Well the school year is nearly over and for us there’s yet another round of endings and beginnings on the horizon. I’m sure to have my bag stuffed full of tissues as my oldest prepares to leave primary school - what with the end of term play, high school induction days, the leavers’ party and the leavers’ assembly, I’m sure to be emotionally wrung out by mid-July. I made the mistake of taking a sneaky look at the play script and read the words of the last song - it required a tissue. I wouldn’t want to spoil it for any fellow Y6 parents reading this but suffice it to say the sentiments about ‘moving on’ will pull at the heartstrings of all involved. Enjoy your endings this term and enjoy preparing for new beginnings. Here’s to an exciting summer of lazy days, no homework, no uniform, late nights and hopefully some sunshine.

Lulah Loves is a new online boutique based in Yorkshire selling stylish, fun and quirky children’s clothing. “I believe that what we wear reflects who we are, so why should it be different for our little ones?” says Laura Robinson founder of the company. Before having children Laura was a hairdresser, an occupation she continued until she had her second child. “It was only then I realised hairdressing no longer fitted around my family life,” says Laura. “With a very laid back 4 year old and a very lively baby something had to give! “Not long after my daughter’s (Tallulah aka Lulah) first birthday I started to get itchy feet and wanted to do something for myself. This is when ‘Lulah Loves’ was seeded! “I spent over a year researching brands both in the UK and Europe, trying to get the right overall look for my site. Tennis Tykes offer new classes for 7 and 8 year olds Tennis Tykes is extending its tennis classes to cover seven and eight year olds so that they will be available from September and over the summer for the 2-8 age range. Caroline Buncall, its founder said; “Parents of children currently on the programme and reaching the age of 7, have asked us to extend our current offering. Barnardo’s Big Toddle at The Mount Junior Twenty-six toddlers at The Mount Pre-School joined the UK’s biggest fundraising event for under-5s recently. The toddlers, who walked the perimeter of the school’s spacious playing fields, raised money and awareness for Barnardo’s, the children’s charity which runs The Big Toddle. Along the way, there were points of interest for the little ones, such as toys hanging from leafy trees. Head of The Mount Junior School, Rachel Capper, said: “The event was a great success, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of the children and their families. Our Pre-School children understand that this activity supports charity, and they are very open to those ideas and values which are a strong tradition here at The Mount Junior School. Barnardo’s is one of our charities this year.”

Forest School Bucks Trend at The Mount There is a school of thought that bemoans how modern education is increasingly demanding children learn while wrapped in cotton wool, bereft of risk and stifled by health and safety measures. York’s Mount Junior School bucks this trend with their onsite Forest School. Students start in their younger years learning to whittle using relatively blunt blades, gradually working up to being able to chop wood using axes and carve patterns using sharp blades. They also learn to light fires that will burn in wet conditions and do all of this while understanding how to recognise and manage the risks involved. Sessions move gradually from teacherdirected activities to those that are childled. Sometimes sessions are planned to support an area of curriculum that the class is exploring, but the child’s interests are the starting point, and tasks are openended. Charity Dress up day raises over £300
There were doctors, nurses, policemen, chefs, ballerinas and firefighters - even a pop star and a lifeguard - when pupils at Belmont Grosvenor School dressed up to raise cash for national charity Save the Children. Youngsters threw themselves into the charity’s ‘What I Would Like To Be 2013’ – and raised £300. As well as enjoying a day dressed to suit their future careers, youngsters from the school’s Magic Tree Nursery to Pre-Reception classes also learnt about different jobs from a number of visitors who popped into the school. A policeman, dispensing chemist, ophthalmologist and barrister visited the youngsters to talk about their work. Mrs Ann Regan, Pre-Reception Co-ordinator at Belmont Grosvenor School, said all the children had thoroughly enjoyed the dressing-up challenge. “Everyone had a fabulous time; the event has been a great success. It was a great opportunity for the children to use their language skills and take part in some great discussions,” she said. www.belmontgrosvenor.co.uk
Sports Leaders UK helps get York moving Archbishop Holgate’s School hosted an ASDA Active Sports Day for more than 300 school children from years 1 & 2 at Osbaldwick, Lord Deramore’s and Badger Hill Primary schools last month. “The pupils played a bean bag rounders festival which was part of a structured PE competition programme offered to all our feeder primary schools,” said Ruth Walker head of PE at Archbishop Holgate’s. “Throughout the year the primary pupils get used to visiting the secondary school and competing across many different activities from swimming to hockey and rugby to orienteering. It is also a great opportunity for our sports leaders to be actively involved with programme.”
