Protect your child against flu
This year, every child in Scotland aged between 2 and 11 will be offered the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine offers children the best defence against flu and helps ensure children are protected, and the risk of the virus being spread to others is reduced. Children aged between 2 and 5 not yet in school will be offered the vaccine at their GP practice from October, and those aged between 5 and 11 will be offered it at school when they return at the start of the autumn term. Join in the fun as World’s top gymnasts come to Glasgow Gymnastics is one of the most popular sports in the UK for school aged children, with thousands participating in schools and local clubs every week in Scotland. And there has never been a better opportunity for gymnastics fans across the country to see the world’s best gymnasts in action, when the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships come to the SSE Hydro, Glasgow 23 October - 1 November. As part of the city’s commitment to developing a legacy from hosting the event and encouraging more young people to take up the sport of gymnastics as part of an active, healthy lifestyle, Glasgow Life has produced an innovative schools pack. St Columba's Hospice, Edinburgh is hosting a fun family 5 mile challenge in the Pentland Hills on Saturday 19th September. There will be lots of fun activities on the day including a bouncy castle, slide, gladiator duel and refreshments. The registration fee is £25 and registration opens at 12pm with the walk commencing at 1pm. This event is to raise vital funds for St Columba's which is Edinburgh's hospice providing specialist palliative care for patients with life limiting diseases and care and support for their families and loved ones. Nile Grove Playgroup is looking for an enthusiastic Manager for a 6-12 month period for the academic year 2015-2016. We are a community playgroup run buy a Manager, two play leaders and a parent committee. We are a registered charity and we provide a fun, safe and caring environment for children between the ages of 2 1⁄4 and 5, five mornings a week during term time. The Playgroup Manager is key to the success of the playgroup, and is responsible for the day to day operation. The Manager is also the key point of contact for the parents, staff, children and the public. Scottish Seabird Centre calls for under 16s to enter photography competition

The Scottish Seabird Centre, North Berwick, has just launched its tenth annual photography competition and is calling on under 16s to enter! There are a whole host of categories to choose from including; Scottish Wildlife, Worldwide Wildlife, Creative Visions of Nature, Landscape, Environmental Impact and World Flora. Plus to celebrate their tenth year they are including two brand new categories. To celebrate the Year of Food & Drink, youngsters can enter Nature’s Foragers where entrants are invited to consider our natural larder and the canny way some creatures find their lunch. In addition, budding film makers also have the opportunity to enter for the first time in the Nature Condensed category. Entrants in this category should supply a maximum of one minute’s footage, focusing on any of themes outlined in the photographic categories. The deadline for entries is Sunday 18 October: following this, the judges will meet to decide on a shortlist in each category. The shortlist will then be on display from 20 November in the Seabird Centre and online for the public to cast their vote until Sunday 21 February 2016. Kidsnlpscotland Kidsnlpscotland works to support families in a variety of ways. Recently there has been an increase in parents seeking support to resolve sleep issues with their children. The increase in screen time can be a contributory factor to this in many households. The backlight on I-pads and other such devices mimics daylight. This tricks the brain and as a result the production of melatonin is stopped as it believes it is still day-time. This is needed to help regulate the body clock. During the hours before you want to sleep, try to create a routine. Ensure all electronic gadgets are switched off: keep phones out of the bedroom! (You’re own as well as your children’s). Recent research shows that subconsciously when phones are in the room they distract our thoughts as well as emit waves that interfere with sleep. Introduce limit times on computer games. Perhaps your child can earn minutes after homework is done each night. Be firm, fair and consistent. When a child is on a computer game it increases the brain wave rate. If they are on it too long then the brain wave rate is equivalent to beta. Beta brain waves are associated with normal waking consciousness and a heightened state of alertness, logic and critical reasoning. While Beta brains are important for effective functioning throughout the day, they can translate into stress, anxiety and restlessness, not a good state before bedtime and the enemy of sleep. As a performing arts school, teachers at Stagecoach Edinburgh spend a lot of time wrangling with these words – finding new ways to engage children and encourage them to be confident in themselves and their ideas. Children may come to us to be better performers, to increase their confidence or to work alongside like minded peers doing something that they love. So encouraging confidence in a child can start anywhere! But our first step is always to explore creative risk taking – helping children to be brave with their actions and voices. This can be a simple thing like joining in a game, answering Yes at registration, developing a new dance move, to standing up on stage in front of an audience. But always, we are ready to celebrate the small milestones as well as the big ones! Confidence comes in all shapes and sizes – but through the performing arts we hope to help children to feel confident in adapting to new environments and feel at ease being spontaneous in different situations.
