Teeny Tiny Toddler Fest
Last year over half a million people took part in the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch, spotting more than 8.5 million birds across the UK, and the organisers are hoping this year's watch will be a record-breaking event. This year's survey takes part on 30 and 31 January. To take part, simply spend one hour counting the birds in your garden or local park, and record the highest number of each bird species seen at any one time. Camera Obscura and World of Illusions will once again transform into the place to be for toddlers (and their grown-ups). Teeny Tiny Toddler Fest was so popular in January 2015 that we are extending the opening hours, Camera Obscura and World of Illusions will open at 9.30 every morning of Teeny Tiny Toddler Fest ’16, because we know that toddlers aren’t big on sleeping in. Come and enjoy the six floors of interactive exhibits. The development team are working on some exciting new exhibits especially for toddlers; a giant bubble tube, colour changing cubes, and a baby kaleidoscope. Bringing up Baby, Dads2b Rock, Dads Antenatal, New Dads Rock
Each year there are approximately 9000 babies born in Edinburgh and now for the first time new dads to be will have the chance to take part in free antenatal classes designed specifically for them. Local award winning charity Dads Rock who currently run free playgroups for Dads/Granddads and other male carers have teamed up with NHS Lothian to deliver antenatal classes for new dads. The Wester Hailes based classes will give dads the chance to practice bathing the baby, as well as how to put on a nappy, and sooth the new born. Dads will also be given the chance to talk about how post natal depression impacts both dads and mums. The classes will be a mix of practical and essential softer skills for new dads, giving them hands on experience, and sharing tips from existing dads on how best to support mums. The classes will also give the dads a chance to ask any questions and discuss what they can expect about being a new parent. The classes will be based in Wester Hailes Healthy Living Centre, on Monday evenings starting on the 18th of January. They run for four weeks and will be on until the end of October 2016. What makes this place so special is the setup of the 6 stylish gites and the safety within the walled garden. Each of the gites have a patio facing the communal walled garden with a fantastic wooden play house, ride on toys, climbing tree, tree swings, slides, and trampoline as well as a view to the heated swimming pools. There is a new enlarged pool with contemporary designed terrasse as well as a new shallow baby and toddler pool. Both pools are heated and enclosed with a secure fence and child safe lock. La Garenne has a purpose build play area fully equipped with soft toys and a soft cushioned floor for the under 5’s. A decking out side has been created so parents can sit and enjoy the sun with French doors open into the soft play. There are lots of organised activities at La Garenne such as kids club for the over 3’s, free play activity for the under 5s (from mid may – mid July and through out September). Babysitting can also be arranged. Added activity for 2016 is a kids swim school taught by qualified staff. An arrivals meal can be pre - ordered making your travel much easier and one evening during the week you can order a delicious 3 course meal to enjoy on your private patio, while the children play in the garden or are safely tucked up in bed. Charente Maritime is the second sunniest department in France so warm weather is to be enjoyed throughout May – October. Airports near by are Poitiers, La Rochelle and Bordeaux. The 6th amazing weekend-long community science festival for families in southeast Scotland will lead into British Science Week. We are building upon the phenomenal success of last year’s festival, where an extraordinary mix of 90 event providers delivered over 100 different events over 11 days to 10,500 visitors. The Dunbar SciFest 2016 Weekend is Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 March 2016 (10am - 5pm both days) in the John Muir Campus of Dunbar Primary School and the Bleachingfield Community Centre, with cafes in both venues. Get stuck into wacky workshops, sit back and enjoy science stage shows and have family fun at diverse drop-in sessions. For underfives, there’s storytelling and soft play. The stage shows are presented in British Sign Language or are BSL-English interpreted. SCI-FUN, the University of Edinburgh’s Scottish Science and Technology Roadshow will take over the Bleachingfield Community Centre with 50 interactive science activities that will keep you entertained for hours. After a day full of fun, stay on for our Light Nights - a family evening event (Friday 4, Saturday 5 & Sunday 6 March). Families loved the stunning 'Magic Lantern' light installation and projection at Barn Ness Lighthouse in 2015. This year, we will be projecting onto Torness Power Station to celebrate Scottish Year of Innovation, Architecture & Design. Favorite shop: The award winning Edinburgh Bookshop for sure! We are so lucky to have the 2014 UK Children’s Bookshop right on our doorstep. What Marie and her team don’t know about books and reading isn’t worth knowing. It’s a terrific place for the children – to hang out and enjoy story time when they were younger and to discover exiting new reads now they are older and have learnt to read. Favourite park: Beecraigs in West Lothian – imaginative play and a great location. Although watching my 5 year old slip from almost the very top of the climbing frame – to be caught by a well placed teenager! – was a little heart stopping. No harm done. Favourite children’s club/class: Skiing lessons at the Midlothian Ski Centre. Only a 15 minute drive from where we live we are very lucky to have this facility close by and that it offers tuition and activities at very reasonable prices. The tutors are great, the lessons are fun and most importantly of all the children love the fresh air and exercise. Favourite day out: At the risk of repeating myself, skiing during a good Scottish season. Absolutely nothing beats skiing down behind your children (to be honest, trying to keep up!) listening to them singing at the top of their voices. “Come on Mummy!” Favourite child friendly restaurant: Now the children are older it’s not about baby change, plastic crockery and from-the-freezer sausage and mash. It’s about tasty food in suitable portion sizes in a pleasant surrounding – what you’re after as an adult. Locally, Nonna’s Kitchen at Churchill has it right as does The Three Birds here in Bruntsfield. Further afield C Shack at Newhaven hits the spot – we are a family of seafood lovers. Proudest eco-friendly moment: We try and encourage the children to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible – so from recycling every scrap of drawn on paper to being responsible for taking out the recycling every morning on the way out to school, to passing on toys they’ve grown out…it’s not rocket science, but every little really does help. No parent should be without: a pack of playing cards – small enough for your pocket or handbag and with a multitude of inventive activities and games to pass the time.

Parenting pet hates: I have two: 1. parents who when out divest themselves of any sort of parenting responsibility; and 2. Passive aggressive parents who address their own children but who are really aiming their comments at other parents! Parenting high points (what makes it all worthwhile): The spontaneous “I love you”, “Thank you, this supper is delicious” and “This has been the best day ever” as well as happy days spent together as a family Funniest comment: “But the good news Mummy, is at least we are still alive” – what?! Favourite family holiday spot: In Scotland, my brother’s in Deeside, where there is great countryside to explore and enjoy in all manner of ways – from walking to thrilling Land Rover rides to skiing…and more. Although we do love a beach and this is a bit far from one, so in the UK, we’ve just had a terrific holiday on the Cornish coast this summer – absolutely brilliant. Further afield we had a lovely holiday in Sardinia that seems to have really stuck in the children’s memory – perhaps it was the never ending sunshine and the island’s beautiful coastline, what’s not to like?! Best children’s book: Anything by Roadl Dahl seems to go down very well in our house – a joy to read aloud as well as to read on their own. Best DVD: Mary Poppins was very well watched for a while when they were younger (roll on the show in Edinburgh) although more recently The Lego Movie was awesome. Most played with toys: Lego, of course; 2. Sylvanians (can’t see the appeal myself) and the innovative Danish Plus Plus. Biggest waste of money: Soft toys. Never bought any for the children, always seemed to be given them. Hideous things that stare weirdly at you. Why you like living where you do: Bruntsfield has a great community of residents, traders, schools and activities all of whom are proud of and contribute to the area. Many of our independent businesses are destination shops that bring people from further afield into Bruntsfield and keep it thriving. It’s a lovely place to raise a family with open spaces within easy reach and only a 15 minute drive out of town to the Pentlands and beyond. My husband and I have travelled round the world and we were delighted to finally hang up our rucksacks back here in Bruntsfield.

