Welcome to our 100th issue and the start of a whole new year! In 2000 the first issue of Families Edinburgh was born. Back then it was a much smaller magazine printed in black and white - yes, we’re that old! Since then nearly 17 years and 99 issues have gone by to get us here, to our 100th issue! We love letting you know about everything that’s going on for families in Edinburgh - and, as you’ll read issue after issue, there’s no shortage of things to do! I still get excited when I see a copy of Families sticking out of someone’s buggy and I genuinely well up when someone tells me how much they love the magazine. So, thank you. 2017 Fringe Programme As part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s 70th anniversary celebrations, school pupils in Scotland will provide the inspiration for the 2017 Fringe Programme cover. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society have announced plans for the relaunch of the Fringe Schools Poster Competition that will see winning competition entries selected from three age categories, provide the inspiration for three individual cover designs for the 2017 Fringe Programme. In addition to three overall winners in 2017, 14 regional winners will be selected. Their work will be featured in an exhibition of shortlisted entries that will take place at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh between May and August 2017, before touring to locations around Scotland. School pupils have until the 03 March 2017 to submit their entries. The competition is open to all Primary 1 to Senior 6 pupils at schools in Scotland. Edinburgh Young Musicians The aim of Edinburgh Young Musicians is to help all children to enjoy music and to develop their individual musical potential, whatever that may be. Now in its 19th year, EYM has 370 three to 18 year-olds attending its Saturday morning classes. Musical Play classes (final pre-school year and P1) are open to children with no musical experience. P2 Musical Workshop classes and P3 Beginners' Musical Foundations classes offer a one-year course designed to prepare children to learn an instrument or sing in a choir. Parent Parent Lynne Munro is married to Donald and Mum to Callum (10) and Elliot (6) and lives in Fairmilehead. Until recently Lynne was a Primary Teacher but has started her own business, CalEli Gifts. Favorite shop: With my Mummy hat on it would be The Range. They have a fantastic selection of arts and crafts materials and a huge selection of toys. Favourite park: – Fairmile Park. It’s within walking distance to our house and is clean and safe. It also has a football pitch which is vital when you have football mad sons!

Favourite day out: We all love East Links Family Park. There is something for everyone there. It has been lovely to see all the changes over the years. The café is also great! Favourite child friendly restaurant: – This might surprise people but Frankenstein Pub, George 1V Bridge is excellent for kids. They have a dedicated menu for under 12s and an activity sheet to keep them busy. There is always so much for them to watch too. Proudest eco-friendly moment: – We started growing our own vegetables this year which we have all really enjoyed. It has encouraged the boys to try new vegetables and it has been lovely being able to pass on our homemade produce to our family members No parent should be without: – Even though my boys are older now hankies and snacks are still a necessity. I used to always carry a pot of playdough with me for keeping the kids entertained until it was confiscated at Chicago airport – I was told it was a banned item!

