Big Garden Birdwatch Returns in January

The UK’s largest citizen wildlife survey, the Big Garden Birdwatch, will take place from 23–25 January, the RSPB has announced. Now in its 47th year, the event invites people of all ages to spend one hour counting the birds they see in their gardens, balconies, or local parks and submit their sightings online. Launched in 1979 with the help of children’s TV programme Blue Peter, the Birdwatch has grown into a national tradition. More info: www.rspb.org.uk

Celebrate reading on World Book Day

NHS App simplifies child healthcare for parents

Parents across England can now manage their family’s healthcare more easily thanks to a new update to the NHS App. Announced in September 2025, the feature allows adults to switch between profiles for their children or dependents, similar to how streaming services like Netflix handle multiple users. The update means parents can book GP appointments, order prescriptions and view vaccination records for their children without needing separate logins. NHS England says the change is designed to simplify access and reduce administrative barriers, particularly for busy families juggling multiple healthcare needs. A full rollout is planned in 2026.

Help your child celebrate a love of reading on World Book Day, Thursday 5 March. Spark your child’s imagination and encourage them to read for pleasure and join in nationwide activities designed to make books exciting. Schools will distribute special £1 book tokens that children can swap for exclusive new titles or put towards any book in participating shops. Many schools also will invite students to dress up as favourite characters and host reading-related events.

Mothers lose pay after childbirth

Mothers in the UK lose an average of £65,618 in pay by the time their first child turnsfive, according to new research from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The Booker Prize Foundation has unveiled the Children’s Booker Prize, a major new award celebrating contemporary fiction for ages 8 to 12. The first winner will be announced in February 2027. The award attracts a £50,000 prize, equal to the adult Booker Prize and aims to inspire a new generation of readers. A shortlist of eight books will be announced in November, with at least thirty thousand copies of shortlisted and winning titles gifted to children across the UK and Ireland. 4

This significant loss highlights the so-called motherhood pay penalty which occursas many women reduce their working hours, switch to lower-paid jobs, or leave work altogether after having children. The analysis shows that mothers’ earnings fall sharply compared to childless women and fathers, mainly due to childcare responsibilities and a lack of flexible work options. Campaigners warn that the shortfall can have long-term impacts, including lower pensions and restricted career opportunities. Although the government has pledged expanded childcare support, critics argue it will not fully address the barriers that force mothers to compromise on earnings. The ONS study underscores persistent gender inequality in the UK workplace and points to a need for affordable childcare and greater flexibility for working families. Perseverance creates confidence

It’s completely normal for progress on the guitar to feel slow in the early months, however the truth is that at the beginner stage, consistency matters far more than long practice sessions. For most children who are new to the guitar, around 10–15 minutes of practice, four to five times a week is a realistic and healthy target. That might not sound like much, but young hands are still building strength, coordination and muscle memory. Even short, regular sessions help those skills develop steadily without turning practice into a battle. In the first few months, progress is often happening in ways that aren’t immediately obvious. Your child may be learning how to hold the instrument properly, press strings cleanly, change between chords and keep a steady rhythm. These foundations take time, and it’s common for improvements to appear suddenly after a period that feels flat. It’s also worth remembering that not all practice looks the same. Five minutes spent carefully changing between two chords, or playing along to a favourite song, can be just as valuable as a longer session of scales. At this stage, enjoyment is key. Children who associate music with pressure or frustration are far more likely to give up. If possible, ask the teacher what they expect between lessons. A clear, simple goal – such as mastering one chord or a short riff – can make practice feel achievable. Praising effort rather than results also makes a big difference. Finally, every child learns at their own pace. If your son is still enjoying his lessons, that’s a very good sign. With steady, manageable practice and a bit of patience, progress will come – often when you least expect it. Ashtead Ballet School think that performance is a key part of learning to dance. Their full school shows every two years are a highlight of the calendar and are guaranteed to cause huge excitement! As the smaller group dances are added into the larger scenes the younger children start to see how they are part of a bigger whole – dancing alongside senior girls in pointe shoes, other dance genres and age groups to bring a story to life. The weekly classes can seem disconnected from the rest of the school, but the shows are a time when everyone comes together to create magic (and fabulous memories!). Children missing out on outdoor play, study warns

A major study has found that children in the UK are spending significantly less time playing outdoors than previous generations, with many parents citing safety concerns, lack of green space and academic pressures as key barriers.

