Supporting a Dyslexic Child By Ellie Malt “Do you think she might have dyslexia or something like that?” I asked. I was standing in the playground with one of the teaching assistants, watching my 4 year old climb into her buggy, eager for her after-school snack. Although it was only her second term in Reception, I’d noticed she seemed uninterested in the alphabet, while other children could already write their names. But I was only really thinking out loud. Even to me, it seemed ridiculously early to be jumping to any conclusions. “Probably” she shot back over the general hubbub. I admit, I was shocked. But looking back years later, finally in possession of a formal diagnosis, I appreciate her honesty. I only wish I had acted sooner; it could have saved so much struggle and frustration. READ MORE

Top Homework Tips Where, When and How
Let THEM Do the Work
Create space. If possible, this should be a communal space but one with minimal distractions. This enables parental supervision/input without it feeling like an intrusion.
Provide guidance, not answers. Use questioning to help them get as close to the answer as they can but don’t tell them.
Establish a routine. Some children prefer to do homework straight after school; others need to ‘unwind’ or eat first. Whatever is decided, stick to it. Get organised. Have your child do the hard work first when they are most alert. Help them make a “Done/To Do” list.
Let them make mistakes. Giving answers means they will not learn the material and their teacher will not know how much they understand it. Step in only when progress comes to a halt. Encourage them to set small positive targets promoting independent working and selfsufficiency.

Help Your Child to Make a Smooth Transition Back to School By Evolve Psychology Services
A normal 6-week summer holiday is a long time for any student, but the recent 5-month break has been unprecedented. The news that schools are going to be reopening in September for many will offer a sense of relief that the world is starting to spin in the right direction. For some a new school or class will not only be a relief for parents but could trigger happiness and excitement for the student looking forward to the new opportunities and adventures. For others, however, transitioning to a new secondary school, class or teacher will mean unfamiliar social pressures, different routines and new responsibilities, particularly in the current climate. All of which could create uncomfortable challenges and be a time of sadness, worry and/or stress.
Harrogate based Evolve Psychology Services specialises in neurodevelopmental assessments such as Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASD), ADHD and Learning Disability assessments as well as Emotional Wellbeing (Psychological) therapy for families, children and adults. Through their therapy and neurodevelopmental management work, they have been offering advice for how parents can engage with their children to help overcome anxiety and fear about the new school year.
Dr Laura Powling says “Offering practical and emotional support for children and their families such as organisational skills, orientation and familiarisation can be hugely helpful. Things that might seem like small details to us can be huge for young people to help them with a transition. These might include For children with Autism Spectrum looking at the class timetables, showing the child their new teacher, Conditions or ADHD the changes providing details about where their can trigger a host of issues around adjusting to new environments, new classroom is and how the child finds it on their first day as well as where noises, increased size of cohorts they hang their coat and PE bag and unsettling support structures with new relationships among peers etc for younger children. A Word from Queen Mary’s Early Years’ Lead, Miss Emily Abrahams Miss Abrahams from Queen Mary’s School, between Ripon and Thirsk, describes what it is like to be an Early Years’ Teacher in 2020. Why did you become a teacher? When I first started school, I had a lovely teacher. I remember thinking that if I ever became a teacher I wanted to be as kind as Mrs Gregory. I also like seeing the children’s confidence grow in reading and writing as well as all the extra opportunities at Queen Mary’s like drama, swimming, French, music and outdoor education. The joy of my role is that every day and class is different! I might plan to teach spelling by playing a group game sitting on the rug, which then transforms into a ‘magic carpet’ and we jet off across the world, unlocking the keys to magical lands by spelling words on the way. We could then use Google Earth, go into the woods or write letters to the people we ‘met’ in our magical lands. The possibilities are endless. READ MORE familiesonline.co.uk