What Speech and Language Therapists do that you don’t know Speech and Language Therapists work in many different settings including primary and secondary schools. Many children will require some level of help in their time at school for a number of reasons. Figures from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists quote 5% of children enter school with difficulties in speech and language and communication difficulties. Children can be referred for many reasons and a therapist will assess and work with children and young adults to help them communicate to the best of their abilities. Difficulties include problems with receptive (understanding) and expressive language, speech sound difficulties such as lisps etc and social communication difficulties. One disorder that is treated often in a school setting is that of Specific Language Impairment (SLI). SLI is condition which is associated with difficulties in learning and using language. These specific issues however are not associated with factors such as general learning problems, or other conditions, such as hearing impairment, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, or autistic spectrum disorders. Often children with SLI are as clever as any other child of their age but have significant speech and language difficulties, their problems are related to this one area of learning only. We do not know where this comes from and there is often no explanation. So what should we look out for? • A child with SLI might be bright, but struggle to comprehend and follow the language used around them in school • Often they have lots of ideas but cannot remember or find and use the words to say what they are thinking • Children may seem to lose their train of thought and sound confused; it can be difficult to follow what they are saying • These children can find it hard to join in and follow what is going on in the playground • They may be anxious and aware of their difficulties and have problems socialising Speech Therapists work closely with children, their parents and teachers to improve all areas of communication for the child including their understanding of vocabulary, following instructions, expressing themselves and forming good social relationships. So how can we help? Children with Specific Language Impairment won’t learn language in the same way as their peers. They need additional teaching and support; language taught in a specific way. Speech and Language Therapists can see the child at school and through games, 1 to 1 teaching, support in the classroom and working with teachers, improve communication abilities. This support can be given through school and at home and a child with SLI can learn and develop to their full potential. It is essential they receive some input from a team of experts including Speech and Language Therapists. Of course some children may have difficulties which look like SLI and the ones described but are actually something else. If you have concerns or doubts you should discuss these with your child’s school and they may make a referral if needed.
Another area of work Speech and Language Therapists do surrounds the social use of language, an area called pragmatics. This is the use of language in a social context, knowing what to say and when. These are the skills we all take for granted, how to greet someone appropriately, how to begin a conversations and how to keep it going. Some children may find it hard to interact with others in a socially appropriate way. They may; • not have many friends and not get invited to parties • seem a lot more interested in themselves than in other people, often talking about something that only interests them or about themselves. • Not have good understanding of the person they are talking to; unable to read social cues such as signs of boredom and uncomfortableness, even anger • They may assume others have common knowledge and will follow what they are saying although this is confusing to those listening to them • Get on better with adults who support their interactions These difficulties are often associated with autism spectrum disorder although not exclusively. As a therapist there are many techniques and programmes we would use to improve these skills. We can use social stories, one to one input discussing topics such as why we use eye contact, what a good friend is, personal space, identifying emotions, starting, maintaining and ending conversations, using appropriate topics and many more. Simple steps to looking after your child’s feet As a nation, we are very good at looking after our children’s teeth, yet for some reason, we are putting foot care further and further down the priority list. Podiatrists see so many problem feet walking in their doors nowadays, often as a result of poor footwear choice. Here are five keys things to consider when it comes to looking after your child’s feet. Growth and Development On average a child under four will move up to two sizes a year and then one a year thereafter until their feet stop growing. The human foot is a highly complex structure, composed of 26 bones working together to allow the foot to adapt to uneven walking surfaces, and acting as a shock absorber with each step. These bones are usually fully hardened by the age of 18. In the newborn, the foot is composed mainly of relatively soft and flexible cartilage which gradually converts to bone with age. During this period of development, the foot can be at risk from injury and deformity due to ill-fitting footwear and great care should be taken with shoe types and shoe fitting. www.feetforlife.org
Don’t put fashion and price before fit Nowadays we tend not to consider the importance of the biomechanical structure of the shoes that our children wear. Many parents are drawn to purchasing a fashionable shoe for their child, or an off the rack shoe from a supermarket or chain store, not realising that many of the not so obvious benefits of a good shoe are missing. These shoes are often very flat and therefore don’t offer any shock absorption for little feet. They aren’t likely to offer sufficient support, adequate width, and more importantly, won’t provide the correct positioning of the foot.
