Cycle Path Scotland’s first cycle circuit has opened in Fife! Fife Cycle Park, the first cycle circuit in Scotland, opened in May at a special celebration with record breaking long-distance cyclist Mark Beaumont. Funded by Fife Council, sportscotland and the Scottish Government, the outdoor floodlit cycle facility offers a full range of cycling activities in a traffic free environment all year round. And best of all, it’s for all ages and abilities. The Cycle Park team are developing an inclusive programme to offer opportunities for everyone to have the chance to be physically active on a bike. Encouraging more Fifers to cycle and be active is at the heart of what’s on offer and the Park’s programme will develop over the coming months.

The ‘Robert Purvis Play Zone’, a dedicated skills loop, is already proving to be a real hit with youngsters. Tabletop - Scotland’s gaming convention Tabletop Scotland is a new, 2-day, family oriented tabletop game convention being held at the Dewars Centre in Perth on the 1st & 2nd of September. Over 20 exhibitors will showcase the world of tabletop games from strategy board and card games to family games, role-playing games and many more. Thanks to partnerships with HABA, Asmodee and other publishers, the event will help you and your family discover this hobby. No prior knowledge is required. The hobby is growing year on year and more people are looking for options on how to socialise with friends and family outside of online experiences. Created by four friends,
the goal is to give new gamers the opportunity to explore this amazing hobby and to act as a focal point for those already involved in the gaming community throughout Scotland.

Our Wildhood experience
What a weekend! The Davidsons are just back from the first ever Wildhood Festival, which we attended to review for our Families readers. We camped, to make the most of the experience, and had an amazing time. We arrived early on Friday evening, pitched the tent and joined other families in the ‘cooking circle’ to prepare dinner. The kids were happy climbing trees, playing with other children and generally exploring, and the sun was shining. The weekend was off to a promising start! The happy chatter of children was heard all across the campsite and more than one family I spoke to said they were using the festival as a ‘trial run’ for camping. A great idea, and what better first camping trip than alongside so many other like-minded families. And, it must be said, being surrounded by likeminded families was a real feature of the weekend, and a hugely positive experience. I can’t think of many other events where I have heard quite so much positive parent/ child interaction and seen adults and children engaging in activities together, or as equal participants alongside one another. Wildhood really is a festival for both children and adults alike. The list of activities
and experiences on offer is huge, but some of our family favourites were stone-carving, storytelling (in the most magical setting!), lino-printing, pond dipping, pony-cart riding and listening to the various bands and musicians across the weekend. In all of these activities, both adults and children were taking part, learning new skills, exploring nature and enjoying the shared time together. We happened upon some of our favourite sessions, by following some music or peeking inside a teepee (or tree!), and my children are young (4 and nearly 2) so they were mostly content with the huge array of opportunities for them on the castle lawn. The festival programme therefore still remains somewhat a mystery to me, as the site is arranged in such a way that many of the areas are hidden, waiting to be discovered and explored. So much of what went on I have no idea about, and I love that about Wildhood. It has the most brilliant programme but leaves it to families to discover and plan their own experience. We’ve got a lot to look forward to for next year, and we’ll be just as excited then. You don’t come away from Wildhood feeling like you’ve ‘done’ it. It leaves you wanting more, the kids (and grown-ups!) not wanting to go home, and with plenty of magical memories to last a lifetime.

#3 Get busy in the kitchen! Baking & cooking are great activities to do with kids. Young children love to ‘help’ and older children can start to take more ownership of their creations and experiment with different recipes. There is, of course, a world of recipe inspiration out there but if you are looking for something a little different, have a look at this tandem recipe book. ‘My Little Sous-Chef’ has been specifically designed for kids & parents to use together. #4 Get your vitamin ‘sea’! 15 beaches across Tayside and Fife have been presented with a Scottish Beach Award by environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful. The accolade, which recognises the high standards provided to users - from keeping the sand litter-free to providing excellent information and accessible amenities - celebrates some of the best managed beaches in the country. Fife has retained its title as the region in Scotland with the most awards, home to 14 award winning beaches. and Aberdour Silver Sands will be flying the flag for 25. Dundee’s only beach, Broughty Ferry, has flown the beach award flag since 2002. So why not beat the research that suggests nearly a quarter (24%) of British parents haven’t visited a beach in the last five years and take a trip to one (or several!) of our local treasures. While you’re visiting, whether it’s an award winning beach or not, remember to collect a bag full of rubbish to help keep our beaches beautiful and protect animals and sealife. Take a ‘grabber’ (as my kids call it) and it can actually be quite fun!

#5 Take a walk in Kirkcaldy! Kirkcaldy’s first ever Walking Festival will run from 14th – 22nd July, offering a range of fun and interesting walks over the course of nine days. The festival, coordinated by Greener Kirkcaldy, aims to get people out walking in their local community, bringing people together to appreciate different aspects of the town, such as its nature and history. It will feature a variety of walks, some of which are suitable for pushchairs, and some of which are tailored for children or families. With twelve
walks on offer, there is a wide choice available - from exploring rockpools to scavenger hunts to tots’ bingo. Festival Co-ordinator, Susan Jeynes, was inspired by other local festivals. “I’d been on some really interesting and enjoyable organised walks in Kinghorn, Burntisland and Aberdour, and thought it would be great to do something similar in Kirkcaldy,” she said. “The walks are being run by a number of local groups and organisations. The idea is that anyone can take part, no matter what your age

