Coming soon to the Scottish Seabird Centre Conservation and education charity, the Scottish Seabird Centre, are about to enter the second stage of their exciting refurbishment programme which will see their Discovery Experience exhibits and interactive live wildlife cameras fully upgraded. The new content will focus on Scotland’s marine wildlife, habitats, seabirds and the challenges facing them including climate change, invasive non-native species and plastic pollution. The all new exhibits have been designed to have cross generational appeal, ensuring there are informative storyboards, mechanical and digital exhibits and games to engage and inform people of all ages and abilities. The already beautifully redesigned café and giftshop will remain open throughout the work on the Discovery Experience, which is due to be completed in late December 2019. The Chocolatarium The Chocolatarium is a new visitor attraction in Edinburgh’s Old Town dedicated completely to chocolate. Visitors learn all about the origins of chocolate, make their own chocolate bars and get the chance to taste a huge range of weird and wonderful chocolates. An expert Chocolate Guide takes visitors on the journey of the chocolate bean. Starting in the jungle of South America and then on to the Chocolate Kitchen were you see, touch and smell your way through the transformation from cocoa bean to chocolate bar. You’ll learn things you never knew about chocolate and see a real chocolate pod up close. Most people’s favourite part is the chocolate bar-making where you can choose your mould design then choose your favourite toppings, like caramel pebbles, chilli, crispy pieces, rose petals, honeycomb, marshmallows and golden sugar…yum. The last part is the Tasting Room. It looks a bit like a whisky or wine tasting room with cushioned oak chairs and tasting wheels, but instead of alcohol, there is chocolate! EDINBURGH DANCE ACADEMY EDA, recently voted highest ranked dance school in the UK and Ireland offers classes and exams in RAD Ballet, the faculty being led by RAD Ballet examiner Julie Mitchell. We’re now in that time of year when we need to get outside for sanity, and an optimistic dose of vitamin D, but ultimately any days out need to feature an inside element.

Earlier this year we sent Kirsty and her family off to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Despite living in Edinburgh for over 14 years, having a 7 and 4 year old and being married to a History teacher, to my very great shame I had never actually been to the Palace of Holyroodhouse before. I knew it was there, of course, but it had just never really occurred to me to think about what it would be like, or to take the kids. So when we were given the chance to go and road test the new family room and take the tour, and report back for Families Magazine, we jumped at the chance. What a revelation it was! They really have Dad Charlie with Hector and Lottie eked every possible bit of kid-friendly fun out of the place, and we had a superb day out as a result. Top of the entertainment pile is phone-sized gadget - on a lanyard for ease and safety – which is given, along with headphones, to every visitor to take them through the tour. This offers so much more than the audio guides we’d seen before, and the kids were immediately hooked. At every one of the 20 or so stops on the guide there were bitesized video explanations – led by cartoon guides – alongside other games and interactive snippets which brought both the history and the present Royal use of the Palace brilliantly and vividly to life. Superbly intuitive, these guides were simple enough for even our 4 year old to use entirely independently, and he engaged with the Palace and its stories in a way I have never seen in any other setting. So keen was he to complete every stage he refused to leave until he had watched every video! As well as the fabulous multimedia activities, the Palace offers a newly-renovated Family Room, which ups the entertainment ante still further. Multi-sensory activities bring to life the Lottie sights, sounds and smells of life in the Palace in days gone by, inspired largely by the room’s former use as the Palace kitchens. A small play kitchen, clever crown-wearing mirrors, and a design-your-own Coat of Arms provide plenty of amusement, but it was the plentiful and beautiful collection of dressing-up outfits which proved to be the biggest hit with our two, as well as the Queen’s very well behaved corgi on a lead! It really has been beautifully done, and is a space to which you could go even if you had not done the whole tour. I imagine it would be a particularly lovely place to meet a buddy and while away some time with pre-schoolers before heading off for coffee and cake in the lovely café.