Crickets for tea?
Pupils from Kirk Hammerton C of E Primary School and Staveley Community Primary School joined forces for a very special outdoor learning experience recently. Sixty-two children spent two days and one night in the great outdoors on the school fields undertaking activities such as building shelters, cooking on, and singing round a camp fire, team games and the most exciting part... erecting and sleeping in a tent. The programme was delivered by ‘Under Canvas’, a specialist company run by Sinan Osman & Ian Bell, who between them have decades of experience in outdoor education. Sinan said, “we have developed our School Camp in the School Grounds concept specifically to give primary school children who have never experienced camping or bushcraft, their first step into the great outdoors. This allows children of all ages, abilities and experience to learn outside the classroom by providing new challenges and confidence building skills.” The highlight for some was the chance to eat cricket and meal worm pancakes - just like a bush tucker challenge. In fact one pupil who was rather worried about the creepy crawlies visiting the tent at night was heard to say when asked if they had visited, ‘Yes they did but we ate them!’’

Last year Boston Spa School (pictured) held a Practice-a-thon event in March raising £251.40 for the charity. Students were sponsored for taking part in extra practise every day for 2 weeks as part of a national practice-a-thon. They then contributed to a 7 hour music marathon. Many Brits will be hopping over the Channel to France this summer, but how many families will be confident enough to speak the language whilst there? A Yorkshire mum of 3, Leanne Jefferson, wants to help change this and get children re e learning French when they are most receptive at an nc h w it h C a m early age in nursery and primary school. Leanne, a French language teacher, has developed an innovative, user-friendly programme: ‘Learning French with Camembear’ for Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. The special feature of this learning resource is Camembear- a cute, French teddy bear puppet who motivates children to speak French and interact with him. Leanne says, “The magic of ‘Learning French with Camembear’ is that he is so engaging and children love to speak with him. He is stored in ‘le sac magique’, comes out of ‘le sac’ for the French session, and then is returned to ‘le sac’ to retain the aura of magic! It’s a very simple programme to deliver, is very user friendly and has proven so with non- specialists. Vaccinations protect you from diseases that can make you ill. They are usually made up of a tiny bit of the germ that is either very weak or dead and this is injected into the body. The body responds by making antibodies that then fight the germ should you meet it again in the future. Some vaccinations need a ‘booster’ to ensure you stay immune. This way, some diseases can almost completely disappear from the community. There is a schedule of vaccination during child and adulthood that has been developed and is available to all on the NHS. This can be found on the NHS website, www.nhs. net, where there is a comprehensive list of what is usually given when. Your GPs and practice nurses can answer any specific queries you may have. The rotavirus vaccination is new and due to be introduced in July 2013. Rotavirus infection is a common cause of diarrhoea is babies and children. It causes fever, abdominal cramps, sickness and diarrhoea and over 90% of children will get it at some stage as it is incredibly infectious. It is therefore great news that a vaccination has been developed which will be offered at the 2 month and 3 month baby immunisations. The chicken pox vaccination prevents you from getting chicken pox if you have not already had it and involves two doses of the vaccine, four to eight weeks apart. The vaccination is not available to everyone on the NHS at the moment, although it is available privately. It is available on the NHS to anyone who is not immune to chicken pox and has close contact with others who do not have a fully functioning immune system. This is the group of people where chicken pox can be a serious illness with complications. In practice this means that healthcare workers can have the vaccination, or others such as family members or close regular contacts of those with weakened immune systems. It is worth noting that this is a vaccination that you should not have in the first 3 months of pregnancy, and should avoid pregnancy for 3 months after having it. MMR stands for measles, mumps and rubella and is a vaccination against all three given in 2 doses at 12-13 months and the 3yr pre-school booster. These are all common childhood illnesses that can have serious complications as we have heard in the news. Of note, measles starts with a runny nose, raised temperature and conjunctivitis and develops into a dry cough and blotchy rash, including inside the mouth. Complications are rare but serious. All three illnesses can result in severe pregnancy complications. In 1998, a study was published suggesting a link with the MMR vaccine and autism and also with inflammatory bowel disease. It is import to note that this evidence has been completely discredited and it has since been
