Inspiring every child to love books and reading

Footballer Leah Williamson and bestselling author Richard Osman are supporting the National Year of Reading 2026, launched by the National Literacy Trust to inspire children across the UK to ‘go all in’ on reading.

The campaign addresses the decline in reading for pleasure, with only one in three children now enjoying books.

Throughout the year, the initiative will feature author visits, book giveaways, and reading challenges, focusing especially on children in communities with limited access to books.

Schools and libraries are encouraged to create welcoming spaces, while families are supported to make reading a daily habit.

Williamson, Osman and other ambassadors aim to show that books can be exciting and relevant for every child. By encouraging a love of stories early on, the National Year of Reading hopes to build children’s literacy skills, confidence and future opportunities.

1st Cheam Scout Group urgently needs volunteers

The 1st Cheam Scout Group have operated in the heart of Cheam Village since 1928 and over almost 100 years have seen over 2,000 children pass through their doors.

There is a huge demand for places from young people. However, the 1st Cheam Scout Group are in a bit of a crisis due a shortage of adult volunteers to carry on running the group and now at a real risk of not being able to continue offering these great experiences to young people for much longer. ADHD drugs in children don’t work the way we thought

A new study from Washington University School of Medicine challenges long-held beliefs about how ADHD medications like Ritalin and Adderall work.

Using brain imaging data from nearly 5,800 children, the study showed that stimulants make tasks feel more rewarding and help children feel more alert, which indirectly helps them focus.

The study found that children with ADHD who took stimulants and were sleep deprived performed better on cognitive tests and had higher school grades than those who did not take medication. However, the researchers warn that masking the effects of poor sleep with stimulants could have long-term consequences, and they urge clinicians to consider sleep quality when evaluating and treating ADHD.

YouTube adds parental controls to limit shorts

YouTube has introduced a new set of parental controls, allowing parents to specifically manage, limit, or completely block access to YouTube Shorts for children and teenagers.

These tools, which include daily time limits, custom bedtime reminders, and “take a break” alerts, aim to curb endless, addictive scrolling and foster better digital wellbeing for users under 18. These options are meant to help families balance digital habits with school, sleep, and other daily needs.

These tools are available through YouTube supervised accounts, making it easier for parents to manage settings via Family Link. This update reflects growing concern over endless scrolling and how short videos impact attention and habits among younger users.

This annual campaign encourages individuals, schools, businesses and community groups across the UK to take action against litter by volunteering to clean up their local areas.

Teachers to be trained to spot misogyny

Teachers in England are set to receive additional training to help them identify and address misogyny in schools, under new government plans aimed at reducing violence against women and girls. The initiative will equip teachers to spot early signs of misogynistic attitudes among boys and intervene before such views escalate.

The strategy, part of broader efforts to halve violence against women within a decade, also includes education for students about consent, healthy relationships, and challenging harmful gender stereotypes. A new helpline will be launched to support teenagers worried about abuse in their relationships.

Polling cited by ministers shows one in six boys aged 13-15 hold positive views of Andrew Tate, a self-proclaimed misogynist influencer. Ministers say these measures will help protect girls and prevent boys from being drawn into harmful ideologies online. The government hopes early intervention in schools will stop misogyny before it leads to future abuse.

My child is preparing for the Sutton 11+. How is it different from other grammar school entrance exams and what should parents focus on?

Families LSB touches base with Sandra Nicol, Founder of Mock Test Masters for her insights.

The Sutton 11+ is one of the most competitive grammar school entrance exams in the country, particularly for schools such as Sutton Grammar, Wilson’s School, Wallington County Grammar School, Wallington High School for Girls, and Nonsuch High School for Girls. What makes Sutton distinctive is its strong emphasis on both academic depth and exam technique.

The Stage 1 test focuses on multiple choice English and Mathematics. However, these papers go beyond basic Key Stage 2 knowledge. Many maths questions assess problem solving and logical thinking, requiring pupils to apply their knowledge in unfamiliar situations. The English section places significant emphasis on vocabulary, comprehension, and inference. Children who read widely and regularly tend to have a clear advantage.

Another important factor is standardisation. Results are age standardised, and only the highest scoring pupils are invited to Stage 2 for certain schools. This means accuracy and consistency are critical, as small differences in marks can affect rankings significantly.

