Alternatives to Family Litigation Within the Family Law remit, many separating couples would prefer to try and resolve matters using nonconfrontational, conciliatory methods in order to try and maintain an amicable relationship going forward, especially if they have children. Mediation has been available for a number of years and can assist with decisions that have to be made regarding many issues including matters pertaining to finances and the arrangements for children that arise following separation or divorce. Mediation involves an impartial third party helping the parties to reach these arrangements in a fair and safe environment. The agreement, if one is reached, can then be incorporated into a detailed written summary, which can be made legally binding.

Another, route that parties are now seeking to engage with is a process called Early Neutral Evaluation. In circumstances where mediation is not suitable or the matters to be decided are both factually and legally complex, parties sometimes need firmer guidance and would prefer to jointly agree to attend with an experienced family barrister who would hear representations from both parties and would give a non-binding indication as to outcome should the matter be litigated. How to get your child involved in coding Computers and technology are fast taking over the modern world, and becoming an integral part of our lives. While previous generations didn’t have access to this technology until they grew older, nowadays computer sciences are present in children’s lives from a much younger age. As a result, it’s becoming vital to educate our children correctly, making them more aware and safe as they grow, and preparing them for future developments and industries as they reach adulthood. What is coding? First of all, what exactly is coding and what is it used for? Coding can be difficult to understand, as there is no limit to how advanced and detailed it is. But coding is basically what makes the programmes in computer systems and technology that we use every day. It tells our computers and smartphones what to do; from setting a spin cycle on a washing machine to sending an email on your laptop, coding is the building blocks of all technology. So why do our children need to learn to code? Teaching children coding is quickly becoming a vital part of their education, and is even now a part of the national curriculum. It teaches them basic life skills as well as preparing them for the future. Even at a basic level, coding and programming are difficult. For children, learning at a young age will test them and encourage them to think differently in order to work around a problem. Coding is a great way for children to develop important problem-solving skills, in a way which interests and fulfils them. After learning the basics for yourself, you will quickly recognise the similarities between learning to code and learning another language. Understanding the rules and structures of the HTML codes teaches children how languages are created and differ from each other. Learning these at a young age opens a child’s mind when it comes to understanding foreign languages, and can make it

easier for them to understand these later on. Technology is such a vital part of our lives now, and it will only continue to develop more as time goes on. So, computer skills are a fundamental part of a child’s education in order for them to continue to understand the modern world and thrive in it. With more careers available in technology than ever before, computer sciences are becoming as important for job opportunities as sciences and languages. Engineers, computer technicians, web developers and scientists all use coding and programming in their daily work life, and more jobs and careers are being created as technology develops further. How can you teach coding to your child? Any child that can use a smartphone or tablet can learn some level of coding and programming. There are many ways to teach them the basics and into further developments, but as with any learning, it needs to be fun and interesting. For many children, coding can become a hobby and passion in their life, often without them even realising the importance of what they are learning. Here are a couple of ways to help your little ones grow in the subject of coding: Daisy the Dinosaur app This free app is ideal for younger children and teaches them the very basics of coding while making it feel like a fun and colourful game. They quickly pick up the rules and methods, while making Daisy the dinosaur dance around on the screen and follow the instructions. Hopscotch Created by the same people as Daisy the Dinosaur, this app is ideal for teaching

yourself and your children the coding basics in a slightly more in depth way. This app has won many awards, such as ‘Parents Magazine: Best Apps for Families’ and ‘Children’s Technology Review: Best Educational Technology’, so is essential for most families. It allows children to make and play on their own games, publishing them online for others to see as well. Code.org This webs ite was launched in 2013 with the aim to expand access to computer science developments. The creators want to increase the diversity of programmers, and encourage young girls and underrepresented minorities to become more involved in coding. With a multitude of online courses and useful information, this site is brilliant for learning at home and in the classroom. There are many other apps, games and websites with endless resources for both your children and you to learn coding and develop your understanding of technology. As a parent, learning alongside your child will not only allow you to expand your own knowledge, but it will encourage them to take an interest. Work together through tasks and games, keeping the emphasis on fun. You will be surprised at how quickly they pick up the basics! With the modern world developing around us, and a technology-heavy future ahead of us, programming is an excellent way of teaching children basic skills and preparing them for a brighter future. TAKE THE FEAR OUT OF EXAMS IN 2017 We all know that the lead up to exam season can be a daunting and stressful time for child and parent. With children encountering phonics screening checks, teacher assessments and SATs by the time they reach the end of primary school, you might wonder how best to support your child through exams - and you certainly aren’t alone! In a recent, independent study by Explore Learning, while 90% of British parents said exam results are important to their child’s future, only 1 in 4 parents felt their child’s exam performance actually reflects their true ability, and 2 in 3 parents admitted that their child has suffered from exam stress. Although there is no magic formula for exam success, there are many ways to help children feel prepared and confident about assessments. Here are a few of our top tips: Plan ahead – This is the key to kick-starting any successful exam preparation. Blocking out periods of time to ‘cram’ for an exam might save time but it won’t assist your child’s retention

