Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is inviting the littlest kids to come join the fun and for 2019. All activities will be themed around space. From galaxies to stars, spacemen to aliens, discover outer space with fun-filled activities and workshops for everyone to enjoy, especially aimed at teeny tiny toddlers. Teeny Tiny Toddler Fest is on from Monday 7 - Friday 11 January. Activities will include favourites from previous years, from the Cloud Factory to crawl through kaleidoscopes and testing your reaction times to a cuddle with Cameron, the friendly Camera Obscura bear. As well as host of our own specially curated activities, they’ve teamed up with a range of exciting partners, making 2019 their biggest event yet. Head along and play with the fabulous Mess Around Edinburgh and their multi-sensory Messy Play Sessions. Get hands-on with The Young Engineers, providing educational fun to science and engineering. Rockets and outer space have never been so accessible with Fun Scientists. The usual five floors of illusions will also be open, allowing you to explore our over 100 interactive, hands-on exhibits. Little Buds Playgroup Little Buds Playgroup is a charity run playgroup based in Tranent Town Hall and welcomes all children aged 2-5, from all areas. The group operates Monday to Thursday 9.15-11.45am during term time. Every day they have a variety of activities for children including water and sand, playdoh, art, craft and messy play, home corner, role play, small world play, story corner, music area and soft play apparatus. Activities in each area are set based on children's developmental needs, interests and information from parents. The children have opportunities to develop their social and emotional development and wellbeing playing with other children of similar age and learn to take turns, share and think about others feelings. Don’t hide away from making a will We all know it’s important to make a will for our family, but many of us don’t have one in place. We ask Lindsay MacLean of Gibson Kerr solicitors, Edinburgh, all about the will making process. Do I really need to make a will? If you have any assets, particularly if you own a house, it’s important you have a will to ensure they go where you want them to on your death. Plus, dealing with your estate after you die is quicker and usually cheaper if you have a will.
What will happen if I don’t have a will? It depends on your situation, such as whether you are married, have children and who your nearest relatives are. If you are married, your spouse or civil partner will receive a certain amount of assets from your estate. If your estate is worth more than that amount, your children will receive a share as well. If you have an unmarried partner, they don’t automatically inherit from you and, if you have been living together at the date of your death, they could make a claim against your estate but that would mean a court action.
Is it expensive? The costs of a will varies from firm to firm. At Gibson Kerr we charge £300 for a will (inclusive of VAT), which is about average for solicitors in Edinburgh.
How long does it take? It usually takes a few weeks from when we first meet you to you having your will signed. But we can prepare a will very quickly and can even have a will prepared and signed the same day if needed.

Do I need to know details of everything I own? It is useful if you come to your solicitors meeting with a list of your assets and estimated values to help them know if there are any specific issues to deal with. Additionally, you should think about whether you want to leave any specific items that you own to anyone.
Can my will contain my wishes about things other than my estate? You might include funeral plans, if you have any. Any other points you wish to cover in your will that don’t relate to your estate or your funeral can be included in a separate document, usually referred to as a “letter of wishes” which would be stored by your will.
What if I have another child and it isn’t named in the will? We normally try to cover the possibility of you having more children at the time your will is prepared. For instance, you can leave your estate to your existing children and any other children you may have in the future. This means that your will does not need to be updated if you have any children. It is, however, advisable to review your will regularly anyway to see if any updates are needed.

What’s Silver Clay?: Silver clay is amazing - that’s what! It starts off like clay that you can mould, build etc, the same as a normal piece of clay but once it’s dry the magic happens! When fired the clay turns into silver what?!
