Edinburgh’s Christmas Edinburgh’s Christmas is back from 20 November 2015 – 4 January 2016! Brand new for 2015 is the free event Virgin Money Street of Light, which will see the Royal Mile lit up by over 60,000 lights. Headline shows include circus sensation Circa: Beyond and family favourite Julia Donaldson’s Stick Man, while rides and attractions include the 60m Star Flyer, along with the Big Wheel and two spectacular ice rinks. For the kids, Santa Land includes the Santa Train, a Christmas Tree Maze, rides for the wee ones and the chance to meet the man himself! Teeny Tiny Toddler Fest ’16 It’s on again! After the Christmas break, while older children return to school, Camera Obscura and World of Illusions will once again transform into the place to be for toddlers (and their grown-ups). Our Teeny Tiny Toddler Fest was so popular in January 2015 that we are extending the opening hours, Camera Obscura and World of Illusions will open at 9.30 every morning of Teeny Tiny Toddler Fest ’16, because we know that toddlers aren’t big on sleeping in. Come and enjoy the six floors of interactive exhibits, research workshops developed by the University of Edinburgh, play-stations with hands-on fun from Camera Obscura and all the usual favourites. Make coloured shadows, swim without getting wet, take interesting family photos, and watch your toddler delight in their mixed up reflections. “I can’t recommend it highly enough, will return for sure. Edinburgh Christmas Charity Festival –Inverleith Park
Saturday 5 & Sunday 6 December This annual event is now in its fifth year and goes from strength to strength. This year it will begin with The Edinburgh Christmas Santa Parade through Stockbridge starting at 9.30 on Saturday 5th December. Balgreen Playgroup Balgreen Playgroup runs Monday – Thursday from 0900 – 1130am and welcome children aged 2 – 5 years. The Take it Right Outside campaign aims to raise awareness of the harmful effects of second-hand smoke and gives parents the facts to help them make their homes and cars smoke-free. Eighty five per cent of second-hand smoke is invisible and odourless, so it creates a hidden danger that most people don’t even consider. Every time you smoke, you breathe out second-hand smoke which contains more than 4,000 toxic chemicals like lead, cyanide and arsenic. After just one cigarette, the harmful chemicals from second-hand smoke linger long after the smoke has disappeared. Smoking out an open window or at the back door isn’t enough to protect children as the harmful chemicals can creep from room to room for up to five hours, waiting for your child to breathe them in. And because your child breathes faster than you, they’ll breathe more of those harmful chemicals. People who smoke are not always aware of the steps they should take to protect those around them when they light up. Everyone’s situation is different, but there are many changes that you can make, including: • Asking a friend or neighbour to look after your children while you pop out • Going outside to smoke when your kids are at school or nursery. • Trying nicotine patches, gum or spray just to get you through times you want to smoke at home Make the right choice for your kids and never smoke in your home or car. monkEy drama Monkey Drama have been having a great time, continuing to work with children across Edinburgh, Glasgow and in everywhere in between. We had two great sessions at the Storytelling Centre in October and we have also been working on fantastic projects with children in schools and charity organisations. Edinburgh dancE acadEmy After ten years of dancing, acting and teaching overseas, RAD Examiner Julie Mitchell created Edinburgh Dance Academy. Mhairi Hogg School of Dancing, established in 1991, is a thriving and successful Dance School offering quality education and specialist training in Tap, Modern and Highland Dancing. Classes are held in Oxgangs and Colinton. In our Nursery/P1 Tap class at 9.30am on Saturdays in Oxgangs Neighbourhood Centre, 71 Firrhill Drive, EH13, we provide a structured, fun-packed learning environment. Children's attention and imagination is captured through expressive movement. Our little tap dancers have a sense of achievement as they master basic tap steps, hopping, skipping, jumping, gallops and so much more. Social skills are developed through dancing with a partner and making new friends. Balance, strength, flexibility, co-ordination and rhythm improve as the children learn new steps and movements. Creativity and musicality are developed as the children sing "action" songs and nursery rhymes. We stage an annual Dance Show, in which all pupils perform and, in July, we passed an audition to perform at Disneyland Paris as part of their Performing Arts programme. How to Read With Your Child – And Really Enjoy It By Justine Crow Recently, when sorting junk in the garage I came across A Squash and a Squeeze by Julia Donaldson and I realised that I could still recite every line, years after I had read it with my child.

How can we ensure we are fresh and eager each time our loved one wants to share their reading? And given that we know that it is not only vital for children’s intellectual development to read together but that it also benefits our own inner lives, what should we do to get better at it? Here are ten ways to truly enjoy reading with your little one.