Life is often filled with commitments – work commitment, family commitment, clubs and classes, trying to stay healthy....and so the list continues. The performing arts doesn't just teach children to be good singers, or know how to differentiate a split leap from a box step. It highlights the value of team work, of being part of a group and all working towards a shared goal. Commitment means effort and time. But it also engenders a sense of belonging. A group of people who come together to support each other, spark off each other and work together to create something special. But commitment is important. At Stagecoach we celebrate commitment and give out awards to our students. This term we gave a 12 year award to a student who had been coming along since they were four. That's a huge amount of commitment right there. And we are lucky to have such a brilliant role model and a valued member of the team at Stagecoach.
Stagecoach Edinburgh uses voice training in drama and singing to help encourage our students to be audible and articulate (and of course confident!) when they are speaking. Through understanding of how their voice works the students begin to use their voice with more efficiency. We also offer 1:1 LAMDA tuition sessions for students wishing to gain additional qualifications and UCAS points. At Stagecoach we teach voice training through a mixture of games and exercises to encourage vocal dexterity and range. But that's not all communication is about using nuance in the voice, expression in the face and understanding how body language can be used to convey meaning. And from our youngest students (aged 4) to our oldest (age 18) this is a skill that is not just used in performing arts but is also useful in school and far beyond.

Dealing with your child’s fears Fear is common in early childhood particularly between the ages of two and six. Triggers of fear change with the child’s age and there is a typical pattern of fears as a child develops. However because all children are different, fears may not follow the same pattern. A typical pattern of fear might be:
The following tips may help in dealing with toddlers’ fears:
• For infants and young toddlers the predominant fear is that of strangers. • At about 18 months, fear of animals, sudden noises, doctors and nurses come into prominence. • At about the age of two, the fears include the toilet, the dark, people dressed up eg clowns and even Santa Claus. • At about two and half, when the imagination is developing, toddlers begin to worry about imaginary creatures.
• Acknowledge the fear as real and try to find the source (scary books, scary cartoons). • When talking about fears with your child use stories to discuss the fear. For example, if your child has a fear of the toilet, a story book about a child who uses the toilet without any mishap will help. Simple books that explain the fears are usually helpful. • Share the scary experience with your child. Standing close to him/her and watching the water flush down the toilet may help them to face the fear. But you may have to do this several times before they are happy. • Using a gradual approach to overcoming fears often works. For example, holding your child at a safe distance and watching, then moving closer and then allowing him/her to flush the toilet often works. • Never make fun of your child’s fears. • Helping a child to relax by teaching them how to can reduce fears and anxiety. Even small children can learn this breathing technique – breathing in through the nose to the count of 3, for example, breath 1 2 3 in through your nose – hold – blow out slowly through the mouth. Remember that these fears are normal and part of a child’s natural development. However, understanding childhood fears and how to handle them is important for parents. The reason for fears is because as children mature they become able to grasp the concept of cause and effect, but, with their limited experience, toddlers are unable to sort out all the possibilities for each situation. For example: if the water flushes down the toilet isn’t it possible that I could be flushed away too? If the neighbour’s dog suddenly jumps up on Daddy, won’t all dogs jump up on people including me? Toddlers are aware that they are small compared to those around them and this sense of size difference can be a cause of fear. Their growing imagination helps children develop their social skills through play, enjoyment and fun, but it can also be the source of fear. Babies usually forget frightening incidents eg injections, but toddlers can retain that memory for a long time and many traditional stories like Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Bears can trigger fears. Toddlers are also self-centred and all toys belong to them, all attention focuses on them and all experiences happen to them, so if anything scary happens to anyone in a book or on TV it can happen to them. They also can become afraid of the things other toddlers display fear of.

