‘Snack-tember’ Returns
Following its successful launch last year, “Snack-tember” returns this September to help UK parents swap sugary lunchbox items for nutritious alternatives. Spearheaded by the British Nutrition Foundation, the month-long campaign encourages children aged 5 to 16 to swap high-fat treats for healthy fruits, vegetables, and wholegrains.
After reaching nearly one million children during its 2025 debut, the initiative is expanding significantly this year with a goal to impact two million young people nationwide. The campaign focuses on three core pillars: exploring how snacks impact daily energy, trying new flavours, and making easy, budget-friendly options right at home.
Parents can download an updated, free home toolkit from the official British Nutrition Foundation website. This resource features expert-backed healthy snacking guides alongside quick, child-friendly recipes like pizza muffins, homemade popcorn and fruit oat bites to kickstart a healthier school term.

DIY Lawyer

I don’t need a lawyer - I can do it myself. I used to believe this. I was wrong.
In my previous life as a teacher of more than 18 years, I genuinely believed this. How hard could it be? I always had a keen interest in law which drove me to change career and become a solicitor, but many people do believe they can do it themselves.
Get a Will and Power of Attorney. Seriously this is so important, but get it done properly.
Do you know what happens when you pass away without a Will or if or if you need help to do things and don’t have a Power of Attorney in place? In my past life, this did not bother me, but it does now.
Working in private client has opened my eyes, to say the least. Preventable situations arising from not having things properly in place are far more common than people realise. That, combined with an aging population, has contributed to me landing a job – so thank you, I guess!
Wills
If there is no Will, the law determines how your estate is divided through the laws of intestacy. This can cause all sorts of issues; cohabitees not receiving anything, a separated spouse receiving everything, a relative with addiction issues receiving large amounts of money, a disabled child inheriting and losing their means tested benefits. The list goes on.
Poorly drafted Wills are often not fit for purpose; appointing one executor who predeceases, appointing one beneficiary who predeceases, leaving a legacy to a disabled child causing them to lose their means tested benefits, adding a liferent trust when there is a survivorship destination in the Title Deeds. Again, the list goes on.
There are many companies encouraging people to have their Will drawn up by them. There are adverts about how cheap it is to do this and people presume this is being drafted by a solicitor. This is usually not the case and partly why mistakes are made. There are even kits you can purchase to write the Will yourself. It may be cheaper now, but you or your family will pay for it later.
Power of Attorney
Get one. Before I knew better, like most other people, I presumed my husband would be able to make decisions on my behalf if I lost capacity. Nope. He would have to get a guardianship order. This involves applying to the Sheriff Court to be appointed as guardian and is a lengthy, time-consuming process which needs repeated every few years and involves having to account to the Office of the Public Guardian annually.
We are seeing an increasing number of people requiring guardianships due to not having Power of Attorney in place. I know as this is the area I am most heavily involved in.
Executries
In my previous life, I had no idea how much is involved in the administration of an executry. Let me tell you, it is a lot!
Not only that, but it is also complicated. Locating assets, dealing with financial institutions, applying for Confirmation, completing inheritance tax returns, calculating liabilities, settling debts, dealing with legal rights, preparing executry accounts - it is a complex and detailed process.
Applying for Confirmation alone can be challenging. Even experienced solicitors have applications returned by the court for amendment. We regularly see executors attempt this themselves, only
to come to us after multiple rejections. We also have some complex executries diverted to us as some firms do not have the expertise to deal with them.
I was initially surprised by the cost involved in executry administration. I am not anymore. The level of work required, and the expertise involved, is significant.
I understand the mindset of ‘I can do this myself and save money’. Perhaps you can. But it might take three years instead of one and involve repeated court rejections, incorrect forms, missed assets, or additional applications just to move things forward.
Most of this can be avoided. It’s not that people are careless. It’s that they underestimate the consequences. I did too.
So yes, you might be able to ‘do it yourself’. But the better question is: should you?

School’s back – it’s time for Rugbytots! Our new term runs from August to October at venues across Edinburgh, and we’d love to welcome you along.
Rugbytots has been running classes across Scotland since 2008. We are a fun, energetic play programme for boys and girls aged 2–7 years, helping children build confidence, develop key physical and social skills and enjoy being active in a friendly, supportive environment. Studio 48
Studio 48 in Edinburgh offers engaging Children’s Art Classes for ages 6 and up!
Led by passionate and qualified instructors, our supportive environment fosters creativity across various mediums, including painting, sculpture, mixed media and our exciting new digital art classes. These sessions introduce kids to various art techniques and mediums, helping them find new ways to express themselves.
