New editor for Families Surrey East We are delighted to announce that Hannah Grogan, from Reigate, will be the new editor of Families Surrey East, starting with the next issue, September-October. Hannah is mum to two young boys and has lived in Reigate for the past 5 years. She is retiring from her current role at Penguin Random House publishing group to start in July, and is really looking forward to being more involved in the local Families community. Hannah has a background in journalism and sales, and with an 18mth old and three year old at home, is fully immersed in the news, events and issues that interest local parents. Hannah saw the ad in the January-February issue and is now looking forward to producing her first issue. She plans to introduce a few new features to the magazine â€“ so watch this space!

The Summer Reading Challenge The annual Summer Reading Challenge, for 4-11yr olds and their families, encourages children to read six or more library books of their choice during the summer holidays, with incentives and rewards, plus a certificate or medal for every child who completes the Challenge. Children can sign up at their local library at the start of the summer holidays â€“ itâ€™s absolutely free - and pre-schoolers can take part in the miniChallenge. Last year over 800,000 children took part, nearly half of them boys! The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way for busy parents to get back into the habit of using the library as a family. Children can also recommend books and decide what to read next using the websiteâ€™s Book Sorter. The Education team at Gatton Park offers regular holiday play and learn sessions in their beautiful surroundings. The team has just announced a new regular slot on Fridays for 2-4yr olds, â€˜Toddlers Trails and Talesâ€™ from 10-11.30am and 1.30-3pm. Children can listen to a story, do craft activities, then go for a walk around the park to bring the story to life. The cost is ÂŁ5 per session in term time and ÂŁ7 during school holidays. Meningitis and childrenâ€™s ability at school The Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) estimates that there are around 3,200 cases of meningitis and septicaemia every year in the UK. Meningitis can produce deficits in IQ, memory and attention. Recent research shows that the impact on IQ and visual attention can last longer than 3-6 months and may still be evident one year after illness. Chris Head, Chief Executive at MRF said: â€œThis research highlights the need for all children who have had meningitis to be closely monitored as they get older.â€? New resources â€“ â€˜Your Guideâ€™ and â€˜My Journalâ€™ from MRF contain information for parents, both about managing the physical aftereffects and the potential for longer-term impacts at school.â€? On March 29 MRF supporters celebrated the news that a MenB vaccine will be offered to babies free under the NHS. The start date may be as soon as September this year. Polesden Lacey looks for their â€˜Photographer of the Yearâ€™ 2015 A â€˜Celebration of Colourâ€™ is the theme for this yearâ€™s competition to capture the vivid colours of Polesden Lacey. Finding lost dogs in Mole Valley Joe Bailey, Dog Warden for MVDC, has set up a Facebook page to raise awareness of dogs lost in the area. He explained â€œIt became clear that many residents were willing to help look for lost animals and we know that there is much interest in the local community for re-homing abandoned dogs. We already have a regular column in the Dorking and Leatherhead Advertiser to raise awareness of dogs looking for new homes and this new Facebook page seemed a logical progression.â€? ‘Wear A Hat Day’ takes place in classrooms across the country.

Surrey Law Centre was set up in 2002 and became a Legal Aid supplier undertaking family, housing and community care law. Since the reduction of Legal Aid in April 2013 the Law Centre has gone back to its roots; volunteer lawyers run free Legal Advice Clinics across the county in the areas of Family, Employment, Litigation, Housing and Domestic Abuse law.

Thanks to more of you than ever, Wear A Hat Day 2015 was the biggest and hattiest yet! We are greatly indebted to the hundreds of schools and families from up and down the land who have taken part in our flagship fundraising campaign for Brain Tumour Research. Your commitment to help us is much appreciated. Local charity, ‘Kids for Kids’, supports whole villages in Darfur in Sudan, where children live lives of inexcusable and unimaginable hardship.

Ruth Rendell, the well-known crime writer and life peer, who died in May, was Patron of the charity, which is run by Patricia Parker and based in Dorking. ‘Kids for Kids’ adopts whole villages and make an immediate difference to individual families - their children have milk to drink, a blanket to sleep under, a mosquito net to protect them from malaria. They are providing health care within reach, veterinary care, trees for shade and fruit and, most important of all, water near at hand. Families are ‘loaned ‘ six goats, which help feed each family and in turn the goats’ offspring are ‘loaned’ to other families in need. Ruth Rendell had donated hand pumps to bring clean water to Darfur’s villagers. Each hand pump costs about £4,500.

Supporting breastfeeding

Working mothers and breastfeeding are the focus for this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, 1-7 August.

New children’s arts and crafts classes in Reigate The Creation Station is launching its hands-on art and craft exploration sessions in Reigate. Baby Discover (5-14mths) and Little Explorer (15mths-5yrs) let children explore with lots of materials, tools and ideas. Starting in September, weekly classes will run Tuesday mornings at The Colman Redland Centre and Wednesday mornings at The Nutfield Memorial Hall. This summer, you can try taster sessions for Baby Discover and Little Explorers on 1st & 15th July, 10.15am & 11.30am at Nutfield Memorial Hall. Many women still struggle to find breastfeeding-friendly places. 2015’s World Breastfeeding Week encourages all employers to support their staff if they want to continue breastfeeding. When Australian supermodel Nicole Trufio hit the headlines after posing on the cover of Elle magazine breastfeeding her baby son, Alison Edwards, senior lecturer in Midwifery at Birmingham City University, said “Society really needs to change its view and the media can play a crucial role here to stop breastfeeding being regarded so negatively,” She continued “There’s no set time when a woman should stop breastfeeding. We encourage women to aim to start feeding within an hour of giving birth and to continue breastfeeding for up to about six months, as recommended by the World Health Organisation.” According to NHS figures, 82 per cent of new mothers in Britain start breastfeeding

