The aim is to promote dignity and self-esteem in children from families experiencing financial hardship by providing school uniform and other essentials for the school day. Can you help by ‘sponsoring’ a local child this summer i.e. buying a set of uniform? Last year they provided over 300 packs of uniform, and expect to be even busier this summer. When a child or teenager goes to school in the “wrong” clothes they can be vulnerable to social exclusion, bullying, low self-esteem, and poor mental health. “We aim to tackle these issues at an early stage by helping youngsters to walk into school with their heads held high and not standing out from the crowd”. Filmmaking is the ideal way for young people to explore their creativity, build confidence, work collaboratively and develop new skills such as planning and organising. Following on from their fun summer schools, the excitement continues with after-school weekly academy from Friday 24 August, and workshops run every Friday from 2pm to 5pm during term time throughout the year. There are two age groups; ages 9 to 12, and ages 13 to 18. Students will gain knowledge and expertise in acting for camera, scriptwriting, camera skills and post production, through a series of hands-on workshops. Pupils win £3000 for Bereavement Charity
S3 pupils at Morrison’s Academy were awarded the cheque from the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative as part of the school’s Civics programme. Participating in the scheme for the first time this year, the pupils were challenged to create a persuasive presentation on a local charity they believe is best placed to tackle an issue they are passionate about. Working in teams, each group researched social issues in Perth and Kinross to choose their charity and create an engaging case for the YPI funding. The winning group, made up of five S3 girls, created a powerful and compelling case for bereavement counselling charity Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland. The charity, staffed by volunteers, has offered bereavement support to people throughout Scotland since 1959. Modern Studies teacher and leader of the initiative within the school, Miss Clare Cully, said “I am delighted that £3000 was granted to Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland at our Grand Final. The judges and audience were extremely impressed with the creative and emotional presentation from the winning team. We are very proud of the hard work and enthusiasm they – and all the pupils involved – displayed throughout the process.” The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative is an international programme that has positively engaged over 135,000 secondary school students across Scotland and awarded over £2 million pounds to small, local, social service charities.

Celebrate Play on Playday UK! Playday is the national day for play in the UK, and will take place this year on Wednesday 1 August. Playday is an annual celebration of children's play with thousands of children and families playing outside at events across the UK. It is an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of children's play and the need for quality play opportunities every day of the year. From small-scale community events to thousands of children taking part in events organised in parks and open spaces – Playday is celebrated by each community in a way that suits them. Being a Host Family is a GREAT thing to do At Bright World our Host families are as happy as our students and their parents Bright World has offered guardianship to students across the UK since 2000 and is fully AEGIS accredited which means our safeguarding standards are of a high level and constantly being monitored. Finding host families for our students is an important part of our job and with the increase in demand we need more in Scotland. Finding Hosts with the Most Having made the long journey from their home country, international students often only go back home during the long holidays. This means that when their boarding houses close for short weekends and half term weeks, our students need somewhere to stay. These bright, brave and talented children have had to cope with leaving their families to embark on the challenge of a lifetime and so when their holidays come they really need to feel comfortable and yearn for a host family who will take them in and offer them a true home from home. A win-win situation for all Not only do our host families get a huge amount of satisfaction from seeing their student settle down and feel comfortable in their homes, they find the experience very good for their own children. Of course, although money is not the first incentive for our host families, they do benefit from a nightly rate and therefore it does create a valuable extra income for all the family. in the School Holidays The summer holidays are a great time for families to spend time together. However, it can also be a time when children forget some of the skills they have mastered at school. Miss Evans, a year 6 teacher, stated “Teachers often find that children begin the new school year having forgotten key skills. It is important that children have opportunities over the summer break to continue to develop their abilities.”

Give your child a little note book to jots ideas down whilst you are out and about, then write up what you’ve done. Take lots of pictures as these are a great tool to help children who find writing tricky. Encourage them to describe what is happening in the picture to get their creativity flowing.

Let your friends and family know what you’ve been up to. They’re only short so are a wonderful way to get a bit of writing going during the holidays. If your child is reluctant to write, then why not try a postcard app like ‘By Post’? They can take their own pictures to make into postcards and type their message.

This summer, the Scottish Seabird Centre is taking inspiration from a whole host of super-heroes, with an interactive science show and family-friendly puppet performances. There are two puppet shows for little ones aged 2+. In What’s for Snack? Craig the Crab enjoys sing-a-long fun, exploring the issue of marine litter. He also features in Lost! – finding his way back home via beach and rockpools with help from friends old and new. But there is danger from above. Older children (age 6+) are invited to attend the interactive science show, Avengers: Animal Division. Professor Egghead returns to show audiences how animals can defend themselves from attack in weird and wonderful ways. From exploding ants, squirting octopi and spitting birds. Coming this summer you can join the tribe for daring daily adventures exploring some of the wildest and most remote corners of the Almond Valley site. Build your shelter, set up camp, forage for food, keep a look out for wild animals, and learn how to survive in the wild for at least half an hour. move, make Colour, Create! The summer will be awash with colour at the National Galleries of Scotland. Move, Make, Colour, Create! is a month-long summer holiday activities programme for children of all ages. It takes place at a new pop-up play area within the beautiful, extensive grounds at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Belford Road, Edinburgh. Four weeks of FREE outdoor art activities kicks off with a special family fun day on Sunday 15 July. This is followed by daily family sessions from 2.00 until 4.00 pm, which promise to bring the art play area to life, encouraging creative play in one of Edinburgh’s loveliest outdoor spaces. Come rain or shine, the Gallery will also be hosting daily indoor activities at the same time, with different family-led events running each day, all focussed on colourful, hands-on making. Also this summer solve the puzzles of our planet with ‘Operation Earth.’ This amazing family experience gives you an insight into how scientists are working to solve some of the biggest environmental challenges on Earth. Earthy is feeling a little under the weather and is going to the doctors for a check-up. Join us together with the help of expert scientists, as we investigate what is bothering Earthy. Become a trainee environmental scientist and help us investigate Earthy’s land, air and oceans, and see if together we can identify and find solutions to Earthy’s problems. As well as the family show, we’ll have lots of other bespoke hands-on activities to take part in throughout the day! Over a series of workshops, they will use visual arts, puppetry and drama to explore stories and traditions from the cities that have been their home. They will design a new city inspired by the different places they have lived, creating characters to live in this city.
