Supporting the heart behind the child A new six-month support programme is helping mums of neurodiverse children feel more confident, supported and empowered.

Celebrating everyday histories Heritage Open Days returns from 11–20 September, inviting families and communities to discover fascinating places, stories and histories across England – all for FREE. The country’s largest festival of history and culture features thousands of events and experiences, brought to life by local organisations, volunteers and communities. It’s a chance to explore places that may not normally be open to the public, from museums and historic buildings to bunkers, lidos, canals and places of worship. Whether you’re discovering a hidden local landmark or learning more about the history on your doorstep, Heritage Open Days offers plenty of opportunities for curiosity and exploration. The festival is brought to you by the National Trust and supported by Postcode Lottery players.

Cleaner air linked to better lung growth Children living in London have shown significant improvements in lung development following the introduction of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), according to a landmark study involving more than 3,400 primary school pupils.

Researchers from Queen Mary University of London followed children aged six to nine over five years, comparing their lung health with children in Luton. At the beginning of the study, London children had smaller lung capacity. By the end, however, the difference had almost disappeared. The proportion of London children with clinically impaired lung capacity also fell from 14 percent to 9 percent. Scientists say the findings provide some of the strongest evidence yet that measures to improve air quality can help reduce the harmful effects of childhood air pollution.

Stitch, sew and create with new classes available This September, Stitches Academy are really pleased to be starting two new courses, Explore Embroidery and a Patchwork Club. Explore Embroidery will run on one Saturday every month until Christmas. Starting off with basic stitches and working up to using embellishments, beads and decorative stitches participants will explore different embroidery techniques and will go home with the tools and skills to keep going. Patchwork Club will take place one Friday night per month. During these sessions participants will cover lots of different patchwork techniques in a fun informal way, leading up to a session in December where we will make a seasonal project.

From book clubs and Lego to anime, art and gardening, today’s after-school activities look very different from the traditional football-or-nothing model many parents grew up with.

And increasingly, families aren’t just looking for ways to fill the 3pm to 6pm gap, they are searching for clubs that help children build confidence, friendships and real-world skills, while still feeling fun. New research* suggests parents are prioritising purpose-led, interest-based activities that reflect children’s personalities and passions, rather than pushing them into onesize-fits-all options.

In fact, music, reading and anime are now among the most indemand school clubs nationwide, with hobby-led and creative pursuits often ranking ahead of traditional sports. There’s growing enthusiasm for quieter, skill-based or interest-driven options, from fashion and dance to Lego and gardening, as parents look for screen-free, confidence-boosting ways for children to explore who they are. Let them choose what excites them. Children are far more likely to stick with an activity they’ve chosen themselves. Offer options and let them explore their interests rather than steering them toward what you think looks best. Focus on enjoyment, not performance. Classes and clubs should build confidence and friendships first. When the emphasis is on fun rather than achievement, children feel less pressure and are more willing to try something new. Start small. One club a week is often enough to begin with. Overloading schedules can lead to burnout and make after-school time feel like a chore.

Make music and build confidence

Try before committing. Many providers and schools offer taster sessions or trials. Testing a few activities helps children discover what suits their personality and strengths. Think beyond sport. While sports are popular, activities such as coding, drama, art, debating, eco clubs or volunteering can be just as valuable for building confidence, creativity and real-world skills. Make it social. Joining with a friend can ease nerves, especially for younger children or those trying something for the first time. Build it into the routine. Treat clubs as a normal part of the week, like homework or family time. Consistency helps children settle in and feel committed. Celebrate effort, not outcomes. Praise showing up, trying hard and learning something new. This reinforces resilience and a growth mindset rather than fear of failure. Keep communication open. Check in regularly with your child about how they’re finding it. If something isn’t working, it’s okay to adjust - the goal is positive engagement, not sticking it out unhappily. Lead by example. When children see parents pursuing hobbies or activities themselves, they’re more likely to value participation and personal development. September/October 2026