• Beware of overemphasising the fear, because that could lead to the discovery that expressing fear is a reliable route to parental attention. • Make sure you are not responsible for the fear, because sometimes fear in children is triggered by repeated parental warning and because of this it is important to be aware of your own fears and find ways of dealing with them.

For many years (more than I care to mention!) I have been assessing both children and adults for Meares – Irlen Syndrome. Meares Irlen syndrome is the name given to people whose condition is helped by the use of coloured overlays. Recent reports have claimed that coloured overlays do not in fact improve vision, I agree, the coloured filters do not allow a person to achieve better vision, but for certain individuals it increases reading speeds by up to 25%. This is achieved by stopping the print from doubling or moving, removes distracting patterns and colours within the text and helps with tracing of text.. This increases fluidity of reading and overall makes reading a much more comfortable and enjoyable experience. The science of why coloured overlays work has not yet been conclusive, which does not sit well with a science geek like me. However in coherence with other aspects of dyslexia and other learning difficulties it appears to be related to how the brain processes the information. My research during my honours degree pointed towards a reduction in function of the Magnocellular pathway within the brain which processes basic visual information. Subsequent research also points in this direction. So what happens in a Visual Stress Consultation? Firstly an eye examination is undertaken (if required) to see if spectacles are required and to eliminate any health concerns. Next the binocular visual system (i.e. how the two eyes work together) is thoroughly examined to identify any visual factors that may contribute to visual stress and exercises may be given to strengthen any weaknesses. Finally, a specific reading test determines the best coloured overlay required. The selected overlay is then issued on a trial basis for up to one school term to see if it reduces the symptoms. If these prove to be successful, then progressing to tinted prescribed spectacles is the next step. Further testing for this is required as the colour may differ from the overlay to the spectacles.
A detailed report accompanies this consultation. I recommended that all children, suspected by parents or teachers of having learning issues who report suffering from any visual stress symptoms ie headaches, movement of text, lethargy with reading, tracking issues, should be examined by an experienced Optometrist. Adults also benefit from this service. The consultation is just £45 and is suitable for all age ranges with a reading disability. Lunch box pitfalls – how to pack for healthier teeth and gums Summer holidays can feel like a distant memory as we get back into the routine of early morning starts, uniform battles (Get your shoes on, GET YOUR SHOES ON, GET. YOUR. SHOES. ON!!!) and the joys of packed lunches. It is estimated that more than half of children are taking a packed lunch to school. Thinking up inspiring ideas is hard and it is so easy to fall into the trap of buying pre packed, readymade options. These options tend to be high in fat, salt and sugar. Lunch time is an important part of the whole school day, without lunch, your child may struggle to concentrate during the afternoon.
Tips to make packed lunches easier: • Involve your child, he/she might be more likely to try new foods that they have selected and helped you to make. • Let your child choose from a small selection of food, too much choice can be confusing. Tooth friendly lunch and snack ideas: • Make fruit fun! Make a fruit slaw, chopped apple, peaches, plums, you can also add grapes and blueberries. • Hummus with breadsticks, cucumber and/or carrot sticks, this can be a change from sandwiches. • Make boiled eggs fun, draw a smiley face on the shell. • Cheese and crackers • Rice cakes • popcorn (unsweetened) Around a quarter of added sugar in children’s diets comes from sugary drinks. It is surprising how much sugar is in some of the named brands - one has the equivalent of 4 and a half sugar cubes in one pouch! Tooth friendly drinks: • Milk • Water Not only are healthy lunches important, keeping your teeth healthy is too!
