Dogs could help children improve their reading skills Many studies have shown that improving a child’s reading skills will tend to lead to a greater overall academic success and better life chances.
Wear A Hat Day is the UK’s premier brain tumour research fundraising event. It takes place on Thursday 29th March 2018. March is also UK Brain Tumour Awareness Month. Schools and families across the country get involved to help raise funds for research into brain tumors’.
There have been numerous schemes and initiatives aimed at boosting both interest in and aptitudes for reading but one of the most novel involves bringing four-legged helpers into the classroom. The practise originated in the US in 1999 with the Reading Education Assistance Dogs (READ) scheme. It was slower to catch on in the UK but has gained traction recently, with the Kennel Club’s Bark and Read Foundation being at the forefront. According to the Kennel Club, reading to dogs has been proven to help children develop literacy skills and build confidence, through ‘both the calming effect the dogs’ presence has on children and the fact that the dog will listen to the children read without being judgemental or critical’.
Brain tumors kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer… yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. Families are being left devastated by this dreadful disease. This is unacceptable! Brain Tumour Research is the only national charity in the UK that is purely dedicated to raising funds for continuous and sustainable scientific research into brain tumours.
Actress Zoe Wanamaker CBE, a supporter of the scheme, said: ‘That is why the Kennel Club’s Bark & Read project is such an inspiring idea, as we all know that dogs are great listeners and won’t judge if we stumble over a word.’
Taking part can be as simple as putting on a hat and donating on the day, but most families like to create entertaining fundraising events. Many schools for example have inventive hat competitions, parades and fashion shows and raise hundreds if not thousands of pounds. On average, organisations raise £250, with small ones £50 and some raising more than £2,000! Whatever target you set yourselves aim to smash it!! ADHD SUPPORT AND AWARENESS AT THE WEST WICKHAM CENTRE We spoke to a member of the West Wickham centre whose 10-year-old child has ADHD who explained how Explore Learning’s approach to tuition is helping build his confidence Explore Learning is helping to raise awareness of ADHD for parents, teachers, students, adults and professionals working with those affected. With increased awareness, more people can get the help they need to live better, more rewarding lives. Why did you decide to join Explore Learning? We joined Explore Learning a year ago as we felt that if we helped our child improve and strengthen his knowledge in English and maths, he would naturally feel more self-confident. We looked at some other study centres but as he enjoys learning with computers we felt the set-up at Explore provided a natural fit. What impact has Explore Learning had on your child and you as a family? Explore Learning has helped him realise that he can achieve what he sets out to. It has helped us provide him with extra education in an environment he enjoys and the positive re-enforcement helps
maintain a good learning environment for him. Are there any other key reasons why you like Explore? There is no competitiveness between the children which means they can learn at their own level without feeling pressurised or selfconscious. He also really likes his tutors and looks forward to the prize cabinet! What advice would you give to other parents whose children might have ADHD? It is important to take time to digest and accept the diagnosis of ADHD and only read the literature the consultant advises so you don’t become overwhelmed or misinformed. We found that focusing on and improving upon the areas our son enjoyed, whether academic or non-academic, helped increase his self-confidence. Also, it’s important to be honest and open with your child, to be consistent and to praise them, even if it’s for something small.
INFORMATION BOX: ‘My child was diagnosed with ADHD in September 2015 and then given a diagnosis of autism in January 2017. I contacted Mencap (a UK charity for people with a learning disability) to help me understand this diagnosis further and I have always been honest with my child about his diagnosis so that I can help empower him. At school, my child has shared access to a TA who helps him get to the correct classroom and to maintain his concentration. Unfortunately, this support is only in the mornings so the afternoons can sometimes be a bit of a challenge, but since joining Explore Learning his confidence has improved, which has helped with this.’