Accept and celebrate the knowledge that reading with your child is part of your job description as a parent. It is there alongside cuddler, sleep-trainer and bottom wiper. The more you do it, the easier it becomes. Soon, you will be a natural performer. When they are babies, choose books YOU like to read to them. They are too small to understand much but the cadence of your voice gives them comfort. You could read a cookbook aloud and they’ll be content. When they are toddlers, reading together enables bonding but it also can act as an incentive: if you stay in your bed ALL night, you can get into my bed in the morning for a story, how’s that? The concept of ‘making time’ is an impossible ideal. We can’t magic up extra minutes to read but we can use the moments we already have. Lots of pictures are the best way to keep a little one on the potty; submergible bath books enable hair-washing and nit-checking too. What a bonus! Keep books for daytime reading on the lowest shelf and allow them to select the book they want, no matter how many times it has been shared. If you really can’t stand it another time, have a bit of fun; read it backwards, or upside down, or in gobbledygook. Your child will soon insist it is done the right way up and before you know it, they will be reading it to you!

Books without text such as Clown by Quentin Blake are brilliant for sharing – encourage your toddler to tell you what is happening. Talk about what you both see. 7. At the library, put your phone away and suggest that each of you dig out a title. Your youngster will often pick one they already have at home - but it doesn’t matter, because your special task is to discover one they’ve never seen before. Just think how much more enthusiastic you will be to open it up. 8. When shopping together, don’t expect a young child to choose the ‘right’ book. You decide what to buy while your child rummages through the books on the play-table. Then read one together before you leave. Once they can actually read, allow them to choose their own books. 9. Books for bedtime should be chosen by you and kept higher up on the shelves. Make this a time for your child to listen and be calm and contented - though questions should be answered. Then, it’s lights out! 10. As they grow older, you can be more adventurous and find longer stories, like fairy tales. Soon, you can introduce to them the novels you loved as a child. Perhaps they will want to continue reading a particular chapter book alone but they will always remember the sense of an experienced shared.

The Specialby Christmas Cake Ellie was visiting her granny while her mum and dad were out getting some presents. “Are you looking forward to Christmas then Ellie?” asked Granny “Of course” said Ellie “Except…- Granny, can I tell you something? There’s lots of food we have at Christmas that I don’t really like.” “Oh do you mean brussel sprouts?” said Granny smiling. “No actually I really like brussel sprouts. It’s the other things. I don’t really like mince pies or Christmas pudding or Christmas cake or Black Bun. I think it’s because I don’t like raisins and marzipan and I definitely don’t like hard icing.” “Ah” said Granny, I can see why that might be a problem.” Then she went quiet for a minute, Granny was having an idea…. “I know, why don’t we make our very own Christmas cake with things that you do like? Mmmh… Let’s think – Ellie when you think about Christmas, what comes in to your mind?” This time it was Ellie’s turn to go quiet: “Well I really like opening presents, I even like wrapping them up. I like getting a wee orange in my stocking on Christmas morning. Oh, and sparkly pavements when you go out at night time” “You mean like frost or snow?”

“Yes! Oh and selection boxes with chocolate” “Anything else?” “The Nativity play with the baby Jesus and the star” “Ok” said granny “What if we start off like we were making a normal sponge cake and then add some extra flavours like orange and chocolate…” “Ooh like a chocolate orange cake!” “Yes exactly” said Granny “Then we could decorate it with a star and sprinkle it with icing sugar just like snow.” “We could have it on the table for pudding on Christmas day!” Squealed Ellie in excitement. “But Granny, I think there’s something else we need to do to if it’s going to be really Christmassy.” “What’s that Ellie?” “Granny- can we make two and have one for our family and one for a present for someone else?” “Ellie, that’s a lovely idea.” So that’s what they did. They made 2 special Christmas cakes: one for Ellie and her family and one for the new family with the baby who had just moved in next door to Granny. Everyone who tasted it agreed, it was a very special Christmas cake indeed.

Festive Chocolate Orange Cake Makes 2 • • • • •
225g soft brown sugar 3 eggs, whisked 160ml milk 160ml oil or 200g butter Juice and finely grated zest of two oranges or 110ml orange juice • 60g cocoa powder • 320g self-raising flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder Preheat the oven to gas mark 4/180 C. Grease 2 cake tins with butter or oil. Cream together sugar and butter and mix in other ingredients or add sugar, oil, eggs, milk, oil, orange juice and zest in a bowl and mix until very well combined. Sieve together the cocoa powder, flour and baking powder and fold into the wet mixture until fairly smooth. Pour the mixture into the cake tins and bake for around 30-40 minutes until a knife just comes out clean. Leave to cool before sprinkling with icing sugar or mix double cream and melted chocolate with some orange zest for a festive icing! With warm wishes for a lovely Christmas. Love Mrs Mash x