Parenting pet hates: – Having to watch those dreadful kids programmes on TV, when the kids were younger, that had people dressed up in costumes that didn’t speak! Parenting high points (what makes it all worthwhile): – Would it be corny if I say that every day is worthwhile! The cuddles, the family holidays, having a joke but knowing when to stop makes it all rewarding. Most embarrassing moment (with child): – Sitting in a quiet coffee shop in Morningside one Sunday morning when my younger son did the loudest burp! Everyone stopped and looked at us. Thankfully most people laughed. Funniest comment (from child): – I was told by my son’s nursery teacher that the class had been asked to share jokes with each other. He had proceeded to tell everyone “What’s the difference between snowmen and snowwomen?” He then told them the answer. I’m sure you can work it out! Thankfully the 3 and 4 year olds didn’t understand. The staff did and thought it was hilarious! Favourite family holiday spot: – Tenerife. We go there every October for a bit of sun and to recharge the batteries after a busy term. There is so much to do and everyone is really friendly. Best children’s book: – When the boys were younger, Julia Donaldson’s “Charlie Cooks favourite book” was our favourite. Now they are older, I love reading David Walliams and Anthony Horowitz books with them. Best DVD: – Spykids – one that we can all watch together. Most played with toys: – It has to be a football! Monopoly and Frustration are also very popular family games that we all like to play. Most successful recipe/food: – Spaghetti Bolognese. Help! My child needs glasses for the first time. Receiving the news for the first time that that your child needs glasses can often be shocking and might even raise some self-doubt as a parent Is it something I’ve done? Did I miss something? Could I have detected it earlier? Probably not. If your eyesight is good it’s pretty much impossible to imagine what someone else can (or can’t!) see. To try and make parenting life a little easier, below are a few tips to get you through the first time glasses selection: Looking good Your child should chose the new frame. When a child picks their own frame it helps them take pride in their ownership. Trained practice staff should assist by providing several suitable choices. Both parents and staff should be supportive and compliment the child by telling them how great they look in their new glasses. This helps boost the child’s self-confidence. A Great Fit - To ensure success in getting your child to wear glasses it is important that you purchase the glasses from someone who is experienced in fitting young children. Often the fit isn’t right first time, trained staff should be more than happy to adjust them as the fit needs to be perfect around the nose and earpieces not only for comfort but to ensure they are looking through the optimum part of the lens. Additionally adjustable curved earpieces or a strap can be supplied should it be required. Cost, Repairs and Damages - Parents should consider price when choosing the new glasses, young children frequently loose or break glasses. The NHS does support financially for most repairs/ damages. However it is worth considering a (free at Downes Opticians) second pair or decide to pay a little more for better durability. Believe me it is worth the extra cost if only to alleviate the inconvenience of being without glasses or the additional trips to the Opticians.
If after several days your child is still having difficulty adjusting to wearing their new glasses try and determine why. If it is a comfort issue this is very easily resolved with a simple adjustment. There are other potential possibilities to consider so you should raise concerns with your Optometrist. As an experienced Optometrist with a special interest in children I always initially spend time with each parent and then reassure them that they can contact me at any time to ask even the silliest of questions. A Practice pair – Wearing sunglasses or toy ‘dress up’ glasses can help your child get a feel for wearing glasses before actually doing so (please do not let them try on other children’s or grown-ups glasses).
TIPS for our younger patients that wear glasses
Adjustment time – once the prescription glasses are ready, if your child is reluctant to wear the glasses or is finding the experience of the newly corrected vision difficult, then start with short increments of wear and increase gradually. Be patient this may take a few days.

Keep your glasses in a special place when you’re not wearing them so that you don’t lose them.
•
Keep them safe from younger children and pets.
•
Carry a glasses case so that you can protect them from being damaged.
•
Clean your glasses every day.
•
Look after your eyes and have them checked regularly. If you have any problems always tell your mum or dad, they can then take you to the optician if needed.
Encourage your child to wear their new glasses and praise them for doing so, until they get into the regular routine of wearing them. Special time – Have your child look at a book with you, watch TV or participate in a close up activity to help them appreciate the importance of wearing their new glasses. Generally once a child notices that the glasses help them see better they will wear them without complaint.