proven that there is no evidence of the link to autism or inflammatory bowel disease. If your child was not vaccinated at the 12-13 month vaccination and 3yr pre-school booster, you should contact you GP practice and arrange for it to be done. Some people have gone for the single dose vaccines from private clinics. There is no evidence for this – and involves more injections so risking developing diseases while waiting for the next one as well as being more unpleasant for your child. Some people also think that the MMR vaccine cannot be given if there is an egg allergy – this is not true – it can be given. Whooping cough is a serious bacterial illness in babies that causes prolonged bouts of coughing and choking and can lead to serious complications including pneumonia and brain damage. Unfortunately babies who are too young to be vaccinated are at the greatest risk. Case numbers are significantly on the increase and so a vaccination has been developed that can be given to mothers while they are pregnant that gives immunity to the baby for after it has been born. The vaccine can be given between 28 and 38 weeks. It can be given after 38 weeks, but may not be effective. Unfortunately there have not been studies of this vaccine in pregnancy, but there is no evidence that there is a risk. A similar vaccine has been used in America with no evidence of risk to mother or baby. Finally a word on when and when not to give vaccinations. Babies commonly get coughs and colds, particularly during the winter and this can cause anxiety when it comes to having routine vaccinations. The advice is that vaccinations can be given if the illness is mild – eg runny nose without a raised temperature. If the baby/child is unwell and temperature is raised, the vaccination can be postponed, the reason being that new symptoms or worsening of symptoms can be falsely put down to being the vaccine and not the actual illness. Others worry about giving vaccine if there is contact with pregnant mums – but it is usually fine to give the vaccination. It is also usually fine when there has been a family history of allergy to a vaccine. Discuss any worries you may have with your doctor or practice nurse. It is always better to ask rather than cancelling or ignoring a vaccination. Not having a vaccine can lead to putting your child and others at risk of potentially serious infectious diseases.

Keeping up with the Touch Screen Generation Most parents will admit to handing a smart phone to their toddler for a moment’s peace in a traffic jam or supermarket queue. At home children have access to the Internet and games, either on their own phones, iPods and tablets, or those of their parents – there’s even an iPotty with an in-built iPad stand, for entertaining impatient toddlers. Without wanting to sound all Big Brother, do we really know what they are up to when they’re using these devices? Are you sure there’s no way your 5 year-old could rack up £1,700 on in-app purchases, as Bristol boy Danny Kitchen did earlier this year? Have you installed a secure browser so that your kids can’t access unsuitable content? Do you know who they’re texting or emailing, or who’s contacting them? If, like me, you grew up in the 80s, your ‘screentime’ as a child would have been limited to afterschool Blue Peter watching and maybe the odd half hour playing Donkey Kong on your Game and Watch. There was no Internet or Facebook to police, so our parents had control over what we were watching or playing, without any unwelcome outside influences. Fast-forward to today, where the average UK home has five screens a child can access, including TVs, computers, tablets and phones, as well as Wi-Fi available pretty much everywhere. You can see why parents are flummoxed by how best to teach their kids to navigate this technology, when it’s available 24-7. Clearly, the best way to make sure you know what your children are up to is to be there when they’re playing, and take an interest in what they’re looking at. This becomes less possible as your children get older, and don’t want their parents following them around like the technology police.

There are some pretty basic security steps we can follow which enable older kids to have relative freedom, in a safe virtual environment. 1. Check that Internet browsers are child safe. The iPad doesn’t come with parental controls, so disable Safari in Restrictions and download a new safe browser (there are several available in the App Store that offer parental controls). Filter content according to a child’s age or enter specific categories and URLs for personalised site blocking. On Android devices you can have multiple users, tailoring access appropriately – in Google Play, press Menu and select Settings, then enable Content Filtering. The Ranger Pro Safe Browser app enables you to monitor and manage your children’s Internet use. 2. Keep your passwords to yourself, turn off in-app purchasing, and limit children’s access to apps. If you are an iPad/iPhone/iPod user, keep your iTunes password safe. Then stop anyone else from using the App Store. Go to the Settings menu, tap on General, then Restrictions. Enable Restrictions and choose a PIN (not the same one used to unlock the device). Go to the Allowed Content section, and either turn In-App Purchases off completely or change the Require Password option to “Immediately” rather than “15 minutes”. The PIN will ensure that only you can change these settings in the future. In Settings you can also turn off Game Centre (which shares data with other users), and disable social media access, Bluetooth and Location Services. Remember Airplane Mode, in Settings, effectively turns Internet access off. Children can still access movies, music games and apps and it exposes them to less radiation. The World Health Organisation has raised concerns about the levels of radiation coming from mobile phones and other wireless gadgets and they recommend limiting children’s use of such devices. The Android platform uses Sandbox Locks for younger children, which you can download to restrict access, from Toddler Lock, which makes the device show colours and shapes when tapped by chubby fingers, to apps like Flamingo Sandbox which enables you to restrict access to specific apps, lock profiles, wireless networks and system settings. App Lock is a free app that enables you to control which apps require PIN access. With all of the security jobs done, you can let your children actually enjoy using touchscreens safely! There are so many different apps out there, from learning times tables to old fashioned platform-style games, it’s hard to work out which ones are the best. Review sites can be helpful, such as kidsbestipadapps.com, which gives you a list of apps for kids, by age.

