Recycle one more plastic bottle a week
Godstone mum Tracy Carroll is set to create the UK’s most powerful online platform promoting local food and drink. Her website, LocalFoodBritain.com started out in Surrey under the banner Local Food Surrey and now incorporates Sussex, with more counties planned. Tracy is looking for an assistant, perhaps a recent marketing graduate, to help her develop the national site. She needs someone who is prepared to muck in at all levels! It’s an excellent opportunity for someone confident and hardworking to gain experience in a marketing environment.

Only 27 per cent of recyclable plastics, such as bottles, pots, tubs and trays, are currently recycled in Surrey. The rest is thrown away, which is bad for the planet and expensive for the taxpayer.

Yuletide lights - Help Horley shine this Christmas Traders have launched a £10,000 festival fundraising appeal to light up the town, providing new Christmas lights and replacing electrical sockets that caused problems last year. Horley Association of Traders (Hats) has initiated the appeal. With the Christmas light switch-on just round the corner on Saturday, November 29, the fundraising has started in earnest. In fact, it would save £200,000 a year in waste disposal charges if every adult in Surrey recycled just one extra bottle a week. All plastic bottles - including those for shampoo, bleach, cooking oil or ketchup, can be recycled. Bottles, pots, tubs and trays can then be reborn as anything from a new bottle to furniture, children’s toys or even a football shirt. The national ‘Pledge 4 Plastics’ campaign asks everyone to recycle one extra plastic bottle a week. Started by David Lewis, Managing Director, 17 years ago, over one million children have now taken part in Young Voices Choir concerts, at the same time raising over £1million for CLIC Sargent, a charity helping children with cancer. David’s son Ben Lewis (32) said on BBC Breakfast Television “Young Voices is really designed for music teachers to get their kids involved in live music on a huge scale. If you’re a music teacher, you’ll want to be able to go into class and engage with those kids and, being able to offer them a sell out show at a major arena with amazing artistes, it doesn’t get better than that”. youngvoices.co.uk
Changes to school food A golden age for school food has begun, with cooking back on the curriculum and universal free infant school meals. Cooking and food education are now compulsory in the national curriculum for all pupils from Key Stages 1-3 (5-14yrs). There are helpful resources and great ideas from other schools of what works well in delivering good food education in schools at whatworkswell.schoolfoodplan.com These developments may be just in time to turn back the tide of childhood obesity. With nearly one-third of children aged two to 15yrs classed as overweight or obese, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health estimates that the problem is costing the NHS around £5.1bn a year. All this makes every investment in children learning more about food and cooking worth every penny.

Raising Awareness of Language Learning Impairments (RALLI) celebrates success One child in every reception classroom is affected by a specific language impairment. These conditions affect all aspects of life but often go unrecognised, prompting a group of leading academics to come together and launch RALLI, a video-led campaign to raise awareness. Students at Moon Hall College and Moor House School, Oxted were involved in the filming of RALLI’s YouTube campaign.

The film has now had over 200,000 views. RALLI on YouTube raises awareness of difficulties with talking and understanding, which can be hard to spot, so families miss out on accessing much needed help and support. Term-time breaks The battle continues between parents and schools about taking children out of school for family events. One family in Essex has recently won its case against prosecution for taking their child to a family commemoration and not paying the resulting fine. The family was represented by the National Council for Civil Liberties (Liberty), which argued that the fine breached the Human Rights Act. Amendments to the term-time family holiday rules under The Education Regulations 2006 came into force on 1st September 2013, making it more difficult to choose term-time holidays. County Councils can decide against bringing charges, but, for schools, termtime breaks continue to challenge the school administration.

Reigate On Ice Ice Rink in Priory Park, Bell Street, Reigate RH2 7RL Why travel to London for winter skating when we have the best setting, a real ice rink and all the fun of the fair in Reigate? This year’s Reigate On Ice runs from 4th December to 4th January. Entry to the marquee is free and so is the live entertainment. Following last year’s success the Matthews Organisation is presenting ‘Reigate on Ice’ again. Reigate’s own magical Winter Wonderland is close to the Bell Street entrance, close to the trees all lit up and twinkling with fairy lights. Local company, Mayki, produces personalised prints and framed pictures. They know that your little one will love to have their own name on the wall and own something that no-one else has. Prices range from £16 for an unframed A4 print to £47 for a framed A3 size. Favourite toys We’ve just heard about the ‘Slow Toys’ award, for ‘real toys’ that ‘ignite imagination, inspire creativity and give children the freedom to develop at their own pace’. JLM Dance trial classes in Bletchingley and Charlwood JLM Dance School celebrated 100% pass rate in their summer exams, set by the Royal Academy of Dance. This term new students can choose a trial class in any of the age groups from 2.5yrs 8.5+yrs. Most of JLM’s classes take place in Bletchingley Village Hall on Thursdays, with an additional, pre-primary ballet class for 3+yrs at Charlwood Village School near Gatwick on Friday.
