SUMMER HOLIDAY CAMPS, CLUBS, CLASSES & WORKSHOPS In not-as-many-weeks-as-you-mightlike-to-think it’s going to be the school summer holidays! School holidays can give a much needed opportunity just to stare into space for a while or at the other end of the spectrum you could fill every second with activities.

Not every moment needs to be timetabled but kids do like to know what they’re doing. And if you’re working you want to know that they are being well looked after, maybe learning a new skill and hopefully having fun all at the same time. As usual when I’m putting this feature together I am suitably annoyed that I fall outside of the age-range to do any of these brilliant sounding camps and workshops!

EDA SUMMER SCHOOL Monday 1 August - Friday 5 August 2022 from 9.00am - 2.00pm daily. The Book Festival returns to Edinburgh College of Art this 13-29 August for two weeks of festival fun! Entry to the Book Festival Village is free and there are hundreds of fun and interactive events, workshops, masterclasses, draw-alongs and performances to enjoy, including lots of free events every day. With 150 events for children of all ages - from babies to young adults – including events with top children’s authors and illustrators, walking tours, and reading sessions in Scots and Gaelic, there’s something to suit everyone in this year’s Baillie Gifford Children’s Programme. The popular Courtyard Stage is back again this year. Sing and dance along to live music created especially for early years and meet your favourite book characters in costume. Enjoy a magical half hour of stories in the Storytime Yurt or if you’re feeling creative, pop along to the Creation Station to make your very own book. If quiet time is more your thing, you can chill out at a yoga session or soak up the atmosphere with a picnic in the grassy courtyard. Looking for an unforgettable high-ropes adventure right on your doorstep? Go Ape Dalkeith and Peebles are the ideal adventurous day trips for the whole family, both less than 25 miles outside of Edinburgh. O IS FOR OPEN GARDENS SCHEME Scotland’s Gardens Scheme was established in 1931 and helps garden owners across Scotland open their gardens to the public to raise money for charity. From cottage gardens to stately homes; allotments to therapeutic and physic gardens; formal gardens to wildlife sanctuaries. Many of the gardens that open under the Scotland’s Gardens Scheme banner are privately owned and therefore normally inaccessible to the public. Free sign up on the day In this fun and immersive play adventure, children will explore what happens inside the nose when things like smoke, dust and pollen get inside and how the nose defends our precious lungs against these invaders. Play will start with a story to set the scene, followed by a journey through a giant nose and then continue with lots of loose-part-play within two large lung-shaped domes. A gentle soundscape of music and breathing will surround the hands-on activity. OKIDO play rangers and lung researchers will be on hand to help with questions and fun! Sign up on the day for a 45-minute session, starting each hour from 10am until (last session) 4pm. This event is for under-fives but parents, carers, grandparents and older siblings are encouraged to join in too! AUGUST Giraffe About Town is a free, family-friendly art trail featuring more than 40 magnificent giraffe sculptures that will take you on a journey across Scotland’s capital this summer. In partnership with Wild in Art, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo are delighted to bring this exciting trail to help the city recover after lockdown and raise much needed funds for wildlife conservation.
