whether they sit on the potty, tell you they need to go or simply try, those moments are worth recognising. A warm: ‘Well done for trying!’ or ‘I’m really proud of you’ helps build their confidence and keeps the experience positive. It’s not about big rewards or pressure but about gently noticing effort and progress as they happen. Little prizes also can encourage the process.
Of course, accidents will happen. They are a completely normal part of learning and not something to worry about. Staying calm in those moments
helps your child feel safe and supported rather than embarrassed or upset. A simple, reassuring response like: ‘That’s okay, we’ll try again next time’ can make all the difference. When children feel understood rather than corrected, they’re much more likely to keep trying without fear or resistance.
Routine can be helpful, especially around key times like waking up, before going out or after meals. But flexibility is just as important. Some days will feel easier than others and that’s normal. Potty training is rarely a straight path and giving space for those ups and downs helps reduce stress for both you and your child. Keeping things relaxed also reminds

You will often discover what works best for your little one through gentle trial and time. Every child is different and there is no single right way or fixed timeline. What matters most is that they feel safe, supported and understood throughout the process.
Potty training is not just about learning a new skill but about building confidence, independence and trust. When children feel that you are on their side, patient, encouraging and calm, they are far more likely to feel happy in trying. And when the consistency and patience is there, progress tends to come naturally in its own time.
Amanda Jenner is a Child and Behavioural Expert, ITV Toddler Expert and author of Magic Milestones: Ready for my Potty, published by Simon & Schuster Children’s Books.

When Ofsted called to say it was on its way, there was an unexpected reaction at Sheen Montessori Nursery: excitement. No frantic preparations, just a nursery team eager to showcase the care, learning and relationships that define it.
This was Sheen Montessori Nursery’s first inspection under Ofsted's new framework Gone are the single-word judgements, replaced by an assessment of six areas of practice, alongside a narrative capturing what it is truly like to be a child in the setting.
The team’s approach was simple: change nothing. They carried on as normal. Most importantly, staff let the children lead. What stood out to the inspector was how confidently they welcomed her, smiling, curious and completely at ease, secure in a place where they feel they belong.
The result was Strong Standard across all six areas but the most treasured words for the nursery team were: ‘Children thrive and are happy in this warm and very welcoming setting.’

The government has issued its first evidence-backed guidance on screen time for young children, recommending that those under age 5 should be limited to just one hour a day. For children under age 2, the advice is even stricter: they should not be watching screens alone at all.
Parents are encouraged to avoid fast-paced videos and, where possible, use screens together with their children. The guidance also suggests ‘screen swaps’ like replacing screens with story time or simple games during meals.
Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson said the advice takes a precautionary approach, as the impact of screens on young children is still not fully understood. The guidance will be updated as more research becomes available.

Think seasonal this August and use fresh corn for this pasta dish. Whizzing up the corn results in a sauce that is rich and creamy, without any actual cream!
Ingredients
• 350g farfalle (or similar) pasta
• 4 Essential Sweetcorn cobs
• 30g unsalted butter
• 1 clove/s clove garlic, crushed
• 6 salad onions, chopped (white and green parts separated)
• 1 tsp sweet smoked paprika
• ½ tsp fine sea salt
• 100g pecorino (or Parmigiano Reggiano), grated
• 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to serve
• 200g cherry tomatoes
• 25g pack basil, ¾ leaves chopped
• 1 unwaxed lemon, zested then cut into wedges
Method
Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Cook the pasta for 11 minutes, until just cooked but still retaining a bite. Drain over a bowl, reserving the cooking water.
Meanwhile, stand the corn cobs upright on a sturdy board and use a sharp knife to slice off the kernels; set aside. Put the butter in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the garlic and onion whites; fry for 2 minutes. Add the paprika, ¼ tsp salt and some ground black pepper; cook for 1 minute. Add ¾ of the corn and 120ml pasta water; bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, until tender. Stir in 70g cheese, transfer to a large bowl and, using a hand-held blender or masher, whizz (or mash) until smooth.
Wipe out the pan, add the oil and set over a medium-high heat. Add the

remaining corn, the onion greens, tomatoes, remaining ¼ tsp salt and some black pepper. Fry for 5 minutes, shaking the pan often, until starting to char. Return the puréed corn and pasta to the pan; mix. Stir in the chopped basil and lemon zest.
Serve with the remaining cheese, basil leaves and a drizzle of olive oil on top, with lemon wedges for squeezing.