How was the day? The workshop is run in a beautiful and welcoming home environment. What did i do? Evening workshop - Asymmetrical tied bouquet
What’s that then? It’s the height of floral fashion, that’s what!
and in a bit more detail: Based on the essential spiral of the classic bouquet this technique moves towards creating more interesting shapes and textures.
hoW as the evening?: The 3 hour workshop begins with the offer of tea/coffee or Prosecco… it was a full house of requests for the latter on the evening I was there. Narcissus Flower School is on London Road and is a gorgeous space fitted out with reclaimed retro furnishings - the lights are from an old theatre and the tables we worked on used to be the dance floor at the George Hotel. You might be more familiar with their gorgeous shop on Broughton Street. Aside from the beautiful setting every nook and cranny is packed with the most amazing flowers. The wonderful Emilia began by giving us a demonstration of a small asymmetrical bouquet. Adding one flower at a time she built up a stunning arrangement and gave tips and instructions before letting us loose with our own generous selection of blooms and foliage. A coffee break with a generous array of nibbles and then onto the big final arrangement. Expanding on the array of flowers, foliage and grasses she showed us how to create a generous hand tied bouquet of our own. Chat, advice, support and lots of fab tips later I had my own bouquet.
What did i come aWay With? This being an evening workshop I went into it feeling slightly weary. Fast forward three hours and I was buzzing with my new found skills - further buoyed up by a bus journey home juggling the biggest bunch of flowers I’ve ever been lucky enough to have my hands on. The Narcissus Flower School workshops are presented to students wishing to learn the traditional craft of floristry in a modern school. These practical, hands-on classes are suitable for the complete beginner through to those who are planning a career in floristry. “As experienced leaders in our field, we offer this unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience of our natural style”. Telling Stories With Your Children Telling stories with your children is probably one of the most important things that you can do with them, behind feeding & clothing them! Here Lorna Shields from It’s in the Bag shares some top tips for storytelling with children and explains her love of stories. © Vicky Wilson Photography
Be Present Treat storytime as a little bit of sacred time for you and your children. How many times have you told a story to your child while your mind has been completely somewhere else? We’re all guilty of it when reading our own books as we read the same page repeatedly as our mind wanders off. Life can be hectic, and time is precious - it will not slow down - so try to enjoy these moments by being fully present.
Improvise & Escape There is so much you can do with a story other than simply read it. When my children were younger one of the things they loved was acting out a story. Two of their favourites were Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks and the 3 Bears (I bet you could tell both stories right now!). There would be a fight about who was playing which character and often we ended up with two Goldilocks. Or we had to tell the story 5 times, so they could all get a shot of being the wolf! One of the wonderful things about a good story is the ability to transport you to another place - you can go on a journey together without leaving your house, imagining all the places you’re describing.
Eye to Eye Oral storytelling is the art of telling a story without a book. There is an old Scottish traveller proverb which sums this up perfectly, ‘the story is told eye to eye, mind to mind and heart to heart’. It is something distinctly different to reading a story and can produce a special connection between people. We all tell stories every day; at the school gates, in the coffee shop, on the bus, the list goes on. Try putting the book down and telling the story without reading, your children could join in with ideas and suggestions throughout!
Bond Take a minute - read a story to your child - it’s an important time to centre yourself and they will love you for it. It also doesn’t just have to be at bedtime, when quite often you’re rushing to get finished. Try to tell stories whenever you can, at the breakfast table, on the way to school, as you go around the shops. My children love hearing their birth stories, recently we went on a 5km walk, it was not going well, after the first few steps one of my sons had already started moaning. I decided to tell them the stories of their births, followed by some tales that we made up as we went, and the 1hr passed so quickly - a story is the perfect distraction for moany bairns!
Voices I am one of 4 girls and when we were growing up we had Storyteller books and cassettes arrive via the post. They were utterly captivating and compelling and the four of us would fight over who was turning the page when we heard the ping. The story of Gobbolino the witches’ cat was one of my favourites, although how there were so many others that are imprinted firmly in my brain, I can even remember the characters voices. Try it - read a story and put on different voices for the characters, it might even make you laugh, your child might want to try it too. Don’t worry what it sounds like - just do it!
Puppets Everyone loves puppets, trust me some of the biggest gasps of delight I get when telling stories are from the adults present when the puppets make an appearance. Get a finger puppet, draw two dots on your finger, puppets don’t have to be fancy...one of the funniest puppets I have is a stick! The kids love him.
You don’t have to be a master storyteller to share these moments with your child, it doesn’t really matter about implementing everything in this article, these are just ideas, the most important thing is that you give it a go!