BROMLEY HIGH’S YEAR 6 RISE TO THE JOHN LEWIS INNOVATION CHALLENGE A couple of weeks ago a cohort of Year 6 pupils from Bromley High School completed the John Lewis Innovation challenge - the brief was to design a community hub for the benefit of John Lewis and the community. The teams undertook the challenge during Year 6 Enterprise Week, an annual initiative to help the girls develop their enterprise skills. They also devoted 10 hours of curriculum time to the challenge. Dr Garcia, a Bromley parent and lecturer at the London School of Economics, enlightened the girls about the process of team-building - Form, Storm, Norm and Perform - and the different roles within a team to ensure success. Each team submitted their competition entry, a mix of film, artwork and the written word. The school submitted eleven entries to the national competition for 9 - 11 year olds. Six of these made it to the final shortlist and the school took 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th places! Second place was taken by Howell’s School, securing a clean
sweep for the GDST. The winning team’s design provided local start-up businesses with the opportunity to showcase and sell their products with the possibility of running workshops alongside. Amelia Rand, Grace Wu, Olivia Hillman and Zara Aslam won a tablet each and a 3D printer for the school. In total, the school’s shortlisted entries won a total of £900 of John Lewis vouchers. They received great advice on leadership skills and how to work successfully in a busy team, coping with time pressures. They enjoyed seeing the working environment in action and meeting some of the people who had viewed all the entries and been part of the judging process.
Another fantastic year for Trinity School’s A Level results In a year of significant changes to A level examinations, students from Trinity School, Croydon achieved excellent results. 91% of grades were A*, A or B, with 23% of entries awarded the top A* grade. 50 students achieved three A grades or better, and 9 students achieved three or more A*grades. The School achieved a 100% pass rate for the ninth year in row. Alasdair Kennedy, Trinity’s Headmaster, said: “With the support of their teachers, friends and families, this group of students worked hard, and they deserve this success. The vast majority of our leavers will now move to their chosen universities or colleges, and we hope they will continue to thrive in the next stage of their education”. lubs and classes are a great way to continue your child’s development, as well as allow them to have fun, get exercise, socialise with others, and take part in activities they might not have the chance to at home. There are a huge range of different clubs and classes on offer, and while they may be better suited for some children better than others, all of them are designed to be fun and useful for developing vital skills for your children. Here are just a few of the clubs and classes on offer, and some of the benefits they can bring. Take a look at the list to find out which ones are best suited for your little one. RUGBY Rugby isn’t just for boys - it’s for girls too. Rugby is a great way for children to have fun and get exercise while learning to work and function as part of a team. Your children can learn a wide variety of skills from the sport, including respect, winning and losing, and working together. All of these come together to make a great, enjoyable experience. DRAMA Drama is always hugely popular with children and really helps younger people release their creative thoughts and let their imagination run wild. Always fun and engaging, it’s also a great way to help children develop their own sense of self, confidence and self-esteem - even shy children love taking part. It can also be a great way to develop an interest in other forms of art. MARTIAL ARTS Martial arts are a great way to help develop confidence in children, as well as learning values like discipline and patience. Teaching responsible self-defence helps to benefit children enormously, and it’s a great and fun way to get exercise too. SPORTS FOR ADHD ADHD can make it difficult for some children to engage in organised

activities and team sports. Not all sports are well suited to children with ADHD traits, and not all coaches and supervisors are understanding about the difficulties associated with the condition. There are specific programs specifically designed for children with ADHD, using sports that are well suited to the different challenges posed by those with the condition. They help them to participate in team sports, making it a fun experience and a great opportunity for exercise, learning, and development. BROWNIES Joining the Brownies is a great way to get your child to experience the outdoors and engage and socialise with others. Studies have shown that scouting organisations help children with their mental health in later life, and with the huge range of activities on offer in Brownies, and great fun ways to learn, you’ll be sure to get your children off to a good start. CUBS The Cubs are a great way to keep restless young minds and bodies active as they learn about and participate in a huge variety of different activities. As well as learning skills, it’s also a great way to get your child to exercise and work with others. TRAMPOLINING Trampolining is always popular among

children, but it’s also a great fun way to get exercise. Under supervision, and learning different moves on the trampoline, it can be the perfect way to get into gymnastics and other athletics too - as well as being healthy and fun in its own right. As well as the joys of music, it’s also a great way to learn other related abilities - like patience, discipline, and social and physical skills. BABY AND TODDLER PHYSICAL SENSORY CLASSES Great for very young children, this class allows you to explore a multisensory environment with your child, with organised activities in place for you to enjoy as well as the freedom to explore. In the play area, your child can benefit from physical activity, learn to make friends with others, and have plenty of fun while doing so.