THINGS TO DO IN THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS #6 Say hello to the animals! Edinburgh Zoo is packed with a variety of fun and un-Zoo-usual things for you to do this summer. Home to over 1,000 rare and endangered animals, from the smallest dwarf chameleon to the beautiful Sumatran Tiger, there is so much to discover and explore. Why not visit some of the animal walkthroughs, bringing you closer than ever before to monkeys, lemurs, wallabies, and pelicans. Attend a range of talks from the expert keepers of Edinburgh Zoo, learning fun and interesting facts about the Zoo inhabitants, take part in animal handling sessions and watch on at the world famous penguin parade. Visit the UK’s only giant pandas, koalas and Sir Nils, the world’s only knighted penguin. Or why not see if you can spot the new arrivals? #7 Build a den!
For a change of scenery this Summer, take the family to the woods and build a den. Den building is not just great fun, it develops problem solving and creative skills as well as leadership. Get the kids involved in planning their den and finding the required materials. For a lean-to shelter, you’ll need plenty of long branches (fallen ones – don’t break them off!) for the roof support and the walls of your shelter. Find two suitable trees close together to give you the vertical ‘Y’ beams as shown in the diagram. Once you have built the walls, you can use leaves and ferns to cover the shelter and help keep you dry under there! Half the fun is building the den but once it is built the play opportunities are endless. Leave your den ‘up’ when you leave, for someone else to find and explore. #8 Get crafty! Kids love to be creative and for a good crafting session you needn’t worry about the product, just let them enjoy the process. Gather materials from around the house: raid recycling bins, cut up old clothes, and reuse scraps of wrapping paper and old greetings cards. As much fun as glue is, be sure to investigate different ways of joining - cable ties are great for larger models where glue doesn’t always hold! Pupils win £3000 for bereavement charity

S3 pupils at Morrison’s Academy participated for the first time in the Youth & Philanthropy Initiative, as part of the school’s Civics programme. They won their challenge to create a persuasive presentation on a local charity they believe is best placed to tackle a social issue they are passionate about. The YPI school final was an inspiring occasion, where winning teams from each class presented in front of a large audience and panel of high-profile judges in support of their chosen charities. The winning group, made up of five S3 girls, created a powerful and compelling case for Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland. News from Lauriston Lauriston @ Dunfermline are proud to announce we were one of 22 winning schools in the One Planet Picnic Pocket Garden Competition, through Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Eco Initiative. The children and staff have been busy over the past few months creating their garden which was showcased at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh from 1st-3rd June. The idea for the garden came from a topic of interest within the Pre-school room. The children designed a garden that explores what country food has originated from, using a mind map of their ideas. From this they researched countries around the world and learnt which produce originates in each place. The

Preparing Your Child for School If your child is starting school in August, you may be wondering how best to prepare them for this big new adventure! Firstly, don’t worry if they can’t read a word or write their own name. The ability to interact, communicate and exercise a degree of independence is actually far more important than reading or writing skills when a child starts school. In fact, research shows a link between strong personal, social and emotional skills in the early years and higher levels of attainment in the future. So if you want to strengthen your child’s skills in these areas, here are some tips. Independence The aim is for children to be responsible for themselves, their belongings and their actions at school. Help your child learn to get dressed, put on their coats/ shoes, go to the toilet, tidy away toys and select their own activity resources. Communication and Language Research demonstrates that competent speakers develop into competent readers and writers; without competent spoken language, learning to read and write is more difficult. Language allows children to interact with the world. Being able to communicate their message effectively is satisfying and develops their esteem and self-confidence. Model good spoken language, with correct pronunciation of sounds, and encourage your child to speak in full sentences using an expanding vocabulary. Talk to your child about their experiences and feelings throughout the day and develop a positive ethos around the importance of communicating and expressing feelings, of any kind. This will have multiple benefits (including knowing how your child is really feeling and maintaining an open and trusting rapport), both now and in the future. Sharing and Interaction The more opportunities your child gets to interact and learn how to
share and take turns, the less of a shock it will be when he or she starts school! However, expect this to be an on-going process. Allow your child lots of opportunities to play with siblings and other children. If disagreements occur between children, talk to them about how to resolve issues, modelling language and behaviour which gives them strategies and words to prevent or resolve disagreements in the future. Respect for Behavioural Boundaries At school, behavioural expectations and boundaries are likely to include: ❖ Listening the first time they are asked to pay attention ❖ Keeping hands/feet to themselves ❖ Sharing and taking turns ❖ Looking after things ❖ Tidying away ❖ Being kind to others You can reinforce these expectations at home by teaching children to respect themselves, their actions and the feelings of others. Gross motor skills are developed when hopping, skipping, running, jumping, galloping, balancing, pedalling a bike, using a scooter, climbing, throwing, catching, and kicking a ball. Varying the speed and direction of movement activities also develops spatial awareness. Your child can have fun developing fine motor skills at home with every day activities such as using pegs and scissors, bead threading, button fastening, moulding play-dough, and painting.
Exploring and Investigating Often the most effective learning occurs when a child is left to his own devices, without nicely-prepared resources and prescriptive instructions about how to do something. Make a conscious effort to step back and allow your child the opportunity to use his initiative and develop his creative, imaginative and innovative skills through exploring, investigating and initiating his own learning. Children learn by exploring, trying out and adapting ideas for themselves and taking ownership. Present your child with a large cardboard box (and the opportunity to access other resources/toys). See what he or she does with it. In the latter stages of his or her ‘creation’ you may wish to step in to play too, but allow your child to initiate the direction of the play and conversation. All the above skills can be naturally weaved into your everyday lives. But measurement is only a guide. The most important part is checking the shoes when they are on the foot. In terms of length, there must be the correct growing room. In terms of width, there should be no pressure on the sides of the foot and they must be deep enough for each individual foot.