Parent Parent Zoë Young runs a Boogie Beat music & movement classes in Edinburgh and Stirling. She lives in Barnton with her 2 year old son Angus and husband Colin.
Favourite day out: We are members of Edinburgh Zoo and love going there as a family. It makes for a great day out, even though it is on a big hill (I recommend getting the bus to the top!)… The parks at the Zoo are really good too. Also, soft play at Scrambles, Ratho EICA is a great venue for when the weather isn’t so good. Favourite child friendly restaurant: My all time favorite restaurant is La Favorita in Leith. The pizzas are amazing and it has a lovely family feel to it too. The staff are so welcoming and nothing is ever a problem even during a busy service. Favorite shop: There are so many lovely little shops in Edinburgh to choose from. A personal favourite for me is Cloudberry in Barnton and also their new shop in Blackhall. It has the most beautiful cards and unique gifts. I love taking time to browse over all their lovely little things. The coffee is great and the cakes are delicious too. Definitely a 10/10! Favourite park: My little boy and I love the pony park in Cramond. It is absolutely gorgeous with the little Shetland ponies in their field overlooking the park – and Angus loves pointing them out as he runs round or plays on the swings! Favourite children’s club/class: Well, it has to be Boogie Beat music & movement! The themes are wonderfully classical and traditional and the children just love them. My little boy has been coming to Boogie Beat since he was 18months old and has loved it from the very beginning. Also, we used to go to Baby Sensory in Cramond, and we both really enjoyed the classes. It is a lovely first class to go to with a new baby, I definitely recommend it.
Proudest eco-friendly moment: Moving from our flat to a house and being able to recycle everything easily in the many different boxes and bins provided. It’s hard to fit all of your rubbish into one wheelie bin and it makes sense to split things into the correct boxes and bins. No parent should be without: A sleepyhead for a new born baby – it’s fab! The sleepyhead is a multifunctional, portable baby bed you can take anywhere. Softer than a blanket or Moses basket, you can use it awake or sleeping, as a play pod, for tummy time or as a bed. My little boy always slept well in his sleepyhead at night time, it was a shame when he got too big for it. Parenting pet hates: People being too outwardly judgmental over parenting styles. Everyone is different and has different ways of bringing up their own children – and it can be easy to always think that one way is best. I think people normally find the route to get the balance right themselves, and it can be hard when people question you. Parenting high points (what makes it all worthwhile): A cheeky smile always does it for me or a simple night night Mummy, love you! My heart melts.
Funniest moment (with child): When Angus decided to dance at the kids disco at Center Parcs. He had only really just learned to walk and we had never seen it before, and he just had a boogie with all the bigger kids – loved it! Favourite family holiday spot: We love Center Parcs in Penrith. It makes for a fantastic easy holiday with loads to do and it’s not too far to drive either. I would also recommend Kenmore as an ideal holiday spot for families. We stayed in a gorgeous loch side apartment and Angus enjoyed counting the ducks and the boats every morning! Best children’s book: Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book by Julia Donaldson or the Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen are favorites in our house. Best DVD: Toy Story! I loved it when I was younger and Angus also really enjoys it. It’s a good film to watch as a family and as there is plenty of adult humor in the movie too. Most played with toys: Angus got a keyboard as a Christmas present from his Granny and he has played with it every day since. There is a microphone attached to it and he sings the Boogie Beat songs into it which is very cute! Biggest waste of money: You always buy far too much when you are expecting your first baby as you have no idea what to expect or what you really need. I would recommend using the John Lewis nursery advice service. They were brilliant in giving a considered view of things to buy. As a first time mum, I found this so helpful. Why you like living where you do: I love Edinburgh because it is a really pretty city with lots of things to see and do, whether this is as a family or with friends or with your partner. It’s a fantastic city and Angus is very lucky to be growing up here.

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year. This year it takes place on Saturday, December 5th. But remember a small business isn’t just for Christmas!

As well as seeing St Nicholas, youngsters will be able to enjoy a range of festive treats that include meeting some of their favourite TV and film characters on November 28th and 29th and December 12th and 13th. They’ll also be able to take home a balloon model of their choice on December 5th and have their face painted on December 6th – all for free. And this year Waterstones will be hosting three Christmas themed story telling events in store to add some extra sparkle on December 5th, 12th and 19th. For those looking to spread some goodwill, a number of local charities will be in the centre offering a helping hand throughout December. Alzheimer Scotland will be gift wrapping presents to help raise funds on December 11th, while Bethany Christian Trust will once again use the centre as a collection point for its Caring Christmas Trees. Edinburgh Christmas Charity Festival The 2015 Edinburgh Christmas Charity Festival will open with first ever Santa Parade through the heart of Stockbridge, Pipe Bands, Santa, Reindeer and an escort of Elves.
