News & Views Take the summer reading challenge Children's reading can take a dip during the long summer holidays, so why not take part in this year's Summer Reading Challenge? The challenge is open to children of all ages - Enter the Mythical Maze, if you dare! Collect stickers for each book you read and navigate your way around the labyrinth of fantastical creatures. When you complete the challenge, by reading 6 books, you will be invited to a winners event where you will collect your certificate and medal. And it’s not just about books - our libraries have lots of special activities and craft sessions throughout the summer. Portsmouth City Council Libraries are also looking for summer reading volunteers aged 12-19 to assist with children in our local libraries - a great way to share your love of reading. Arts & craft stalls, buskers and performers now welcome on Southsea Seafront Portsmouth City Council Seafront Services have advised that people selling home-made goods – arts and crafts - can now trade on Southsea Seafront free of charge. The opportunity is open seven days a week from 10am until 8pm. Street Performers (non-music) may also perform along the promenade to utilise the area between the Pyramids and South Parade Pier, so long as they do not obstruct other users in any way. Buskers no longer require any license/permission from Portsmouth City Council and are also welcome. Nick Courtney, who initiated the Facebook page ‘The peoples plan for Southsea’ which has been working for over a year now discussing potential ideas for improving Southsea, said ‘this is an amazing opportunity to liven up Southsea Seafront and I would like to thank Portsmouth City Council Seafront Services and the members of the group for their ideas and suggestions, many of which are still being discussed and hopefully will also be enabled in the near future.’ There are certain rules regarding this new opportunity, so please contact Nick Courtney on 07952 967948 with any questions, or post a question in the relevant section on the ‘The Peoples plan for Southsea’ facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/thepeoplesplanforsouthsea

Hampshire children need foster carers “We foster because we really enjoy providing a happy and nurturing home for a child to welcome them, help them to feel safe and part of our team”. These are the words of Jules and Stephen from Hampshire who have been fostering for just over three years. In this time they have looked after seven children, the eldest being 13 years old and the youngest just four days old. “Fostering can make a hugely positive change for the better for a child but it's also great fun and learning not just for the children but for us and our family too,” continues Jules. “Our own children are great role models and for us being a foster family is really a family affair.” Hampshire Fostercare has a range of fostering opportunities, both short and longer term. We offer an excellent package of training before and after approval, and regular on-going support to people interested in becoming foster carers. We are currently particularly looking for homes for older children and teenagers, children with disabilities or special needs and sibling groups.

Water Safety
Before children, going on holiday was a very different experience. Gone are the days of relaxing care free by the pool, cocktail in one hand, book in the other. Now we have to keep a constant eye on our children, which can prove difficult as they zoom off in different directions! Accidents do happen, but here are some suggestions to avoid the worst.

When you arrive spend some time checking out the facilities straight away – Could a toddler squeeze between the bars or climb over the edge of the balcony? Are there gaps in the fence around the hotel or pool? Find out where the fire escapes are and any meeting points. Go for a walk around the pool, beach, lake or river, looking for any hazards, such as rocks, and where the emergency equipment is. Ask if there is a lifeguard on duty at the pool. Remember, a pool attendant isn’t the same as a lifeguard and might not have the same qualifications. It’s worth evaluating your own ability to help if there’s an accident. Think about your first aid and resuscitation skills. Consider taking a first aid course before you leave. Find advice on the St Johns Ambulance website on www.sja.org.uk

If you’re renting a villa with a pool, make sure your child can’t wander outside unsupervised, particularly before you’re awake in the morning. If you can’t stop them going outside, nominate an adult to be a “lifeguard” by the pool at all times.
Inflatables are not a substitute for supervision. ‘‘My son was wearing arm bands and a rubber ring when he tipped forward while in the pool. His face was submerged and because of the angle of the rubber ring, he was unable to pull himself back upright. Luckily we saw it happen and were straight in to rescue him, but it just proves that even when you think they are safe, something can still go wrong’’. Don’t let your children swim alone, even if you think they are a strong swimmer. Don’t let them dive or jump into unknown depths of water. Read the water safety information signs at the beach, and ask a lifeguard or tourist information officer where the safest area to swim is. Ask whether there are any dangerous currents or tides in the sea.

Remember, a significant number of holiday drowning’s are reported to happen on the first or the last day of the holiday. Parents may be less attentive because of distractions on arrival and when packing to go home.

Family health Avoidance Avoiding the allergen can help (i.e. mattress covers, removing the pet, or staying indoors) can help but this is not always practical and usually not enough on its own.
Medication Daily antihistamines can be taken all year round, but make sure it’s a non-sleepy one as some (like Piriton) can affect school performance. They can be taken all year round. Next step up is nasal steroids and newer ones are much safer. Use them every day when you have symptoms and point spray to the outside of the nose and no HARD sniffing, keep the medicine in the nose to work at least 10 minutes.

If you are averse to medication for children or are pregnant, purchasing a good quality air purifier can be really beneficial in alleviating symptoms inside your home all year round. They can also be useful for removing food odours, cigarette smoke and airborne bacteria.
Alleviating the symptoms
Hay fever (Seasonal allergic rhinitis) is on the increase and can affect children of any age, and it's more likely in a child who’s had eczema, food allergy or asthma. The classic symptoms to look out for are an itchy nose, red eyes, watery discharge from nose or eyes or a blocked nose. Seasonal hay fever is due to pollens – usually tree pollen in the spring, grass pollen in summer and moulds in the winter. But all year long, allergic rhinitis can also be due to house dust mites or pet hairs. And the best way to find the cause is by allergy testing which your GP should offer. This is particularly important because allergic rhinitis can affect sleep, concentration and the symptoms can lead to embarrassment, wheezy chests and a drop in exam grades at school. With the right treatment it can be well controlled in the majority of children. For lots of useful information on allergic rhinitus and other allergies visit www.allergyuk.org
Cleaning your nasal passages
Regularly cleaning your nasal passages (known as nasal douching or irrigation) with a salt water solution can also help by keeping your nose free of irritants. Trying to get a child to perform this may provide more stress than benefit! It could however be a useful treatment for willing adults. You can find advice on how to do this on the NHS website by searching ‘Treating allergic rhinitis’.

Immunotherapy In very severe cases, Immunotherapy can be helpful. Immunotherapy involves gradually introducing more and more of the allergen into your body to make your immune system less sensitive to it. However, Immunotherapy is controversial and must only be carried out under the close supervision of a specially trained doctor because there is a risk it may cause a serious allergic reaction.

Bumper Guide to the Summer
Summer is a great time to enjoy being together with your family. But these days, even together time is often dominated by mobile phones, tablets, TV and the like. According to a recent survey though, even kids themselves recognise the need to unplug and welcome the chance to ‘do something different’. Saturn, Lord of the Rings

In July 2004, after a 7-year journey, a huge robot spacecraft - named Cassini - entered orbit around the ringed planet, Saturn. Since then, Cassini has sent back numerous spectacular images of the planet, its rings and moons, and has made many unexpected discoveries. All the bustle and excitement of a traditional Steam Festival, with full-size and model steam engines on display and working around the site. Vintage & commercial vehicles, classic cars and living wagons will be on show, alongside working steamrollers, steam lorries, model boats and miniature railways. Take a ride on the ever-popular steam-powered carousel gallopers and visit the traditional vintage fair.