Invest in a pair of quality leather shoes Cheaper shoes are more often than not made out of poor quality materials. Very few will be all leather, and the result is that they tend to be very inflexible, not breathable, and nowhere near as durable. Subsequently the shoes tend to last only a short period of time and a second purchase is needed very quickly – so buying cheaper shoes is normally a false economy. There are many quality brands such as Start-rite, available from proper children’s shoe shops, who offer hard wearing, full leather shoes starting from £36. If time is an issue, find a kid’s shoe shops that offers an appointment service, and book a time that suits you.
Visit a shop with a fully trained shoe fitter Factors such as width and depth of a foot, height of the instep as well as position of the ankle bone and width of the heel all play a crucial role in the selection of the right shoe. A child with a narrow heel, for example, can find it very difficult to get a shoe that fits well and holds their foot in the correct position. A small child with a high instep may find it very difficult to fit their foot in to a shoe. Going up a size is very often not the right solution. An experienced fitter will find the style of shoe that accommodates this shape of foot - their expertise is priceless.
Keep an eye on your child’s foot health If you see pressure sores, hard skin, toe nails that are curling in, swing by your local children’s shoe shop and get them to measure your child’s feet and check that these problems aren’t coming from shoes that no longer fit. Podiatrists recommend that children get their feet measured roughly every 8 weeks. If your child’s feet are excessively sweaty, check their socks and tights to make sure that they aren’t made purely from poor quality synthetic materials. If little toes start to look red, a quick check of their socks can sometimes reveal unfinished seams at the toes and often trimming the seam or wearing the sock inside out solves the problem. Have you got TALENT? If you are looking to get back into the work place or change jobs in 2016 the one word that you will see appearing through recruitment processes will be ‘Talent’. This doesn’t mean that companies are looking for you to break into song or eat fire; however it does pose the question - “Do you know what your talents offer an organisation?” During the job market downturn, businesses survived by honing their talents both in their business models and their people. They became leaner not only in their processes, but also by utilising the talents in full of the people who delivered them, effectively working smarter to bring better results with fewer resources. Now that markets generally are more buoyant and as people look to progress their careers, developing future leaders, succession planning and keeping the best team members engaged and motivated are essential building blocks for every organisation to meet their objectives and strategic goals. Organisations need to have the right mix of talents in their teams.
Knowing what your ‘Talent’ is will help you build a successful career in the right organisation. You may not have to move companies - explore career opportunities with your current employer fully, you may already be in the right place, just the wrong position. Having identified and invested in people the last thing an organisation wants is to lose them and go back to the drawing board as this costs time, money and, worst case scenario, customers. Finding specialised talent is becoming more challenging and therefore many organisations recognise that investing in their existing employees is more beneficial than losing them, so look at what is available to you where you are. So what is your ‘Talent’ and how can you place yourself in an organisation that will invest and nurture it? Ask yourself some questions and write the answers down. For example: • Are you good with people or do you prefer to work on your own? • Do you have an attention to detail or do you see the whole picture with little need for detail? • Are you a motivational influence? • Are you an expert in your field? • Do you lead or prefer to follow? This will start to build a picture you can expand on and clearly highlights areas where you can add value as these come naturally to you. Research the type of organisations you want to work with to make sure they are aligned with your values and above all will support your expectations of work / life balance. Ideally get a detailed job specification for the role you are applying and check it matches your identified talents. You now also have a good foundation for a successful interview as you will be in a position to talk confidently about your talents and why they are a good match to the organisation and vacancy. This takes the strain away of ‘selling’ yourself at interview as most people find that aspect off putting and yet it’s simply about understanding the value of your talent to others.