Healthy Happy Lunch Boxes After a nice break from the school routine over Christmas it’s time to embark on another term, and another round (in the seemingly never-ending game) of packed lunch making. Food, in it’s many processed incarnations, is affecting our children’s health and behaviour. I can’t imagine how I’d be acting after 9 cubes of sugar but that’s what’s said to be hidden in some of the cartons of juice drinks our children might have. That’s a lot of sugar for an adult that’s a mammoth amount for a small person! To attempt to get my youngest to eat more healthily I have hidden whizzed up veg in pasta/pizza sauces, I have made up stories about vegetables (…the continuing adventures of Brian, the bionic broccoli and Pete, the most powerful pea in the land…), I have taken her to the allotment and we have grown things from seed. None of these things make her love her 5- a day despite many a patronising article telling me they will. They mostly make her suspicious of me. Me: I’ve made muffins Her: ooh - can I have….(hand hovering over said muffin)..wait… (eyes narrow) you’ve put sweet potato in it, haven’t you? (drops muffin). So, I’m not going to tell you to carve faces into your child’s lunchbox crudités…(although now I come to think about it I might just try it!). All these things can help improve your child’s attention, behaviour and learning. PROTEIN Protein rich sandwich fillings such as Egg, hummus, guacamole or cheese. CARBOHYDRATES Complex carbohydrates (wholemeal bread, pasta, banana or rice) release calories slowly and help to keep up energy levels and concentration. In contrast, refined carbohydrates (as in white bread, biscuits or cakes) provide instant, short-lived energy. CALCIUM Children under the age of five shouldn’t have a lowfat diet, so choose whole-milk products such as Greek-style yoghurt. Cheese, yoghurt, fromage frais, yoghurt drinks, smoothies and milkshakes are all excellent sources of calcium FRUIT AND VEGETABLES Health experts recommend that we include five portions of fruit and vegetables in our diet every day. Buying organic fruit and vegetables will help reduce the risk of consuming pesticides unintentionally.
Here are some to avoid: Cereal bars: many cereal bars contain more than 40 per cent sugar and 30 per cent fat. Savoury snacks: often highly processed and may contain high levels of saturated fat and salt. ‘Real fruit’ snacks: saying a product is made with ‘real fruit’ gives it a healthy spin. But take a closer look at the label and you may find that they contain as much as a whopping 63 per cent sugar! Fruit juice ‘drinks’: pure fruit juice contains 100 per cent fruit juice as you would expect. However a ‘fruit juice drink’ can contain as little as 6 percent juice. Work/Life Balance in 2017… Going into my 9th year of writing an article for the New Year edition of the Families magazine, I find myself reflecting on the challenges parents have faced in the workplace over this period and what may lie ahead in 2017. Life as a working parent is a juggling act and getting the best outcome for all can be challenging (and in some cases practically impossible) but knowing what will work for you and your family is the first step to success. Having been in the recruitment sector for 20 years now (started young!) and career coaching in my own business since 2008, I have worked with many businesses and people all trying to achieve a win-win who in the process have created some very innovative solutions. Win-win is undoubtedly the key to success and sometimes taking a step back means solutions becomes clearer, for example: Is working from home a better option for your family life and if so does that also include working flexible hours? •
If that is the case, what impact will this flexibility have on the business?

Can it be advantageous for both?

In some cases it can mean the business can offer a more flexible service to their customers.
In our age of social media there is so much information to be processed it is very easy to become a small fish in a very large pond so making yourself known to the people and organisations that you think will influence your career will be key to your success. Finally, invest in yourself. The most successful people that I work with spend time on themselves. A luxury I know when you have a young family, however essential to be the best “you” that you can be for you and your family. This can involve working with a specialist coach but may simply be as little as 1-2 hours a week reading, keeping a journal, planning and identifying behavioural patterns that you can change which will impact your desired outcomes. Women Returning to Work Looking to return in 2017? 2017 promises to be a year of opportunities for women returners. Yet for most women, the questions are how to get started and where to find some help? The PCT Partnership has been working with women returners for the last 20 years and has a vast knowledge of the issues experienced by women coming back to work after a break. “In our experience most women want work that fits with their domestic responsibilities. Often, this is part time. Whilst women appreciate that they are very capable of more, they are choosing – in the short term at least – to work shorter hours. They may then build their way back into employment and perhaps work more hours as their children get older”. Where these women may have been away from work for several years, they often describe themselves as lacking confidence and being unsure of where they fit in the world of work. The PCT Partnership offers a comprehensive approach to women looking to return to the workplace. With funding from Skills Development Scotland (SDS), courses throughout the year specifically for women returners. Working with a group of likeminded women looking to return to work, the course helps women build confidence over a few weeks of taught classroom sessions. They identify their skills, develop their CVs, receive guidance and support on how to analyse jobs and write matching applications and supporting statements. Thorough preparation for interview takes place, as does 1-1 practice, before the actual interview. The course runs 3 mornings a week and over a 4/5 week period which takes full account of school holidays etc. When the taught aspect of the course finishes, PCT continues to work with women to prepare them for interviews, including preparation for standard and competence-based questioning.
Nicole attended a course in 2016 “I was looking to return to work after 10 years at home with my kids. I was not sure of what jobs to apply for, how to structure my application and CV, and what skills were still applicable after being away from work for so long. The course was well-structured and allowed me to identify my skills, tailor my CV to the jobs I wanted to apply for and prepare me for the interview process.” Nicole is now happily employed in a flexible working environment which complements family life. As the course is supported by SDS, there is often no fee to participants. Essentially, this means free training for women who are serious about returning to the workplace.