The study calls for schools, local councils and families to prioritise unstructured outdoor time, especially in early and primary years. Researchers urge policymakers to invest in safe, accessible play spaces and to recognise outdoor play as an essential part of childhood.

Ewell Castle Prep crowned 2025 IAPS National Football Champions

Ewell Castle Prep School, based in Ewell village just outside Epsom in Surrey, proudly celebrates its Boys’ U11 Football Team winning the IAPS (The Independent Association of Prep Schools) National Football Championships, emerging victorious from a competition involving over 600 Prep schools across the UK. After a day of intense matches, the boys faced a dramatic final against Danes Hill School, Oxshott. The match ended 1-1 after full-time, leading to a tense penalty shootout. Demonstrating composure and teamwork under pressure, Ewell Castle Prep triumphed in penalties to secure the national title. ASK THE EXPERT My son is at primary school, and I am concerned he has dyslexia. What are the signs of dyslexia in young/school-aged children? Dyslexia is a learning difference that primarily affects reading and language processing. In children aged 8 or 9, difficulties often become more noticeable as schoolwork becomes more reading intensive. While every child is unique, the following signs commonly appear in this age group. A key indicator is persistent trouble with reading accuracy and fluency. Children may read much more slowly than peers, guess at words, or struggle to decode unfamiliar words despite adequate instruction. They may also have difficulty recognizing common sight words and often lose their place while reading or skip lines of text. Spelling challenges are another frequent sign. A child with dyslexia may spell phonetically and inconsistently, producing different spellings of the same word within a single piece of writing. Writing tasks can feel unusually effortful, and handwriting may appear messy or poorly organized. Language-related difficulties can also emerge. These might include trouble remembering sequences - such as days of the week, instructions, or multi-step directions—as well as difficulty retrieving specific words during conversation. Some children mispronounce longer or unfamiliar words or confuse words that sound similar. In the classroom, a child may avoid reading aloud due to fear of making mistakes. They may show frustration, low confidence, or claim to ‘not enjoy reading’ because the task feels overwhelming compared to peers. Despite these struggles, many children with dyslexia demonstrate strong reasoning skills, creativity and problem-solving abilities. If several of these signs appear consistently, it’s helpful to seek a formal evaluation. Early years anxiety: the power of emotional connection By Stephanie Bradley In recent years, a quiet but powerful shift has been affecting our youngest learners. Children as young as ages 3 or 4 are increasingly showing signs of anxiety, low confidence and emotional dysregulation. These are not isolated cases and the trend is growing. Children today are facing challenges that often seem unimaginable for their age; the emotional demands on this group of learners are mounting. The impact may be subtle at first - withdrawn behaviour, tearfulness, tummy aches, avoidance - but if left unchecked, these early warning signals can develop into entrenched emotional difficulties. Recognising the signs of anxiety in the early years Anxiety in young children rarely announces itself clearly. It’s disguised by behaviours that might include acting up, sudden clinginess, speech regression, avoidance of group activities or difficulty settling into new situations. These are not ‘difficult behaviours;’ they are signals of emotional struggle in children who don’t have the vocabulary to talk about or even understand their feelings. That’s where early identification and emotional teaching become crucial. Why early intervention matters Research in child psychology and neuroscience tells us that early childhood is a critical period for emotional development. It is during these early years that children begin to form ideas about self-worth, belonging, empathy and how the world feels to them.

Early intervention isn’t just beneficial, it’s foundational. Emotional literacy should be treated with the same importance as learning to read or count. Waiting longer to address these challenges means working against years of deeply ingrained patterns. The role of social emotional learning (SEL) Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has become a cornerstone of early years education for good reason. SEL promotes the development of emotional intelligence, empathy, self-awareness and the ability to self-regulate. When SEL is embedded early in the education experience and children are guided to discuss their emotions, they are more engaged, more confident and more capable of navigating daily challenges. This isn’t about the grand gestures but the small ones: helping a friend tidy up, offering comfort to someone who is sad, saying ‘thank you’ or ‘well done.’ I’ve found that when kindness becomes a classroom norm, anxiety diminishes. Children begin to look out for each other. They feel safer, more valued, more included. And from that place of emotional safety, they are more willing to take learning risks, to participate, to grow. Kindness, empathy and connection are not soft skills. They are essential life tools. My experience already confirms that early emotional education changes lives. I’ve seen children who once cried every morning grow into confident classroom leaders. I’ve seen anxious children begin to open up when given safe ways to express themselves. And I’ve seen children with additional needs blossom when their feelings are acknowledged and respected.

