Arts Festival 2014 at Harlequin Theatre Local drama groups, youth and adult performing arts will be performing at Redhill’s Harlequin Theatre from 3rd-6th April – with a wide range of performances, ending with a joint performance on Sunday afternoon by the English Arts Chorale and Redhill Sinfonia. Art exhibitions and workshops will run throughout the four days and on Saturday, 5th April, there will be singing and drama workshops for young people. Regenerating Redhill A new 68-room hotel is destined for the Warwick Quadrant development, alongside the expansion of the existing Sainsbury’s store, a new state-of-the-art gym and additional car parking. Funded by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, it will lease the hotel to Travelodge Hotels Ltd. The scheme will also improve the entrance to the Borough Council’s Harlequin Theatre and Surrey County Council’s library, as well as the public space outside them.

Time for a bargain

The Big Pedal is back From March 3rd – 14th, charity Sustrans is challenging kids, parents and teachers to leave their cars at home and get on their bikes and scooters for the school run. Participating schools competing to make the most journeys by bike or scooter over 10 days receive tailored lesson plans, posters, maps, and ideas on how to encourage everyone to get involved. “This year we’re aiming to get children in two thousand schools to make over one million journeys by bike and scooter over 10 school days” said Malcolm Shepherd, Sustrans Chief Executive. Lily*, four, and her brother Noah*, three, are typical of these children. Lily is a fun-loving, outgoing girl who loves to chat. A loving child, Lily enjoys cuddles, and is very caring towards Noah - they are very close. At school, she is naturally assertive and bright, and makes friends very easily. Noah is a cheeky, lovable little boy. He’s active, and loves to run around playing with his ball. He attends a nursery and enjoys playing with his friends there. Noah is an independent little boy with a great imagination. They did not have a good start to their lives. At home with their birth parents, they experienced neglect and witnessed domestic violence. They have relaxed a lot in their foster home and are blossoming into confident, secure, happy children. Lily and Noah are looking for an adoptive home together. They are very close, and love spending time together. The siblings have made real progress with their foster-carers, and would thrive even more in a permanent adoptive home. N C T N E WS NCT Nearly New Sales return to Redhill
Sing and Sign Grows! Sing and Sign classes in Reigate, Redhill and Godstone have been running since 2007 and are now offering a new Babes programme for babies from birth to 6 months. These classes are a great way to start building the framework for good communication, through the magic ingredient... music!
Redhill, Reigate and Horley NCT branch have moved their Nearly New Sales to a new venue this year. The first sale at the rebuilt St Joseph's Church Hall took place on the 1st February and was a fantastic success. Two more Nearly New Sales will take place there - on the 17th May and 27th September from 2-4pm. NCT members can gain early admission at 1.45pm. Branch Chair Helen Clark said: NCT Nearly New Sales allow parents to buy and sell quality baby gear at great prices, while raising money for the NCT charity. Volunteering at a sale is also a lot of fun! Money raised at the sales will help to pay for national NCT helplines for parents, as well as local NCT support services, including the sling and nappy libraries. Sing and Sign’s award-winning classes are a fun and easy way to learn baby signing, which is proven to help speech development, and reduces tantrums and frustrations. The new Babes class complements Sing and Sign's long-running Stage 1 and 2 classes, which are aimed for babies from 6-30 months.

“People understand that by buying local food they are supporting their community, as well as feeding their families well,” says founder Tracy Carroll. “When I attend events people ask about where to buy the best local food. The Local Food Surrey site makes it as easy as possible. At the same time we are supporting small businesses by helping them get found.” The website features over 75 approved cafes, shops, artisan producers and family-friendly pubs, searchable by postcode. All make, sell or serve local produce. The numbers on the Local Food Surrey website continue to grow, making the site an authority on local food in the county. Tracy says the growing interest in reducing food miles and simplifying the often complicated supply chain is behind an increase in local food initiatives. One example is the Redhill and Reigate Food Group (RedhillandReigateFood.org.uk), set up by Reigate dad Simon Bacon in 2013. TAKE THEM AWAY…. Who needs a holiday? The whole family! Perhaps even grandma and grandpa, too. I believe there are two types of holiday – one where you want to be in the lap of luxury: to have everything done for you – which usually means the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning and the washing.

The benefits of early language learning Language learning is patchy in our primary schools, yet there are clear benefits from learning a second language at an early age. Children have an intuitive and natural ability to learn languages. They are able to pick up on and duplicate tricky sounds easily and they are still flexible to adapt to different ways of pronunciation. Starting early enables children to speak a second language more smoothly and confidently. Fluency, which ideally includes thinking in the other language, is also more likely to be achieved from an early start. In bilingual communities, children readily take to being
taught in two languages from as early as 2yrs. This happens most successfully when each language is consistently spoken in a particular situation or by a particular person with age-relevant vocabulary and suitable literature. Children enjoy exploring a second language, using new words to express themselves, discovering new nursery rhymes, new games which can make them also more passionate about learning in general. It also builds on vocabulary and makes children more inquisitive about sentence structure and the connections between words and their origins. A second language may also be needed to maintain the connection with family members or friends living outside the UK. Later in life, feeling comfortable in a second language opens opportunities for networking, building relations or even studying abroad! I recall how proud my 4 year old son was just to say “Hola! and “Adios!” when we were in Barcelona, how soothing it was for my daughter to sing “fais

The Choice for Dunottar
A meeting of nearly 200 parents and supporters of Dunottar School, Reigate, voted unanimously in support of a proposal by educational charity United Learning to save the school from closure. The action group, Dunottar Voice, is now promoting the plan to the school's board of governors, which is also reviewing other options. The proposal is that boys be admitted to the school from September 2014 – in years 7 & 9 and the 6th form. United Learning is keen to support the ethos of the school. The decision rests with the governors, with representatives of both Reigate Grammar School and Dunottar on the governing board.

Lingfield Nature Reserve Work Parties This 26-acre site is only the 2nd village-based reserve in the country to be awarded Local Nature Reserve status by English Nature. It contains a mixture of meadows, hedges, woodland copses plus a wetland area, an orchard and a butterfly garden. Access is free and open to all; hardstanding and grass paths make it suitable for pushchairs & wheelchair users. Monthly work parties help to look after the reserve, usually on the last Sunday of the month. Meet in the Butterfly Garden. The next work parties are Sunday, 23 March, 10am-12noon and Sunday, 27 April, 10am-12noon. Also - Pond Open Days on Sundays, 9 March, 13 April and 11 May, 10am12noon. Free.