How you can keep your children’s teeth healthy 1. Start regular dental examinations, even before teeth have appeared. Not only is your dentist interested in teeth, he or she will make sure that your child’s jaws, mouth and gums are developing normally and give advice. Your child also becomes used to the surroundings of a dental surgery; this can be paramount for future understanding and reduce any fears. Eating sensibly to maintain a healthy mouth means avoiding sugar. We recommend that sugary foods should 2. only be given as a treat rather than a staple part of your child’s diet. We know it can be difficult and as your child grows, they then become exposed to sugary foods that are available. 3. Regular tooth brushing is recommended, brush morning and night to prevent gum disease and dental decay by removing the germs that harm our mouth. Your dentist or hygienist will assist you in tooth brushing for your children and give advice when you meet resistance. Your child’s toothbrush should have soft/medium bristles and be small enough the fit inside their mouth and move around easily. It is advised to start at the back of the teeth on the side next to the lips/ cheek and work methodically around the teeth then doing the same on the inner surfaces, incorporating the biting surface of the teeth, and then the same method for upper teeth and this should be carried out twice a day. We understand it’s easy to tell you how to toothbrush but the actual doing can be difficult, persevere, children usually get used to this as it becomes part of their routine, we suggest you supervise tooth brushing till the age of 8. 4. Use fluoride toothpaste. (There is no fluoride added to Lothian water supplies). We recommend that a pea size amount of toothpaste is used and children should be encouraged to spit don’t rinse to keep the fluoride in place longer. 5. Last but not least, visit your dentist regularly. We are here to assist you keep your child’s mouth healthy. Children’s healthcare, when and where you need it If your child gets unwell, at nursery, school or home, it can often be difficult to know where to turn for advice or support. Although some workplaces allow time off work to deal with an emergency, it can be difficult arranging time off work for GP appointments. Help is at hand, thanks to Edinburgh private health practice, YourGP, based in The Dean Village, West End of Edinburgh. With a range of highly experienced GPs and Paramedic YourGP is fully competent to deal with the anxieties associated with your unwell youngster and the need for help when you need it. As part of the Sameday Doctor network, YourGP offers short-notice appointments within 24 hours, as well as longer opening hours, seven days a week – meaning you have the flexibility of appointments.
What Children’s services do YourGP offer? YourGP offers a complete range of paediatric services, development assessment, many country specific vaccine schedules, including UAE and Australia in addition to the UK, non-schedule vaccines such as Hepatitis B, Chicken Pox and BCG with Gardasil for boys and girls from 9 years old. Unlike many other GPs in Edinburgh and across Scotland, one of the services YourGP offers in-clinic is children’s blood tests, which can be done at the weekend, including Sundays. Specific Blood Tests for children with autism For parents and carers with autistic children, getting blood taken can be particularly challenging for all involved. Most individuals with autism have trouble understanding things that are new to them, including people, places and events (such as getting blood drawn). Often when they’re scared, anxious or find themselves in a situation they can’t understand, their response can be unpredictable, extreme and even volatile. Working with Dr Lorene Amet, YourGP have enhanced their knowledge of this illness and used this to improve their approach.

Parent Parent Judith McLean lives in Colinton with Isla 4 and John 20 months, along with her husband Mark.
Favorite shop: Lakeland – I am addicted to buying cooking gadgets and am running out of space in my kitchen cupboards. My latest investment is my “NutriBullet” and I also recently bought an amazing rice cooker from 'Pampered Chef' - you just put 1 cup of rice and 2 cups of water in it, tighten the lid and put in the microwave for 15 minutes and you get perfect, fluffy rice! Favourite park: – Spylaw Park in Colinton is a great place to go with the children and our dog, Sophie. It has the Water of Leith running through it - perfect for a little paddle! It also has a good swing park. Once a year there is an 'Art in the Park' festival with stalls, music, a dog show and great kids activities. Favourite children’s club/class: Isla attends Angela Watson Ballet Classes and it has been wonderful to see how much it has improved her posture, coordination and sense of rhythm. Both Isla and John love 'Messy Munchkins' - all the fun of messy play without any of the clearing up! We also go to 'Monkey Music' classes which are so much fun - since starting them John sways and tries to dance whenever he hears music! Favourite day out: On a rainy day we love to go to Toots Play Cafe which has a great selection of suitable toys for all ages up to 5 including a huge