of information long term. Revisiting a range of subject areas in manageable, weekly chunks can be much more beneficial to supporting memory, skills, and confidence. Find the right way for your child - It is important to understand that everyone learns and revises in their own way. Some children like to visualise their work so sticky notes around the house and visual representations might be useful, whereas others will respond better to you asking them questions and to explain a paragraph in their own words. Some children will switch on bright and early, while others will be ready to learn later on in the day. Find the learning style and pattern that works for your child, with their input, and create a plan to suit their individual need. Positive thinking - Finally, be sure to remain positive throughout exam preparations and praise them when you see them accomplish something great: hearing things like “brilliant reading” or “you’ve done a fantastic job explaining that method to me” will undoubtedly

THE BENEFITS OF LEARNING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT Learning an instrument can have benefits for your child that you may not have considered. By Sally J. Hall

Discover the benefits that can be gained from your little musician learning to play their favourite instrument... It makes them more intelligent, with better memories The mental and physical processes happening inside your child’s brain when they learn to play an instrument seem help them with problem solving. It’s also believed these children tend to do better in other subjects including: maths, science and learning a foreign language in particular. A 19971 study found that children who took part piano lessons performed better in spatial-temporal tests when compared to peers taking computer lessons. Music also helps with memory; singing a list is often more successful than writing it down. An improvement in social skills Playing music is a great way to make friends. Not only are children who play instruments encouraged to join

groups and orchestras at school but you’ll often find them getting together outside of school hours too. Music draws children together from different backgrounds and creates a common bond. They have improved motor skills Creating notes from an instrument, whether it’s brass, woodwind, percussion or strings, helps a child finetune motor skills. Minute movements of the hands and fingers are believed to help create neurological pathways in the brain. In fact, studies have suggested that playing an instrument may enhance motor skills for the player’s whole life2. A confidence boost There’s no doubt that a child who feels they can manage a task – such as performing a simple tune – is filled with confidence. As their skill improves and practice pays off, your child will see a huge confidence boost, which will help them to become a more self-assured as they grow.

Persistence is taught Learning an instrument is a slow, sometimes arduous task and the traits that children must acquire are patience and the ability to practice. These skills are transferable to many other tasks they will come up against later in life. They become creative and have a sense of achievement Once a child has mastered making sounds from their instrument, they often begin to experiment. Although they may never be an improvisational genius, this leads to creativity, which in turn creates a sense of achievement. Posture awareness through Pilates I love teaching Pilates because I believe I help my clients with many things including becoming more aware of their bodies, how it feels and in particular their posture - how do they hold themselves? Many people come to me complaining of back ache, shoulder pain, hip pain and knee pain these being the most common ailments, amongst an endless list! When clients mention this to me I like to study their posture - particularly how they stand, how they position and hold themselves, because herein lie many clues as to what strains and stresses are placed on the various joints. Just like a new building has to be built taking into consideration the gravitational and natural forces placed against it, so too does the human musculoskeletal structure. Are the hips thrusting forward? Are the legs swaying backwards? Is the upper back thrusting backwards and the neck pulling forwards? Do they put their weight mainly on one leg? Is the hip hitching up? Are they stooping forwards? Placing the body under these unnecessary strains will create stresses on various joints as the muscles supporting the joints will not be functioning correctly nor will they be in synergy with each other. I have had clients with whom some simple adjustments to their posture, on which we work together once they are identified, have resolved the original pain that led them to Pilates in the first place. Charlotte, one of my clients, was one such client who not only suffered from back pain due to a prolapsed disc, but also locked her knees which sent her pelvis tucking under and thrusting forwards. I was barely able to

sit down, had to eat standing up, lie on the floor during the evening and take constant painkillers, even during the night. I’d taken one of Ismini’s Pilates classes before and knew that she specialised in back care. I called Ismini in desperation and I had a couple of one to one sessions. At first, I struggled to lift my affected leg more than a few inches off the floor and my back was totally inflexible. Ismini gave me a number of exercises to do at home and advised that I did three Pilates classes a week to get me moving again. A scan revealed that I had a large prolapsed disc in my lumbar spine, but Ismini knew exactly what would help. She was encouraging and reassuring and every week she would manage to stretch my leg slightly higher off the floor and get more movement in my spine. Over a period of three months, my sciatica slowly but surely improved and I would really look forward to my sessions. As well as knowing that I would benefit from the classes, Ismini’s positivity and humour meant the classes were really enjoyable and good fun. 1
