Portable Pasta Sticks
Fancy a fun food activity with the kids?
Transform a boring bowl of pasta into a fun and portable lunch the kids can assemble themselves. Thread cooked penne pasta on skewers. Add toppings. Lay on a tray, top with sauce and cheeses and bake. Mix up the toppings, depending on what your children like. Try mushrooms, onions, pesto, peas, cooked chicken, ham or different cheeses.

Local couple take lead at Razzamataz Barnet
The curtain rises on a new chapter for Razzamataz Barnet as husband-andwife team Lizzie Buckingham and Alex Gatherer take over ownership of the Saturday theatre school at Wren Academy, Finchley.
Lizzie, principal of North London Stars dance school, is a professional performer with credits spanning the West End, touring productions and family theatre. Alex is Director of Theatrical Performance at a prestigious local independent school and writer of original musicals performed by schools across the UK and US.
Now, the creative couple combine their extensive expertise to bring fresh energy and opportunity to the Barnet stage, with plans for performances, workshops and special events to inspire young performers... watch this space!

Why some children struggle and what actually helps
Parents quickly learn that children are born different.
One child can eat almost anything, while another has a sensitive stomach. Most parents understand that children have different needs. They adapt. They learn what their child can manage, what overwhelms them, and how to help their system become stronger over time.
Emotional development works in much the same way. Some children are naturally more sensitive to noise, change, disappointment or uncertainty. Others seem able to cope with almost anything. Just as children differ physically, they also differ emotionally. Some arrive in the world with a more robust emotional constitution, while others are more vulnerable to
and require greater support to develop resilience.
Most parents instinctively understand this when it comes to physical health. If a child has a sensitive stomach, we don’t keep giving them foods that make them unwell and hope they will “toughen up”. We adjust, support and gradually help their system mature.
Yet we are often less thoughtful about emotional development. Maria Kondratchik, senior child and adolescent psychotherapist at Family Futures, said: "A child
struggle more –helps
who becomes overwhelmed, anxious or distressed may not need harsher consequences or greater pressure. They may need support that matches where they are developmentally."
That support looks different for every child. The first step is understanding your child.

Families North London talks to Hampstead Hill School's Headteacher Anne Napier and finds out how the warmth of an individual approach and high standards help each child grow in confidence and prepare for their next steps.
What would you like prospective parents to understand about Hampstead Hill School?
Hampstead Hill is a non-selective school where children are genuinely known, carefully taught and warmly supported. Having been part of the school for almost three decades, I have seen generations of children grow in confidence, curiosity and independence. That gives me a deep understanding of the school’s history, values and the trust families place in us.
We are academically ambitious, but our approach is calm, purposeful and rooted in a strong understanding of young children. We notice the details: who is ready for more challenge, who needs encouragement and who is quietly gaining confidence. That knowledge helps us provide an education that feels personal, attentive and ambitious.
How would the children describe you? I hope they would say that I am fair, approachable and take a genuine interest in them. They would probably also say that I have high expectations. I spend time around the school, in classrooms and in assemblies. Children should know
their Headteacher as a real person, not someone who only appears when something has gone wrong.
What are you most proud of at Hampstead Hill?
I am proud of the way the school combines warmth with high standards. We welcome children as individuals and support them to make strong progress from their own starting points. Success is not about who children are when they arrive, but about the confidence, knowledge and habits they develop with us.
Hampstead Hill has a long-standing reputation for preparing children very well for the next stage of education. For most families, this continues to mean 7+ entry to leading London schools. Our 7+ preparation remains important and families can be confident that children are prepared carefully, honestly and with ambition.
Education is changing and families are thinking about future schools in different ways. Our Prep provides an additional pathway beyond Year 2, with preparation for future opportunities including 8+, 11+ and occasional places where appropriate.
Our guidance remains centred on the child, helping families feel informed and confident about the route that is right for them.

What kind of education do you believe young children need? Young children need both security and stretch. They need to feel safe and understood, but also to learn that challenge is part of growth. Confidence does not come from removing every difficulty. It comes from helping children build the skills and self-belief to manage difficulties well.
What do you enjoy outside school?
I love being outdoors. Walking and hiking give me space to think and I enjoy wild swimming when I can. I love the Lake District, the Heath and St Ives in Cambridgeshire. I have a young grandson and spending time with him keeps me active. He reminds me, as the children at school do every day, how much there is still to learn from young children: their curiosity, humour and honesty.

Learning beyond the classroom
Learning does not have to stop when school ends. A walk to the park, a trip to the supermarket, baking in the kitchen or helping to wash the car can all build valuable skills. Some families enjoy creating themed weeks during the holidays and this can be a brilliant way to immerse children in a topic. One week might be all about volcanoes. You could

visit a museum together, get them to write to a volcanologist, build a volcano at home, read related books and create fact files or drawings inspired by what they have learned. This immersive approach allows children to make links between reading, writing, speaking, science, art and research in a way that feels exciting rather than forced.
Learning beyond the classroom can be purposeful. Counting coins matters if a child is buying an ice cream. Writing a list is important because the family needs to remember what to pack. These ordinary moments help children build confidence because the learning is immediate, useful and enjoyable.
Life skills, too, are an important part of learning outside the classroom. How do you catch a bus or a train? How do you read a timetable, buy a ticket and know when to get off? How do you plan a meal, shop for the ingredients and then cook it safely? These experiences involve reading, sequencing, money skills, problem solving and independence. They also help children feel more capable in the world around them. Perhaps the most important thing adults can do is slow down and notice the learning already happening. Ask open questions. Wonder aloud. Give children time to think. Follow their interests, even if they seem small. When we value learning everywhere, children begin to see themselves as capable learners everywhere too.