dolls house and fancy dress costumes. Amanda, the owner did a wonderful birthday party for Isla last year. The kids can play while I relax with a coffee and cheese toastie. In good weather we enjoy going to the Zoo, Gorgie farm and Craigie farm as they are fascinated by all animals. Favourite child friendly restaurant: – Elginhaugh farm is newly opened and is fast becoming one of our favourites too - they have a super play area for the kids while you are waiting for your food to be served and an unusual display of cuckoo clocks (have you ever heard a clock go Moo?) Favourite eco-friendly moment: – Attending Canny Families Cooking Course where we learned great recipes using up left overs and reducing food waste. It has really helped me learn easy recipes that my fussy kids will eat - pitta bread pizzas with sweet potato wedges are a big hit. No parent should be without: – Baby wipes! More Baby wipes and maybe a few extra just in case! Parenting pet hates: – parents of children letting them drop litter. This really bothers me - if they are allowed to do this as children they will grow up to think that it's ok Parenting high points (what makes it all worthwhile): – At night when I put Isla to bed, she throws her arms around me and says “I love you mum, you’re so much fun” I feel so blessed that I get to spend every day in my children’s company. When John snuggles into me and pats me on the back copying how I pat his back. I love to watch them play together and it's so funny to see John when he's laughing so much he falls over! Funniest comment (from child): – Isla wondered if there were dogs in heaven! Also Isla telling me that Daddy was 'in charge' of our family!! I don't think so!! Favourite family holiday spot: – Centre Parks is great and not too far to drive. We’ve been several times and always have a good time. Peebles Hydro also have great children’s facilities, we have been every year for my dads birthday weekend for over 20 years and even though he sadly died last year we still continued the tradition. Best children’s book: – All the “That’s not my ....... “ range are fantastic for toddlers as they are touchy feely and easy to read. Best DVD: – Has to be Frozen! Lost track of the times we've watched it. Most played with toys: – Isla loves playing with her dolls, feeding them, changing them and pushing them around in their buggy. John’s favourite thing is a toilet brush and any chance he gets he sneaks into the toilet to play with it! Yuck! Why you like living where you do: – I’ve lived in Edinburgh for over 30 years and feel so lucky. It has everything I could possibly want. We are so close to the countryside, the city and the beach. Edinburgh Steiner School Steiner Schools differ from other independent schools in both curriculum and approach. St George’s School for Girls A Flying Start for Girls at St George’s School, Murrayfield Open Mornings Saturday 3 October and Wednesday 7 October, from 10 am
St George’s School is unique: it is the only all-through, all-girls school in Edinburgh. Here we promote educational excellence both inside and outside the classroom. But with so much on offer, and not necessarily the time or money to do them all, how do you pick? I’m not saying this is for everyone but over the years I have found that letting my kids choose their own extra activities is the way to go. As much as I wanted one of them to have music lessons because I was (and am) convinced she’s a natural musical genius we found that the miserable cajoling journey across town each week coupled with lack of practice wasn’t working out for anyone. She chose “Princess Fiona Fighting Classes” after watching Shrek one time too many and has been happily doing kick boxing for years now. ST MARy’S MUSIC SCHOOL St Mary’s Music School is Scotland’s full-time independent specialist music school for talented young musicians aged 9 – 19. STRIngBABIES The idea of Stringbabies was created by Kay Tucker as a means of teaching stringed instruments to young children. Stringbabies starts with toys, one for each string, before introducing shapes which means children as young as three can make very simple pieces which they then play back. This very simple notation develops over time to a point where children can start learning to read standard notation. Making pieces enables children to develop composition skills and playing the pieces back afterwards gives them practise at sightreading, a very important skill for a musician. Stringbabies lessons also involve singing songs which the children will learn to play later on, and games which are fun for the children but help them develop good technique. EDInBURgH DAnCE ACADEMy After ten years of dancing, acting and teaching overseas, RAD Examiner Julie Mitchell created Edinburgh Dance Academy. Crafty Cooks offer cookery classes for children aged from 2.5 and up to Primary 6. We do a variety of different dishes, sweet and savoury. We also do food themed activities and tastings while the dishes are cooking. Classes cost £7.50 per week for a 8 -10 week term but your first weeks trial class is half price. JUPITER ARTLAnD Jupiter Artland is a sculpture garden just outside Edinburgh, offering hands on workshops inspired by a magical outdoor environment.