Tips for Travellers Yippee! It’s the break we’ve all been dreaming of and looking forward to through the dank winter and spring months – here comes this year’s summer holiday. Hands up who remembers when it was just you and your beloved, grabbing a cheap deal, filling a backpack at the last minute and heading for the sun? Those were the good old days... Now you’re a family, there’s a third ‘p’ to add to ‘passport and packing’ – ‘planning’. Here at Families (now a mighty group of 40 local magazines), the editors have children spanning all ages from three months to the early twenties, so you could say we’ve been there, done that. We put our heads together to pool our experience and best ideas for you. Happy travelling! • Label your child’s clothes, towels and backpacks, especially if you will be using kids’ clubs – they WILL go missing. Labels 4 Kids (www.labels4kids.com/fam) and Easy 2 Name (www.easy2name. com) both stock packs of instant labels so the job’s a breeze and it’s a much cheaper solution than replacing lost items. They also have ID wristbands so you can label the children with your contact details. Say it Personally sell Snappy Tags if you’re needle and iron averse and prefer to leave your labeling to the kids! • Use Google Street View with the children to look round your planned location and help get familiarised with the landscape, ‘foreign’ signs and local attractions. You can also use it to create a list of places to visit • Photocopy everyone’s passport and keep the copies in a different place. If the originals go missing, proof that you had passports will make it much easier to tussle with overseas authorities when it’s time to come home • Freeze food to await your return even fresh milk can be frozen - so you don’t come home to an empty kitchen. Some very organised mothers even do an online shop towards the end of their holiday, for delivery on their first day home. Now, that’s organisation!

• Have up to date pictures of your children on your phone - if they go missing you can show authorities what they look like • Lost luggage is a nightmare. Rather than filling one suitcase per person, pack a couple of daytime and evening outfits for everyone in each case so you can all get started while the hotel/airline tracks down the missing bag • Involve your children in the packing even if just a small part is their responsibility. It occupies them while you are busy and gets them into the holiday mood. Then check their choices: you may find fancy dress costumes and nothing sensible (OK, I admit this is from experience!) • Add a small ‘emergency bag’ to your hand luggage, with plasters, tissues, sachets of paracetamol, cotton wool, needle and thread, safety pins, wetwipes and a few sweets (for bribing and wiping away tears). Oh the satisfying feeling to have what you need just at the right time! • Pack spare clothes in your hand luggage in case of ‘accidents’ • Leave a spare set of keys with a friendly neighbour in case of home emergencies, losing yours or locking yourself out (I’ve done that just when we were about to leave!) • Cancel the newspapers and ask your friendly neighbour to return the wheelie bins to your property on collection day, so you’re not advertising an empty home.

• Long car journeys are not all about being plugged into gadgets. Try story tapes - as a family, we are all totally addicted to the ‘How to Train your Dragon’ series. The ‘Michelin I-Spy’ activity books are great fun, as are the free downloads from www.rac.co.uk/advice/ car-knowledge/top-ten/car-games/. I made up some sheets myself for a journey through France and they kept my boys amused for hours • For flights, Usborne’s ’50 Things do on a Plane’ will keep them occupied, rrp £5.99, while the Top Trumps range is great for older children, especially if you’re willing to join in • Flying is the one time I am relaxed about screen time - if you have electrical gadgets, use them. Make sure you have some child friendly headphones to hand so as not to ‘share’ your child’s love of Peppa Pig with the entire plane • Sucky sweets (as they are known in our house) are great for little ones who struggle with their ears on take off. Give babies a bottle (or breastfeed) to stop their ears popping • Pack an extra layer for the flight even if you’re flying from a warm UK to a tropical destination. Planes can be chilly and children won’t relax if they’re not cosy • If your child is crying on the flight, don’t panic. Most of passengers on board will be either parents or grandparents and will have sympathy for you. Your priority is settling your child in the best way you can. It may help calm them and that in turn will calm you.