Time Saving Tips for busy parents by Catherine Fitch
These are some great time saving tips that I use to help me take some of the pressure of the household chores, I hope you like them and they work for you too! • Place a flat sheet between your duvet and fitted sheet, this keep your duvet cover fresher for longer so you only need to change the flat sheet & pillow cases more regularly and the duvet less so. This cuts down on washing and bed making which is a double whammy for time saving. • Every time I boil the kettle to make a cuppa, I quickly spay the sink and use the excess boiling water from the kettle and pour it round the sink. It takes seconds and keep the sink from building up scum so less time required to scrub it out. Leaves your sink gleaming and smelling fresh too. • Just have one multi-purpose cleaning product rather than lots of different ones. The time it saves carrying one bottle round for all cleaning tasks (as well as space) is amazing. It also saves time (and money) not having to buy a different product every time you run out. Try it and see for yourself. We love MPD which you can get on line from http://www.aloeverapassion.flp.com/. It cleans everything in your household and is free from harsh chemicals, it is cost and cleaning effective.
• Keep your toiletries in a waterproof container, IKEA have some great sizes. This means you can just lift up the container and wipe underneath rather than uplifting loads of bottles. It makes your bathroom look tidy too. I also use this system for my bedroom and the kitchen as well. • Tuck your bed linen sets inside a pillow case, it makes for easy storage and means you have a complete set ready to make up when you need it, this does save a massive amount of time especially if your house has different sized beds. Pop a lavender bag inside each pillow case to keep the linen smelling fresh.
• Make cleaning a family affair, every-one should pitch in. Although initially this can take a bit of coaxing after a few weeks it becomes routine. My favourite technique is to put on your families favourite song and challenge them to do as much as they can in that time. This works with kids really well and makes it a game rather than a chore. 3, 4 or 5 people tackling the cleaning tasks saves so much time. Up Town Funk is our current cleaning tune (the extended version so I get 5 minutes of help instead of 3!) • I am a big fan of flushable wipes, I get Morrisons own brand as they are cost effective. I keep them in the bathroom and it takes about 60 seconds daily to whizz round the sink and then the toilet, flush the cloth away after use. This keeps the dust from building up in your bathroom and a fresher smell making your bathroom a much more pleasant place to be. • Break down your cleaning tasks to short bursts of time. For example – do 15 minutes in the kitchen rather than 3 hours to clean the whole house. You will find you complete more in the short burst of time and feel more motivated having fully completed your task. Once that is done, do something rewarding and tackle another cleaning task for 15 mins at another time.

When friends fall out: how to help your child cope with playground arguments By Liat Hughes Joshi The dreaded playground squabble has struck, the tears are rolling and you’re unsure as to how to help... Relax: it’s normal Primary school children fall out (and in again) as quickly as a round of Hokey Cokey. Most squabbles are soon forgotten: kids rarely bear grudges the way grown-ups do. Unfortunately this knowledge won’t console your heartbroken child much, so… Reassure, hug and listen Even if it’ll probably blow over, your child could feel like their world is collapsing. Help them to help themselves Instead of providing solutions, encourage your child to think through what they could do to resolve this, but with your guidance.
Resist the temptation to wade in! Your parental instincts might urge you to tackle the other child concerned, or their parents, but hold back. Wait and see if everything settles by itself. Confronting the other child isn’t fair or appropriate. Plus your son or daughter might find it embarrassing if mum or dad piles in to sort their playground problems out. Proceed with caution with the other parents The children will probably make up before the week’s out, potentially leaving an awkward feud between the parents (who you’ll have to see at the school gates for the next however many years!).
When to see their teacher… If whatever happened involved physical violence, is persistent, and/ or your child starts not wanting to go to school, then do discuss it with their teacher. They can then keep a closer eye on the children. See this as a learning experience There might have been tears but chances are your child will have learnt more about relationships and friendships along the way.
