MagicFest 2018 Moves to MAY! To celebrate the move from July to May MagicFest has an action-packed programme that encourages you to ‘let your imagination fly’! Children thrive on being able to explore, take risks and make their own discoveries in an outdoor environment, even if they are based in towns and cities. In Edinburgh, The Murrayfield Nursery embraces the outdoors and makes the most of Corstorphine Hill on their doorstep, taking children out in all weathers for Forest School sessions. Exploring the imaginary is also a way for children to safely explore their fears and the unknown. Monkey Drama is extremely passionate about this and the impact imaginary play can have on children’s development and here are some of the reasons why…

These bright, brave and talented children have had to cope with leaving their families to embark on the challenge of a lifetime and so when their holidays come they really need to feel comfortable and yearn for a host family who will take them in and offer them a true home from home. A win-win situation for all Not only do our host families get a huge amount of satisfaction from seeing their student settle down and feel comfortable in their homes, they find the experience very good for their own children. Of course, although money is not the first incentive for our host families, they do benefit from a nightly rate and therefore it does create a valuable extra income for all the family. Believing in themselves as an individual. Through pretend play, children can be who they want to be. They can learn what they like and don’t like, they can see what might make them afraid and learn it is okay to feel certain ways, because it is okay to not be the same as everyone else. Understanding and managing feelings. While participating in role play, children can explore why they feel certain ways by engaging in real life scenarios and playing them out in their own way with their peers or alone. Being someone else. Through doing this, children can explore the balance of power and looking at things from other points of view. For example, being a “Mummy” and being “in charge”, being a Doctor and “helping others”, being a hairdresser/mechanic etc…having a job and feeling important. They don’t even “know” they are doing it. Imaginary and pretend play is so natural and fun for children that they completely immerse themselves in it and are unaware that they are learning, so they love doing it because they love playing and don’t see it as a task or chore.
Learning right and wrong By playing out imaginary situations and coming up with solutions and being challenged by fellow little people, children can explore and learn from invented situations without feeling embarrassed or judged. These are just some of the reasons drama in the early years is of great benefit to children. Monkey Drama has tailored their classes to help children to play out a huge variety of imaginary situations and stories, and delve right into the heart of it through pretend play! Maggie’s Mittens and more Local mum and author, Coo Clayton, now has a second book due out this summer! “I’ve always enjoyed writing. But, with 3 young children and teaching 3 days a week, most of my writing consisted of shopping lists, marking jotters and answering e-mails! I decided to join a writing group to help me focus. The group met in Waterstones on Princess Street once a month and our focus was giving writing critiques, general support, coffee and cake. I never dreamed that a year later I’d have my book launch in front of 150 people in the same bookshop!” After much deliberation and persuasion Caroline sent her first script off to a publishing company in November 2016. “I told nobody that I had done this, as I was expecting a polite 'no thank you' response. So I was shocked when they phoned me a few weeks later. We met in January and they asked to see more of what I was working on”. Fast forward 6 months and a book was born! Maggie’s Mittens is a Scottish themed tale about a stubborn wee girl who doesn’t want to wear her mittens, perfect for ages 2-7. “My daughter (Maggie) is not always the easiest to look after, but if it wasn't for her toddler tantrums this book would not have happened. Life has very quickly changed. I’m doing Author visits at Schools, taking bookings for book festivals and doing a Maggie’s Mittens tour around Scotland. A second book is in the pipeline and is due to be released this June 2018. Hard work, perseverance, good fortune and good friends have all helped to make this happen.”