Parents should focus on securing strong core skills, building problem solving ability, and developing effective time management under exam conditions. Consistent preparation over time leads to the strongest outcomes and gives pupils the confidence needed to succeed.

The soul connection that begins before birth

For most parents, the bond with their child begins during pregnancy - at the first scan, or when the child is placed in their arms after birth. Both in my personal journey and in years of guiding women and couples, I have witnessed that connection often begins much earlier.

When we are willing to listen, that early communication can gently guide us toward the exact conditions our child needs to arrive.

At 18, I was diagnosed with PCOS and endometriosis and told I would likely not conceive naturally. After being prescribed the pill and advised to consider fertility treatment in the future I accepted the medical assessment. Yet internally, I sensed that my body carried deeper intelligence. By 28 I felt the presence of my future daughter and from that moment, my daughter’s soul began to guide me. Through dreams, somatic signals, and steady inner guidance, I understood what needed healing - physically, emotionally and energetically.

I worked with my body in partnership - clearing what was stagnant, nourishing what was depleted, and healing what was unresolved. My menstrual cycle returned naturally and shortly after my first spontaneous bleed in years, I conceived.

Today, I describe this as pre-conception communication - a conscious connection with the soul of the child preparing to arrive. In my work, I have seen this connection bring clarity, emotional healing and a deep sense of relationship before pregnancy even begins.

An early connection - before conception or during pregnancy - can create emotional grounding for the mother and may help prevent postpartum reactions such as depression or anxiety. When you connect with your child on a soul level before conception, that bond does not disappear. It deepens and strengthens through pregnancy and parenting.

Major overhaul in UK employment law

The UK’s Employment Rights Act is now law, marking the biggest overhaul of workplace protections in decades. For the first time, new parents will gain day-one rights to paternity leave, unpaid parental leave, sick pay, and bereavement leave, including for early pregnancy loss.

The Act strengthens legal protections for women during pregnancy and extends safeguards after maternity leave, aiming to close gaps that have pushed many mothers out of work. The legislation also tackles insecure employment, ending exploitative zero-hours contracts by introducing guaranteed hours, pay for cancelled shifts and more predictable schedules. These changes promise greater stability and security for families balancing work and childcare.

Most reforms will take effect from 2026 to 2027. Campaigners hail the Act as a historic milestone for parents’ rights but emphasise further steps are needed to eliminate workplace discrimination and achieve equality for all working families.

Authors back library card for every newborn

A group of prominent authors, including Richard Osman, Kate Mosse and Sir Philip Pullman, are backing a proposal for all UK babies to automatically receive a library card at birth.

The initiative, championed by the thinktank Cultural Policy Unit (CPU), seeks to make public library membership a universal birthright and foster a culture of reading from infancy. The CPU argues that ensuring every child has access to library resources can help tackle social inequality, especially as a recent National Literacy Trust report found children from lower-income families are much less likely to own books. The proposal includes a ‘library journey’ timeline, suggesting services for various child development stages, making libraries essential lifelong learning resources.

Early parenting linked to children’s long-term health

Science is showing us something powerful about families. New research from Pennsylvania State University followed families for years and found that when dads spent attentive, positive time with their babies, children had healthier hearts and bodies growing up

A warm start from fathers seems to matter for more than just smiles, it could lower kids’ risks for future health problems like diabetes and inflammation.

This does not mean mothers are not important. Instead, it suggests that dads’ early care makes a unique difference in the family’s well-being. Being present, showing patience and building daily connections can help not only your child’s emotional world but also their long-term health.

If you sometimes feel unsure as a father, remember even simple nurturing moments, reading together, listening, or gentle play, can make a powerful impact. Every shared laugh or quiet cuddle is an investment in your child’s future resilience. It is not about being perfect. It is about being present, even in small ways, starting now.

Scientists say memories change as the brain grows

It is true, your child’s earliest memories do not stay the same forever. Research shows that as young brains grow, memories can change and sometimes fade.

A study revealed children aged five to seven remembered more than sixty percent of special moments, but those memories often faded by age nine. This is a natural part of how the brain develops, but it does not mean you cannot help your child hold on to experiences a little longer.

Make naturally dyed Easter Eggs

Use plants to make beautiful earthy colours in this simple Easter project. It uses the hob, hot liquids and vinegar so do make sure an adult can help and supervise the kids - and make sure they understand the eggs are to decorate and not to eat!