Night time nappies to no nappies By Alicia Eaton Every parent looks forward to being able to throw away night-time nappies and pull-ups for good. Try these simple steps towards reaching this milestone. Words work. Explain to your child that soon they’ll be able to keep themselves dry all night and won’t need nappies/pullups. Putting the idea into your child’s mind triggers important thinking processes necessary to become dry at night. Regularly use phrases like: ‘Pretty soon, you’ll stop needing these at night-time…’ Step by step. Explain they will need to visit the bathroom instead. Walk through the steps they’ll take and practise this several times, telling them you will leave lights on so they can see their way easily. Deeper sleep. Avoid leaving night-lights on in the bedroom. A dark bedroom promotes deeper sleep patterns. This might be enough to ensure your child sleeps through without needing the toilet. Plan ahead. Put a date in the diary and let you child know when you will stop using nappies/pull-ups. These actually prevent children learning how to take control because their absorbency means your child’s skin doesn’t feel wet. Accidents. Use an absorbent bed mat in between two layers of sheets. If your child is wet, remove the top layer and use the dry bed underneath. Declutter. Ensure the bedroom floor is clutter-free so your child can easily move around at night. Drinks. Avoid drinks one hour before bedtime, but don’t restrict fluids during the day as this could make your child constipated - a common cause of bedwetting. Think food. Avoid fizzy drinks, sugary foods, milk and fruit such as strawberries, grapes and melon at night-time as these affect the bladder. Avoid rewards and bribes. They are a distraction and it will be doubly disappointing for your child if they’re not successful one night. Focus your child on learning how to stay dry at night. Keep track. Track dry and wet nights during your training period so you can figure out what the cause of wet nights might be. Their advice is always to try mediation first (where there is no domestic abuse) and if it breaks down, to try again. Divorce solicitors agree. Family court cases are notoriously expensive, long and stressful and it’s recognised that these stresses have a negative impact on children. But the full benefits of the mediation process are not always understood. Only Mums & Dads asked Louisa Dickson of Southern Family Mediation to explain them. Mediation is a way of resolving disagreements and making decisions about issues with the help of a specially trained Family Mediator so that you reach a situation acceptable to all parties, and avoid spending vast sums of money, time and emotional stress on going to court. Separating from your partner when you have children is not like falling out with a friend. They are in your life for the rest of your life, and so you need to find a way to go forward as harmoniously as possible. Mediation can help with: • • • •

Parenting arrangements for children after you break up – with whom/where/when they spend their time; Divorce; Child maintenance payments; Finances, eg your house, savings, pension or debts.

The alternative is going to court. Except the court isn’t there to decide on which days and times your children will spend with you and your ex. It’s there to decide on serious matters such as safeguarding. So mediation helps you both to stay in control. It’s about compromise and negotiation and saving time AND money. It means finding your own solutions, putting your love for your children before your dislike/hate of your ex, and offers an opportunity to resolve conflict and improve communication.

Tips for Choosing a Family Mediator Check costs: theses may be outlined on their websites. If not ask them what they charge. Also ask how long they would expect mediation to take, how many sessions and what the total cost could be. Make sure they are registered with the Family Mediation Council (FMC): all FMC mediators are trained, regulated and insured. On the web, you will find many claiming to be mediators but they may lack sufficient training or regulation and are best avoided. Check if they are a sole practitioner or part of a team: bigger teams can have more specialisms to deal with your particular family situation. Have an initial chat: everyone enters mediation with doubts and concerns and this is an ideal opportunity to talk these through. First impressions are important and it will give you the confidence to continue with the mediator you’ve chosen. Don’t rely solely on recommendations from friends/family: choosing the right mediator for you is very important and you will be the best judge. Your ex-partner will not be at the first meeting although you are allowed to take a family member or friend along for support.