Be present
If you're planning a big party - then get the venue and activity booked as soon as possible - 6 months in advance is not unheard of and it means that you have absolute choice. Leave it to the last minute and venue could be a problem, or you might not get the entertainment of your choice. I know it's easier said than done but try be organised - in the end it’ll be a lot less stressful!
Don't try and be all things to all people - be organised with the food and the party bags and book someone to entertain the children and then be present. Be there for your child and their friends. It is honestly possible to enjoy your child's birthday party. If the food is ready, and the party bags good to go then you can sit back and watch your little one enjoy their special day. Yes, if you like offer tea and coffee to parents during food - it's not expected but always appreciated.

The perfectly planned day (my top tips followed!) this is going to be the most wonderful day ever for your child… But there is quite a high chance your child will at some juncture burst into tears, have a tantrum, sulk at their party - and possibly all 3 - it really does sometimes all get too much for them - they're only little.

Be Bold
Be Frugal When it comes to food, don't over do it. 4/5 food items per child is masses. Buffet style works quite well, or you could make up little food boxes with names on them, then anything that they don't eat can go home with them. Ideas - Satsuma, small apple, small banana, sultanas, few strawberries/grapes, snack bar, oatcakes, cube of cheese, popcorn. I personally wouldn't bother with sandwiches.
Ok, this one’s controversial but give it a shot - ban birthday presents. You'll be surprised how easy it is, a gentle message on the birthday invite saying 'no presents please’. If you wish you can list your favourite charity as an option. Your child won't mind - explain that they'll get plenty of other presents from family and friends and their party is about getting all their friends together for some fun. You'll also be a very popular parent as you've just given 25 other parents one less thing to worry about!
Bring in the clowns Well maybe not just clowns, but book entertainment you know your little one is going to love. If your child can't sit still for more than 5 minutes then entertainment that involves sitting and listening might not be for them, something more active might be better - do your research, ask questions. It is possible to do it yourself but a lot more relaxing to outsource. You've got enough to do!

February 13 - 16 Seabird Holiday Club Following a successful launch in October, the Seabird Holiday Club is back at the Scottish Seabird Centre, North Berwick, this February. Open to school pupils from P1 to P7, the Holiday Club is £100 per child. There is a 10% discount for additional siblings and Seabird Members. The activity timetable has been compiled by Education Officer, Andrew Grieveson, featuring a range of indoor and outdoor activities including beachcombing, bug handling, citizen science surveys, rockpooling, outdoor survival skills and fossil hunting. “Our experience shows that children love getting out into the great outdoors and being taught to engage with nature in a respectful way. They are learning without even realising! Discover how a lens can make everything look differently with the Scottish Storytelling Centre! Join a storyteller and scientists to find out how a lens makes you see everything differently! Robert Hooke discovered that a glass lens could help you to see a fascinating world of hidden detail. People were horrified to find that the fleas living happily on them had ghoulish faces and hairy legs, and were fascinated by how everyday things like flowers and feathers had so much beautiful detail. A fun mix of stories and discovery presented by the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell Biology at the Scottish Storytelling Centre at 11.00am. Suitable for ages 5 - 8 years old.
