News Deepdene Trail Opens
Polarn O. Pyret Make Clothes for Kids!
September 10th sees the long awaited opening of the Deepdene Trail in Dorking - a heritage trail around the grounds of Deepdene Estate, an easy walk from the town centre and train station.
After the recent furore about Gap’s gender stereotyping ad campaign, it’s nice to see a company making clothes for kids, regardless of gender. Welcome Polarn O.Pyret!
The site has been rediscovered and restored for visitors, with help from a £1m heritage lottery grant and assistance from Kuoni, The Mausolea & Monuments Trust, Dorking Museum, Kuoni, Dorking Golf Club, Surrey Wildlife Trust, the Friends of Deepdene and Martin Higgins, owner of Betchworth Castle.
Scandinavians are renowned for their functional design and progressive social attitudes. The top four ranking countries for gender equality are all Scandinavian. So how does this translate into clothing for babies and children? Leading childrenswear brand, Polarn O. Pyret of Sweden, have been designing unisex clothing for over 40 years with a philosophy to ‘let children be children’.
The former home of Regency designer Thomas Hope, the house and gardens were destroyed in the 20th Century, taking with it hidden architectural treasures such as the Hope Mausoleum, the Embattled Tower and Bronze Age Barrows. An army of volunteers have been working to restore and open the estate to the public, with the aim to engage the local community to take part in projects and wildlife events at the site. It’ll make a brilliant family day out with lots to explore, including castle ruins and wonderful woodland and views, so don your wellies and head down to Deepdene for the grand opening. Reigate & Banstead Borough Council are currently in the middle of a public consultation on their Development Management Plan – giving you, the resident and business owners of the borough, a chance to have your say on plans for new housing, parking, retail, employment and green space.

Cllr Tony Schofield, Executive Member for Planning Policy, said: “Having a Local Plan in place will provide greater local control over where development goes. It will help make sure that the need to provide new housing and grow the economy is balanced against protecting the local environment and providing infrastructure and services. In our plan, new development will be provided in urban areas as a priority.’ The consultation document also identifies two potential sites for much needed new primary schools in Redhill and a new healthcare facility. The consultation is open until Oct 10th and you can register your comments and interest by visiting reigate-banstead.gov.uk/dmp or in person at the Town Hall in Reigate. There are also a series of drop-in sessions planned, where you can chat with Council staff about the plans. See website for further info.
Heritage Open Days This September you’ll get a chance to explore behind the scenes of your local historical buildings and museums, as part of Heritage Open Days from 8-11th September. This year’s theme is ‘Lives and Landscapes’ and there are lots of place to visit including Betchworth Castle, Reigate Town Hall dressed in its 1901 regalia, Holmesdale Natural History Club and Carshalton Watertower. News How Families Spend Quality Time Revealed Forget leisurely walks, visiting family members or going to the cinema... New research reveals when it comes to spending time with family; watching television is the top activity enjoyed by British families! We commissioned a study of 1000 parents and found that almost half of British families spend up to 47 hours a week watching TV together – despite only having 40 minutes of ‘quality family time’ to share each day. Over half of those questioned (58%) described themselves as working parents/carers with many citing working late as one of the biggest barriers to spending time with their children. 35% find
themselves working late into the evening to ‘catch up’ or to deal with personal finances. Interestingly, despite the busy schedules, almost half of families (46%) find the time to sit down to eat with each other, doing so for between 5 and 17 hours a week. Adoption Week 2016 What do Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela and Steve Jobs all have in common? Aside from being renown international personalities, you might be surprised to know that they were all adopted as children. It is annual Adoption Week from 17th-23rd October, focusing on raising awareness of adoption via the #SupportAdoption hashtag. Adoption is open to everybody, whether you are single, married, lesbian, gay or transgender, religious or atheist, homeowner, renter, employed or on benefits. If you can provide love, time, stability and commitment to a child you can contact First4Adoption to find your nearest agency.

Doing It For The Kids: Humphrey’s Pyjama Week Returns! Humphrey’s Pyjama Week returns from 3rd-7th October – with a chance for nurseries, playgroups, primary schools and mother & toddler groups to get their pjs on and raise money for The Children’s Trust. For a voluntary donation of £2, youngsters, staff and parents can wear their favourite pyjamas for one day during the week and organise themed events, such as best dressed competitions and slumber party games. Money raised will go towards research, rehabilitation, care and support for children with brain injury and their families.