You will need:

Per dye colour:

• 3 cups (750ml) water

• 2 tsp vinegar

• Pinch of salt

Natural dye ingredients (choose one):

Blue: 2 cups (500ml) chopped red cabbage

Red: 2 cups (500ml) red onion skins

Yellow: ¼ cup ground turmeric

Green: dye in blue first, then dye again in yellow

DID YOU KNOW?

Most bird eggs start white because the shell is made mainly from calcium carbonate. As the egg is formed inside the mother bird, special pigments are added to the outside of the shell, creating the colours and patterns we see. Plus:

• Eggs (hard-boiled or hollowed out)

• Saucepan

• Sieve/strainer

• Heatproof bowl or jug (for the dye)

• Glasses or small jars (one per egg)

• Spoon or tongs

• Paper towel

Optional: a little vegetable oil (for shine), apron/old clothes (turmeric stains!)

Step 1:

Prepare your eggs: hard-boil your eggs (about 10 minutes), then leave them to cool completely. For long-lasting decorations, use hollow eggs instead of hard boiled.

Step 2:

Make your dye: put your chosen dye ingredient into a saucepan. Add 3 cups (750 ml) water. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 minutes. Turn o the heat. Stir in 2 tsp vinegar and a pinch of salt (this helps the colour stick). Leave the dye to cool, then strain it into a bowl or jug.

Step 3:

Dye the eggs (for red, blue or yellow eggs): pour in enough dye to fully cover the egg. Leave to soak for at least 2 hours or overnight for deeper colour. Lift the egg out carefully and pat dry with paper towel. If you rinse, rinse very gently, too much water can wash o the colour. Leave the eggs to dry completely.

QUICK COLOUR GUIDE

Red onion skins → deep rust / burgundy

Red cabbage → soft blue-grey tones Turmeric → sunny yellow / golden orange

Blue + yellow → mossy green

Step 4:

Make green eggs (two-dye method): dye your egg in the blue (red cabbage) dye overnight. Let it dry, then dye it again in the yellow (turmeric) dye for about 2 hours. Pat dry and leave to dry fully.

Step 5:

Add a beautiful shine (optional): once your egg is totally dry, rub on a tiny drop of vegetable oil with your fingertips or a soft cloth.

Easter fun at the National Trust

It’s time to enjoy Easter egg trails at the National Trust. Trails run at Winkworth Arboretum and Claremont Landscape Garden from 21 March to 12 April. At Winkworth, Easter adventures get competitive as the ducks and the bunnies battle it out. Pick a side and challenge friends and family to fun activities. Meanwhile, discover the great Victorian Circus Easter Trail at Claremont. Find the strongman, tightrope walker, fortune teller and other circus acts in the Garden and help Bunny the Showman open the show.

Over at Hatchlands Park, the trail runs from 28 March to 12 April and the Easter egg hunt includes family challenges and games like egg-racing and welly-wanging.

Head to Polesden Lacey between 21 March and 14 April to join Grizwald the Griffin for Easter fun in the grounds. Follow the family trail, join in activities and receive a gift at the end.

Hunt for Easter eggs at Box Hill from 25 March to 12 April on a trail that runs through the wooded play trail with lots of activities and games along the way. Between 3 and 6 April you can also take part in the grand old tradition of egg rolling down the big hill. Bring your own fabulously decorated hardboiled egg to roll down the hill. Best decorated egg wins a prize.

Also between 3 and 6 April at Dapdune Wharf, join an art eggshibition, take a little eggsercise and eggsperiment with sowing a seed on an energetic Easter adventure trail for creative, active and nature-loving young visitors.

Elsewhere, at Hindhead Commons and the Devil’s Punchbowl, it’s time to look out for the Exmoor ponies as you enjoy an Easter trail adventure in nature with activities and challenges, running from 28 March to 12 April.

Spot signs of spring on the egg-stra special trail at Morden Hall Park between 1 and 6 April. It’s perfect for little chicks and grown up bunnies alike, this egg citing adventure is a whisk taking way to enjoy the great outdoors. And don’t mess the Quacky Races on 18 April. It’s one of the Park’s most popular traditions and helps raise valuable funds for its care. Your £2.50 entry sponsors a numbered plastic duck in the race down the River Wandle.