Tennis for Kids being served up at Edinburgh Leisure Edinburgh Leisure is taking part in ‘Tennis For Kids’, organised by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) at the Meadows Tennis Courts. In 2017, 20,000 children in Great Britain took part in this tennis starter course for kids. This year, lessons are open to children aged between 4 and 11 years. For just £25 every child will receive six high quality lessons, developed by experts at the LTA, as well as a special Tennis for Kids Babolat rackets, ball set, and personalised T-shirt delivered right to your door. Children will learn how to hold a racket, develop a rally and will learn all the essentials that are key to building confidence and a foundation in tennis. Tennis is a great way for children to learn new skills, providing valuable life skills including respect, team work, fair play and concentration. Most importantly they’ll be having fun and making new friends and hopefully it will be the start of a life-long love for tennis. Start young! Edinburgh Buggy Walks have 9 different weekly walks and nearly 800 members.
These free walks are suitable for early after delivery as they are a gentle foray into the fresh air and company of others with a café to sit down in at the end of the walk. Orienteering is an outdoor adventure activity that provides both physical and mental exercise. Local clubs, Interlopers (INT) and Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club (ESOC) will be organising a series of events in Edinburgh on Saturdays throughout the year aimed at beginners. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on a special map and decide on the best route to get from point to point until you reach the finish. You can go on your own or with others. People of all ages are welcome to take part. No special equipment is needed, just suitable footwear and clothing which should include leg cover i.e. tracksuit bottoms or similar, bearing in mind it might be a bit muddy. Dates and locations for the next two months are: 5th May Colinton Del Interlopers 16th Jun Bonaly ESOC There will be a series of courses available from complete beginners to those with more experience. Help and assistance will be on hand to tell you what to do. Just turn up between 1.30pm and 2.30pm. (Costs are £3 per child or £6 for adults or family groups). Parkrun and Junior Parkrun If you haven’t come across the phenomena that is Parkrun check out your local options. Paul Sinton-Hewitt founded parkrun in 2004. His firm belief is that parkrun’s simple concept should – and really can – exist in every town in the world. So no-one should ever have to pay to go running in their community regularly, safely and for fun. Volunteers set up 5km races in parks across the UK and there are now 500 locations. They also do shorter runs for kids aged 4 to 14, which are 2km long. Park runs take place every Saturday while Junior Park Runs take place on Sunday. They are open to all and free. Newhailes storybook playpark is now open

Weehailes Playpark, Musselburgh’s newest family-friendly visitor attraction is now open. Set in the grounds of the National Trust for Scotland’s Newhailes House and Gardens, the playpark looks like it could have emerged from the pages of a fairytale. Inspired by the story of the historic East Lothian house and its important role in the Scottish Enlightenment, the playpark has a book-related theme, with the ‘library’, complete with stained glass window taking centre stage. Turrets, slides and high-level walkways provide lots of opportunities for younger visitors to explore. The playpark is the centrepiece of a £2.4 million project by the conservation charity to revitalise the Newhailes landscape which is of international importance for its designed features and fell into disrepair after World War II. General Manager for Edinburgh and East, Linda Wigley said: “We’ve been working really hard over the winter months to add new features and restore old ones. These changes are all part of our plan to breathe new life into Newhailes and we can’t wait to share these with our visitors. Weehailes looks wonderful and is sure to go down really well with our younger visitors.” Visitor facilities have also been improved, with a new catering facility placed next to the playpark, new interpretation and more parking. Trust Membership gives supporters access to Weehailes Playpark for free, as well as access to over 90 properties across Scotland for 2 adults and up to 6 kids, free parking at all of their sites and a brilliant magazine and property guide.

Our facilities are furnished to a high standard and include a messy room, a playroom and a kitchen, all with full disabled access. EDInBUrGH DAnCE ACADEmY EDA are delighted to be running our 8th Summer School! Last year was just fantastic with over 100 students attending. There was much laughter, great friendships forged, fabulous choreography, lasting memories made and a lot of fun had! Lots of tired, happy dancers at the end of each day. This year we already have some amazing plans in place and we can't wait to see everyone there. mIDLoTHIAn SnowSPorTS Enjoy an action packed summer at the Midlothian Snowsports Centre, Hillend. Whether you enjoy skiing, snowboarding or tubing, there is an activity for you! The five day summer ski and snowboard camps are available weekly from the 9th July to 13th August. Visitors can enjoy the stunning views across Edinburgh and take a chairlift ride to the top of the hill. Either ride back down or walk down one of the Pentland Hill’s walking trails. The tubing runs are open most days through the summer holidays. Zipping down the hill in an inflatable tube is made easier with a travellator to help you back up again – it is fast, fun and exciting. Revenge, forbidden love, confusion, disguise and witty mockery ensue… Following last year's 'tour de force' production of Creepy Macbeth, Little Shakespeare Company returns to Edinburgh Fringe in 2018 with Love's Labour's Lost. Saturday 19 May Tidemarks City Arts Centre This fun, interactive workshop by artist and beachcomber Katie Fowlie of Scottish Beach Finds will encourage participants to create pigments and explore mark-making using ingredients foraged from along the natural coastal landscape. Participants will also make their own brushes from materials such as driftwood and wild grasses, and combine these in a playful manner with their pigments made from organic raw materials. 23 May world orienteering Day Edinburgh clubs, Interlopers (INT) and Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club (ESOC) will be offering a series of free fun activities in the Meadows (close by the Tennis Courts) from 11am until 3pm.
