welcome to families I’ve just bought one of those fill-it-yourself advent calendars. It’s all part of my ‘Be Prepared for Christmas’ campaign, though I’m now wondering whether it will simply add to my ‘to do’ list. I like the notion of getting rid of the daily dose of poor quality chocolate dispensed from a cardboard Ben10/Hello Kitty calendar (bought on November 30th because there was nothing Christmassy left). However, I fear the reality might be a daily dose of slightly better chocolate being dispensed from a feltpocketed Santa. I am hoping to be a bit more organised this year. As a last-minute sort of person I used to scorn the people who had everything bought and wrapped by the time the kids are back at school in September. Nowadays though I admit to feeling a bit envious. Maybe they’re the families who actually enjoy the run-up to Christmas rather than curse their way through the first two weeks in December as I usually do. This year when friends ask ‘are you ready?’ in an attempt to brag about their own ultra-organised lives, I shall be. I think I’d better start making a list... Editor of Families VOY

The Mount Junior School and the York Press are holding their annual Art Competition and Exhibition for York pre-schoolers. Artists are invited to create using the inspiration from ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The competition is open to 2-4 year-olds from all local Pre-Schools, Nurseries and Childcarers. Entries will be on display for the public at The Mount Junior School from 27 Jan - 7 Feb with judging on Friday 1 February. “The art competition for pre-schoolers was so popular last year that we are very happy for it to become an annual event,” said Rachel Capper, Head of The Mount School. “I hope children will be inspired by the Stick Man story and will enjoy creating their works of art and coming with their families to see their work on display here.” Any creative art form can be entered, other than photography or video, and all winning entries will have the prize of free art supplies, compliments of The Mount Junior School, and will be published in the York Press. Learn to Cook - in French Linguacook offers fabulous cookery and language workshops for children aged 5 - 17 where young chefs can have fun creating their own culinary masterpieces - and improve their language skills at the same time. Pre-school music group Singamajigs is now running a new class on Fridays in the new room at Kidzplay, Harrogate. “Our ‘Family Jigs’ classes on Friday mornings are proving really popular,” says owner Karen Allen, “and we’re getting great feedback about the new space we’re using.” Family Jigs is suitable for children aged 6 months to 3½ who can bring along parents, grandparents, nannies or carers - great for families with different aged siblings. The Jinglebellbop - Christmas Panto Party back for its third year!
Sunday 15th December sees a fantastic Christmas show roll into Tadcaster. The Jinglebellbop will take place at the Riley Smith Hall between 1.30-3.30, less than 15 miles form York, Selby, Harrogate and Leeds. With an audience of over 200 last year and some great feedback, Santa will be back with his helpers to enjoy another Very Merry Christmas Panto Party. Against Bullying
National Anti-Bullying Week takes place 1822 November this year, with the theme ‘The Future is Ours: Safe, Fun and Connected.’ As always, the Anti-Bullying Week website is packed with resources for schools, parents and children, plus online workshops, practical resources and short films on how to survive bullying. You can also join the Anti-Bullying Roadshow which tours schools, youth clubs and parents groups throughout the UK during November. Powerful, fun and exciting, the Roadshow includes music, science, strategies and up-to-date research and information on bullying. Author flies in to Harrogate School Pupils at independent prep school Belmont Grosvenor had a close encounter of a different kind when they came face-to-face with a human-sized housefly – aka author Mike Barfield – who dropped by to share his latest book with pupils. The Boroughbridge-based author spent a day with pupils at Belmont Grosvenor School as part of their celebration of national Book Week. Armed with a pink ukulele, giant fly swats, fluffy toys and a venus fly-trap plant, Mr Barfield entertained youngsters from years 3 to 6 at the co-educational school, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, near Harrogate. SWAT – Mike’s latest book – tells the story of a just-hatched housefly called Buzzter and is packed full of scientific facts and information, as well as fun! The author was inspired to write his book by his son who, he said, was obsessed by a Venus Fly Trap plant. “It got me thinking about all the things that eat flies. As well as being great entertainment, Swat is also full of lots of science stuff,” said Mike. “I have been very impressed by all the pupils here at Belmont Grosvenor – they really seem to know their science and were great at answering all my questions.” Sophie Johnston, Head of English at Belmont Grosvenor School, said Mr Barfield’s visit had been a great success. “The show was fantastic, it had information in bucket-fulls, great jokes and wacky costumes. Yorkshire cricketer Ryan Sidebottom has launched an academy for young cricketers in York. Families has been along to ask the dad of two how the academy will work and why he’s excited to move into coaching the next generation. You’re still playing county cricket for Yorkshire. Why launch your academy now?
