We’ve just enjoyed a proper British street party in the drizzle to celebrate HRH 90th birthday, and we coped! Here’s hoping the Summer hols will be a sunny and bright – it does make life easier doesn’t it? This issue is packed full of Summer holiday ideas. Whether you’re thinking of braving a festival with kids, looking for childcare options or tackling a new sport (inspired by the Olympics), then check out pages 10-18 for your guide to Summer in East Surrey. News Introducing East Surrey Dance A newly formed dance school launches in East Surrey this Summer, merging the existing Woldingham Dance and JLM Academy to create East Surrey Dance. Experienced and qualified teachers will cover Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Ballet and fun ISTD Modern and Tap, plus pre school and adult groups. The Woldingham branch will introduce DDMIX to the adults in the area - a new enjoyable workout created by Darcey Bussell that takes inspiration from international dance styles. There are summer workshops and pre-school classes over the Summer, so check out pages 6 & 14 for more info.

New playground for Old Coulsdon

Let the Show Begin!

The dedicated Friends of Grange Park have successfully raised over £100,000 in grants and donations to build a new playground. Their ambition to renovate the 25-year-old severely dilapidated playground will be realised this summer, with the new design combining ideas from 150 school-aged children in a ‘design your dream playground’ competition. The new design includes local heritage and landscape references like Kenley Airfield and the River Bourne.

Now in its 19th year and run by the Society of London Theatre, Kids Week encourages young people to experience the magic of live theatre for free! From 1-31st August one child aged 16 or under can go free to a wide range of shows when accompanied by a full paying adult, and up to two extra children can go for half price, per transaction. Shows include MAMMA MIA!, The Mousetrap and Wicked. Ticket onsale now via kidsweek.co.uk

Redhill Town Centre Revamp Plans have been submitted for the proposed multiplex cinema, shop and restaurants in Redhill town centre. The plans were on display until June 8th for public comment, and the review will take place with the planning committee later this Summer. The plans include a sixscreen cinema and up to eleven glass-fronted shops and family-style restaurants on the ground and first floors. 153 studio, one and two bedroom homes for private rent are proposed to be built above. Chris Wright, Chairman of the Friends said: ‘The Friends have worked tirelessly over the last two years to raise funds for a new and inclusive playground for our community. The impact will be far-reaching, encouraging physical activity among our young people and providing a much needed facility where disabled children can play alongside their able-bodied peers’. Support for the project has come from the Biffa Award, the London Marathon Charitable Trust and Macquarie Group Foundation. The Children’s Trust have also been consulted to make the playground accessible to all youngsters.

News Merstham regeneration project stalls The building contractor working on the new community hub and shops at the end of Portland Drive has gone into administration, putting the project on hold until a new builder can be appointed. The site had been due to open later this year, with the new development housing the new library, community facility, youth centre, café and shops. It is a blow to the local community who were looking forward to

Stop Child Abuse Surrey CC has launched a new child protection campaign, aimed at spotting the signs of abuse and neglect. The NSPCC reports that there are over 50,000 children in the UK identified as needing protection from abuse, with reports of sexual abuses against children rising sharply. Don’t assume this couldn’t happen to somebody you know. To spot the signs of child abuse or neglect, look for changes in: • Appearance – such as frequent unexplained injuries, consistently poor

Summer Reading Challenge This year's Big Friendly Read Summer Reading Challenge runs across the school summer holidays, linking up with the global year-long Roald Dahl 100 celebrations, honouring the world's No.1 storyteller. The campaign encourages 4-11yr olds to read 6 books during the Summer break. These can be any type of book - joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library. Every time a child finishes a book they get stickers and rewards and there's a certificate for everyone who finishes. The Big Friendly Read will feature some of Roald Dahl's best-loved characters and the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake. It encourages reading on a giant scale and features themes such as invention, mischief and friendship. Squeak for Pocket Money Have you checked out the new pocket money job site Jobsqueak. com yet? It is the brainchild of a Reigate family, who have set up a site to match odd jobs with local people who want to do them. Check it out for babysitting, garden work and car washing jobs for a fair wage in and around Reigate. It’s a great way for your kids to earn that holiday pocket money.