Creating Confident children Confidence is just as important in life – if not more so - than that brace of A grades. It’s vital to emotional wellbeing and something most of us hope our kids will develop. But how can we instil this feeling, particularly if it doesn’t come naturally to them? Accept your child’s starting point Not all of us are confident by nature (life would be boring that way…) and whilst we can encourage selfbelief, transforming a shy child into the ‘life and soul of the party’, is rarely realistic. Accept your child’s personality and ‘starting point’; it might be different to yours, or others’, and that’s absolutely fine. Don’t force things Your child needs to trust you when taking on new experiences and forcing them into something they’re very uncomfortable with damages that trust. Instead, take small steps to encourage confidence Find opportunities to stretch just a bit beyond what your son or daughter is happy doing at any one time.
Work out what their fear is Pin down their concerns – perhaps it’s that they’ll make a fool of themselves, won’t be able to find you at the end of the party, won’t be understood. Address their concern and provide reassurance that they will be okay, that what others think doesn’t really matter and that you’re there for them. Keep praise special Keep praise for when it’s truly warranted and focus on effort rather than just results. This way, when they do achieve something amazing, your comments will have more impact.
Find their forte If your child doesn’t do so well at school, this can erode their self-esteem. Seek opportunities for them to try activities out of school and highlight positive personality traits, such as being especially kind or a good organiser. Step back sometimes and let them ‘have a go’ Children benefit from finding their own solutions, doing things their way sometimes and taking sensible risks. Guide and advise but try not to jump in and take over too quickly.

One year I got my knickers in a complete twist about what to do for one of my daughter’s birthday parties. After much thought and many conversations, I decided that I would throw the party myself. A 5 year olds birthday party? How hard could it be?! As it turns out - quite, bordering on very. For reasons long forgotten, on the big day I felt my creativity knew no bounds. Firstly I completely emptied her bedroom (moving toys, shelves, bed and her sisters cot) - a monumental task on it’s own. Then I begged, borrowed and lugged 6 tables and plenty of chairs from the nursery up the road. Once in place I set them all up with shiny tiaras, glue, sequins, feathers and glitter so they could make their own fairy princess tiaras. I pinned netting up on the ceiling and filled it with fairy lights. The room looked amazing (if I do say so myself) and if I was setting myself up in a fairy party business and could have left it all there then it would have been great – unfortunately that clearly wasn’t the case and the girls needed their bedroom back! Games were organised, parcels were wrapped to be passed, food was made, cakes were baked and balloons were blown up. I was a birthday party creating whizz. Then the guests arrived.
And in no time at all sequins and feathers decorated the floor, entire tubes of glitter were upturned and bits of squished cake and crushed wotsits filled the gaps in the floorboards. Someone cried (me?), an argument broke out over who had the parcel when the music stopped, another child announced they were allergic to everything and the final straw was when one of the party princesses prodded me in leg to announce loudly that she was bored. I’m sure it was all a huge success (and that my husband was present somewhere in the blur) but I basically single handedly provided the services of party entertainer, caterer, house clearance and removals… not to mention the tidying up. The following year definitely did not take place in our home, there were professionals involved and thanks to that my knickers remained untwisted.

On Wednesday and Fridays in February and March, visitors will have the chance to watch a large scale model of the National Museum of Scotland being built in the Grand Gallery, designed by the renowned ‘artist in LEGOⓇ bricks’, Warren Elsmore. During February half-term, families can help with an ambitious project to build one of the museum’s most iconic objects on a giant scale. The programme of events will be supported by a small display of Warren’s creations; model buildings, vehicles and other objects made with LEGOⓇ bricks. Build It! His journey leads him to the forgetful yet optimistic Dory and a host of other aquatic creatures.Filmhouse offers families and young people the best year-round selection of films from around the world, as well as filmmaking workshops during the school holidays. Every Sunday at 11am, Filmhouse screens great family films rated U or PG as part of Filmhouse Junior, with tickets only £4 (£5 for 3D).