Debbie Feeney owns and run Swimtime North Yorkshire. We asked her why swimming is important to her. “I am passionate about teaching children and adults of all ages and abilities to swim and be safe in the water whilst also making it fun and exciting,” says Debbie. “My fiancé and I both have ‘watery’ backgrounds, so really understand the importance of being able to swim. Ray, my fiancé, is an Oceanographer and understands the significant dangers that water can present and I have a background in Engineering and Commercial Diving so have spent a fair few years under the water experiencing first-hand the dangers and hazards that a ‘watery’ environment presents. Debbie also spent many years as a competitive swimmer when in her younger years: “I know the importance of not only being able to swim,” she adds, “but of having good technique and stamina.” Debbie & Ray’s lives changed in April 2012 when the opportunity came up to buy Swimtime North Yorkshire. “I handed in my notice on my 16 year career to be able to follow a true passion. We’ve never looked back and have grown from under 100 children using one pool to over 500 children using 5 pools each week.” “We can’t provide the best service we do without a wonderful ‘pool’ of teaching staff. Whilst I teach several days, we have currently have six other extremely experienced and talented teachers working with us to complete the team. All our teachers hold the same passion, drive and determination that we do. Swimtime has just secured the pool at York Marriott Hotel with lessons running through the week and on weekends. During the winter months I get asked to do a lot of coaching sessions in schools, but I don’t have the time to commit to as many as I’d like. This is my 17th season with Yorkshire so I’ve probably got 2 or 3 more years left playing for at county level and I’d like to move into coaching afterwards. I thought I’d start taking my coaching badges now and launch the academies so I can give something back to the game that’s given so much to me. My Dad Arnie has been a coach for 15 years so I’m looking forward to working with him and with lots of keen kids who want to reach their potential.
Who is the Ryan Sidebottom Cricket Academy aimed at?
I want to see children who love their cricket, but I also want to see youngsters who have watched it on TV and feel like giving it a go. There isn’t a lot of sport in primary schools so I hope my academy will give children a place where they can try cricket. That’s how it started for me. I went to the local cricket club in Huddersfield with my mates and absolutely loved it. The rest is history! I want to work with any child that takes cricket seriously and has the desire to be as good as they can be.
What will happen at the sessions?
There’s a 90 minute session for 8-11 year olds followed by one for 11-15 year olds. This coaching programme has a long-term goal – we want to get the kids at 8 and keep them until they’re 16, improving year on year. We’ll be teaching technique, skills, working on fitness and giving them some mental training. We’re going to look at all areas of the game – batting, bowling, fielding with lots of game play. I can take 32 players per session and we’ll have 5 coaches so that’s a great player to coach ratio. There will be visits from other Yorkshire players. Johnny Bairstow will do work on wicket keeping. Jack Brookes and Liam Plunkett will come and do specialist bowling sessions. I want to get around all the kids and work with them. At the end of the day, that’s what people are signing up to. It’s my name on the door of the academy and I want to make sure that I help all the kids that come along.
What do you think it means to the children to have you coach them? I remember when I was young, meeting the likes of Darren Gough and Craig White. You couldn’t take the smile off my face. It was the joy of them speaking to me, and I couldn’t wait to learn from them. They inspired me and helped me fall in love with the sport which is the most important thing in my book. You don’t have to be the best cricketer but if you enjoy it, and want to improve then you can achieve anything.
Are you enjoying it?
