Candy Floss teaches the road safety As a part of a health and safety initiative at Bright Horizon’s nurseries, a toy zebra called Candy Floss is used as an aid to teach children about the importance of looking after themselves. The children at Bright Horizons Morton Mains took Candy Floss on a trip to the garden centre. On the way there, they talked about road safety and how they have to look both ways when crossing the road with no zebra crossing. Candy floss helped the children to press the traffic lights and they all waited for the green man to show up, so the road could be safely crossed. They also noticed some hazards along the way like moving traffic and parked cars.

Rugbytigers, creative rugby coaching sessions for pre-school and P1 girls and boys is the brainchild of UKCC Level 2 rugby coach Robert Shepherd. He explains his thinking behind it. ‘Having coached players for over 12 years I’ve found that the greatest development comes when children have fun. Queuing up to take part in endless drills is a sure fire way to eventually turn players away. At Rugbytigers we play games which are story-based and involve all of the children, all of the time.’ He continues, ‘Our emphasis is on building confidence, evasive running, basic ball skills, balance and teamwork underpinned by communication and creativity. We encourage the children to think about different ways to solve challenges by working as a team. Free Creative Writing Workshops for Kids Explore Learning in Edinburgh will be running free Creative Writing workshops at Libraries across the region on Tuesday 22nd July. The workshops are aimed at children aged seven to 11 and will take place throughout the day at Morningside Library, Oxgangs Library, Corstorphine Library, Drumbrae Library, and Colinton and Currie library. Schools out for
summer!
So, that’s it for the next 6 or so weeks - no school. In the rosy romantic recesses of my memory the summer holidays were endless days of sunshine, with no shortage of playmates or places to explore. Occasionally I would return home, utter no words other than “I’m hungry”, and then be back out until either it was too dark to play or my tummy was rumbling again. Either nostalgia is playing tricks on me or my, how things have changed. As a mum now I can’t imagine my kids leaving our home in the morning and not know exactly where they were going - and for how long. I don’t think my mum had a clue where I was. But then again, no one offered young me the chance to learn how to breakdance or do magic. My summers gave me the chance to perfect clambering over and under things as well as the essential lifeskill of being able to pee behind a tree in the woods should the need arise. My kids have spent their summers doing amazing things including: putting a band together and recording a CD, devising shows and performing them, dancing, painting, swimming and making animated films. I hope my girls will have their own rose tinted summer holiday memories (at time of writing neither can/will pee outside no matter how desperate). Here’s our round up of summer camps and activities. In its ninth year, the Summer YT Project is hosted by Southside Community Centre on Nicolson Street. Rugbytots will be running a five day summer camp (w/c 14th July) for children aged between 5 -7. The camps are designed to get children enthusiastic about the game of rugby, in a fun way. The camps will be run by qualified coaches who are trained in children’s first aid, and have been police checked. THE gREEN TEAm Summer Outdoor Activity Programme The Green Team get children and young people discovering and exploring their local environment through hands on activities and outdoor learning. The Green Team Summer Activity Programme is a great way for kids to have fun in the outdoors, make new friends and take part in a range of exciting environmental activities, discovering and exploring some of the Lothian’s most stunning countryside. We are running our Primary 4-7 programme from 7th-11th July and our S1+ programme from 21st-25th July. We took one of our daughters on a cycle from Edinburgh to Gullane. There was certainly some moaning but at the end of the trip there was also a huge sense of achievement (it was a long way!) and it’s a day she’ll never forget.

Switch roles in the kitchen: if you’re usually the meal-maker, and the children are usually the table-setters, do things the other way round. Let the children plan, shop for and prepare the meal (depending on their ages, they may need some help) while you put together an excitingly-laid table. It’s always good in a family to do things a different way round…everyone learns, and there’s plenty of fun to be had.
Sleep under canvas: if you’re regular campers this one may be a bit too boring – but for families that haven’t camped before, even one night away can be a huge adventure. Alternatively, if you’ve a big enough garden and can borrow a tent from someone, just pitch it outside the back door on a warm evening and dig out your sleeping bags.

Top Photography Tips With the summer holidays upon us there’s no better time to grab your camera and head into the great outdoors with your family for a fun photo shoot! Photographing your own children can be a bit of a battle at times and so here are ten great pointers from top children’s photographer Helen Pugh to help you along the way!

First things first, keep it low key… Never make a big deal about taking your shots, as your kids will probably object! Distraction is always the best technique so maybe pitch a cute tent in the garden, get them messing around with a hosepipe, or perhaps having a wee tea party for their toys. Try anything to take their mind off the fact that you’re wielding a camera! You’ll get lovely natural shots and expressions if they are absorbed in something fun. Try and see the world from their perspective… Taking images of children from above can make them seem insignificant and small. Don’t be afraid to lie on your tummy and take images from a low angle to give your subjects the stature they deserve. This angle will always show them as the little individuals they are, and reveal more of their true character. Put as much energy into the shoot as you’d like back from the kids… If you’re excited and enthused about photography, then they will be too! Veteran photographer Imogen Cunningham once said: ‘which of my photographs is my favourite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow.’ Take them to the light… Harsh flash or unlit blurry pictures can play havoc with getting the shots you’d like. Make things easier from the start by taking your mini models into good light! If indoors then choose the brightest room and use some great window light. Even better, take them outdoors for beautiful natural light, no scary flash required! Stay in the shade if the weather is too bright to avoid squinting eyes and harsh shadows. Learn your settings… Dust off your camera manual and see what your kit can do. Most cameras have an automatic sports setting or one for kids and pets. Both are ideal for photographing children as they allow your camera to shoot faster, freezing movement and capturing all the action. Or better still learn to use your camera manually! Run with the pack… Toddlers in particular are challenging subjects in front of the camera, as they never stop moving! They are the busiest people you will ever meet so let them be themselves and learn to run with them! Trying to sit them still is always going to be a nightmare and so let them run around while you take your shots.