Family cycling in North Yorkshire By Emma Young Emma is a Mum of 2 boys aged 8 & 5 and founder of the Child Friendly Bike Rides in Yorkshire Facebook Group. Both of her boys started to learn on balance bikes before progressing to pedal bikes around just 3 years of age. Emma founded the group around 4 years ago when the family were trying to find bike rides suitable for a 4-yearold and a baby in a trailer. During Lockdown, the group has seen a sudden increase in interest with over 900 new members joining in the last 60 days. The group is a very active group of like-minded people seeking advice on suitable places to go with the family to enjoy cycling. Although based in West Yorkshire, Emma has done a variety of bike rides around North Yorkshire over the last few years. Here, she shares them with us to provide some ideas for different ages and cycling experiences; from the beginners on balance bikes to more experienced mountain bikers. Pump tracks are great for new and novice riders. They look like a mini BMX track, but are named because of the way that you ride around them without pedalling. In the region, we have a small handful of pump tracks. One in Wetherby: The Devil’s Toenail, located on Quarry Hill Lane is a smallish track which is great for beginners and a larger BMX track for older kids. Another is in York at Rawcliffe Bar with one familiesonline.co.uk
more being located in Catterick Village. There is a directory of BMX and Pump tracks online: https://bit.ly/3i9swvv.
Disused railway lines are perfect for young riders, who are not confident on roads yet and cannot manage hills. The Wetherby Railway Path is a lovely, safe, flat 2.7 mile off road route from the village of Spofforth, where there is a castle and lovely playground, to the town of Wetherby where there are plenty of cafĂŠs. For more information read a full review on the Cycle Sprog website: www.cyclesprog.co.uk/get-cycling/ family-friendly-cycle-routes/spenvalley-greenway-family-cyclingyorkshire/ The Harrogate to Ripley Cycleway is a 4-mile tarmacked route between the Bilton area of Harrogate and Ripley. There is plenty to keep little cyclists interested along route, including cycling over the impressive Grade 2 listed, sevenarch Nidd Gorge Viaduct. READ MORE September 2020 15

‘Surviving COVID-19’: How we got through it at the Little Gym By Kate Henebury Kate Henebury, owner of the Little Gym Harrogate, Leeds and soon to be York tells Families North Yorkshire Magazine what it was like getting through the past 5 months and ‘surviving COVID-19’ as a local business owner. My heart sank and there was a tear in my eye as I turned the keys and locked the doors to our Little Gyms on Friday 20th March. Having worked tirelessly to build both gyms over the last 10 years, to be told we had to close our doors indefinitely was almost too much to take. We’d planned for and overcome all sorts of adversities over the last decade, but this was new, unprecedented and very scary. We employ 19 members of staff and have over 1200 members visiting Harrogate and Leeds Little Gyms each week. The safety of our members and staff is always our number one priority and we had already introduced rigorous additional cleaning and safety measures which had given our members the confidence to attend right up until the day we closed. However, when the schools closed and the lockdown began, we closed in line with all OFSTED registered organisations. Being part of a franchise is hugely beneficial. As part of my role working for The Little Gym 16 September 2020

A burden shared is a burden halved! Since re-opening, we all remain in daily contact and are closer than ever before. The pandemic has strengthened not only the network but each individual business within it. The last 4 months have been an unprecedented challenge for everyone, especially for small business owners and the selfemployed. Childcare Post Lockdown
Do you dread mealtimes? Does your child have little interest in broccoli and beans? Whether you’re trying baby-led weaning or desperate to get vegetables into a pre-schooler, here’s our tips on how to give your child the best start at the dinner table.
As childcare opens up postlockdown, there is a sense of unease about whether it’s safe to send our children back to nursery. Of course, we want to protect them. So how are nurseries making their environment safe for our children? READ MORE

Dealing with Separation Anxiety
Children with OCD: Recognising the Signs
Transitions are always stressful, and even more so if you have been out of the swing of things for a while. Dr Sarah Mundy from Parenting through Stories has created a guide to give you some ideas about the best ways to support your child through separation anxiety.
Children worry. Feeling anxious, having doubts, or being worried is normal at any age. However, those who are experiencing OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), may feel unable to stop focussing on those feelings – no matter how much they want to. This can compel them to behave in particular ways. READ MORE

Don’t be over-ambitious. Be active often, rather than attempting a 10 mile hike! Make it fun. Dance! Put on some tunes that get your kids moving. Set screen time limits. Make time. I’m afraid to go to work, what can I do? By Emma Grace As lockdown is slowly reduced, and the shielding programme has now been paused, at Bridge Employment Law we are getting enquiries from people who are being told they must come into work but are afraid that doing so puts them at risk. There are a number of things to consider here: Can you work from home? If you can work from home, then this may familiesonline.co.uk
be the best option, so you should talk to your employer about this. If your employer is saying you should now come into work, then you should get some advice to see if this is valid. Are you clinically vulnerable or shielding? If so, your employer should reassure you about the steps they have taken to keep you safe at work. Where you don’t feel they are doing so, you may be
able to insist on staying away, on the grounds that your workplace is unsafe. Not going into work when your employer asks you to is a potential fundamental breach of contract, so you should seek advice, and you should use the grievance procedure to outline your concerns. Are you concerned about your actual journey to work? READ MORE September 2020 25