The first session was daunting. Playing cricket is second nature to me but when I did my first academy session I was a nervous wreck! But I love the coaching and working with children means you get a lot back. They want to learn and they look up to me. Success for me would be to see kids come along and develop a love of the game. And if some of those kids go on to get county honours, then I’d be absolutely delighted. Buddy World
Buddy World is the brainchild of local dad Paul Woodward, who has worked for many years as an artist, designer and teacher. “It’s result of over 15 years of work,” Paul says, “going back to when I used to read stories to my children at bedtime. I was often disappointed with the books available - they rarely captivated the reader and, so in turn, failed to captivate the listener.” With this in mind Paul set out to write and illustrate a book for his children, one that would be colourful, humorous and fun to share with them. Buddy World was born with just one story about Pepe Pig; a wannabe movie star and a lovable dreamer. Over the following years Paul wrote many more books, creating numerous colourful characters to join in his stories and Buddy World grew into an imaginary world populated by his creations. “As technology advanced and the internet became ever faster, I decided to develop Buddy World into an interactive web experience that could be enjoyed by anyone with access to the internet, be it through a PC or games console. York’s magical festive experience – Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland - will return to York Designer Outlet this November with ice skating at The Ice Factor, a new-look après-skate Café & Bar, a traditional funfair and of course Christmas shopping at the Outlet. - As the temperature has dropped and winter is approaching, I have seen more and more children with coughs and cold. One of the other conditions that increases in the winter months is glue ear. This is a really common condition where the middle ear becomes filled with fluid.
First a quick anatomy lesson on ears. The ear is made up of the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. The outer ear is the outside ear you see (called the pinna) and the canal. At the base of the canal is the eardrum – or tympanic membrane. Under this is the middle ear where the smallest bones in the body (the ossicles – a great trivia question) transmit sound to the inner ear. The inner ear is where sounds transmit to the brain and where you also have the equipment to keep your body balanced. The middle ear has an important narrow tube which connects to the back of the throat called the Eustachian tube. This opens when we swallow, chew or yawn, allowing fluid to drain as the middle ear is usually filled with air. In glue ear it can become filled

with fluid. This means that the tiny bones cannot transmit sound properly, so hearing is muffled and reduced. The most common cause is blockage of the Eustacian tube with mucus, for example in viral infections. Glue ear is very common. It is more common in children whose parents smoke, who were bottle fed or who have a sibling with glue ear. It is rare in children who are older than 7 or 8yrs, as the Eustachian tube widens with age.
SYMPTOMS Children with glue ear can have dulled hearing and so you may notice they say ‘pardon’ or ‘what’ more often, or need the TV turned up louder. If the reduction in hearing is not noticed, this can lead to issues at school. Not hearing the teacher can lead to frustration, behavioural issues and falling behind in the classroom. There can be speech and language issues. Studies have shown that there is unlikely to be developmental delay in most children with glue ear, but always see your doctor if you have any concerns. There may be pain but this is mild. Small children may pull at their ear. The pain can dramatically increase if the gluey secretions become infected. Glue ear usually gets better by itself. Half will be better after three months and the vast majority will be better within a year. To diagnose glue ear, it is advisable to see your doctor. They can look at the ear drum and organize hearing tests to find out how bad the hearing loss is. Children may then be referred to ear, nose and throat specialists (ENT) if it’s not getting better by itself.
TREATMENT The ENT specialists have a number of options available. They may advise no action for the first 3 months to see if symptoms get better by themselves. Balloon treatment may be offered where a special balloon is blown up by the child blowing through their nose. This is called auto-inflation. It puts back pressure into the nose, and may help to open up the Eustachian tube and allow better drainage of the fluid. The child needs to do this regularly until the fluid clears. The research studies that looked into this treatment found that it seems to help in some cases, but not all. If the glue ear is severe, or not getting better by other means, grommets may be inserted. The child is put off to sleep, a tiny cut is made in the ear drum to allow fluid to drain out, and then the tiny tube called a grommet is inserted. They usually stay in for approximately 12 months and fall out as the ear grows. They sometimes have to be re-inserted. If the child has lots of colds, the adenoids may be removed as they are small clumps of tissue near the Eustachian tube that may contribute to its blockage. Unfortunately there is no evidence to show decongestants, antibiotics, steroid and other medications work. Hearing aids are another option as a short term measure while waiting for the glue ear to go away by itself. Your child may needs lots of patience and understanding. Having muffled hearing can be incredibly frustrating. Speaking clearly, looking at the child in the face, and cutting out background noise can help. Keeping the school informed is also very important so they can be understanding too.

