According to a survey by Workingmums.co.uk, almost three quarters of working mums identify flexible work as being crucial to getting more women into senior roles. The survey shows that mums feel flexible working is vital for them to manage work and family life and that 60% of those who work flexibly would like even more flexibility. So what can individuals do to help persuade their employers to agree to them working flexibly? Here are some tips: • Think through what the job requires and whether the tasks you have to perform can be done at a different location i.e from home, or at times outside of the standard working day. Take account of any additional costs or challenges this might involve and discuss them honestly. • Give examples of the ways in which your work can be successfully carried out under any new working pattern you are proposing, and show that it will not harm the business. Point out any business advantages. • Research some case studies, ideally in your sector that shows how the work pattern you are suggesting can be mutually beneficial to you and your employer. • If managers are dubious, suggest a trial period. • Have a compromise solution as a back-up. How many parents set a New Year resolution to get fit? Trying to follow through on it past the third week in January is the toughest part. Getting fit and staying fit is a challenge for everyone and when you’re the parent of young kids it's another demand to throw into the chaos of everyday life. We all know that being a parent takes a lot of energy and to be fair a big chunk of our time can get eaten up with getting our kids to all their activities. This can mean that regular exercise for us can be something that is left on the “to-do” list. The time and effort it takes to make exercise a regular part of your week will pay back a hefty return so it is worth building it in. Better health, weight loss or weight management are the main reasons most people work out but it can also help with stress, mental health and sleep issues. We have lots of parents who spin at PedalHouse and we have some tips for hassled parents trying to fit in some training. 1. Plan, plan, plan, commit: You need to make a plan. Find times that you are most likely to be able to work out - then book up a session so you are committed. 2. Choose exercise to deliver your goal: Don't waste time and money on something ineffective. If it’s weight loss or a high return for a short timescale you need some high intensity work: spinning is ideal, burning 500 calories per class and building aerobic capacity very quickly as well as giving a huge endorphin rush to leave you feeling energised. If you want something to help with flexibility you may want to do some yoga or pilates – or better still mix it up and do some cardio and some strength work. Don't let it get boring or too easy! 3. Get support if you can: If possible find someone to get fit with to keep you going. You are less likely to skip sessions if you have made an arrangement to train with a pal or if you can get childcare, maybe even your partner – the new date night! 4. Get the right gear: You can get great comfortable active wear to suit every budget - from the supermarket to high-end fitness brands. Comfy clothing is a must. 5. Hydrate, recover and fuel properly: Drink water, take rest and eat properly. Come along and try one of our classes. Clubs&Classes EXPlOrE lEArNING GETS BEhIND “MOrE MAThS FOr EvErYONE!” In November 2017, the government released their budget which stated they were committed to investing more money for maths teaching in schools. Whatever your political belief and aside from the debate, we can all get behind the chancellor’s sentiment of “more maths for everyone”. Helping the next generation to master maths concepts, be confident mathematicians and proud problem solvers is our responsibility as educators and parents. Charlotte Gater, Head of Education at Explore Learning added "This way we can help children to develop the skills needed, not only in so many jobs, but also to be financially healthy. Whilst listening to the budget speech, and the chancellor’s comments on how much the country spends on debt, it is clear that we need to teach children the importance of good financial management. Charlotte has put together some top tips to help you help your children have a good understanding of budgets: 1
Get them involved with shopping. Give them a budget to spend for the week and get them to meal plan. Encourage them to shop around different brands or supermarkets to see if they can get more for their money.

Teach them about interest rates. Does your child turn to the bank of Mum and Dad to borrow money? Give them some options. 1) They can either save up their pocket money or do jobs to earn the money. 2) You will give them the money upfront, but they then have to pay you back with interest. So, if they want £50 they have to give you £55 back over a set period of time. This way they will start to understand about the debt they could create by using loans.

Learn about pay. A great activity we do with our older members at Explore Learning is to get them to research how much they would get paid for their ideal job. They then have to see how far their monthly wages would go. Looking at tax, rent, bills etc gets them to see how much disposable income they would have!

Making the break – divorce for families in Scotland The end of a marriage is a difficult and stressful time, however, with the right help and advice it doesn’t have to be as complicated or costly as you might think. We want to help families who are starting this difficult journey with some expert advice to make the process smoother for all of you.
Kids come first Divorce is hard on kids, but they will likely already be aware of problems, so it’s best to be honest with them as soon as you can. Take time to explain what’s happening, together if possible. Be positive and reassuring – they need to know that they are still loved and many things will remain the same for them. One of the first and most important things to agree is is who will look after the children. In many cases, parents arrange for kids to spend an equal amount of time with each parent. However, this isn't always the best option for everyone. If you can’t come to an amicable agreement on this, you can ask the court to decide. The courts will generally view that children should maintain contact with both parents, unless there is a strong reason to suggest that isn’t best for them.
Let people know Apart from speaking to close family and friends to advise them of your break up, there are some practicalities that you should sort out sooner rather than later. If you have joint accounts, you may wish to close these accounts or transfer them into the name of one of you. The bank will advise you on how best to proceed. You might also need to get in touch with your landlord, insurance companies, tax office, mortgage lender and gas, electricity and telephone companies to inform them of your change in circumstances. Make a list and do this all in one session if you can. If you’re moving, you will need to inform your child’s school or nursery of changes in address. It is a good idea to speak to the school at some point anyway to make them aware of the situation. Don’t worry, you won’t be the first separating parent they have spoken to.
Make financial arrangements While you are married, couples are legally obliged to provide financial support for each other. So you may be entitled to money called aliment from your partner while you are separated and the divorce proceedings are ongoing. Again, if you can agree who takes on what payments and any financial support needed for children ahead of court proceedings, this will make for an easier divorce.