Do you sew? Families was super excited to discover that the brand new Reigate School of Sewing is launching this September. The brainchild of three professional seamstresses, with backgrounds in corsetry, bridalwear and high street fashion, the school will hold day courses and evening classes in a range of sewing techniques. Day courses have more specific themes, such as corsetry or formal shirtmaking (and hen parties!). Evening classes are a mixed ability group with ongoing projects. Affordable Antenatal If you’re due a baby soon and live in the Dorking/Leatherhead are, then you might want to check out the new NCT Essentials classes, launching in October. Taking place at The Dell in Ashtead, this is a shorter, more affordable course designed to meet the needs of busy parents and those on a budget. The charity wants to reach out to parents in new areas, whatever their background or income, so the new classes will be more structured than traditional NCT courses, and are designed to equip new parents with important information and tips for early parenting. NCT (Natural Childbirth Trust) currently supports around 100,000 parents a year and, as the birth rate in the UK continues to rise, it aims to reach 20 million parents by 2020. Education Top Tips for Choosing an Independent School Firstly, try and visit the school on a normal day as well as an open day, especially if the open day is on a Saturday and the children aren’t in class. Most independent schools offer a ‘school in action’ open day. Consider if you want a single sex or a mixed school? There are pros and cons to both. There are several single-sex schools in the area, including Bramley for girls and Priory Prep for boys (see p.16). Look at the facilities, but remember that the teachers are the most important part of a school so make sure you see lessons in progress and ask about staff turnover some movement is healthy, bringing fresh ideas: too much indicates dissatisfaction and can be disrupting. Do you want a school that goes all the way through to GCSEs and A-Levels/ International Baccalaureate, or would you like your child to go to a prep school that doesn’t have a senior school? Which schools/ universities do children go on to? Some preps finish at age 11, others take children to age 13 (see Hawthorns p.16) and upwards. Remember to do the journey in the morning rush hour to see how long it takes when considering a school a bit further
from home, especially if you’re dropping kids at different locations! When you visit, look at the pupils in the final year or two, as these are the product of the school. If you are shown round by a pupil, ask them lots of questions as you will often get an honest answer - such as “what one thing could the school improve?”. What extra-curricular activities are offered - are they at lunchtime or after school? If you are a working parent ask about wrap around care and how flexible this is, can you book into after school care the week or day before? Do they run a holiday camp in the school holidays and what hours does it run? Some schools, like Royal A&A offer breakfast club, and pupils are expected to stay until at least teatime to take part in after school activities. Does the school have an active PTA, and what sort of social activities does it organise? Does the school offer any bursaries or scholarships which you could qualify for? What is the communication like with parents? It’s important you know who to talk to if you have a problem or concern. Who is responsible for pastoral care?

What are the class sizes, are children streamed and at what age and in what subjects? You’d expect independent schools to have smaller class sizes, but this is not always the case. At the top end of the school are they taught by subject specialists? How do they treat/identify special needs children on both ends of the spectrum? Enquire about the extra help available for children who are above or below average in a particular subject. Listen to the Head’s address if there is one, and talk to him or her too. A good school will have an inspiring, enthusiastic and committed headteacher, supported by a loyal and united management team. Try to visit schools early, as some can get booked up. Term Time Hols Court Case When Jon Platt, a father based on the Isle of Wight, took his daughter on holiday to Disneyland during term time, the local council came down hard on him and fined him. Jon took the case to court to challenge the decision and the courts overturned his conviction. Parents all over the country will have followed the case with interest. We all know that holiday companies raise the cost of trips massively when the term is over, so the possibility of taking a cheaper holiday in term time is attractive. Now it seems that some local councils in England have decided not to prosecute other parents facing similar fines for term-time holidays. The BBC spoke to a large proportion of local councils across England and found that many had decided not to prosecute parents who flouted holiday rules. However, 49 councils said they would continue with current policies, including Surrey CC who still maintain that absence for holidays wouldn’t be granted unless there were ‘exceptional circumstances’ (to be determined by headteacher). Parents can be given a penalty notice or prosecuted for unauthorised holidays. A spokesman for the Dept for Education said: "The rules are perfectly clear - children should not be taken out of school without good reason. That is why we have tightened the rules and are supporting schools and local authorities to use their powers to tackle unauthorised absence.’ Many parents feel that if the Government does not want parents to take children out of school, there should be stronger regulation of the holiday industry. better yet retains the traditional charm of a rural day out in the Surrey Hills for all the family. Entertainment is big on the agenda and there’s a host of local bands as well as the ever popular horse and wagon rides and chainsaw demonstrations. Begin with a visit to the sweet shop in the hope of finding your very own golden ticket to Santa's chocolate factory. At the factory gates, be transported to a world of pure imagination filled with the sweet smells of confectionery, treats and a chocolate waterfall! Board the glass elevator to continue your journey into a frozen wonderland. Trip concludes with a chance to see inside the elves mystical toy workshop before finishing with a personal meeting with Father Christmas. Always a mega hit, and often sells out early, so book soon! Your journey starts from Eridge station where visitors will be met with festive music and the smell of hot chestnuts and a roaring coal fire in the festively decorated waiting room. Once on board, everyone can sit back and enjoy a ride through the winter countryside to Tunbridge Wells West. During the journey Santa will visit every child with a gift. Keep an eye out as the train passes through Groombridge for a ‘Spot the Snowman’ competition.