Through the Magic Mirror will bring Anthony Browne’s picture book world to life as you step through the magic mirror in to the amazing world of this award-winning author and illustrator and come face-to-face with characters including Willy the Wimp. Enter into the rooms of Anthony’s family home, complete with family photographs and artefacts, as well as the artwork from ‘My Mum’ and ‘My Dad’. Then walk through the back yard from ‘Changes’, take a stroll in the park or visit the lifesize gorilla in the zoo and look at the artwork from ‘Little Beauty’. You can also explore the forest where Anthony Browne’s fairytale adaptations of ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘Me and You’, ‘Bear Hunt’ and ‘The Tunnel’ can be found. The last stop is the ‘gallery within a gallery’ where you can view the original illustrations from over 30 books spanning his career and play ‘The Shape Game’. Anthony Browne was born in Yorkshire and attended Leeds Art College and in 2009 he was named the sixth Children’s Laureate in recognition of the importance of his exceptional children’s writing in creating the ‘readers of tomorrow’. Browne has also won the Kate Greenaway Award for children’s books on several occasions and was the first British illustrator to win the prestigious Hans Christian Anderson award.

Cawood Craft Festival … Made for Families
For over 30 years, every August bank holiday, visitors have enjoyed three full days of crafts demonstrations, craft competitions, craft stalls, vintage cars, live bands, local produce and family entertainment at Cawood Craft Festival Each year, the festival takes over the whole of Cawood village, including Cawood Caravan Park. There is a free shuttle bus running between the centre of the village and the caravan park where there will be a huge range of games and activities for children of all ages. Animal lovers will be able to enjoy a dog show on the school playing field; also the venue for the Classic Car Show and Art Club exhibition. As always, the festival showcases traditional arts and artisan crafts, including clothes, bags, jewellery, woodwork, gifts, workshops, glasswork, tapestry, pictures and toys. You can also have your taste buds tickled with local cheeses, honey, ice-cream, meat, preserves, chutneys and ‘naughty but nice’ traditional sweets. Have a go at bell ringing in the mobile belfry; enjoy the War of the Roses re-enactment group and don’t forget to get your hands on a village map to help you track down the creative array of whacky and humorous scarecrows displayed around the entire village. Beningbrough Hall & Gardens - an awardwinning day out If you’re looking for a fabulous day out this summer, then Beningbrough Hall & gardens right on our doorstep has lots going on. Families editor Belinda Maunsell spent an afternoon there with her daughter. There’s always something going on at Beningbrough and our visit was no exception. My daughter started begging to go to the adventure playground as soon as we arrived but we saved it for later in the afternoon preferring first to spend some time soaking up some sunshine in the walled garden and doing a spot of tree climbing - her, not me. Alice in Wonderland was visiting on the day we were there and we found a few of her friends out on the lawn - in particular the Queen of Hearts who was playing croquet with a group of children and The Mad Hatter who was looking for the White Rabbit. India spent lots of time here running around, looking for fish, exploring the wood area and just generally letting off steam. If walking is your thing then you can pick up a leaflet which has a map to direct you around the parkland - or you can try geocaching. We then headed to the Victorian Laundry where we learned all about how clothes were washed in the olden days. India had a go with the wash tub and dolly - and even got to dress up! Inside the house we wandered the rooms and learned all about Beningbrough during the Second World War where it was used to billet British and Canadian air crews. Older children would find much to interest them here and I was able to explain some of what was exhibited to my five year old. The Beningbrough at War season runs until November 2nd and is well worth a visit. Next we headed upstairs in the house to the portrait gallery and had a go at creating some masterpieces of our own - by dressing up as Georgians and also by using an interactive computer to generate our portraits - great fun! This summer Postman Pat and other original artwork will be on display including Rupert
bear and Charlie Chalk. And if your children enjoy cutting, sticking, making and decorating then Artrageous workshops run regularly throughout the year. Each workshop is different, but all of them allow children to get creative and have a go at something new. Much to India’s excitement we finally visited the wilderness playground which will soon be wilder and more adventurous than ever before! “This summer we will be making some exciting changes to our popular play area,” says Beningbrough’s Joanne Parker. “This will include new equipment to explore and with den building being one of the most popular ’50 things to do before you’re 11 and 3/4’ there will be a new area of the playground specially designed for constructing the perfect secret den. Whether you want to sail the seven seas, gallop away on an adventure or defend the fort from invaders, there is plenty here to inspire an active imagination.” As we finished the day sitting outside the walled garden tea rooms with a well-earned slice of cake, coffee and juice it was easy to see why Beningbrough has just been awarded Visitor Attraction of the Year in the Visit York Awards. Forget the shushing stern librarian of your childhood; todays libraries are buzzing with activity. From story sessions, under 5s sessions and themed days in the school holidays - there’s more going on than ever. Families asked Amanda Ledson of North Yorkshire Libraries and Information Service to tell us about what’s on offer for families across the region from the Summer Reading Challenge to downloading ebooks.