-How to help your child cope
Sadly, in spite of lots of publicity and much greater awareness of the problem, (especially in schools), bullying is on the increase. Wendy Bollen has worked as a counselling psychologist in schools with many hundreds of children and young people and by far the most common problem is being bullied. She has written an e-book with advice on how deal with the problem in a different way. This November anti-bullying week is being held from 19- 23 and whilst it is great to raise awareness about the problem, what children really need is practical help and advice on how to deal with bullies. Wendy has done a lot of research into the causes and effects of bullying and delivers training to schools on the most effective ways to tackle this problem. She realised that the advice usually given by teachers didn’t work. Pupils are often told to ignore unkind comments, but that often leads to increased attempts by bullies to upset their victim. Based on her own experiences and those of the young people she works with Wendy has come up with a rather different approach which empowers pupils by teaching them how to stand up to a bully. “Most children don’t want to involve a teacher, but they do want to do something. I teach kids strategies to help them stand up for themselves by using assertive body language and practicing smart replies. If you can show a bully that you really don’t care that they’ve said something horrid and even better, say something funny back to them it takes the wind out of their sails.”, explains Wendy. Here are Wendy’s top five tips on how to deal with bullies: • Look confident-stand up straight and look them in the eye if they say something to you. If you look scared a bully is much more likely to pick on you. • Stay calm and practice slow breathing. If you feel less anxious you’ll look more confident. • Even if you feel upset, don’t show it until you are out of sight. Bullies enjoy seeing their victims upset, so by letting them see you upset you are rewarding them and they are likely to continue. • Likewise don’t let them see you’re angry- the aim is to show bullies that you’re really not bothered by what they say.
• Use humour- a witty retort is unexpected and shows bullies that you are confident and don’t care what they say to you. In fact, you think it’s funny. Standing up to bullies is important says Wendy, especially with a smart retort. “An example would be to say, “ I’m flattered that you spend so much of your time thinking about me!” or “I’m sorry, I’m busy right now, can I ignore you later?” Wendy stresses that how you say it is just as important as what you say. “Stand straight, look them straight in the eye, say it clearly with a smile and then quickly walk away. Don’t hang around waiting for them to say something else.” She also emphasises that there are some things to avoid saying. “Never say anything about someone’s Mum! This is likely to escalate the situation.” Based on her work with pupils, Wendy has written a self-help book for youngsters on how to beat the bullies. The Little Book Of Retorts is set out in sections, which include information on the reasons behind bullying, why people become victims and techniques for dealing with fear and anxiety. Importantly Wendy emphasises that children don’t have to have experienced bullying in order to benefit from the book. “Prevention is far better than cure and if children appear confident and untroubled by insults they are unlikely to become a victim.” The book is suitable for kids aged from ten up to sixteen and is ideal for children starting secondary school this autumn. How to help your child overcome their shyness Christmas parties and family gettogethers at this time of the year can spell a worrying time if your child is shy. Take Holly’s experience with her 6 year old son, Thomas, “Thomas is a lovely little boy but when he met anyone he hadn’t met before he was unable to speak, he lost all his manners and just looked at the floor.” This is not unusual. Shyness is a perfectly normal trait in childhood, but when lives become restricted by shyness, we must take action as there is no question that shyness robs us of opportunities that other people take for granted. The good news is that there are a lot of practical things that can gently encourage a shy child to be more outgoing.