If your child has a phone and you worry about it running out of battery when they might need it most, then the E10p app is for you. Launched recently for Android (with the Apple version expected later this year), it allows you to keep track of the phone’s (and therefore your child’s) location, as well as the battery life their phone has. Once charge becomes low, it sends a message to the parent who can opt to swap it to a power-saving mode automatically. The app is password protected (so the kids can’t fiddle with it) and protects their blushes by being discreet, so their friends don’t know their parents are following them! Built for child safety, as well as parent’s peace of mind, the app will at least do away with the ‘but my battery ran out’ argument when they come home late! e10p.com

Education How to help your child transfer to secondary school By Liat Hughes Joshi During the months before your little one makes the big move to secondary school, it’s recommended that you begin the following to help them in their transition:

Ramp up responsibilities Senior school children have to be considerably more responsible for their own belongings and themselves. Whereas primary school teachers send letters to parents, at ‘big’ school, communication on day-to-day issues might well be to your child only.

Begin building independence out and about Most secondary school pupils travel to school minus mum and dad, so get yours used to being out without you. It’ll be less daunting for them if this starts on the journey to primary school, rather than being thrown into travelling alone on a lesser-known route.

Listen out for concerns Some children take this huge change in their stride and are ready to move on, while others will feel anxious. Common concerns include getting lost around a much larger school, dealing with the journey, making new friends and managing the homework load.

Attend settling-in days Most secondaries hold a session for new joiners, usually during the summer term of year six. This is an important opportunity to get to know the buildings, potential classmates and teachers and it should make the first day less intimidating.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind once your child has started secondary school… Expect them to be tired and emotional Many year sevens get very tired thanks to the ‘newness’, on top of a longer day and a more complicated journey. Stick to early nights and restful weekends to fend off exhaustion – and the moodiness that goes with this.

Get super-organised with homework At primary, pupils might only have had a small amount of homework; expect the game to be raised now. Not only will there be more but keeping on top of when it all needs handing in can be complicated.

Get used to knowing much less about what goes on In primary, you might well have been at the school gates most days and familiar with your child’s friends, parents and teachers. This will change: with independent travel comes a more hands-off approach.

Be there for them It’s tempting to think this independence means you’re being made redundant come September but they’ll still need you - albeit in different ways. Be there as a sounding board - someone to listen and advise. First Aid Tips for the Holiday Season Whether you are going abroad or staying in the UK this holiday season, here are some first aid tips for keeping the kids safe and dealing with any accidents or emergencies over the coming summer months.

If you are going away on holiday, make sure you keep the address of where you are staying handy in case you need to call an ambulance.

Write it in your phone or keep it in your purse. This will save vital time if you need emergency help.

Know the local emergency services number! In the UK, dialling

999 will get you immediate access to police, fire brigade or an ambulance. In Europe, the correct number is 112 and in the USA, you need to dial 911. When you call, tell the operator where you are and what is wrong. They usually stay on the phone while you wait for help.

Pack a small first aid kit and a bottle of water in your bag or suitcase in case you or the kids run into trouble. Having access to plasters, bandages and water can help you prevent infection for any cuts or scrapes. If the cut is pouring with blood, bandages will help keep pressure on a wound to help stop the bleeding.

If stung by a bee, the sting will stay

in the skin. The best way to remove this is to scrape it out with a hard flat edge (such as the edge of a credit card) so that the poison from the sting does not enter the body. You can treat any swelling with a cold compress.

Remember your sunscreen

(and to keep reapplying it!). Use SPF50 on children to prevent them from getting sunburn and minimise risk of skin damage.

If your child gets sunburn, cool

the area down for 10 minutes under cool running water and wrap it up (clingfilm is the best thing to use as it doesn’t stick to the burned skin). If the sunburn is on a child’s hands, face, feet or genitals or it wraps around the circumference of an arm or leg then seek medical advice as these areas are very sensitive and can lead to complications.

Five Easy Tips for Taking Great Photos of your Kids this Summer!

Keep the kids well hydrated

(ice lollies are great for this!) and cover their heads in the sun. Over exposure to heat from the sun can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which is very dangerous for little ones. Symptoms of these conditions include loss of appetite, sudden sickness and diarrhea, seizures and delirium - if this happens, cool your child and seek urgent medical help.