A smooth transition from the EYFS to Year 1 By Michelle Elliott and Chloe Willis Now that your child has finished Reception and is settling into Year 1, you might notice some changes in expectations from their school, as well as changes in your child’s daily routine and (most likely) in their mood! Year 1 teaching naturally shifts from the mostly play-based approach of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) towards the more formal structure of the National Curriculum. While schools are experts in managing this phased progression, it can still be a tricky move for your child. The most noticeable change in the first few weeks will likely be the classroom itself. In Reception, your child will have been used to continuous provision, both indoors and outdoors, where they explored and learnt through play, alongside short adult-led sessions such as phonics. In Year 1, tables and chairs are arranged for more focused, adult-led learning sessions, though many classrooms still allow for children to choose their own learning tasks at certain times of the school day. If your child is finding this change difficult, it might be worth talking to their teacher to get more of an idea about the classroom set up and daily routines. If your child is having problems settling during their first few weeks, the most important thing is to keep talking to them about the changes they are experiencing. Focus on supporting their independence, concentration and listening skills - the real foundations for a happy transition. Continue to build these skills at home through fun activities that require short bursts of attention, such as puzzles, colouring or enjoying a story together. You can also support your child’s sense of responsibility by encouraging them to take on small, manageable tasks, like helping to pack their school bag or tidying their toys, which will really help them find their feet as they navigate these early days of Year 1. Remember to make time to truly listen to your child too. Giving them space to share their feelings and then simply acknowledging those feelings, provides vital comfort and security during this time of change.

Finally, approach the move into Year 1 as an exciting new adventure! Highlight all the wonderful things they are doing, the new experiences they are sharing and the fun activities they are engaging with. Your positive attitude will be the greatest influence on theirs. Supporting your child with the transition Resist asking lots of questions straight after school. Children often need time to decompress after a busy day of listening and learning. Model talking about your own day. This can encourage your child to open up about theirs. Use a visual timetable. With new routines come a big adjustment; going through each day’s plan can be really helpful in settling in. Bring snacks. When you pick up your child, having a small snack to hand will replenish their energy and boost their mood. Enjoy family board games. These help your child concentrate for a sustained period of time, follow instructions and practise communication skills, all of which will help them through Year 1. Stick to a consistent bedtime routine. Having this structure will help your child get the rest they need to deal with the transition. Statutory school phone ban enforced from September

The government has placed the national school mobile phone ban on a statutory footing under the newly enacted Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act.

Primary schools in England are preparing for a major overhaul following the government’s formal backing of the independent Curriculum and Assessment Review. Under the incoming framework, scheduled for mandatory rollout in September 2028, citizenship education will become legally compulsory for primary pupils from Key Stage 1.

The new legislation officially came into force on 29 June 2026, meaning all state-funded schools across England must operate fully phone-free environments by default when the new academic year starts in September. While ministers argue legal backing eliminates classroom distractions, headteachers warn the mandate presents major implementation hurdles. The Association of School and College Leaders noted that over 90% of schools already restrict devices, proving the real challenge lies in daily enforcement rather than regulation. Local school leaders now face significant pressure to police “off and away” policies without dedicated funding for secure storage pouches or lockers. Furthermore, successfully managing parental resistance regarding emergency communication remains a hurdle as schools transition over to this stricter, legally binding regime.

The mandate also places a heavy emphasis on oracy - the ability to communicate effectively through spoken language - introducing a dedicated framework alongside traditional reading and writing. For the first time, the new primary curriculum will also require schools to teach media literacy, equipping children with critical thinking skills to spot online fake news and misinformation. While teaching unions welcome the focus on vital skills, leaders warn that primary timetables are severely overloaded. Accessible to teachers and parents, these living documents are designed to travel seamlessly with children between school years and education phases like a digital passport, preventing critical support from dropping during transitions. The national initiative is backed by a new £1.6 billion Inclusive Mainstream Fund designed to boost early intervention. While headteachers welcome the push to cut down the lengthy bureaucracy of traditional plans, many warn that school funding must match these rising operational demands. The Colour Run fun at Play BC Preschool

More than 60 children from its Wallington and Carshalton settings joined their families at a local park for sporting activities, parent races, a picnic and a colourful finale: the preschool’s Colour Run. The morning was all about enjoying being active together, while building children’s confidence, physical skills and teamwork through play. Children also raised an impressive £700 in sponsorship towards new outdoor and sports’ equipment. English five-year-olds among global best for literacy and numeracy Five-year-old children in England rank among the highest global performers in early literacy and numeracy, according to a major report by the OECD.

The study reveals that England’s young pupils achieved average scores of 515 in literacy and 529 in numeracy. These figures significantly exceed the 500-point international average, putting local children ahead of peers in most other developed nations. Researchers identified early access to childcare and frequent reading at home as the core drivers behind this strong academic performance. However, the findings also highlight a stark 70-point equity gap between the country’s most advantaged and disadvantaged children. Furthermore, the data shows that five-year-old girls continue to maintain a persistent developmental lead over boys across almost all early learning metrics.