Explore somewhere new together… Choose a location with lots of places to discover and make that the focus of the afternoon, whilst taking your camera along for the ride. Pack a picnic and some games and make it into a great day out, creating memories as well as great pictures. Ban the word ‘Cheese!’… There’s a particular type of smile practiced by children throughout the land, that special ghoulish grimace pulled when the camera appears. There’s nothing quite like the words ‘say cheese!’ to bring this expression into the open. So keep your little ones laughing and moving, tickle them, pull silly faces and generally act the fool! You’ll find that you get a set of pictures that you’ll cherish for years to come. Take your camera with you wherever you go… The loveliest shots of children are the ones that show their little quirks and special moments, that missing first tooth, dancing in the park, sleeping in their dinner, or those first few steps. Take a small camera around with you in your bag and you’ll be ready for those poignant moments whenever they happen. And lastly, book a professional photographer from time to time! Be a whole family for once, all in front of the camera together and take the pressure off! You already know how wonderful your own family is, how clever and funny your children can be, and how loving you all are together. It’s not my job as a photographer to tell you this although this is what I’ll capture in pin sharp perfection. For me it’s about giving you a fresh perspective and an experience together as a family that will stay with you, whilst taking some beautiful portraits along the way. Summer Days Out Festivals galore, heaps of summer activities and amazing places to visit Edinburgh, once again, you spoil us! Almond Valley Heritage Centre All the family will enjoy a wonderful day out at Almond Valley Heritage Centre, just outside Livingston, West Lothian. Nestled in a pleasant riverside site with woods and green spaces that extend for almost a mile, there's so much to do and see. The picturesque buildings and paddocks of Mill Farm are home to many friendly farm animals, including Highland cattle, rare breed sheep, goats, ponies, horses, and some very inquisitive ducks. jupiter Artland Jupiter Artland is a 100-acre sculpture park just outside Edinburgh, offering hands on art workshops inspired by a magical outdoor environment. Did you know bumblebees have smelly feet and don't have any ears? To learn more fascinating facts about these important pollinators, join the Bumblebee Conservation Trust on a safari at Howden Park, West Lothian, on July 5. Staff from the trust will be there to show you the different species up close and tell you lots of amazing things about bumblebees. The event is suitable for all ages, but children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear appropriate outdoor clothes and footwear. While attendance is free, places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come basis. There will be three walks at 11am, 12pm and 1pm and each walk lasts about 45 minutes. Summer Days Out Edinburgh zoo Visit Edinburgh Zoo for a truly wild day out this summer. Edinburgh Zoo is home to over 1000 amazing animals including the UK’s only giant pandas Yang Guang and Tian Tian, a colony of friendly penguins and the UK’s first koala Joey, Yooranah. This year has also seen the opening of their brand new meerkat plaza, so why not come along and see the meerkat mob in their new digs? There’s lots to see and do at the Zoo. Booktastic fun! From 9 to 25 August the Edinburgh International Book Festival will serve up a feast of world-class literary talent for adults and children. The Book Festival will welcome Nobel, Booker, Pulitzer and Queen of Teen prize-winners, a host of bestselling authors as well as over 40 debut novelists. Audiences of all ages can expect to be entertained and enthralled, to have their imaginations stimulated and to participate in some healthy debates. There is much to enjoy during a visit to the Book Festival. There will be discussions, writing workshops, theatrical performances, poetry readings, storytelling and book signings for everyone from babies to adults. The National mining museum Scotland A 5 Star visitor attraction and winner of the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions "Best Visitor Experience" Award in 2009 and 2013. The Scottish Seabird Centre This summer Professor Egghead is back at the Scottish Seabird Centre, North Berwick, with a live, interactive show. Loyal friends, Teresa the turtle, Percy the puffin and Tommy the tern, will be there every step of the way. Join in them for an incredible adventure to see what it takes to survive in the wild! Purves Puppets Purves Puppets are back in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival performing in their unique style of glow- in -the-dark large scale puppets. 26 July Scotland’s National Airshow 2014 The National Museum of Flight, East Fortune Airfield, East Lothian, EH39 5LF www.nms.ac.uk/airshow Join us at East Fortune Airfield as aircraft old and new take to the skies for an afternoon of breathtaking aerial displays. This summer we welcome back the incredible Red Arrows in their 50th anniversary year, as well as the RAF's supersonic Typhoon. The iconic Avro Lancaster, Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane will form the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and crowd favourites, Sea King and Bell UH-1H Huey helicopters will also be back. Elsewhere the Breitling Wingwalkers will perform their daredevil airborne acrobatics and the RV8ers will fill the sky with smoke trails in their kit-built aircraft. Back on the ground you can meet the pilots and explore our hangars. Then take part in children’s activities, fairground rides and pick up a tasty snack. The Edinburgh Macmillan Art Show raises around £25,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Now in its twelfth year, the show has moved from its usual autumn dates to become part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This year’s exhibition is titled ‘Inspired!’ to reflect the variety and brilliance of the works on display, as well as the work done by Macmillan. Visitors to the show can view, and purchase, original pieces by artists at every stage of their careers, emerging and established.