Libraries - children’s services Family Matters Whatever your age, you can find something worthwhile in our libraries and what’s more it’s free to join! North Yorkshire’s libraries have a huge range of books, audio books, CDs and DVDs for children of all ages. We can also provide Bookstart resources for the under fives. Most of our libraries have an area for children to sit and relax, look at books and be read to. We also have regular story times and fun activities for children of all ages during the year, both in and out of school holidays. Recent themed days include “Aliens Love Underpants” at Selby and “Pirates” at Sherburn during May half term.
Under fives
It’s never too soon for your baby to join the library and start sharing books together. Every library has baby board books and picture books and there are no charges for lost or damaged children’s books. Many of our libraries also have free ‘storytime’ or ‘rhymetime’ sessions for under fives - see your local library for details. You can also request your Bookstart gifts from any library or the Supermobile. The Bookstart Bear Club is available at your local library for under fives when they become library members. They can collect paw prints as a reward for borrowing books, which go towards receiving a certificate.
Teenagers
There’s lots available for teenagers in North Yorkshire’s libraries. We have the latest DVDs, CDs and graphic novels as well as books and other resources to help with studies. Some libraries also have areas to sit and chat with friends or do research. All libraries have free access to computers and the internet.
Our ‘family matters’ collection is available to help give advice to families. It covers a wealth of topics, from coping with tantrums (be it toddler or teen) to healthy eating and party games.

By using your library card, or accessing through a local library, you gain free access to services that you otherwise would have to pay for. E-books & digital audiobooks E-books and digital audiobooks are now available from our new digital library. With hundreds of popular fiction and non-fiction titles to choose from, the new collection is guaranteed to have something for everyone. You can download best-selling novels, wellknown classics, self-improvement guides and much more. To download titles from the digital library all you need is your library card number and PIN. You can then browse both collections and follow the simple instructions to issue and download titles to your PC, Mac or other mobile device. Once downloaded, titles can be enjoyed immediately or transferred to a variety of devices, including the Apple iPod, Sony Reader, Kobo and many others. Some audio titles can also be burned to CD to listen to on-the-go. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period so there are no late fees!

Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the summer and research shows that taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge can help children keep up their reading skills during the long summer holiday. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps gets three quarters of a million children aged 4-11 into libraries to keep up their reading skills and confidence over the summer break. Children are encouraged to read six books from whatever genre they like - fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books just as long as they are borrowed from the library. Each year sees a different theme - this year’s it’s ‘Creepy House’. Each time your child finishes a book they’ll receive stickers and rewards - and there’s a certificate for everyone who finishes. It doesn’t matter what level your child is at either as the challenge is open to children of all reading abilities. Your child’s school will probably give you some information but if you want to know more visit www.creepy-house.co.uk where you’ll find out all about the challenge. You’ll also find a brilliant ‘book sorter’ which allows children to search for books that will suit their age and tastes. In the summer why is it many children spend more and more time focussed on screens when Yorkshire has so much to offer them outdoors? Kids Outdoors is a holiday camp for kids from 9 – 12 years old based in woodlands around Howsham Mill within 20 minutes of York and will offer a range of woodland/ nature inspired activities. It’s an opportunity for kids to relax and enjoy being in nature, exploring and creating with what they find. If they choose to spend the day climbing trees or making dens then they will have the opportunity. They can also take part in nature hikes and observation activities. Led by Forest School trained leaders they will learn to engage with the natural environment with all their senses. Children will also learn about foraging and storytelling using the tools of the forest. Because Howsham Mill is such a unique location, children will also have the opportunity to learn about its special history, and the amazing story of hydroelectric power at the Mill.
