News Wicked Young Writer Awards Zakti Launches Cressida Cowell, author of smash hit series How to Kidswear Train Your Dragon, will return as Head Judge for the 7th annual Wicked Young Writers Awards.

Raising money for the National Literacy Trust, the awards nurtures writing talent in young people aged 5-25yrs old, and is backed by the award winning stage musical Wicked. Entrants can submit stories in the following categories: 5-7yrs, 8-10yrs, 11-14yrs and older. 120 finalists from across the UK will see their work published in the Wicked Young Writers Awards Anthology, published in association with Young Writers. News Santas Vs Elves Fun Run Local charity St Catherine's Hospice is thrilled to launch Santas Vs Elves this year - a new format for their popular festive fun run.

Christmas starts at The Belfry

The Belfry Shopping Centre in Redhill is pulling out all the stops for Christmas this year as it continues to celebrate its 25th birthday.

Taking place at Caterham School on Sun 27th November and sponsored by Gatwick Airport, Caterham's Santas Vs Elves is one of four 3-5km runs happening across Sussex and Surrey. Babies & Toddlers Cinema clubs to suit all The Harlequin Theatre in Redhill hosts a Saturday Morning Cinema Club, offering families with young children a great chance to come and see some of the best new family films for just £2.50 each! Santa at Bewl Water Kent The magic of Christmas comes to Bewl this year as Santa casts his spell over the water. Babies & Toddlers Education Christmas Get your Skates on! Reigate on Ice returns to Priory Park this Christmas –

and it’s back bigger and better! Officially opening on Dec 1st with a visit from the Mayor, followed by a mega public launch on Sat 3rd December with a spectacular fireworks display, expected to attract more than 8000 people. Local business owner Tommy & Nicola Matthews, who’ve run the rink for the past few years, have worked hard to secure a strong sponsor for 2016 and are pleased to welcome Gatwick Airport as the sole sponsor of this year’s event. As well as the ‘real’ ice rink, Reigate on Ice will launch with entertainment from magicians, singers, a Frozen bouncy Castle, fairground rides and – new for 2016 - Santa’s Grotto. Mini skaters can use the Penguins to help them stay on their feet on the ice, and enjoy the Christmas carousel and helter skelter afterwards – there’s tons to do! Smallest skate size is a kids 8. If you’re chilly after your skating, there’s more catering on offer this year, as well as the favourite hot chocolate and mulled wine stalls. There is also plans for a Disco Roadshow every weekend, which is great if you’re planning a grown-up night out or office Christmas do. Join the party on Sat 3rd December at 6.30pm for fireworks, following a day of festivities in Reigate including Santa landing by helicopter in Priory Park and the Christmas fayre in the town centre (see What’s On for details). Local celeb Shane Richie will also be performing with his band.

Education St John’s Launches Lower School St John’s School in Leatherhead, a leading co-ed independent secondary school, has opened its doors to 11 & 12yr olds for the first time this autumn. The School has increased its age range from 1318yrs in a move designed to widen access and diversify its intake. “The big benefit of welcoming pupils two years earlier is that we now have more time to support their social and emotional development before the demands of the GCSE exams come into play,” explained Caroline Finnegan, Head of Lower School. “By settling them in two years earlier than before, our pupils will develop a real love of learning and be equipped with all the necessary skills to achieve their academic potential.” Candidates are assessed for entry in the January of Year 6 when they will be interviewed and invited to sit a maths, English and abilities test.