Mixing in society Start by inviting one friend over for half an hour at home, then moving to more friends, more time and then outside the home. Children learn social skills from watching others so model the kind of interactions you want to encourage: be warm and friendly with people you don’t know, introduce yourself to new people, ask people for help, and compliment friends.
Drama queens (& kings) Shyness doesn’t necessarily mean low self-esteem; it usually comes from fear or feeling worried about what other people think. Simple acting techniques from drama classes soon equip children with the ability express themselves more clearly in front of others. Equally, presenting ourselves in a confident manner by sitting up straight
and making eye-contact, even when we don’t feel like it, will make any child feel bolder because of the positive way others will react to them.
Facing up to it Perhaps the most effective way to help your child to be less shy is to talk openly with them about it. Refer to situations that are daunting and empathise “sometimes I feel worried about speaking up at work, but I always make and effort and feel good afterwards”. Holly added that she “used to read books to Thomas that had themes of facing fears or overcoming challenges”.
Dress Rehearsal Watch what situations trigger shyness in your child then role play them later at home, giving hints on how they can feel more courageous when next out in public. “Thomas always felt nervous going to birthday parties, so we decided to set up a party scene at home, using his favourite toys and acted out the different scenarios: giving the party boy their present; saying hello to other children; asking the adult where the toilet is; saying thank you on leaving. It worked a treat”, said Holly. A karaoke machine or sing along DVD will encourage your child to be more adventurous with their speech and movement. Record them pretending to be a news reader, or presenter interviewing their ‘celebrity’ friend.
Lights, camera, action Trying new activities in a gradual way helps overcome shyness. Holly had always
been encouraging Thomas to try out new things, “I knew Thomas had achieved an improved level of outgoingness when in the end-of-term football lesson, Thomas waited 30 minutes for his turn to kick a ball through the cones and straight into the goal - in front of everyone. He has really come out of his shell.”
Taking trays of nibbles round guests, being photographer at a family occasion, going into a shop and asking for the price are all great ways to take their mind off their shyness. But don’t force them into doing things that make them uncomfortable, play to their strengths. Your child’s shyness will vanish if he is encouraged to get better at things he already excels at. Our attitude is crucial We all want our children to outgrow their shyness and latest research indicates that how parents respond to shyness is what makes the difference. Labelling our child as ‘shy’ would certainly be discouraged; they often turn into self fulfilling prophecies. In the same sense, we should always avoid dismissing any feelings of shyness e.g. “don’t be silly, big boys don’t get shy”. Comments like this lead children to feel that their worries are not valid, leading to anxiety. Be supportive by combining empathy with confident assertions, “Ahh, I can see you’re feeling a bit worried, but I’m really confident you’ll be able to handle it”.

There’s magic in the air at Stockeld Park again this Christmas with the return of the Christmas at Hogwarts weekend on November 16th & 17th. A must for all Harry Potter fans, the weekend of wizardry promises to leave you spellbound as you try your hand at broomstick training and meet Harry and Hagrid for an enchanting show in the forest. Once you’ve been allocated your house by the Sorting Hat you’ll be able to see live owls, plant magic beans and enjoy tribute acts throughout the weekend. The Christmas fun will also feature two special charity events for Martin House Hospice, including a Guinness Book of World Record attempt on Saturday 9th November, when the park hopes to set a new world record for the largest gathering of Santa’s elves. Stockeld’s Santa Dash will take place on Dec 1st. “Over the past few years, the Christmas Adventures has become one of the most anticipated family seasonal festivities in the region,� says Amy Thornton, General Manager at Stockeld Park, “and this year it’s set to be bigger and better than ever before.