The camps run for two weeks this summer: Mon-Fri August 12 - 16 (and don’t miss the BabaYaga Shadow Puppets on the Sunday before camp starts.) BUSHBABIES WOODLAND ADVENTURES FOR CHILDREN AGED 2-11
You may have heard of Forest Schools, an educational movement which was adopted from Scandinavia where children in early years education spend most of their day playing outdoors - whatever the weather. Children who participate in these schemes have been shown to have a great sense of confidence, selfesteem and good social skills through their positive experience in the outdoors. Bushbabies Woodland Adventures provides educational programmes for parents and children and is run by Adam Dove who has over 10 years’ experience in outdoor education: “Participating in one of our sessions gives children a great opportunity to experience what it is like to be at a forest school,” says Adam, “so parents can see for themselves how beneficial it can be for the child’s development.” Bushbabies aims to bring Mother Nature into children’s lives in a fun and exciting way. “If you enjoy the outdoors then we have a programme for you,” says Adam. “As well as working with the children we can help parents learn some fun ideas, activities, and games to use in adventures of their own. You could help each other light fires from a spark, make fairy shelters, hunt for the leprechaun’s gold or track down the Gruffalo. “For the older groups we focus on surviving in the woods and as always with every session we have lots of fun. Suitable for any budding Bear Grylls, we will be putting our hands to shelter-building, tool using, fire lighting, tracking and many games and activities to stimulate the most active of imaginations.” Adam will be running a series of summer activity days this summer for children ages 2-6 and 7-11. Looking for a real adventure for your kids? For a summer to remember why not try Live for Today’s new adventure camps taking place at both their Harrogate and Hazelwood (York) sites. The non-residential course lasts for up to 5 days with something different to try each day. The programme will see the team’s favourite kids’ activities - including adventure climbing at Brimham Rocks on one of the days. “We’re really excited to be able to bring the adventure camps to youngsters this summer,” says Live for Today’s Dan Miller. “Parents can books between 1 and 5 days - whatever suits and there’s sure to be lots of excitement at both venues.” Live for Today offers exciting adventure experiences for children, adults and families. Based in Harrogate the main site offers activities such as Zorbing (Body and Aqua) , Off Road Buggy Racing, Rifle Shooting and Archery and at Hazelwood you can try your hand at Quad Biking, Laser Tag, Bushcraft and Foraging. Off site there’s loads more to have a go at such as Gorge Walking, Caving, Mountain Climbing and Biking to name but a few! Everything is suitable for beginners onwards so there’s no need to worry if you’ve not done it before. For a real bonding experience you can even ask the team to tailor make a family or group package for you!
Children’s Parties Live for Today also do fabulous children’s parties from both their Harrogate and Hazelwood sites. “Parties at Harrogate involve body Zorbing and Aqua Zorbing,” says Dan, “and at our Hazlewood site we do Archery and Bushcraft. “Zorbing is incredible fun,” says Dan. “With Aqua Zorbing three children are put in an inflatable Zorb - with water inside - and rolled down our 120 meter hillside. Needless to say the ride is exhilarating! Body Zorbing involves each child wearing their own Zorb and playing fun games such as football, tag and last person standing. The air-filled Zorbs allow the kids to bump into each other and do endless rolls safely.” There are sheltered areas at the Harrogate site for your own party food picnic and free tea and coffee for all spectators. In York at the Hazelwood Castle site parties start with a session of Bushcraft. “This includes building shelters, making fires and cooking hot chocolate - they then get to eat some of our bush tucker bugs,” says Dan. “After this they move on to the archery for a session of shooting at different targets and challenges. This all takes place in the woodlands around the castle - a great place for parents to relax over coffee and cake.” On top of these two activities there is the option of making the party an even longer experience by adding on Laser Tag, where children can use the laser interactive guns whilst hunting and defending throughout the deep woodlands. Both parties are available for ages 7+ and are priced at £20 per child. CBeebies favourites Alex Winters and Mr Bloom will be appearing on the Big Top stage at York Maze this September along with Harry Potter tribute characters. “Mr Bloom and I are so looking forward to coming to York Maze in September,” said Alex Wimters. ”This is going to be a great opportunity for us to get out and have some fun and laughs with children and parents in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside. We are sure that it will be a weekend to remember!” Tom Pearcy from York Maze said: “We are very excited to round off our summer maze season by hosting Little Fun Fest. Although the giant maize maze won’t be open during the festival weekend many of the other fantastic York Maze activities will, including our new indoor attraction Kernel Kernel’s House of Cornfusion. We will have a Big Top circus tent and show barn so the show can go on whatever the weather. There will be children’s fairground rides, food stalls, music and entertainment. When did that happen? One minute, I was the young hipster, darting withering looks at my parents - the next, I’m on the receiving end. Having children is, of course, an excellent way of reminding you of your own mortality. And when you’ve bred a sarcastic one, your cup runneth over.