Cut out obesity Existing anti-obesity policies in the NHS are ‘doomed to failure’ because they are not recognising that babies are already on an unhealthy trajectory in the womb according to President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, Professor Modi. Judy More, paediatric dietitian and member of the Infant & Toddler Forum (ITF), said: “There is evidence now that shows babies born to women who are overweight or obese when they become pregnant have a higher risk of becoming overweight themselves. Babies born to mothers who gain excess weight during pregnancy have the same risk. To stop the cycle of obesity we need to act before the conception of the next generation and help women to adopt healthy lifestyles before conception and during pregnancy. Another call to action comes from the British Heart Foundation, which is seeking to ban junk food advertising before 9pm rather than just during children’s programming. Foetal nourishment – a new understanding The nutrition of embryos in the first 11 weeks of pregnancy is becoming better understood. Scientists at The University of Manchester, writing in the journal Placenta, describe how gland cells in the lining of the uterus store glucose in the form of glycogen. This is delivered to an embryo via the placenta along with glycoproteins, producing energy and growth. Once a direct blood supply from the mother’s circulation to the placenta is established after 11 weeks, the supply from the gland cells tails off. Professor Aplin, of the University’s Institute of Human Development said: “A newly created embryo could not survive the full force of arterial blood from the mother. Although it has been known for some time that uterine secretions nurture the tiny embryo, the mechanism whereby the nutrients leave maternal cells and are delivered to the placenta has not been understood. The discovery of this mechanism represents a leap forward in what we understand about how nutrients get from mother to child in the womb.” Nutrients are stored in the gland cells before pregnancy. This emphasises the need for a healthy diet before conception. ‘Tracking nutrient transfer at the human maternofetal interface from 4 weeks to term’, was published in the journal, Placenta.

Camp Kernow sounds like the perfect place for kids aged 7-14yrs to enjoy 3-6 days away from home. Swimming

Learn to SWIM this summer Recent research by the Amateur Swimming Association, the English National Governing Body for Swimming (ASA), revealed that over nine million adults in England are unable to swim. The Association’s head of Learn to Swim, Jon Glenn, commented: “Swimming isn’t just a fun activity that the whole family can enjoy together; it’s a life skill that teaches children how to be safe in and around water. We want all children to start their swimming journey as early as possible so they can take advantage of the many health and social benefits of swimming and make it a habit for life.”

Fusion, Leatherhead Fusion runs a Swim School programme at Leatherhead Leisure Centre, which follows the nationally recognized ASA Learn to Swim Pathway. Students are grouped by ability and continually assessed to help them attain their ASA level. Look out for extra incentives this summer – Fusion occasionally offers one free Adult Choice membership for every child place booked on the Swim School programme.

Donyngs, Redhill Summer holiday courses are available for children from 3months up, in addition to their term-time courses. Crash courses for junior beginners, 3+yrs, will take place 29-31 July and 5-7 August. Beginner diving courses are available 17-19 August. Donyng’s Learn To Swim courses follow the ASA recognized swimming plan. The 3-day crash swimming course costs £14.70; £16.95 for the diving course. During term time, everyone can progress through the levels in their own time. Free swimming is offered to everyone signing up for a term-time course – meaning kids can enjoy free swimming at any time. Banstead Sports Centre, Tadworth With the new sports centre set for completion in September, the current building is still fully operational for the school summer holidays and will run swimming courses for beginners of all ages. Run by GLL, in the same group as Donyngs and Horley Leisure Centre, there will be crash swimming courses plus ‘Kids for a Quid’ – under 16s swim entry for just £1 – check at the centre to see what time restrictions apply. Under 5s swimming is always free.

Horley Leisure Centre Horley, in the same GLL group as the two above centres, will also run crash swimming courses for children and summertime entry for £1 for the under 16s.

Tandridge Trust There are now three pools for use in the Oxted and Caterham area: Tandridge Leisure Centre at Hoskins Road, Oxted RH8 9HT; de Stafford Sports Centre in Burntwood Lane, Caterham CR3 5YX and the Village Health Club, Weston Drive, Caterham CR3 5XY. Crash swimming courses will take place between 27 July – 28 August, for 4+yrs at Oxted, 5+yrs at de Stafford. PoolSchools Since launching their FREE programme in January, PoolSchools has introduced over 300 children to swimming. These lessons address a child’s anxiety, encouraging them to engage in the water and build confidence. Children learn with their peers in a group and without the support of a parent. On completion of the course, swimmers are ready to engage in a full course of lessons. Swimmers who attend the FREE courses are entitled to 60% off their first full term of lessons and 50% of their first crash course. The latest addition to the MAD Academy Team, Laura is taking over from the highly successful Maggie Duerden, who has delighted young children and parents in the Dorking area for the past 7 years.

More Martial Arts in Horley PPCKD offers a type of Martial Arts knows as Choi Kwang Do, which is great for kids of all ages from 5+ years. Attending weekly classes gives kids self confidence, focus, discipline, strength and flexibility. Their teachers work through 18 levels to achieve black belt and can only teach from this stage. All teachers are CRB checked.