Don’t leave your children unattended if you are near water. If a child or adult drowns then

CPR needs to be started immediately, including 5 rescue breaths to bring any water up from the lungs. Even if it is a ‘near miss’ and the child/adult makes a full recovery at the scene, they must always receive urgent medical attention to ensure that no water is trapped on the lungs. 1. Get outside and find the right light. The best time of day to photograph is during “golden hour”, which is the hour just before sunset. It creates beautiful soft lighting for portraits where you just can’t go wrong. However if you are photographing in bright sunlight do try to find a patch of open shade to photograph in. Bright sunlight creates unflattering shadows across the face and makes people scrunch up their eyes. 2. Don’t say cheese! It makes unnatural, forced smiles, and stiff postures. Create natural laughs with silly faces, games, ticking, jokes or bubbles. Kids love it! 3. Get your children busy doing something they love. It allows you to capture them being them-selves, in an unforced, natural setting. 4. Get down low to their eye level. Even if it means muddy or sandy knees! It will create a shot where you are engaged with your little subject. 5. And finally just have fun! Photography is a great way to slow down, and be in the moment with your kids.

Swimming Confidence in water is an essential skill for everybody – and there are dozens of places in East Surrey for your kids to learn to swim. Tennis The recent successes of players like Andy Murray has led to a big resurgence in the popularity of tennis over the past few years, with many clubs now offering Junior memberships and holiday coaching programmes. The costs are not as prohibitive as you may think, and the equipment can often be borrowed from the club. There are loads of local tennis clubs offering indoor and outdoor courts, and many offer mini tennis as a good introduction for young people. Redhill Lawn Tennis Club and Reigate Priory Lawn Tennis Club are both offering summer schools from £12 and £16 per session, respectively. Banstead, Epsom & Crawley tennis clubs are also taking part in the Great British Tennis Weekend, on 1617th July, where families can go along and try the sport for free. Horseriding Horse racing has always been a favourite British pastime – it’s even the queen’s favourite sport – but all of these riders had to start somewhere. There are a large number of riding stables in the area offering classes for children and adults. Prices start at around £25-35 for group lessons, with day courses for around £60. Teach your kids to ride a bike in 7 easy steps Kids usually learn to ride a bike between the ages of 3-8 yrs old. Many kids are now more confident on wheels, due to the popularity of scooters - but bike riding requires different skills. Here are seven simple steps to help you succeed.

A steering limiter is highly recommended as this will enable your child to keep in the right direction and prevent falls. While you’re looking at safety equipment, it’s worth purchasing bright coloured clothing or safety vests to ensure visibility.

Rainy Day Crafting With Kids: Our Top Tips

Even when you have an activity planned, it doesn’t always go as planned with squabbles, mess and children that get bored quickly. To help, we’ve compiled our top tips for rainy day crafting with kids.

Be prepared - kids are impatient little crafters and they won’t wait around while you hunt for glue. Make sure you have every ready before you start the activity, with surfaces covered, overalls at the ready (for you as well as them!) and everything laid out in easy to reach pots. Share things out

- kids aren’t great at sharing, so make sure you divide the materials out for each child involved in the activity. This way you can tailor the materials to suit the age of each child.

- If you’re painting, pour paints into plastic pots or cups and put a different brush in each one to avoid ending up with a brown mush of all the colours. You can also put different sizes and types of brushes in each pot to make the activity more interesting. Nature Notes Who are the Woodcraft Folk? Surrey Young Farmers Have you heard of the Woodcraft Folk organisation, but not quite sure what it is? It might be the perfect club for your kids, especially if they’re interested in nature and environment, and more traditional groups like Cubs and Brownies aren’t quite for them.

The Woodcraft Folk was formed in 1924 in South London, and the name is derived from the skill of living in the open air, close to nature (not working with wood, as you might think). There are over 400 groups in the UK, for all ages, offering a wide range of activities - including cooperative challenges and games, cooking, drama, debating, singing, dancing, crafts and inventing. They are very much an outdoor organisation (especially in the summer term) and enjoy walking, outdoor wide games, firelight cooking and camping. The aim of the organization is to offer a place where children (both boys and girls) will grow in confidence, learn about the world and start to understand how to value our planet and each other. The Redhill & Reigate branch meets at 6.30pm on Tuesdays, and includes 3 age groups from 6-16yrs - Elfins, Pioneers and Venturers. The Surrey branch has a groups for ages 10-15yrs and 16+yrs, where you can learn new skills and enjoy countryside activities, including organising and manning the annual Cowpie country show. These seeds have returned to Earth and distributed to 10k schools across the country, so kids can carry out their own experiments to discover the effects of space travel on food production.