Think about property Even after separation you can legally stay in your family home, unless a court orders you to leave. If you don’t come to an agreement on this, the court will make orders about the home. Sometimes it is agreed that the parent with most responsibility for the children will stay at home with them. If you rent and have a joint tenancy, you can decide who remains as a tenant and who should look for a new home. Again, if you don’t agree, the decision can be made by the court. Make sure you look into any Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reductions you might be entitled to.

Time Out For Screen Time There is a lot of misleading information about the damage that 'screens' cause our eyes and vision, here is a quick summary to keep you up to date with the facts. What is blue light? Blue light is a high-energy visible light which has shorter wavelengths, it is naturally present in sunlight but is also something we can see from screens such as TVs, computers, smartphones and tablets.
Can blue light damage my child’s eyes? There is currently no scientific evidence that blue light causes damage to the eyes. However, there is evidence to suggest that carrying out near tasks, involving looking at something close-up, such as using mobile devices, screen time and reading a book, can increase eye strain for those who do this for long periods of time.
What is digital eye strain? Digital eye strain happens when a lot of time is spent using near vision, for example, reading on screen or playing online games. It does not cause permanent damage to your eyes but can be uncomfortable. One of the main symptoms is temporary blurred vision but other signs such as sore and tired eyes, dry eye and headaches are also associated with digital eye strain.
Can blue light affect my child’s sleep pattern? Using screens close to bedtime may contribute to poorer sleep, which may mean your child’s concentration levels are lower during the day. This may be because blue light is linked to the suppression of the hormone melatonin which makes us feel sleepy. However, there is a range of other factors linked to disrupted sleep.
Can blue light filtered lenses help? Some people and many of my patients report that their blue light coatings make their eyes feel more comfortable and have reduced their symptoms of digital eye strain but there is no clear scientific evidence to support this. There is also no evidence that these kinds of coatings prevent eye disease.

Why have I heard that blue light is harmful to eye health? Several studies have been carried out into the effects of blue light, and research in this area is still ongoing. Some past studies have revealed that exposure to blue light can lead to changes in animals’ eyes. However, because the time and intensity of exposure to blue light in these studies was far more than that of natural daylight and that of screens, this does not show that blue light is harmful to eyes.
Is there a link between screen time and short-sightedness? Short-sightedness, or myopia, is increasing throughout the world. Family history, ethnic background, environment (living indoors, in cities) and carrying out near tasks, such as screen use, have all been linked to the development of myopia. However, there is no clear evidence to suggest that screen time alone is the direct cause. But, there is good evidence to suggest that children who spend more time outdoors are at lower risk of developing short-sightedness. Ground breaking research has resulted in a specialised daily contact lenses for children which can slow myopic progression by up to 59%. Tips for keeping your child’s eyes healthy Get them outdoors – regular play and exercise can help prevent or reduce the development of myopia (short-sightedness). Studies show two hours of outdoor activity a day is ideal. Use night settings - using night settings, if your device has them, may help children sleep by reducing the amount of blue light given off by the screen during night-time hours Make sure digital devices are turned off at least an hour before bedtime Book your child in for a sight test every two years, from the age of three, or more often if your optometrist recommends it. If your child is myopic consider myopic management to reduce their myopic progression. But before you get going, let’s just check we’re all familiar with the rules of engagement! Good Party Etiquette? Is there such a thing?

Who gets Invited? Your child has already been to three parties this year where the entire class was invited. But the thought of 30 small people bouncing off walls makes you break out in sweat. Remember “entire class” parties are your choice – you don’t have to give them just to keep other parents happy. The reality is that children WILL be happy with a small gathering so long as it feels special to them.
Be Subtle about Invitations Who is and isn’t invited to a party is guaranteed to cause playground ructions, so be tactful. Unless you’re inviting the whole class, don’t start handing invitations out as the kids are lining up to go into school.
Be Sure to RSVP Planning a children’s party is stressful enough without having to chase people who haven’t replied. Replying promptly will earn you lots of gold stars with the party child’s parents, so just do it. And whatever you do, do NOT turn up on the day without RSVPing.
Check Before you Take Siblings Don’t assume no one will mind if a younger or older sibling tags along. When the entertainer has a strict limit on numbers and the party parents have worked out exactly how many fairy cakes they need, added extras can cause a real headache. So make sure you check beforehand.

Thank-you Notes? This is obviously a personal choice but it’s a nice thing to do with your child once the chaos of their birthday has faded. Taking some quiet time to remember what gifts your child received and who came to the party can be a really fun activity and assures your child doesn’t take the whole experience for granted.

On weekday afternoons during January, February and March bring along your favourite teddy bear, doll, or any other soft toy, for a special woodland picnic in the tearoom at Almond Valley. Here there are games, camping adventures, and many interesting things to explore. Once the fun is done and the soft toys get sleepy, it’s time to tip-toe next door and indulge in a delicious afternoon tea. There’s a delightful array of sandwiches, savouries and temping cakes for the grown-ups, while the pre-schoolers get their very own tiered platter of dainty tasty nibbles.