� New for 2013 Stockeld Park has launched a two day Yorkshire Gift fair which will showcase local products, crafts and gifts, and provide visitors with perfect gift ideas just in time for Christmas. The event will be held on 22nd & 23rd November 12.30 – 18.00 and is free to enter. The fantastic Make a Wish Entertainment team return to Stockeld Park to perform the pantomime Cinderella on Sunday 24th November. Set in the park’s marquee this pantomime promises to be a great family show and is guaranteed to get visitors in the festive spirit. As always, throughout Christmas the four Adventure Zones will feature a variety of activities, including the only artificial Nordic ski trail in the UK, an outdoor skating rink, illuminated Yew tree maze, plus a giant witch’s hat and T-pot slide - both designed and built by the park’s in-house team of artists and technicians. I can - just about - remember life in the BC years No, not actually Before Christ, although the valleys of frown lines in my forehead might suggest otherwise. But I vaguely remember a time, long, long ago, when I wasn’t a laughing stock. When my armpits were always silkily hairfree, when my twinkly toenails were neatly painted in perky shades and when I trotted off to my office, every bit the consummate career girl. It was a time, my friends, Before Children. A friend of mine is an accomplished female firefighter – a rare and impressive breed. But her son almost scuppered her career before it even started. My friend – we’ll call her H – had married a firefighter, and after much thought, decided to join him in the service. Even today, there are few women in the job and back then they were as rare as hen’s teeth. But H had passed the rigorous selection process and been offered a place – in fact, she was to start the very next week. Her son - barely two years old - somehow managed to lock her, from the outside, in the toilet. ‘Darling, open the door.’ ‘Can’t, Mummy. No key.’ ‘Darling, where’s the key?’ (Proudly), ‘In mine pants.’ OK, can you get the key out of your pants and open the door.’ Pause for much rummaging. ‘Mummy? Can’t find key.’ H’s mother was at work 20 miles away and her husband was at work – obviously at the fire station. ‘Darling, can you run and get the phone? And remember to come straight back with it!’
She heard the trotting off of little feet and then, thankfully, their return. ‘Phone, Mummy!’ ‘Good boy. Can you remember the number you dial to call if there’s an emergency? Yes, clever boy, that’s it! Find the 9 and press the 9. Yes, now do that again, and again. Ask the nice lady for the fire brigade and then tell them your daddy is a fireman and is at the fire station.’ Brilliant, thought H. Such an easy number and her son could simply relay a message for Daddy to nip home and let Mummy out of the toilet. ‘Yes, mine Mummy is stuck in the toilet. Yes… MUMMY! Are you OK? Yes, mine Mummy is talking and is OK.’ ‘Darling – tell her Mummy is FINE and that Daddy is a firefighter and is at work on Blue Watch.’ ‘Mine Daddy is a firefighter. The keys are in mine pants… Don’t worry Mummy. The lady says don’t worry.’ Suddenly, emerging from the distance, H heard a horrifying and familiar sound – the WOO WOO WOO WOO of the fire engine siren. Peering out of the window, she watched the wagon screech to a halt outside and her husband jump hurriedly from the driver’s seat. He and his colleagues stared up at the toilet window, from which she was looking, smiling apologetically. They sniggered and waved – all except her husband, who shot her a murderous look, thundered up the stairs and TRIED THE TOILET DOOR. ‘It’s locked,’ she explained helpfully.
‘Where’s the key?’ ‘In his pants.’ Thankfully, the key was swiftly recovered (it had got tangled in the elastic of his little joggers) and H was duly rescued, amid much good-humoured banter from everyone except her embarrassed husband. The following week H is at the training centre, eager and earnest and keen to make a good impression on her first day of training for her squeaky new career. She’s focussing hard and, in a room full of men, is really concentrating on being cool and professional. ‘Now,’ says the training officer, ‘Onto the shouts themselves. Unfortunately we do get some strange calls from members of the public. I’m now going to play just one of those calls, so you can get an idea of what we’re up against.’ He hits a button and echoing round the training room, H hears the piping tones of her small son, declaring: ‘Mummy’s stuck in the toilet. The key is in mine pants.’ Mortified, she feels herself turning more deeply scarlet than the fire engine that had arrived outside her house. Should she keep the professional demeanour or admit that this was actually her son? She swivels an eye to the side, to gauge reaction, without drawing attention to herself. Only to see everyone in the room turning purple with suppressed laughter, which then explodes into huge guffaws of hilarity. ‘Oh, you bunch of so and so’s!’ she yelled (or words to that effect). She was definitely now one of the lads.