Kathryn Parry-Brown of Arty Animals has made this fabulous Beach Hut cake - and you can too! Here are her instructions for a cake fit for a high summer tea party.
You will need:
White ready to roll out icing. A packet of ready-roll-out icing with red, blue, green and yellow A pack of writing icing Yellow icing, made from icing sugar to which you will need to add water and food colouring. A cake board
1. Cover a piece of 8 “ x 6 “ cardboard with foil. 2. Make your favourite cake in a tin at least 6” x 3” and 1” deep. 3. When your cake has cooled remove from the tin. 4. Draw and cut a template out of paper, place the template over your cake and cut carefully round it with a sharp knife. 5. Roll out your blue roll-out icing and cover the top two thirds of your board. This will be the sky. 6. Using the yellow icing you have made up, spread over the bottom third of your cake board blending it into the sky. This will be your sand. 7. Roll out the white roll-out icing so its big enough to cover your beach hut cake with enough overlap to tuck underneath. 8. When you have covered your cake, roll out your red icing and cut into stripes. 9. Brush your stripes slightly with a wet pastry brush and place them equal distance apart over your beach cake. 10. Then from the rest of your roll-out icing, made doors, windows, buckets, spades, star fish, shells, in fact any shape or object that makes you think about the sea side. 11. Have fun and enjoy your cake!

Yesterday alone, the little bundles of joy were generous enough to let me know about several mistakes I made - including not knowing how laps worked on my phone timer, how many planets are now in the solar system (how can this have changed?) and after a (what I considered amusing) riff on why ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ is a ridiculous expression, I got the full on withering look and the explanation ‘It’s just a song, Mum.’ Obviously, they normally do ‘nothing’ or ‘can’t remember’ at school, but they did recently admit to having played cricket. ‘Oh, nice!’ I said, cheerily, memories of playing this myself, aged 8, in Mr King’s class, ‘Was it non-stop cricket?’ Cue withering look: ‘No Mum. Or else we’d still be playing now.’ Nine-year-old leaves the room, cackling wildly at his own comedy genius. Another time, a few years ago, when they were quite small, one of them asked: ‘Not everyone has a brain, do they?’ ‘Yes darling, everyone has a brain.’ Long pause while child digests this information: ‘Even Grandad?’ To be fair, life has become like that old line, ‘I don’t need you to make me feel stupid - I can do that perfectly well on my own.’ We recently bought a piece of furniture on eBay (no, we didn’t ‘win’ it, we bought it. They just call it ‘win’ to make you feel more excited). Anyway, we trotted off to a rather nice house to pick it up. The people were lovely and we got chatting. The woman mentioned that she’d finally got permission from six neighbours to prune some of the
large trees at the bottom of her garden. Thinking he was funny, my boyfriend, drily replied: ‘I’d have just burned them down. Strange what can happen in a thunderstorm.’ Our hosts looked a bit uncomfortable but I decided the best course of action was to jump in with both feet and pick up the gag: ‘Oh yes, we could do it for you while you’re away. In fact, while I think of it, you need to be more careful about telling strangers you’re off on holiday. You told me you’re going away tomorrow before you’d even met me.’ As we sipped tea in their craftsman-built kitchen, sitting on their antique art deco chairs, I looked at my tattooed, skinhead boyfriend who’s clearly not from round here and thought ‘Oh dear’. And the deafening silence in the room suggested that they were thinking exactly the same. Every time it rains, Steve and I start pacing the room, praying that it’s a passing shower and that lightening isn’t going to strike some listed trees somewhere in Dringhouses. And I think I’m going to drive past later, just to make sure they haven’t been broken into. I may even camp in the garden, just to be on the safe side. I did slightly get my own back on the kids though. The smaller one came whining and wheedling round me and his Granny. ‘Graaaannnnyyyyyy, can we play a game?’ ‘Yes darling, what would you like to play?’ ‘Oh, what do you call that thing where you create a monster?’ Acid Mummy butts in: ‘I know the one, son - it’s called ‘childbirth’.’ Forty-three-year-old leaves the room cackling wildly at her own comedy genius.
